Hello there

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

Ok, OUCH!  The big bone under my big toe on the ball of my foot obviously didn't like all the activity yesterday.  Swollen and terribly sore today.  Will try to take it a little easier on it.  Happy Easter to you all!! Don't let a bunny hop across your foot..cheesygrin  Including a before pic of my right foot.  Will have to take one of it now that it is done.

hullo everyone, hope you're all having a lovely Easter weekend

I've had a lovely but busy weekend - Saturday we had a braai ( barbeque ) and my husband set up a pool recliner for me so I had a wonderful time, felt like the Queen of Sheba reclining and sipping my wine while everyone else did everything! Yesterday we celebrated my parents 60th Wedding Anniversary, how special, with lunch at a restaurant - I was a bit worried about being able to sit through it but a few glasses of champagne helped! Then this morning we went and collected a gorgeous little kitten and then I had to go shopping at the mall as it's my husband's birthday tomorrow and, after all he's been doing for me these last few weeks, I had to get him a little something. So my foot has now been iced and elevated and is still burning - often it feels like the cut is stuck to the inside of the cast and pulling away....

Whatever your beliefs, Easter or Eostre, it's a time of renewal of life so a good time to be healing - here's to the speedy renewal of our nerves, bones and tissues! And a picture of our new kitten having a ball playing with the strap of the velcro boot

      Lovely kitten!

Also noticed the sole of your velcro shoe is a good wedge shape. The one I was given just had a thin flat sole so when I was heel walking I had to physically tilt my foot back which may have caused my toe to be still off the floor at 5 weeks!

    Morning, WEEK 4 DAY 3

Pretty good day yesterday. Still plenty of throbbing, swelling and stiffness. Did about five hours up and around, couldn't wait to get home to kick off boot, ice and elevate. Seems like infection is gone. Still on another week of Antibiotics. Took another 20 steps in boot with crutches.

JOAN - Thanks for the diet encouragement. The older I get the harder to take off those lbs.

Jenny - That big bone under my big toe is way swollen also. So swollen my other toes doesn't reach the ground when I'm flat footed. ICE!!!

Patricia - Sounds like you have a great routine going. Keep icing.

ANITAGIRL - Hang in there kiddo!!!!

Lot's of errands to do today. Had an unusual awesome visit with my mom yesterday at the nursing home. Seems like when she's ok it's sooo much easier for me to do my recovery. Hope everyone has a nice Monday. Thanks again for all the support!!!!!!

    Morning Friends!!

Week 3 Day 3, Happy belated Easter to you all. Hope the bunny found his way to your house. Got my stitches out on Friday, and for some reason the rest of the weekend was not so good. I started soaking my foot in Epsom Salt once a day, to get off the polysporin and then reapply new stuff. Foot really likes the soak although not so keen about the hanging down. It sure turns blue FAST.  Seems to get cold a lot too. The warm water helps to warm it up. Hubby is off to work so I will try on my own to prepare the bath for a soak. It is healing nicely too.

Having a hard time getting comfy in bed at night? Seems the toe hanging from the ceiling likes to kick in? Takes me a while to find the right position.

Had a really hard time yesterday. Broke out crying, not sure why, expect for the fact that I have had it. So tired of all of this. I sure hope it will be worth it. Sometimes I feel that I should not have done this and just left well enough alone. When will this be over and I be back to normal. Getting so lazy. Husband just doesnt clean the house like I do. I have learnt to ingore stuff, but it is hard to do.

Girlfriend is coming over today to visit and make Paella for us. I will help with the chopping from the comfort of my couch, lol.

Jenny = your foot looks wonderful. You must be so proud and happy. Remember to rest. Is that something we all have to do for a while? How long is a while?

Patricia - sounds like a fun busy weekend for you. So nice to get out and enjoy family and friends. The weather was great for you too. It snowed here all day on Friday and then the Sun came out on Saturday, strange I know.  How fun, your new little addition to your family. What did you name your kitten.  At least the boot will be good for something, lol

Bob, hang in there brother. Glad you got out to see your Mom and had a good visit. It really does help when they are doing better. Mine isnt, so at the moment its hard on me and I am sure her too. Will have to deal with phone calls today with regards to all that.  Wish I could go in and see them but no choice. She did come over to visit us on Friday but that didnt go so good. She was supposed to come and join us for a Easter BBQ on Saturday but she wasnt well enough. My poor Mom, I just hope she gets better soon so she can enjoy a few more good years. She doesnt look her age at all. She is 81 but looks end of 60's. So awesome your walking a bit. I wonder if I can do that soon.

To the rest of you not on the boards yet, hope all is well. Today is another day, and it will be a good one. One step forward to getting 'us' back.

Oh Anita, I feel so bad for you.  I know that feeling as well.  I have said the same to my hubby but I know at some point this had to be done as I was having trouble walking without pain.  I too am really tired of it.

The pic of my right foot was before surgery...lol  I will get another one today of after surgery so you can see the difference.

Good morning Bob!  Sounds like you are progressing right along. Every step of this is so painful! I cannot get my toes down on the ground either usually. Depends on the swelling.  I am a bit concerned as the reddness is still there and it woke me several times last night throbbing.  I wonder if it is just because I have been on it so much lately and I no longer use the crutches.  I may call my physical therapist and see if she can take a quick peek at it as she knows that foot best.

Anita I so hear you when you say you've thought about whether you should just have left well enough alone! Feel exactly the same way often, especially as you couldn't even see that I had a bunion apart from the big toe drifting over to the 2nd toe. But I haven't heard any bunionectomy survivors saying that they regretted it 6 mths to a year down the line, so we just have to trust our decisions, and our Doctors! I also just stay out of the kitchen and bite my tongue about the mess! The kitten has been named Harry - he's still a little bit scared but starting to purr sleeping on my chest, too cute - will give me something to think about other than myself and my sorry foot.... Enjoy your paella!

Mornng all!  Such gorgeous weather here this Easter weekend.

I feel for you Anita.  Is there no way you can get out more?  Even if for an hour or two it is hugely helpful.  It's the only thing that keeps me sane.  But lucky you that you frequently have visitors. Too bad I'm not in Calgary. I'd come to get you for outings and then we could be the two Gimpy Girls on our scooters !  LOL  BTW...it took me almost a week after stitch removal to get back to prior comfort level....hang in there.... it WILL get better ! biggrin

Bob, Bob, Bob....what are we going to do with you ?????  5 hours up and about is much too much...I hurt for you thinking about how you are extending your healing time by doing all of this.  I should get my nephew to talk to you....LOL

Jenny....looking forward to seeing the post op picture!  I feel your pain girl....the pin sticking out between by big toe and ex-hammer toe is driving me nuts as it's digging into that 2nd toe (see pic in prior post).  Can't wait to speak to the surgeon tomorrow.  Maybe he can do something....like hopefully take the darn thing out and anchor the toe some other way !!! neutral

What an adorable kitten Patricia!  How I adore kittens....so much fun...this little one will surely keep you well distracted !

Going out or lunch today.....it will be a sit on the patio lunch in the glorious sun in 20 deg.....heaven.

Have a patient comfortable day all !

Rena, yes wished you lived closer, would be great to go out and scoot around with you. Havent found a scooter buddy yet.  I do know that when I went to the surgeons office on Friday that I was not the only one their without one.  Everyone thinks its neat and boy do I ever. I honestly cant imagine life without it right now.  Yes, would love to get out but for now only going out to Dr's and then I have to get into the back seat of the truck with my pillows. Next outting May 1st, back to the surgeons, not sure why but I guess he is taking another xray.

Enjoy your lunch out and the sunshine.

Hey folks some of your have mentioned toe spacers.  I got some made by a podiatrist as they're shaped specially to your foot.  My big toes still incline towards the others (op 28 feb) and I'm neurotic about this as I wanted them straight which they probably will never be. However when I wear the spacers and out weight on my feet they DO straighten somewhat.  Just thought I'd mention the spacers I. Case you want to try them, btter have them custom made than from amazon, ho I did get so e gel ones from there to start with and they were soft and easy to wear.  Keep resting. I can be on my feet indoors a longish part of the day now, outside not so easy still no proper fitting footwear., but my feet do still swell and I do still ice. Money other tip, my scars would ru. On the sheets/duvet so I've started to wear those very soft white cotton socks you can buy for putting on after smothering your feet in Cream etc. they protect perfectly without making my feet hot as socks do, and are also less constricting.  Happy foot recovery 👣👣

      Hi VJ

I have same problem and are neurotic about the big toe  sloping in again when I saw the consultant he told me to wear toe spacers to stop this happening.

I t has not stopped it.

I am also really angry that I have gone through ALL this pain and recouperation, and that  it may not have  worked. I had my op 19th Feb

Bunion op friends have put pictures of their beautiful feet on the site.

They are all straight......alas mine slopes in so you are not alone.

Ihave left a message for the podiatry clinic, so I can go back to them they were very good to me before I had op so I to can get proffesional toe spacers. Im also waiting for physio.

Hi Be yes it's so disappointing isn't it and I feel angry sometimes after all this

I'm seeing my podiatrist 29th and the physio 30th so will find out more then

my toes inclined since I was a small child so perhaps straightness isn't possible. My podiatrist has said don't worry too much at this stage as there is still swelling to go down but I cant see my feet looking like carmens beautiful one. They are better when I put my weight on them which is why I'm holding onto a thread of hope. I did have the tendon cut and X-rays show new bone forming but when I'm off my feet I don't like to look at them :-(  I have to say they're better than they were cold comfort perhaps.

Lets keep each other posted?! Doesn't look like you can private message people from this site since they changed the layout. 👣👣👣VJ

      Will do VJ

      Not only angry......

now started to cry alot because of toes sloping.

Even though I put weight on foot, toe is still sloping in.

They have told me that for some people it does not work. Maybe I am one of them.

Lets be positive.......still along way to go Be

Be and vj, seems I will have the Same problem.  6 weeks tomorrow for me, not seeing my consultant until Monday for x rays and further advice, didn't want to introduce toe spacers yet in case I do damage.  You will see my feet Are Really bad, took years to get to this state so

mighr take a while to train them back.  So hoping for this to improve over the coming months.

Apart from that that the no bunion is such a huge improvement.
