healing time after botox for anal fissure
Posted , 143 users are following.
Hi everyone!
So I went in for the botox treatment for my anal fissure around 3 weeks ago, after trying every cream for the past year or so to no avail.
Since the treatment my pain is still there and I was wondering if anyone else has had the same treatment and was successful and how long it took for the fissure to heal?
Any advice truly appreciated!!

Hi lhz31189, I had the Botox injections on May 18th and it took about a full 4/5 weeks before I really felt a difference in terms of pain. In fact, when I went for my follow up appointment with CRS 4 weeks after the the Botox, and before he examined me, he was trying to convince me to have the LIS surgery because of the pain. He examined me and said the Botox worked since my muscle was loose but the fissure itself had to heal and he wanted to cauterize it to promote healing(which I opted not to do). I just went for my follow up appointment this last Friday and my fissure is almost completely healed, it's just scar tissue now. I still have a bit if pain if I sit too long, almost like mild tailbone pain (I broke it years ago so I remember that pain very well). I am really careful with my diet and in particular the fibre and water intake. I drink 3 litres of water a day, use metamucil before breakfast and dinner, take a tablespoon of coconut oil and use 2 tbsps of flax and/or chia seeds mixed with berries and yoghurt every day. The key to healing after the muscle spasms are addressed through Botox or LIS is keeping the stools soft enough to pass without pushing or straining. Don't despair, the Botox can take a while to "kick in" and start working to stop the spasms and your fissure will heal. I understand your pain...it was honestly the worst pain I have ever experienced. I was literally bed bound for 7 weeks!
Take good care and I hope your fissure heals soon. Try not to stress as this makes it worse.

Hey xx thanks for taking the time to write this.
So I had fistula surgery with the botox, one week ago.
Very uncomfortable and can't go out as I can't walk.
Hurts to poo and for ages after.
I get the spasm pains and it's just so uncomfortable down there, like bruised and an awful feeling.
Did you have similar?
Your post has stopped me crying for a moment and given me a little hope xxx

dear poppy
hope you can keep it together.? i had to have another treatment for a fissure and piles 2 and 1/2 months ago. pain for the first 72 hours almost unbearable, didnt know what to do with myself. since then its gradually subsided. its a totally miserable isolating pain to go through.
its still uncomfortable which in my mind it shouldnt be this long after? the nhs here works at its own speed so i have to live with it. your situation will get better. you need to keep a movement as soft as poss and not stress. you can take paracetomol ,be carefull with ibuprofen as it blocks you up.
sending my best for your recovery.

Thanks John, I'm trying.
I'm just so disheartened. Started as what the Greek doctors thought was a 'perennial abscess' and had emergency (worst experience of my life) surgery in Corfu in august.
I then came home and attended multiple appointments here in UK, as I was still in agony, where they diagnosed my pain as 'angry piles' and said the 'abscess' had healed.
I finally got a specialist appointment and he said he thought I'd had a blood clot (which the Greeks said was an abscess) and that I had a tear in the muscle which I presume then turned out to be a fistula
. He said I didn't have piles and it was a skin tag which he would remove along with injecting botox, which happened last Thursday.
I felt really okay the first few days but the pain has increased (low to moderate with sharp pains). I rang the hospital and they said this is normal. I have my follow up Monday but I'm convinced the surgery hasnt worked. I haven't been able to speak to surgeon and understand I fearing the worst.
I'm going insane stuck inside and can't walk further than around the house. Just can't see an end to it u know? I also am worried I am going to lose my job as can't imagine going back with this level of discomfort.
It's very isolating so thank you for your kind words and hope you're okay x anything you would recommend?

Yes I have healed but it has taken a long time. The botox pain for me lasted for a couple of weeks. I don't wish it on anyone. I still have to watch my bowel movement as I do suffer from piles and have a low thryroid which can cause constipation, so... for me, it is an ongoing process. Wish you the best of luck with your healing. Hang in there, though it is extremely painful, it does get better. I really found putting a wet wipe soaked in witch hazel, helped ease the pain. you do get a wet spot but if I was not in pain, I dealt with it, seemed the lesser of two evils, so to speak.

hello poppy
hope you are coping? i wish i had a magic wand for you. diet helps. i have bloody awful bran with raisons and flax powder stuff in the morning. Some fruit during the day. I have a small orange during after tea. The swelling from the botox has lessened this last two weeks, however i still have discomfort during and after a bm. Im on the waiting list for another inspection. Feels like its never going away. Makes you nervous and afraid to go anywhere without the painkillers and creams ive still got.
sending a hug !

So my op was 26th September and my follow up a week after. I think I have another two weeks until my next appointment.
Basically, I had two operations. I had the fissure issue and I also had a skin tag which they removed.
I am still suffering with Spasms :horrendous injections of pain shooting up through my body. In general, I am in alot of pain from bm until after lunch - then it begins to reduce (due to no bm I am guessing!)
I genuinely feel that shooting pains aside, most of the pain is coming from the skin tag area.
I cannot sit down, drive anyway for longer than 15 minutes or walk further than 500m. I am still off work and it's very very difficult.
I cope with laxidos, fruit, pulses, cbd oil and salt baths. I also have a cream to 'prevent another fissure'.
It's bizarre because when I get to 8pm at night, the pain reduces down to around 15%, I have hope, go to bed and wake up with fresh hope
This is of course then shattered when I have my bm onwards and I am back to square one.
So yeah, I have no idea if fissure has healed as it's so painful to go to the toilet but at this point in this lengthy chapter, I cannot pin point the pain area and can't imagine when this will all be over.
At my last appointment, he stated a total recovery time of ten weeks and I suppose I am not even half way through so must not give up hope. Thank you for your kind words x

hello poppy
so sorry to hear you are still going through this. strange i also seem to feel relief in the evening. Half the problem is anxiety? you feel so tense and frightened to go to the toilet.
Im still waiting for another examination under anaesthetic.
i eat very healthily and doesnt seem to make any difference, botox should have diminshed by now but the area is still swollen and i feel bruised and uncomfortable most days.
will i ever be normal?!
sending a hug.

Totally agree with you John and thanks for the Hug.
I just bought some fig syrup, similar to lactulose maybe?
Sorry to hear you're in the same position. How long ago was the operation? Are you able to sit down for periods of time? I feel so isolated.
Sending positivity =)

hello again.
op was some 3 months ago.Im of the opinion something went wrong or theres something else going on? I think the fissure has healed because i dont get the really deadful pain i used to.,trying to be behave normally with my wife and kids is very hard when you feel so uncomfortable, youve got to have had the psin to understand it.Yes i can sit down most times ok, some days its more uncomfortable than others, like a nagging toothache. Are you in the uk? If you are then weve been through the same process. My gp cant do anything, its more botox or the lateral sphincterotomy which is a last resort?

Yeah, doesn't sound right does it. Yeah I am in the UK but my first problem happened in greece when I was on holiday.
Four weeks this Thursday since my surgery. After super painful bm this morning and still pain now, I have realised I must still have the fissure. There's no way it's part of the healing process, it can't be.

I literally feel like the broken glass thing is totally me so I think I still have the fissure, definitely sounds like it, don't u think?
Last time I went to the specialist, two weeks ago, he said the lateral sphincterotomy wasnt something they did anymore?
It's such an isolating pain, I totally agree. I just can't imagine ever being able to go back to work at this rate.

hi John. same boat wife kids work. ive had this a year. had botox didnt work has LS didnt work now just a week on from another botox. i think its all to do with a catch 22. the fissure hurts when you have a bm so muscle goes into spasm which in turn stops fisure from healing. last time around aftet about eight weeks i was almost out of the cycle. the dr said hecwanted me to start eating normaly and to get back into a normal way of life. i think that was a mistake. i am of the opinion that i now need to constantly take laxatives and not eat much else besides fruit smoothies and vegtable soup. the less i pur in the less comes out. there is no doubt the pain is always the muscle spasm. the fisure might sting and be sore but this problem is all about the muscle. i have a very strong muscle which means even with the botox it cramps up. ive almost lost my job and my wife over this. so many hours lost lying on my back with a hot water bottle under my bum. its a living hell.

so sorry to hear you are having a miserable time. its simply a horrible thing to go through. keep on the laxitives, fruit, water, anything to make it easier. the mental strain and isolation you feel is terrible. il admit to being in tears so often. sleepless nights if id gone to the loo in the evening,or lying in bed all day if id gone in the morning. house becomes a prison while life goes on without you. you simply dread visiting your loo. you dont know wether to sit, stand, lie, theres no escaping it.
medical response to this is really bad, i had to pay two private consultation fees to jump the queue. if i do get another examination appointment im not sure if i can handle going?
