Hello there

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

Just reading a bit further back - Anita -I was up and out pretty quick but you are only 4 days - stay in at least a couple more !!

JIlly, I guess it also depends which type of surgery too. I had the lapidus version and therefore need to elevate and ice for a long time. Actually on my way to the bathroom I turned the kettle on, did my thing and had to wait for the kettle to boil and now it is throbbing. Guess I cant hold it down long. Oh man this lifestyle is a hard change from what I am used to. I am used to being the caregiver, organized etc. So tonight when hubby gets home things have got to get organized. He called and asked how I was doing. I mentioned that he forgot to put out lunch for me and then he said I could just warm up a bowl of soup. I told him it was a little hard to take a bowl with my scooter, I am hoping he got it!! Tonight his is learning about organizing and caregiving, sheesh. MAybe I have too much time on my hands right now, lol. Ok, breathing and taking it one day at a time. Have lots of crackers beside me so I wont starve.

Anita -men just don't think. It's the carrying it, I know, I ended up sitting on my kitchen sometimes just to eat my soup. Don't forget it's getting better every day. That's why a requested a kettle by my bedside too, or even beside the couch.

Joan, I really like the kettle by the couch thing. Thats going to happen tonight. All I want from him is plastic containers with fruit and vegies in it. We have Turkey that I cooked last week and that will do me. Just grab and go to the couch. No hot stuff, too much time and moving to the couch takes too much effort too, in a scooter. Sorry to vent, but I am a little not happy right now with him. He says we can do this and he will help. Any ways tonight things are going into place. Tomorrow will be a better day.

I've posted in another of the threads on here but I thought I'd jump in if you guys don't mind- Had both feet operated 28th February so a little further on than many of you- So much of what you are experiencing I can sympathise with- the grab and go from the kitchen, the throbbing/swelling feeling when I stand - still have that for a minute till it evens out. But day by day I can do a little more or for a little longer.

I'm still elevating for most of the time- but get up for a hobble about every hour during the day for 5 minutes or so. I can manage up to about half an hour maybe once a day but boy do I pay for it in swelling. I've got splints I have to wear when I'm resting my feet- but when I am up walking I'm to try and walk as normally as possible - this is only since last Wednesday at just under 4 weeks and I have noticed a massive difference- although I am a little more swollen now, I have way more movement in my toes and less tightness in my feet as a whole - yesterday I managed to get shoes (big wide trainer type) on and a friend took me to the shop to buy my own bread and milk lol- exciting stuff eh?

Anita I feel your frustration, I'm on my own at home with 2 kids who try their best but sometimes it just doesn't compute lol- thank goodness for online supermarket deliveries and visits from friends smile

Welcome Beau! I had surgery on 2/26 so I'm right there with you. I am in amazement at how many are up and walking on their foot! Of course I have 3 other incisions on mine besides the bunion. I am also in the chair with foot elevated and iced most of the day. I'm getting a bit tired of it now. I have gained weight. Trying to think of something I could do to burn some calories as I am still non-weight bearing on the foot. I guess I could cut back on the junk food, but right now, that is my comfort...lol

Anita, Men do not get it for sure! Last night hubby told someone that he is doing all the cooking and cleaning. HaHaHa...cooking, yes I will say he is doing it bless his heart. But cleaning???? Who is that sitting on the knee walker with a vacuum in her hand and then a mop? Who is that butt bumping down the stairs, hobbling on crutches to the laundry room and then crawling back up the stairs. Why is there a layer of dust on everything in this house if he is cleaning...ha ha ha ha ha....

Morning or afternoon to some of my bunion friends!!

It was a bad night last night. Woke up in pain twice and had to take pain pills. Day 4 here. When does this stop. I know they first 3-5 days are the worst, is that true?

Had a chat with hubby last night and he didnt realize/think about the fact that i cant get around. He thought i was sick and still able to do stuff. He was busy all night getting things prepared for my lunches etc. I wrote him a list of things I needed beside me before he left. I think he was happy to go to work today, lol. This is going to be a test to our marriage for sure.

My living room really needs a good vacumm, but I just have to close my eyes for now and not see it. I managed to wash my hair in the kitchen sink last night and now to have a sponge bath this morning. Have a girl friend coming for a visit.

Jenny, I hear ya on the gaining weight thing. I feel like comfort food too but am trying very hard to stay away. Eating pretzels and taking the salt off first before eating. That takes a lot of time and WOW the amount of salt is incredible. Good thing I am not eating it. I love arrowroot cookies for my tummy but already ate a package and my g/f is bring over another for me. Trying to eat more fresh fruit and vegies and now that it is all in little baggies and prepared no excuses for me now.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

    Morning DAY 13.

Had to see the Dr yesterday. Developed blisters on my big toe and foot. To tight of a bandage. He popped them and the burning pain was uncomfortable. Went to visit a friend in rehab for her kneee so being up most of the day put a hurtin on me at night. My scar is nasty. About 7 inches. Anyone elses that big? Stiches come out Friday.

Joan - 10 K. You go girl. Where is it at? I'll be doing a comeback race myself.

Joan - Some men do think. My best thinking got me here!!!! lol

Jenny - I feel ya with the weight thing. I'm in the same boat and I'm going to use it as another challenge. Always kept my weight down and I'm a little discouraged at the present.

Anita - It will get getter better. Saint Annette is doing most of the housework. Usually it's a 50 - 50 thing.

REMEMBER DIFFICULTIES IN LIFE ARE MEANT TO MAKE US BETTER, NOT BITTER!!!

    Have a blessed day!!!

Afternoon everyone. I guess a lot depends on the type of surgery we have. Today is the first time I have been able to put a little weight on my foot, without the wedge heel show on. I am now 18 days post op and seem to be having more pain now than previously. Foot is still really swollen and I start physio on Friday - not looking forward to that.

    Has anyone else had physio?

Bob - wow that is some scar, mine is around 3 inch long and oh so tender!!

Think I'm very blessed with my hubby as he loves cooking, so no shortage of at supper time. As for the cleaning I just have to close my eyes, I've got strategic chairs placed around the house that seem to help i.e. one in front of the kitchen sink so at least I can do the dishes and clean the counter tops where necessary.

I can't wait till the day that I can walk comfortably and put on shoes again (still can't put any one due to the swelling) and get back into running.

Jan - I'm also from Derbyshire smile. Still no movement in my foot, but hoping physio will provide some excercises to help.

    Hi All,

I posted on another thread at the weekend and hopping in here now to say Hello. I had my Scarf Os and Hammertoe correction on March 26th. I cut back on the medication on Sunday but still have to take

    paracetamol

during the day and Tramadol at night, otherwise I would not sleep. I am resting with my leg raised most

of the day as once I get up my leg goes a purple colour and my foot throbs dreadfully.

Anita I envy you washing your hair. The most I am managing is a bed bath. My worry was weight gain

also as I am very fit normally but at the moment I have no appetite so not worrying about that at the

    moment.

Hi all from Toronto Canada! Love reading all your posts so thought I'd jump in.

Had Chevron osteotomy and hammer toe correction on left foot on March 26. The great toe has a screw in it and the 2nd toe is pinned with kwire which sticks out. Lucky for me the big pain lasted only 48 hours from the time I woke up in recovery (surprised me to feel it as thought they were freezing my foot!) and Percocet did the trick for that time. Advil is my go to since then as needed. I feel for those who are not as lucky and have to deal with greater degrees of pain for longer.

I live alone and my knee walker has made it possible for me to manage. It's given me independence beyond my expectations. I mention this to encourage anyone thinking of getting one to seriously consider how it might help them. I could not have done this independently without it.

Don't know you all individually yet but can't tell you how thrilled I am to have found this active thread!

Sending all best wishes for a comfortable day and the patience to take it as it comes ! LOL 😃

Bob - women's 10k Glasgow in May, 10,000 + entrants, what an event, atmosphere is fantastic, but I'll still go and cheer the girls on, then the great Scottish run in September.

Doing good today, been out for coffee in the afternoon with my daughter and going out for dinner tonight. Also had a quick trip round the supermarket, that was hard, can't carry things when using crutches.

Welcome Toronto though I know a couple are from Canada and The States as well as us Brits. Husband shut our Café today and took me all the way to Westward Ho! on the bus (he cant drive). It was a lovely trip out and only walked for about an hour which I can manage now. So in England Westward Ho! is the only place name with ! in the title. Any of you got a place name with an exclamation mark at the end?? Something for you all to ponder instead of our feet

    Regards
