Hello there

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

Be, at least your getting out, thats wonderful. I just look at my stairs in the house and out of the house and shake my head, not going to happen. Only way I am going down is on my ass but the I have to go up when I get back.Only way I am going down is for the stiches to come out and physio or the house is burning. Enjoy your day out. Yes, I am bored but life is going by slowly. I am still doing the icing thing every hour so that consumes a lot of my time and have because a clock watcher here too.

Anita- without reading back I don't know if you're in plaster at all- I had a sort of protective area of plaster just around the bunion part of each foot for the first 12 days- had both feet done. I was determined to sleep in my own bed not on the sofa so from the first night have tackled the stairs. It wasn't easy at first but soon got the knack- I did it standing up but I went up the stairs backwards so my heels planted firmly on each step and my theory was if I needed to sit I could without having to try and turn around. Coming down the stairs was fine- did it as normal but again firmly planting each heel carefully and getting both feet on a stair before moving to the next. After about 4 or 5 days I found I could manage more easily by putting my foot sideways along the stair. I am lucky though in that I have banisters both sides all the way up which helped a lot.

Hi beau, I have an air-cast and not allowed any weight bearing on the foot/let at all for 6 weeks. I only have railings/bannisters on one side of my stairs. Lucky once up stairs, the kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom are all on that floor. So really I dont have to go down except for leaving the house or doing laundry and hubby is doing that right now. My next outting is April 17th to get the stiches out. Thanks for trying to help me out. I appreciate it.

You are welcome - I can sympathise- I was just as frustrated at some things, by next week it will have changed to being something else but you will have progressed somehow- it really does get easier xx

Hi Rena. Hope you had a nice Anniversary. Did you do anything special. Our meal out was lovely and our daughter had arranged for a bottle of wine at the table, which made it special.

Be - I am 7 weeks and my hammertoe also swelled more when the pin was removed. All the toes on my foot are swollen. Ice is still helping, but as soon as you start moving around they swell again. Nice that you are going out with your daughter tomorrow. The fresh air is so good and gives you a boost, especially if you don't have to walk!

My foot feels as though all the toes underneath are sewn up together with a rough piece of string. Most uncomfortable. Can anyone relate to that????? I have 4 scars and they are looking quite good, but I suppose it's what's going on inside that is causing the problems.

Meant to be at the cafe today, but we managed to get cover at the 11th hour. Phew........ There I was all ready to go, feel dead on my feet. I really didn't sleep at all last night. I'm exhausted. Jill, are you still having to work today? Take it easy.

Bob - are the showers getting any quicker?? Bet you are looking forward to going out tomorrow.

Beau - I'm glad I only had one foot done. Must be more frustrating.

    Have a good day everyone.

I never thought to put ice on it, I thought wooooooop woooooop plaster off here I run. Will try the ice today .

The minx of a consultant when I went to see about operation said I needed to book 6 weeks off work. False information in my eyes looks like I will be off for 9 weeks . Bonus not missing work, missing moving about.

Sometimes I take stock of situation and say I will be running around soon ( I miss powerwalking/jogging in the park) Our situation is temporary what if I had an accident and was never able to walk again

Be - you are so right, at least we will get better, maybe slowly but we will get there, being in the supermarket in a wheelchair made me think, you can only see things at eye level and it was frustrating, but good to be out. I've booked a holiday to Spain beginning of May, my 6 week app is at end of April so hoping all goes well.

I miss going for walks in the park, jumping in my car if a want something. But enjoying the time off work, feeling lucky that I get full pay.

Morning all ! Thanks for the anniversary wishes gals...I meant it was my one week post op anniv..LOL. So sorry for the confusion.

Anita...am in a thick bandage and post op shoe so can heel walk and can have foot down for about 10-15 mins at a time before needing to elevate for at least an hour. I'm grateful its my left foot only and it felt so good getting out yesterday with the scooter in the car. It was great for the supermarket and actually picked up the few things I needed faster than if walking.....that thing can really go ! biggrin Then went to 2 more stores in the mall before I felt a little complaining in the foot and packed it up to go home. Had no bad after effects and spent evening elevated and icing for the most part. Am not sure, but think will have to be in the post op shoe with no pressure on front of foot for 6 weeks as well until the bones heel. Will verify with surgeon on April 7 when stitches come out.

Jan and Be....so glad you had a great time last night Jan and that you can take it easy today to recover. Thank you both for discussing some of the challenges after the six weeks when we can start to weight bear. It sure helps those of us not there yet be prepared psychologically and have realistic expectations.

Comfort and patience to all today ! 😊

    Morning to Everyone.

DAY 13 - Still lots of numbness and burning. Not alot of pain unless I'm not elevating. Stitches out tomorrow. Been getting out for a couple hours a day. Started driving about 3 days ago. Somewhat a pain getting scooter in the trunk then hopping back to the car. Today I have a few errands and tomorrow I have a full day ( funeral dinner ) so I anticipate alot of pain when it's all done.

People mean well, I'm getting tired of being asked, what happened, how ya doing. That's me tho. I'm getting frustrated or already there.

Jan - Showers are quicker. Getting it down.

Anita - Hope you are doing better.

Rena - Suggestion to stay off well takin. Sometimes my stubborness gets in my way.

Hope everyone is healing well. Again very blessed to be on this journey with others who understand what it is like. Very grateful for alllll the little things I am blessed with.

    Love and Respect to All!!!!!

Good morning all! Yesterday had physical therapy again. I weirdest thing happened. When the therapist started moving my toes, I got sweaty. Not just sweaty...but SWEATY! Dripping wet. Had to put towels under my legs as I kept sliding around on the table. Got very faint feeling. She brought me some cold water and a few peanut butter crackers and after about 15 minutes I was feeling better. What a wuz I was. There was no pain at all when she was pulling and tugging and bending the toes and foot, it just made me sick. Any ideas how to prevent this from happening again? I was so embarrassed. She also recommended that I sleep in the boot. What! I will ask the doc about that tomorrow as I have a 7am appointment.

Be...ice and elevation has been my savior through all this. I am at 5 weeks and still down most of the time with the foot elevated and ice.

Jan..I feel like someone has a string or rubberband around my toes and pulling it tighter and tighter. When it gets like this, I put something in between the big toe and second toe and it seems to relieve it. So, I have taken to wearing toe socks and it works like a charm!

Anita, I live in a three story house and I have to go up and down stairs so I go down on my butt, grab crutches at the bottom, doing what I need to do then go back up on my butt using my good foot and arms or I crawl back up. I put a stool at the top of the stairs so I have something to steady myself on when I get to the top landing. I sure don't want to tumble down backwards!!!!

Hope everyone has a good day!!

    Good morning everyone!!

Day 6 for me, woo hoo. Seems every other night I have a bad one. Last night was the bad one so looking forward to a good one tonight. Mother in law was supposed to come yesterday but she called and is coming today and bringing lunch. I need a hair wash at the sink this morning. I cant wait for a shower. Still havent had one and tomorrow will be a week. I have been washing with a facecloth but its not the same. Home care is supposed to call this week to schedule but no call yet. Hubby may just have to help if they dont come tomorrow. We need a shower cord put up first. Looks like the weather is getting better out my way. It was sunny all day yesterday. Hubby and I are getting things organized etc. He is glad that I made dinners ahead now so I am smiling about that. I can see how hard he is working as he is no stop moving at night. Maybe he will understand what all I do. My Mom is in the hospital just waiting to go to a Rehab place for a few weeks. Having to deal with the hospital and all the stupid stuff they do. I will never take her to that one. Always something they arent doing right. Gave her wrong meds 4 times already. Lucky I caught it twice. She has had a problem with her right shoulder and not being able to lift it. They think it is in her head, NOT. Its been going on for 3 weeks now. I have been talking to them everyday on the phone. They finnally took an xray yesterday. When I call and chat with the nurse they say she is eating good, ya with her left hand, grrrrrrrrrrr. Anyway dealing with that while sitting here is very hard but doing it. I so hope she gets out of there soon. They are just waiting for a bed to come available. I am her caregiver and my brother lives too far away to help.

JAn, what a lovely dinner with a special bottle of wine, how nice. I am sure you really enjoyed it. Glad some one was able to cover for you. It must be hard when you dont know and have to prepare yourself and you know it hurts too much to be on your feet that much.

Be, you are so right, this is a temporary situation for us. I feel grateful every day that this is not permanent. Will make me see things different once I am out and walking. Only put ice on ankle and behind knee area and always cover ice with a tea towel, It feels so good. I am still doing it every hour on the hour for 20 mins.

Rena, you must have had fun getting out. I can picture you now scooting around. You need a bell or horn on your scooter so people can get out of the way. Four more days and your stiches come out, thats awesome and I bet you can hardly wait for that day.

Bob, your sure getting out a lot lucky you. You need to elevate elevate elevate. Are you icing too. Take it easy on Friday and remember you first, "elevate, cause your worth it."

Jenny, you sound like me. I am sure I will be breaking out in a sweat too. Just thinking about the stitches coming out is making me sweat already. Its the brain preparing for pain. Glad it wasnt. I was told to sleep in my boot everynight and I do. Its really keeps me sleeping on my back and not moving around. The blankets dont touch my toes so I dont have pain. I have starting not wearing the boot during the day. Funny thing I noticed, my boot gets all wet under the felt lining from perspiration during the night so I have to let it air dry. The air cast has a plastic bag like thing between the boot and the felt and maybe this is why? I actually just noticed that yesterday. My toes get a little cold during the day, I learnt on a forum that someone puts a wool toque on there foot during the day. I forgot to ask hubby to get one from the closet so will be sure to today. When I put my blanket on it during the day it hurts the toes, strange.

Its Thursday, week almost done. Have a good day everyone and enjoy being pampered and remember to ELEVATE and ICE. Have an awesome day.

Anita - I'm going thru the nursing home thing myself. It's tough. They are underdstaffed and underpaid. That was big part of my surgery decision. Mom had two strokes and can't feed herself so I was feeding her everynight just to lower HER frustration level. They just plop food down and fed her when they free up. Also I would excersize her, now she doesn't get any do to her insurance getting her off. I have to surrender and have faith she will be ok. Gonna make it out to see her today. Good luck Anita. Your not alone.

Bob, your a wonderful son. My brother has turned his back and wants nothing to do with his Mother. Nothing she has done but be a loving mom to him. Anyways, do what your doing and know that she appreciates it lot. Mothers are a special gift and without them we would not be here. Hugs to you.

Love that " elevate 'cause you're worth it" Anita ! 😁 I made a toe sock by cutting partway down the sides of an ankle sock. Had to be super careful it stretched enough not to touch the kwire sticking out of my 2nd toe. Already grazed the bottom of the stove once with that protrusion and its not something I want to do again sad
