Having internal body vibrations/buzzing.

Posted , 170 users are following.

I've been experiencing these body vibrations/buzzing for about 2 months now. It started out mostly at night waking me up between 1am to 4am..if I try to sleep through it it gets worse and even into my head. I've had several really bad mornings where its been so bad I get out of bed in a panic wondering what is wrong...of course this has lead to very little sleep the last couple months. Lately it goes on all day too. At night I can "calm" it with a glass of wine but only to wake up vibrating again. I've been taking anxiety meds and they have no effect. Tried muscle relaxers and they have no effect. I've changed my diet and taking vitamins with no effect. I'm 50 years old and pre pausel as I've had on full period I'm 7 months. Im so tired of dealing with this. Anyone else having this same thing? If so what have they done about it?.I have a doctors app. in two days.

I started these vibrations in my sleep after taking serzone and celebrex in my late twenties.  I don't get them often anymore, but always figured it came from those medications.  Have you been on any meds since they started?  They could not have been a menopause symptom in my late twenties.

I was on three different anxiety medications over a year ago. I didn't start taking buspirone again untill these "vibrations" started a couple months ago.

Hi kay, I'm glad you posted this. I have them too since a few years, I'm 48. They are awful, it makes me feel unstable and weak. From reading the other answers at least now I know it's probably hormones. I also have Lyme disease so I never know what is coming from where, many symptoms are quite similar to (peri)menopause.

I'm going to call my GP today and ask for an appointment to discuss HRT, I'm totally done with feeling sickly all the time and not being able to function as a normal human being. I will have to work till I'm 70 so I need a solution to get going again otherwise I'll have to spend the rest of my life in poverty due to these @#!! hormones.

Please let us know how things went for you at your GP. Perhaps we can share our experiences with this specific complaint and help each other.

As expected I went to my Dr. and told her my symptons which have continued every night since my last post. She told me she has never heard of such a thing. She says it could be my nerves in a "fight or flight" mode due to anxiety. ( I'm already taking anxiety meds...Buspirone. She wasn't concerned about hormones and has never heard of body vibrations during menapause. She took blood and is testing my thyroid. I've started taking vitamin B-12, multivitamins, Magnesium last week with no effect yet. I do have an oppointment the end of this month with a doctor that deals just with medicine management and specializes in anxiety. I just can't help but think these "vibrations" are connected to menaupase. I've dealt with anxiety and panic attacks my whole life and never have had these symptoms. If anyone has any ideas on relief from this please post.

I think your doctor needs to read up on forums more, there are plenty of reports on this by (pre)menopausal women, see above and other forums. These vibrations are totally different from the ones I get when I'm feeling nervous. They feel really deep inside, especially in my pelvis and upper legs. I haven't been nervous for quite a while (I'm not the nervous or anxious type really) but have these vibrations 24/7.

I think it's peculiar your doctor isn't concerned about hormones considering your age. It should be the first thing to consider for a doctor who is treating 'vague' complaints.

If I were in your shoes I would ask for your hormones to be checked or switch doctors.

I was planning to see my dr. this week but felt too miserable to go. Will try again next week though, and ask for HRT.

Yes the vibrations are deep inside. Not on my outer skin. it doesn't hurt but is so annoying it makes it hard to sleep.

Hi Kay, I get exactly the same vibrations and also an added pulsing when it is bad. It's so awful. I went to a dr today and she is 53 on HRT and said ALL these symptoms we are experiencing are from hormones. She had them and couldn't stand it so went on HRT since she was 48.

    • Posted

That's interesting! Did she get rid of all the symptoms? And do you by any chance know which HRT she is on exactly?

    • Posted

Yes she got rid of the symptoms and is back in the land of the living. And she said she would stay on it for a while still. She also said I needed extra salt as I suffer low blood pressure at times, she gave me a prescription for salt tablets or said just increase salt intake ( Himalayan salt) even put in it water to drink. I don't know which HRT exactly but it was a patch.

    • Posted

Thanks lisa, that sounds really promising! I want to try the stuff as soon as possible.

I also use extra salt, it really helps with the fatigue and low blood pressure. I don't drink it but just put some extra on my food. Sometimes on hot days like today I make stock and put some extra salt in it, it gives me a proper boost.

I  was planning to use patches also, they don't cause migraines like the pills do in migraineurs (like me).

By the way, I asked my mother today if she ever felt vibrations at the beginning of menopause and just before that, and she did, she described them as a constant electric current flowing through her body, just like you did!
    • Posted

She said they waxed and waned through the day for about 10 years and (you're not going to like this) still has them once in a while. She's 85 by now...

I asked if she really suffered from the vibrations full time for 10 years, and she replied by saying it at least felt like 10 years.

She got a prescription for hormones but was taken off of them by another doctor who told her they were not safe, which was true at that time. HRT is much more advanced nowadays, and relatively safe.

The pills did help though, and after quitting them she just endured her complaints. Which I am not planning to do myself, I want to get rid of this (and the insomnia, palpitations, dizziness etc.) a.s.a.p. I don't really care how. I've always refused medications for all kinds of complaints, but this one has made me surrender.

Yes I get this too. It's awful like I am somehow plugged into the electricity circuit. And I get vibration like pulsations too. I am so glad to read others have the same experience. I have never felt so aweful in my life. After 5 births, and some awful traumatic life experiences, this one is on the top of the list. I also suffer from C-PTSD so everything is accentuated and I can't wait till this transition is over for all of us.

Lisa..it is hard to explain what the vibrations feel like but your so right...like electric..pulsating sometimes...mine started at 2am..I drank a half a glass of wine and it calmed down so I tried to relax a little before work. I work 13 hour days watching 12 to 15 kids a day. My body was vibrating all morning so I finally gave into half a pill of ativan..I got it from a friend..not a doctor. I seemed to be better all day until I sat down after work and could feel the buzzing through my body...this could be a long night...I too think this is one of the most horrible things I've gone through and people around me don't understand.

As predicted I finally fell asleep at 1am after two glasses of wine, hotub soak and melatonin. I slept hard only to wake up at 5:00am to vibrations like I was laying on top of a washing machine on its fastest spin cycle. From a scale of 1-10 it was a ten....even in my face (I make up my own scale as I have nothing to compare it to...lol). 5 hours later its at a two.

Having the vibrations that bad I would be to panic to fuction might alone soak in a tub at 1:00AM. Do you ever feel nervousness on the inside as well? I feel the nervoness and have the panic anxiety and heart palps the worse.

Oh dear... I can relate 😔 I have only had 1-2 hours sleep and I want to scream and cry. I had awful surges hot and cold rushes that kept me awake which triggered anxiety too. My poor kids must be over me too. All my symptoms came on so suddenly a 6 weeks ago and I don't know how much more I can take sad

    • Edited

The vibrations are always the worse when I wake up from sleep although for the past couple of days they have stayed with me during the day too only mildly and yes the heart palps too. The vibrations are always in the inside. I can't see me shaking but I can feel it.

My symptoms came on suddenly too the first time I thought I had a pinched nerve in my neck as the vabrations where from head to toe. It was probably the worse one I ever had and then I jumped out of bed in full panic attack wondering what was wrong. From then on its happened every day. My body has been vibrating all day again.. I finally called my doctor to get my blood results and was gone for the day. She didn't sign off on the paperwork so another doctor couldn't give me the readings. The desk lady said you just had it done two days ago...why the hurry?..I broke down crying in frustration..I like you, don't know how much more I can take. Did I read in another post of yours that you had started HRT?

    • Posted

No I haven't started yet but I'm thinking I will. It's 10.45am I just took 1/4 Alepam ( the dr gave me for insomnia, I've never used in my life before) and I just had two hours sleep. Every bit counts. I will take a half tonight as I am terrible with no sleep and makes all the adrenaline related symptoms so much worse. Omg yes when will you get the results then? Do you have any medication at all from the dr? I've never been on anything ever before but this two hours reprieve from the symptoms is like gold. I totally feel where you are at. My whole life has spun into unknown territory and I feel totally scared by it all. Do you get any other symptoms , every day I get a new one so I never know what to expect. I started two years ago with irregular periods and cramping but nothing in the world like this. My life got very stressful in April with two jobs and I I full time, parenting solo, then my car broke down, and then of my kids got sick so we were on the buses everywhere including to my lectures and the WHAM I started extreme anxiety and insomnia first that scared me so much, triggered so many past things for me and it has been a scary ride ever since. I quit my jobs and my studies as I couldn't cope with anything ! Let me know how you go with your results.

Oh I'm 48 and my periods are 4 months apart now. 🌸

I can relate! I am the same way. I worry that all my craziness is pushing my kids, husband, ppl away. It's so scary and uncontrollable. I cry for no reason, I'm scared to death about nothing/everything. I have so much fear, anxiety, drepression and these vibrating/buzzing surges that I'm getting on top of it all. Nobody gets it. 😔Not even my dr. I feel every day like I'm losing my mind. I hope you feel better knowing you're not alone. This forum is a God send for me. Like out of the blue I'll start getting this panicky feeling, and wonder if I'm ok in my head. Do other people have these thought? Do other people feel this way? How do they get rid of these negative feelings? I question everything. 😕😔

Yes yes yes!!!! I hear everything you said and I had to check that I didn’t write this. I’m post menopausal. I am vibrating terribly. They found a lesion on my spine with an MRI. I have been treated terribly by non caring healthcare workers. Finally, now that they can SEE this lesion(unlike my internal tremors) I got a lot of action. Don’t quit trying to get answers and don’t assume it’s menopause.

How’s it going Lisa? I feel for you, I’m in the same boat. I have a lot of digestion issues now too. Losing weight (not in a good way, mind you). Feel depleted. Doctors just want to stop my acid production, but that’s not always the answer. I’m supposed to start bio-identical hormones in a couple weeks...hope that they help!

Hi Cynthia i definately understand when you say you re having digestion issues. I know the feelings. Be your own advocate when it comes to your body and your health. No one knows your body like you do. What tyoe of biodentical hormones are you getting? I was doing the progesterone but it only made my digestion issue worse. I hope you feel better soon.

When u get this way do you feel kinda out of it? The vibrating makes me feel like I’m seizing or something. Such a weird feeling!!! It makes me feel weak too.

I can relate.  Especially in nobody understanding.  Yes, I feel very anxious as these vibrations are unsettling and make you feel panicky.  I started in May.  Kind of thought it was due to extreme stress.

My Mom's 1st anniversary of her passing was in May and I was heading away with my husband to celebrate our 25th anniversary in June and leaving my daughter behind at a camp she attends ( shes disabled).  SO, when this started happening it caused panic.  I immediately went to the cardiologist, he did testing but assured me its not my heart.  I did diagnose that I was over medicated with my thyroid meds.  So, that was reduced by my GP and the rapid heartbeat and palpatations went away.

I made it through the vacation and felt like these vibrations had diminished a little.  I recall going to bed and saying...wow i'm not vibrating/shaking.  I started menopause in February, with skipping periods and had it again last month.  Who knows....  Anyway, my ANA came back positive.  I saw 2 Rheumotologists and they both said no Auto immune disorder.  I do have to go back in January for repeat and additional testing.  I am have nerve testing next week and am going to have my thyroid retested.  I also want an MRI and a brain scan.  I feel hopeless.  It doesn't make sense that so many people are experiencing these and the doctors never heard of it and they all look at me like, well its stress.  One said, why can't you accept that stress can manifest many symptoms and get some medication and stop looking for something else.  REALLLLLLLLLYYYYYY.

I have had almost the same symptoms as you have experienced -- starting about a year ago. No one has found out a cause. I've also seen physicians about this and tried the suggested diets (anti-inflammatory, Keto, vegan, gluten free, etc.). No diet changes helped with this -- although healthy diet does help overall. The heart palpitations were treated with propranolol/beta blocker (as needed)-- which I rarely need anymore (thank goodness!). The buzzing has improved but is still there. I do see a correlation to sleep. After menopause I have noticed that I wake up more frequently through the night and my insomnia is even worse than it used to be (and can really feel the vibration when I wake up in the middle of the night). With a good nights sleep, the vibration is almost unnoticeable. When I have insomnia, it's terrible! I remembered a similar feeling from when I was young and sleep deprived. My son, who loves researching, explained how the body increases the stress hormones, such as adrenaline, during sleep deprivation. (I guess in case of danger and you need to run from a lion). But, I'm thinking that the hormonal imbalance from menopause may be causing less quality sleep for many of us, and may be contributing to this vibration/tremor syndrome. Yes, stress will do it. But, thought I'd suggest the aspect of sleep as well (as a contributing factor).

Don’t let them stop you from trying to figuring it out. Most doctors treat symptoms. They PRACTICE medicine. They had told me to give up and I didn’t. One night I figured out that my jaw was hurting. And there we find another problem. TMJ causes more issues with the whole body than most doctors even know about. Dr. Centeno says it can effect the whole body and my TMJ doctor says it can make the top bone in your head (called the atlas), slide out of position. Everything from the spinal chord to all the nerves go through this bone. I noticed I have less vibration etc. when it gets put back in. Thus my next step is stem cell therapy with Dr. Centeno. We shall see if that helps.

In the meantime, check for TMJ and if you can find an ATLAS chiropractor in your area, have him check you out as well. They are connected, like everything else in the body.

If hormones are the source, I have found Dr. Natasha Turner’s book helpful. Called The Hormone diet book. But the key is finding source. I hope this book helps. Or maybe you have a hormone specialist in the area?

Well they think stress can cause Parkinson’s which can include shaking. It definitely makes my husbands symptoms worsen and he has Parkinson’s.  An argument with my son or some difficult job he isn’t keen on doing can make him sick like he has the flu and put him in bed for a day exhausted.  I would not be surprised if stress can cause the buzzing too as it is similar to the shaking. I think essential tremor can be caused by stress.  It doesn’t mean it isn’t real though.

Thanks for your response. Sorry you are going through what seems like many of us.  I saw my GP yesterday to get a prescription for my blood work to have my Thyroid checked as we changed dosage of meds.  I have been feeling in a fog lately and dizzy especially when laying down and turning over.  I started taking magnesium and started taking my iron again.  I am hoping that they may feel less tired.

However, I told him that my body was still vibrating etc.  He told me that he feels that it is from sleep deprivation and taking my meds too long.  He said they are addictive....I take less then the prescribed amount, but yes I do take them everyday as prescribed.  Go figure.  Sooooo, he said I need to see a psychiatrist and not to sit there and talk about issues but to talk about why i'm not sleeping and he is able to medicate for those issues.  I hate that they want to just give you a pill.  Here's hoping for a miracle I guess.

Thank you, I'm a fighter and i know how to advocate for sure.  I do see a chiropractor and he is trying

to be helpful.  I also receive acupuncture and that hasn't proven to be helpful in this, but I can't say honestly that hes treating me for this, its generally whatever is bothering me...headache, neck etc.

      Thanks for the feedback !!

I am really starting to think it may be wifi, or other electrical radiation. I went to a friends house the other day and didn’t notice that I was sitting about a meter away from their wifi device.  After a while that side of my face started buzzing and I felt very strange. I looked to see what it was and saw the device. I’m pretty sure that is what was making my face buzz that time.

I have been getting hyperacusis in the right ear along with clogged ears, dizziness, jaw pain and neck pain on the right side ever since having my hysterectomy and ovaries removed three months ago. The vibration in my head is the worse and my ear will be line even a fork dropping sounds like it could shatter my eardrum . My youngest is four so its always loud. Ive been to my Gp, ENT, Chiropractor, Physical Therapist, even a Neurologist and all have said its hormones except for my ent who suggested Menieres Disease but why would that start right after hysterectomy? Its depressing, anxiety-building and life altering. I am comforted by this group so I know Im not just imagining all this. Everyone I know told me hysterectomy was the best thing they did but fir me its a nightmare. I would take back my endometriosis and ovarian cysts over this any day

    • Posted

Angela I too have clicking in my jaw and a misaligned cervical spine. Ive seen the upper cervical chiropractor once and it seemed to help but I dont know. My neurologist says its hormones. It got worse after I got estrogen pellets

    • Posted

it sounds to me like an inner ear infection. i really don't think it has to do with your hysterectomy. Its possible the crystals in your ear are also misaligned that could have happened when manuvering you for the hysterectomy. Not positive about that though. Its also possible you have a cervical disc pressing on a nerve. i suggest an MRI of your head and neck.

You havent mentioned the same vibration as the others but i can tell you what i told most of them... Get a sleep study. Many neurological symptoms are born of sleep apnea. So if you snore or find yourself tired or having suffocation dreams get a sleep study asap. Best of luck!!

    • Posted

My ear ringing and vertigo/nausea started a few weeks after my hysterectomy. So many specialist visits. And the eyes sometimes darting side to side quickly. The doctors look at you like you are imagining it all. If all this happened to men, there would be so much research into it and treatments for it
