healing time after botox for anal fissure

Posted , 143 users are following.

Hi everyone!

So I went in for the botox treatment for my anal fissure around 3 weeks ago, after trying every cream for the past year or so to no avail.

Since the treatment my pain is still there and I was wondering if anyone else has had the same treatment and was successful and how long it took for the fissure to heal?

Any advice truly appreciated!!

hi paul . you mention you have had 2 botox injections over 3 years ?

from my understanding the botox last for 3 months and then wears off ?

hence after your 3 month point did the pain go away ? did it get better for a few months after the injections wore off ?

I had my 1st botox in dec 2019 . my 3 month point comes to an end march 12th 2020 .

I have no idea how I will feel at this point .

I would say its currently 70 percent better than what I had before .

I always read people say pooping is like broken glass . however I have not had this issue . my issue is just at random points during the day and also I experience discomfort when I need to poop but dont go .

My relief was almost immediate following each injection, but through the following months I knew I hadnt healed due to the occasional bleeding that continued every once in a while.

Also count yourself lucky that you are free from the pain...it is much worse than just glass.... it has been quite excruciating. Ibuprofen prior to BMs can relieve some but not all of the pain. Life is different when you suffer with this... always trying something new to heal....

    Hi All,

ive had chronic anal fissure for over 20yrs. had good days and bad days. had surgery (LIS) 10yrs ago which didnt work. All the consultant said on follow up appointment was " youve got a tempermental arse", as he ushered me out of his clinic .

passed 12 months im unable to keep it manageable and has got worse everyday. no bleeding just very sore burning stinging pain from BM til i go to bed. i have tried GTN and diltiazem, which the latter worked for abit, then stopped. i too suffer with piles and after reading the threads im s**t scared of botox injection in the next few weeks, plus the camera up the bum.

however if i can help, what has helped me is regular hot baths snd hot water bottle. constantly sat on that, but be careful you dont burn your bum, but defo helps with pain more than any medication. also laxido. i take 3-4 sachets aday and stools are very soft snd very thin.. Also a natural help could be turmeric as it has strong anti inflammatory properties.

you name it, ive researched it. even mention of using egg yolk!!! suppose to be better thsn GTN. havent tried that yet though.

lidocaine gel injected into anus also helps and emla cream rubbed on anus can help.

also tried vicks vapor rub, which did help alittle but think anus area got too sensitive so stopped using all creams until it settles down.

Hope you can pick up some help from any of that.

Reports i have read on botox mentions mothing about it msking fissure pain worse.

Good luck all i know how each of you feel.x

its been 4 months now since i had botox done for 2 of my anal fissures and now it is coming back with pain again im not sure if the botox wore out or the hard stool i had a few days ago opened it back up. i was suppose to have a colonoscopy done to check on the healing and possibly rule out some things but covid came along and screwed that up so i cant get in there til july but if this pain gets any worse than like before then i got to call. my doc told me if it didnt work hed go straight to Lis surgery which i think im going to have to do eventually.

Some articles suggest 2nd botox injection (called as rescue therapy) would offer %100 healing. So think of another injection before going for LIS. The injection dose could be same as the first one, or a slightly higher dose.

I got my botox injection 4 days ago and this anal spasm is still there. wondering when this botox would take effect? I didn't feel pain or any other discomfort connected to injection. However it ment to cure spasm, but not helped so far really.

If this doesn't work I plan to have another botox injection before thinking LIS operation.

For those who are considering LIS it is widely excepted as a gold standart in anal fissure. Please seek for a doctor who conducts this operation with "pressure controlled". This means doctor cuts the muscle very carefully by testing the resting anal pressure several times during the operation, to ensure it is not cut more than needed. In this way, you're mostly avoided and minimised side effects of the operation (incontinence).

God bless all of us who suffer from this illness.

      Hi,

mine seemed to work quite quickly, although it still twinges now and again( had it 2 weeks ago). reading internet and says it shoyld start helping after 72hrs. however we are all individual so give it a good week or so.

i also still use GTN ointment ( seen a couple of conflicting reports about this. one says no difference but another shows significant pain relief in a shorter time)

stating the obvious, keep up with softening of stools ( keep doing what you did before, ie stool softener, diet, fluids).

Had, LIS 10 yrs ago and didnt work, and was in more pain for 2 weeks, however looking back think the surgeon wasnt very good as the follow up his parting words to me were " you got a tempermental arse...." as he ushered me out of his office and that was it...

      good luck with it all.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have Botox scheduled next week. I am still unsure if I should go for Botox or LIS. I am somewhat concerned about LIS. You mentioned Botox did not create any pain or discomfort for you. That's good to know. Most people here have had a bad experience with Botox and are in more pain and their bowel movement has also been impacted.

Botox is a simple operation, don't get afraid of it. The side effects are very low and if somehow happens, it would a temporary discomfort that won't last more than couple of weeks.

I read several articles. The route to follow should be ointments - > botox injection 1 -> botox injection 2 (two months following first injection if first doesn't work) - > LIS (preferably pressure controlled method).

My injection partially worked after 10 days. I now have reliefed days with no spazm and some other days with spazm.

If you believe GTN ointment does not work, go with calsium channel blocker ointments to support your botox. with this method you do not have headache.

My case is mild, but like everyone here, I experience the same amount of anxiety. To relieve myself of the pain, I have completely changed my lifestyle. In the duration of self-treatment, I had:

    1. Less red meat, since it's a bit difficult to digest.
    2. More fruits and veggies, papaya fruit has softened my stools big time
    3. Increased physical activity and fluid intake
    4. 3 times warm sits bath for twenty mins max daily to relieve pain and help healing
    5. GAME CHANGER -- changed my pooping position from sit to full SQUAT and this sped up pooping and reduced straining.

I know it's hard, but try to live your life as usual. Pain will always be there, keep in touch with your GP, have a support group. We'll all get well. God bless us all.
