Hello there

Posted , 29 users are following.

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

Hey All!  5 WEEKS and 1 DAY (I always look for your post Bob so that I know where I am in the timeline as I'm exactly 1 week behind you...so thanks for being the timekeeper !)

Well, it's day 3 following the big pins pull and am still a little sore and swollen from it but steadily improving.  Am now out of the post op shoe altogether and into crocs but I'm starting to think that maybe the raised ridge just underneath the toe area in the croc is not so good for my foot at this time while it still is swollen on the ball of the foot and on top of the foot.  What did you all wear when first out of the post op shoe or boot?

Anita.....man that's scary about the fall.  So glad you're ok !  Once you start weight bearing and moving around you'll feel alot more normal and believe me the time will go more quickly.  Also, you may be able to negotiate you outside stairs and get out more!

Patricia....marvelous that you're so busy 'cause it makes you feel so normal, right? Rest well now for as many days as it takes to be comfortable again.

Bob....we had the pouring rain here on Tuesday....had to go to the dentist in that deluge with gale like winds but luckily drive from garage to garage.  Good luck tomorrow at the doctor.  Are you making a list of questions to ask him?

Jenny....can't tell you how excited I feel for you regarding the tennis shoes !  I sure do look forward to getting there myself. You're one month ahead of me so I always look to you to see what my next step will be ! (pun intendedbiggrin)

Have a good day all !!

    WEEK 6 DAY 2 ( RENA )

Morning. Nice sunshine today. Coming off a long day on my foot. Spent the afternoon with my mom at the nursing home. The tough part these days is I'm off the scooter walking everywhere on crutches, with boot, guarded weight. By nightime it's SWELLED CITY.  5 1/2 hrs out and about.

Joan - Vacation in Spain. AWESOME. Enjoy the sunshine. Love the beach, pool and sun myself. Careful!!!!

Mel - Thanks for all the great encouragement and support. That helps us all get thru another day. Your an asset here.

Rena - Not sure what questions to ask. Something I don't do much of. Asking questions. One of my defects. Usually just listen and go with what is in my gut. Hope you are doing better. Hang in there my friend.

Anitagirl - We will get there. I've had so many emontional down days. More better days so I'll take that. Thanks for all your help getting thru those hard days.

Jenny - Thanks for the shout. Feel like I may be turning a corner this morning.

    Carman - Hope your well.

Today I have my Dr. appointment. Tomorrow I was asked to coach our high school alumni game. See how that goes. Been coaching high school baseball for over 30 years. had to resign this year for my surgeries so I guess it's gods way of getting me back slowly.

    Have a great day everyone.smile

      Ay Bob

      Im Heading for week 11

Im going back to work next week. I will be light duties for 3 weeks and then they will revue it.

Last week I was on a high I was painting the house, gardening visiting people, shopping etc.

      I thought this is over.

      NOT !!!!!!

This week I am sooooooo down with it, going on and on.

I thought that now Im walking a bit it will be me back to normal.

Now, the soreness after I have walked in proper shoes is depressing me. Will it ever end????????

I have realised that I need to stretch the toe more. so it is really important to walk heel to toe around the house.

I watched on UTUBE  stretches that I was supposed to be doing all this time, and havent so the tightness and lack of movement in the big toe and 1 next to it is limiting.

So I am now doing my own physio as I still havent seen a physio to guide me through what I need to do

      God bless UTUBE cheesygrin

      Good luck with the baseball

Good Morning, Good Morning!!!!  humming a little tune this morning.  WEEK 5, woo hooo.  I cant beleive that its been that long.  Time does fly.

Went to my Dr.'s appointment yesterday and was told to get the boot on and grab the crutches and start tender walking. I am scared to death.  I will start on Saturday or Sunday??  I do have excercies to do and did them twice yesterday.  I could feel where the screw that went into both toes is.  Anyone else? It was a little tender last night. I did ice directly as thats what the Dr. said. Today I am going for excercie 4 times.  I do them while lieing on my bed. I started pillow pushes with the ball of my foot and it feels really good and itchy. I know sounds weird but it feels good. Also knees bent and pushing down on my bed feels great too.  I wasnt given those but via another facebook member gave it a try. No I need to to the others. This bending the big toe with my finger weirds me out. I know it doesnt hurt, like my brain thinks, but its just a weird thing to do. I know, get over it!!  Ok ok, I will try.  Its RAINING here right now and they are calling for flurries later today.

Joan, hope your having a wonderful well deserved vacation. Just think, you can show off your feet, woo hoo. Go easy but have FUN.

Mel, as Bob said, thanks for being here and helping us through. Its alway nice to see where we will be soon. Nice seeing you on FB too, now we know what you look like.

Rena, are you still using your scooter or you using the crutches. Maybe you need to make a list for Bob so he can ask is Doctor. MEN, sheesh they dont like to ask you know, they know it all (sorry Bob).

Jenny, those Fit Flops looks great. No delivery to Canada, oh well thats life I guess. I will start looking for stuff and dreaming here for a short while. Sure must be nice to be up and walking around.

Patricia, thanks for the web site. Nice stuff you have.  It will be a busy time for you with the event.

Carmen, where are you?? Missing you

Bob, I almost forgot you, how did that happen?? Hang in there, your doing great. Glad your able to spend more time with your Mom. You must be really happy to be able to coach this weekend.  Its always nice when life returns to normal, if not in baby steps. Dont forgot to elevate and ice. If you take care of your foot it will take care of you. We all need our feet to get us around. Your doing AWESOME. Look how far you have come. Let us know what the Dr. says today.

Its Friday and the weekend is here. Another week almost over.

Be patient with yourself and beleive in yourself. "Your worth it"

    WEEK 6 DAY 3

    Morning All!!!

Well Dr said ditch the crutches, and boot. Start walking. That was music to my ears. Said I can go back to the gym, swim and physical therapy 3 days a week. So I signed up yesterday with one of my ex players I coached along my coaching career. It goes full circle. Anyway, I was asked to coach todays high school baseball Alumnii game. Played 38 years ago so it will be fun to see the boys.

be - Keep moving forward. I understand your disappointment. It will pass. I expect to have alot more down days. Pain is my motivator. Stay on track and the old saying goes '' I don't care how blind the horse is, just keep loading up the wagon''.

Anitagirl - We both are no where near where we want to be. We will get there a '' DAY AT A TIME '' FEAR is our lack of FAITH. Get going with what the Dr. told you to do.

Thanks to everyone for the help and support. I'm getting back on the baseball field today doing something I love to do.

REMEMBER WE CAN"T FORGET WHERE WE COME FROM.

Have to keep helping others. Who are we helping today ?

Shout out to RENA , JENNY, JOAN, CARMEN, EILEEN

5 weeks 4 days today. Just had a nice drive out through Oribi Gorge and then for lunch at a nearby Game Park - just great to escape my bed for a while, and I even managed to eat my lunch sitting normally with my foot down! It is throbbing and burning now, can't believe it's nearly 6 weeks and it still feels like this, but also can't believe 6 weeks has gone by so fast. Only 9 more days till my cast off, can't wait to see what's going on underneath, and relieve the pressure from when it swells. It should've come off in 3 days time but with all the public holidays we've been having that's the earliest the Dr could give me an appointment. One would've thought they would've scheduled my follow up appts in when they booked the op, but sigh, what can one do....

Hope you're all doing ok out there today

    Morning!  WEEK 5 day 3

Glad to report that all extra discomfort from the pins removal is now gone and I feel much better than before they were out because they had been bothering me. Next step for me is to get out of the croc and into a sneaker. It's the bending of the foot to get into the that's the problem I'm concentrating on trying to walk heel to toe but the ball and top of foot sore so still doing the modified flat foot....but am done with the heel/side walking. I'm encouraged that I'm on to the next stage now. 😃

Anita....yoohoo!...welcome to the next stage of the bunionless walkathon! You're going to love the sense of freedom . I no longer use the knee scooter in the house. It now stays in the car for use when doing errands.

Bob....that's wonderful news!  You're on your way to normalcy. Have a ball coaching today. I'm sure it will feel amazing 😃

Shout out to all you less frequent posters....that must be a good sign that you are getting on with not so foot centred life! ....LOL...Look forward to your updating us when you can to keep that light at the end of the tunnel burning strongly for us .

And Joan....hope you are having a marvelous time!

Morning!!  WEEK 5 day 1 YES!!!

Woke up to the ground and front tree covered in wet heavy snow. The branches look like they are too heavy and might break? It will be snowing all day today. Sounds like a stay at home day. Hubby had to go in to work for a few hours so I am watching a teary movie, just what I need for today.

I will try really hard today to put on DAS BOOT and give it a few steps. Just scared as heck here. Not sure why? I know my ankle is weak and well the extra pounds I put on arent going to help. Keeping up with the excercises and they are coming along.  Getting a little easier each time.

Patricia, I  laughed so hard about your milk carton missing in action calf. This is how I am feeling too. "Agree with your imagination"

Bob, way to go on getting out in the real world, must feel awesome. Enjoy today. Yes, sometimes full circle is the way life goes.  Hang in there my friend, your doing great. Life is returning to normal for you one step at a time.

Rena, glad you feeling better today. That is always a good motivator. Keep up walking the walk and soon the heel toe walking will be normal. Is that the way we normally walk? Thanks for your encouragment.

To the rest of our BL friends, its another day forward.  "Let yourself daydream if only for today"

ENjoy your weekend with family and friends.

    WEEK 6 DAY 4

     Morning to my friends.

Coming off an awesome day at the baseball field. Got the chance to see alot of the boys I had coached and played with back in high school ''76''. Spent the rest of the afternoon on the couch. Foot swelled up and yelled at me to get some ice and watch Kentucky the Derby.

Today is a mom day at nursing home. Have to gear up mentally only because most of the time mom's cranky, angry until I find ways to make her smile and get out of her head.

Patricia - My legs and calves are also GONE!!! Have to build them back up so totally can relate. You are coming around the mountain so just hang on..

Anitagirl.- I can still feel the screws in my shoulder from years ago. It's a weird feeling so I know that feeling. Keep moving forward. Your almost at next phase.

Well going to start bending toe on my own today. Tomorrow have to pick up my $50.00 prescription cell for my therapy on Wednesday.

Shout out to RENA, JENNY,JOAN, MEL, BE, BEAU, CARMAN, EILEEN. I understand as we get better we get back to our rountine and time is limited.

    Stay well my friends.

Morning WEEK 5 Day 2, moving right along.

Its a cold snowy day here. Nothing much planned except trying out the boot and the crutches today. I will do it for a short while. A little everyday. It feels very strange but I guess that is the next phase in all of this. It would be easier if I had a coach come everyday and push me, but I dont. I sure hope that this screw feeling is all in my head. The scars are healing. My foot is getting more and more flexabile with the excercises I am doing. My goal is to be able to walk, with the crutches and boot, so I can spend some time with my Mom at the hospital on Mothers Day, next Sunday.

Bob, must have been a great day for you. Getting back into the REAL life again.   Stay positive and happy with your Mom. She will be so happy just to have you there. Change is hard when you get older. Your a wonderful son and you Mom loves you for all you do for her. Careful with the toe bend. Not too hard but just move it back and forth as much as it can go.  Its weird at first as there is no feeling but moves a little better all the time.

To the rest, have a wonderful Sunday and do something nice "just for you today".

Morning!  WEEK 5 Day 4.....Good day for me yesterday. Was up and down on my feet umpteen times over 4 hours doing paperwork and having to go to files, photocopier etc. all the time and elevating when seated. Even marnaged to run a quick errand to the supermarket and drugstore WITHOUT my scooter. In evening at friends for dinner. By end of day a little discomfort and some swelling but not bad at all. I definitely think this about 6 week mark  is a game changer! 😃

Anita....waiting to hear how you are doing with that boot. Heel walking is a good starti g point and you'll see how you feel. You can do this!!

Patricia....we are same vintage in this recovery...and can for sure feel for you in a cast all this time! What a day that will be when it comes off!

Bob...may you have alot more awesome days like you had yesterday!

    Have a wonderful Sunday all!

Morning everyone, week 5 day 6 - winter has arrived early here in South Africa and it's a good day to spend in bed, but I'm actually feeling full of energy today. I'm off to my reflexologist now - she says she can't do only one foot as it'll leave me unbalanced, but I'm hoping for some healing reiki and an Indian head massage - have really missed my monthly treatment

I had another lovely lunch out yesterday with good friends who are visiting from Zimbabwe - actually the friends who introduced my husband and I. A few good laughs and a couple of glasses of wine are always good for the soul, much better than pain killers! By pain killers I'm referring to paracetamol - I've noticed that most of you only call the strong stuff like codeine pain killers - what do you call Advil etc?

Bob, Anita and Rena - it sounds like you are all making good progress, keep it up, you're an inspiration to me. I've become soooo lazy! Hope everyone else out there is doing well too

bye for now, must get to my treatment
