Hello there

Posted , 29 users are following.

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

Oh man, can't believe I just lost a whole post by mistake. evil  So here goes again.  I was wondering if all you frequent poster would consider putting more information in your User ID such as date and type of surgery and which foot or feet. I am finding it a real challenge to remember where you are all at and it makes it so much more meaningful to read and comment on your posts when knowing what stage you're at after what procedure.  What do you folks think about that idea? wink

One of the great features of this new forum format is that we can upload pics.  These are taken today at Day 21.  There is now a substantial improvement in swelling and bruising even since 3 days ago.  It seems the 2nd ex-hammertoe may be overcorrected a bit but I am thinking it may drift back somewhat after the pins are taken out in another 3 weeks.  The pin between my big toe and the 2nd can be bothersome when walking 'cause it is digging into the 2nd toe...but less so now than before as swelling of that 2nd toe goes down.  So here goes...hope this works !  I can't wait for the discomfort in the toes to decrease even further so I can give myself a bit of a pedicure!

      Morning everyone

I also just lost my post - this new site will take a bit of getting used to, but at least we've all got the time to test it out! I see you can tick the box at the bottom of this reply to receive notifications - let's see if the emails resume...

Wow Rena your foot is looking fabulous - what an improvement! And thanks Be and Gillian for the light at the end of the tunnel! Rena I think that's an excellent idea for people to put the date and details of their op, especially now while we're all learning to navigate this site again

Day 23 and I also feel like I've turned a corner - the pain in my foot is far less. Still battling with the dizziness but at least it keeps me lying down which can only be good for my foot's healing.

My Indian Head Massage yesterday was wonderful

I seem to have developed quite a sweet tooth - bad timing with all the Easter eggs and chocolate around.... oh well, will just have to not worry about my figure until I can actually do some meaningful exercise again - my calf muscle is visibly smaller already but guess there's not much I can do about that at the moment

Hope you all have a happy and reasonably pain free day!

    Day 29

Morning once again  ( That's a blessing in itself )

Yesterday was a good day. Got to get out a bit. Did some work at the church for an hour. Had a picnic lunch by the beach with Saint Annette. ( She's been a saint ) Had to drop by the chirpractor, back is killing me. Pretty good day. Seem to get bored around 6pm ish. been going to bed early getting plenty of rest. Sleeping more than ever. Still some throbbing and numbness. MAKE SURE WE SLOW THINGS DOWN SO WE DON'T FALL FOOLISHLY. ALMOST fell once or twice.

Eileen - I'm an excersise guy but I'm not at that point and haven't been thru this rodeo yet so I don't know any yet. Lot's of people hear do have some good ones.

Anintagirl - Hope you do well with those stitches out. Let us know how it went!!!!

Rena - Yes we are our worst enemy thru this process. Finding I'm more tired then usual. From a guy who works out often - '' IT'S EXHAUSTING "

be - Thanks for the encouragement. Especially on the day's when we feel we are never going to get better. Sometimes those feelings are legit and sometimes they aren't real. It's been a rollercoaster ride in that department for me.

Joan, Jenny & Carman. Just a shout out to you and hope you have a good day.

That's about it today. If you find yourself having a hard day, keep the FAITH and greet it with HOPE that we will recover.

    Have a blessed day!!!

      Day 35

Foot is still pretty swollen, a little sore but not too much, no painkillers needed, even at bedtime.  Still struggle a bit getting comfy at night, and awake half the night, though that might be because I don't get up until late..

Bob, I can sympathise with theback problem, by back been killing me too, but last 2 days I have been walking on my crutches, I also feel as if I have done a mega workout at the gym, leg muscles are achey.    So restint all day, well up to 3pm then off to my daughters house, she is making dinner tonight then taking me to my diet class for my first weigh in for 6 weeks.

Rena, your foot does look fabulous.

Bob, when I got a notification from you and clicked on it it took me in to Patient but said  post delted.

We will get used to this new look forum.

    Afternoon everyone.

seem to be loosing posts, so giving it one more try.

having a really good day today ( still hobbling y etc) but feeling a lot more positive. Been doing some work from home which I think has helped. Also starting to get feeling around the scar and thought I would post a PIC of may foot. So pleased with the results. Bio oil is definitely doing the job, and arnica.

Pleased to hear everyone is doing well and recovering.

Bob- sounds like you are having a really good time. Just don't overdue it.

      Hi, Joan

thank you, I'm well pleased with the results.

had it on the 13 March ( think that makes it day35?)

Carmen, I am day 35 too,  your foot is much nicer than mine but my bunion was huge and my feet really misshapen second toe in really bending towards the side so gives me a V shape, I think toe spacers might sort but waiting to see consultant first.  He doesn't really want to do any invasive surgery if it not necessary and hopes the toe will come back over itself

So true Joan.  Our outcomes with this surgery will be as different as can be given the different shaped feet and problems we had to begin with and the different surgeons and procedures performed.  I like to see the pictures to learn more about these problems and truly celebrate the amazing changes surgery today can achieve.  It also helps to calm me when I see stages of incision healing on others to know what I see on my own foot is perfectly normal and to look forward to the improvement I can expect going forward.  Helps me be more patient !  LOL

Rebs, carmen, Before pics  and day 30 I think.  Gosh my feet were bad, just to get rid of the V bit a little and I will be happy.

What amazing HUGE difference Joan!  And your scar is so well healed for 30 days !  I look forward to same hopefully happening to mine.  I am wondering whether once you weight bear more the other toes will slowly start to move over now that they are no longer being pushed over by the big toe.  I will be very interested to hear what your surgeon says about that.  And also whether he thinks something like "Correct Toes"  or other toe spacers would be worth a try.  What an excellent job it looks like....as you guys say in the UK...Well Done !  biggrin

Oh my, took me forever to find this thread again.  I'm not getting any emails at all from postings. How do I enable that again?

Rena and Carmen, your feet look fabulous!

Bob, hang in there and be careful! I fell twice in the first two weeks putting full force on the surgical foot.  Luckily I don't think I did any damage other than it HURT!  You don't want to do that.

Shout out to everyone else and hope you all have a wonderful painfree day!

Yesterday I had PT again and they put me on a recumbant bike which felt so good!  Also had me put my bare foot on the ground and put pressure on it. I was so scared but it was fine. Whew!

Morning all!  Darn it during the night stubbed pin on my 2nd toe pretty hard when trying to move the ortho wedge pillow around OUCH !!!  Now its more swollen and black and blue. Still looks flat though which is a good sign..So  back to strict elevation and icing for the day. neutral

Patricia....LOL.. My normal sweet tooth has grown to outstanding proportions...totally with you on that one !

Bob...glad to hear from you in particular because of your fitness that you find it all exhausting!...makes me feel better! What a group we are eh?

Joan...gotta agree with you and Bob about the back problem. Will be visiting my own chiro in a week or so.

Carmen...your foot is BEAUTIFUL!!  What procedure did you have?

Jenny....I'm not getting emails either. I'm having to log on to see notifications on top right. Glad you mentioned recumbent bike. That's the first thing I want to try when back at gym. Yikes, bare foot on the ground! How great for you! How many days po are you now?

Anita !....How did stitches removal go today? Thinking of you !

Shout out to all you other Recoverees and wishes for a comfortable day..😃

      Hi Rena,

      Thank you😀

Chevron Osteotomy (otherwise know as Capital or Austin),same as you, just not the hammertoe.

Ouch, hopefully the ice and elevation helped.

Carmen I had my foot operated on February 18th, and no way does it look as nice as yours.I have had to make my own splint out of a lolly pop stick as it is going back to original position. So well done.

Still it is much nicer than it was before. My op was  Scarf Osteomy +- Akin produre. Must be different than what you had as I have a scar on top of foot as well. Chevron Scarf .... whats the difference ?

Hmm....I just included a url about types of bunion surgery in a post and now the reply is waiting to be moderated.  Are we not allowed to mention websites?  Or perhaps is simply a security issue and the website mentioned needs to be checked out by the moderators....interesting.

Anyway, briefly, your procedure Be corrects more in the foot than Chevron does.  Also, surgeons do a tendon release of the big toe when required and this is also a reason for an incision on top of foot between big and 2nd toe.

Thanks Rena, I thought the consultant was being scalpel happyrolleyes

It also gives a  reason why I have tightness across the top and no movement in the toe next to the big toe, still after 2months recovery.

I have found through this long procedure that proffesionals. are out of touch with their patients. To them I am  a number an. They have explained the op but the recovery they never informed me it was a serious op and recovery would take between 3-4 months. Every time I have seen a consultant-doctor they have said to just to get on with it.

Only on this site have I learnt to ask for physio, to elivate and to use ice packs.

SO THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT IS COMMENTING.

      We are PROFFESIONALS in SUPPORT.cheesygrin

Be, you are so right, any information I found out about the op I found online. I actually cancelled my op first time round due to lack of info.  Only help I had was a Facebook friend living many miles away who had the op done 4 weeks before me, then I found this forum.  It's been so good and enlightening talking to everyone .

I thought this op is treated a bit like you are just going to the dentist.  " there you are, all done. , get on with it. "

I totally agree with you Be! All my surgeon told me was that I'd have to wear a cast and so wouldn't be able to drive for 6 weeks, and that was only after I asked him what the recovery time would be, wondering to myself if I'd be able to drive myself home from hospital afterwards - absolutely nothing about all the pain and having to be immobile! I think all the doctors and the nurses etc should have to go through an op like this before they qualify! A week after my op I thought to myself that I was being a hypochondriac and had to just get up, felt that bursting pain and thought it must be from lying down too much and I must just grin and bear it till it eased off. So as you can imagine I really suffered afterwards and only then thought to google it and found this wonderful site. Wish I could pay all of you some of what the Drs and hospital cost - would be far more vale for money!
