Hello there

Posted , 29 users are following.

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

Hi All!  WEEK 7 DAY 1

Was on my feet for 5 hours straight yesterday cleaning the house , cooking and preparing for a friend coming to dinner.  I knew I was pushing it but by 7:30 pm with foot propped at the dinner table, an Advil popped at 7:00 p.m and a good glass of wine I was smiling cheesygrin All worked out just fine with lots of elevation during dinner and then in the evening watching  game 7 of the Eastern Conference hockey finals with my team winning !!  Yoo hooo!! (My team being the "Habs", i.e. the Montreal Canadians) I do forgive all  my British buddies for  not knowing or giving a hoot  about hockey...but just thought I'd share anyway. razz I've noticed over the last few days how my balance is improving in general and how I can now balance on the operated foot for a bit. So things are moseying along as they should.

Bob....man this losing of posts gets irritating!  So glad you persevered though. Where to do you feel the pain when heel to toe walking? Do you pronate?

Keep trucking all!  Down the line we'll look back at this seemingy lengthy journey and it will be but a dot on the map of our lives.

Busy, busy, busy!  My grandson arrived home from Afghanistan yesterday!! I am so thankful that he made it back in one piece!  It was a terribly stressful 8 months.  I can't wait to see him!  Just his parents, brothers and fiancee went down to greet him when he got in.

I have been walking a lot and doing the heel toe walking without a limp!  The bunion area is not bothering me as much as the incision across the bottom of my foot and the one up behind the ankle. Those are still stiff and sore.  The bunion area is still swollen under the big toe and second toe but I have really good range of motion.  I have my last PT session next week.  I see the doc next week and he said at that time he will start easing me back into my orthotics, THANK GOD! I need them so bad as when I stand up, my arch collapses completely and it gets quite uncomfortable.

Looks like everyone is doing pretty good.  Waving at all of my unbunion friends!!

Week 7 Day 3 for me, and Day 1 of my husband going back to work in North Africa, he'll be gone for at least 6 weeks so I've been thrown in the deep end of having to do everything again! My foot seems to get really sore every evening, and of course that is now the time I have to do homework with my 9 yr old daughter and get her supper ready, so I am going to have to be more organised and get things done a bit earlier as last night was quite difficult trying to be patient with her and being in pain. Then this morning I had to get up early and get her fed and off to school, first time I haven't been able to sleep in so that was a bit of a shock to the system! She's got 3 friends coming over tonight for a sleepover so no more rest for me, and I've got contractors here today replacing some ceiling boards so it's all go today! I've driven twice now and am slowly getting my confidence back - the feeling of freedom and independance again is wonderful! !

I got a new cell phone on Wednesday which is always a challenge finding ones way around it, but the good news is now I can post on this site from my phone. And it came with a Gear Fit thingy that goes on your arm and measures, amongst other things, how many steps you take which is a great tool for us bunion buddies to see how mobile we're getting. So far this morning, it's now 3 hours since I got up, I've already done 1787 steps and walked 1.08km just around the house! Not sure how accurate it is but will still show my progress

Well done to everyone out there for the progress you're making, our long slow journey is reaching it's end for some of us bunion babe's and Bob. And to the newbies, hang in there

    WEEK 8 DAY 2

Morning - Where are you ANITAGIRL???? Yesterday I woke up in tons of pain. Right hip in which was replaced was really hurting and so was my foot. Did do 50 minutes cardio and things started feeling better. Tough day at the nursing home. Walked out with tears in my eyes so eased the pain with a delicious pizza and yogurt hot fudge sundae..

Today it's the gym, Pt and I signed up for service work at the homeless shelter. Now retired, keep busy and I find joy helping others. I did go see my baseball team I resigned play yesterday so I will be looking for another tteam to coach when I recover.

RENA - As per your suggestion, I am going to try walking heel to toe slowly and properly today. Weight has been all on outside of foot. Use to watch the ''Habs'' all the time against my team Flyers back in 70's. Great teams back then.

    Work it today girl!!!!!exclaim

Patricia - Sounds like you have lot's on your plate. Make sure you find time for your rehab.

Kimmybabe - I felt the same way. Was afraid to damage it. My PT said it's fine and go for it. Also I may have picked up the towel and I'm not sure so going to implament a 5 second hold rule. Rule states we must hold it 5 seconds to qualify. lol.

Jenny- Glad to see you check back in. Prayers for you and grandson.

Remember, no matter how good or bad we feel today we must do something for our recovery Bunion babes!!!biggrin

    WEEK 7.....WEEK 7......WEEK 7  WOO HOO

Here I am, here I am.  All excited that its finally WEEK 7.  Sometimes it has taken forever and then it seems it went by fast. Thanks to this board and all of you too. Working on my walk. Getting a little better all the time. More secure feeling. This is a long weekend, with the Monday off. Not much planned as it is supposed to be cold 8C and RAINING.  Thats alright as everything will be getting greener. The leaves are really coming out the tree in our front yard.

My poor Mom is still working on getting better. Another treatment today.  They are finnally moving her to the Geriatrics unit in the hopsital and that will be better for her. I made a hair appointment for her for Saturday, they have a hairdresser on site, so that will help her feel a little better. I plan on spending some time with her this weekend.  I hope she gets better soon and she can enjoy life again. I do miss her lots around here.

Looking forward to doing a little shopping on an electric scooter that most stores her have available for people like me, ha ha.

Bob, bit HUGS to you bro.  So sorry about your Mom. Hang in there, you Mom loves you and she knows you do the best you can for her. WOW, that pizza and sundae sounds wonderful.  You need to treat yourself too. Go easy at the gym and pt today. This isnt a race with anyone else except you.  Look after that foot of yours and it will do lots for you. Thats so wonderful of you helping the homeless shelter. Your such a busy guy. Hang in there, things will get better. Thanks for always inspiring us and giving us the motivation to pick ourself up.  Your the BEST!!

Rena, way to go on the walking heel to toe. I cant wait to get there. I used to love wearing my orthothics, sure made my foot feel better. I am going to have to look for mine so I can have them handy when the time comes.

Patricia, sounds like a busy 6 weeks ahead of you.  Yes, your going to have to be organized for sure. Sounds like a busy weekend with the sleep over. New phones are fun and little overwhelming sometimes.  Try not to do too much too fast.  Easy on your poor little foot. A little more everyday, this isnt a race. Thats awesome that the phone tracks your steps.  That will give your something to work towards each day. Moving more and more. Remember to elevate and ice at night. It really helps our poor foot.

Jenny, how wonderful that your grandson is back. What a releif.  Lots of celebrating this weekend for your family. How wonderful and exciting that the bunion site is painfree now.  I guess the scar area will be a challenge for a while yet. So happy for you that your up and around more now.

Kim, slow down and stop to smeel the flowers. This isnt a race. Your foot needs to ease back into this. Sorry to here about the joint. Guess I better start moving mine more and use my finger if I need to. Your doing great!!

Joan and Spice Girl Mel, hope things are well with you both.

Have a great weekend to all. Thanks Bob for being our 'coach' through all of this. What a wonderful group we have here.

Keep up the good work and 'MOVE IT"

Hello everyone, love all the big newsy posts, everyone is sounding so much cheerier. Forced myself to drive today, probably could have done it sooner, but wasn't just ready. I drove to the gym, after giving myself a good talking too as

As I seem to be getting to lazy and enjoying sitting doing nothing. Bob, 2 minutes on the cross trainer and my legs were like jelly. Got an appointment with a personal fitness trainer to make an exercise program for me, hope it's one of the lovely dishy guys at the gym. Bring it on.

Bob you look after yourself, your mom needs you to be fit and well, I know you don't listen but cut down just a bit.

    Anita you doing great

By the way I had to buy men's trainers yesterday as no ladies ones were wide enough.

    Week 8 day2

Having a weekend away in Wales , nice and relaxing for me, but hard for my husband who'll be competing in the Slateman Triathalon tomorrow. That includes a swim round a very cold lake, cycling up mountains and a long run.

I'll be pottering around (practicing my walk) while he does it. We popped into Carnaerfon earlier this evening where I tried walking without a limp, but each step is sooo painful. When will it stop hurting??

Bob , sorry to hear you were so sad today. You're poor Mum will benefitting so much from your visits, you're a good son. Well done for volunteering at the homeless shelter too, much needed, and very fulfilling to be able to give something back to society.

I'm way behind you on the towel exercise, my big toe just won't bend much yet.

Patricia, quite a shock to the system suddenly having to do so much! I wish I'd appreciated the first few weeks more when I could rest a lot. Being back at work with the early mornings is really tiring. Hope you find some time for yourself to rest and recover.

Joan, how are you finding the driving? I find the pain in the ball of my foot really bad, so I'm avoiding it as much as possible.

Anita, thanks for the encouragement, I will take it slowly. Have fun shopping on the scooter!

Rena, thanks for the exercise sheet and advice. Well done for doing all that housework and cooking.

Jenny, lovely to have your grandson back.

Hope everyone else is well and happy.

Kim, I wasn't confident when driving, felt nervous but no pain, just kept hoping the traffic lights are going to change to green so I didn't need to stop, but was really only driving a short distance though many traffic lights.

I can't bend my big toe, wouldn't get a towel picked up, maybe will get better now I am doing exercises at the gym. Thought my foot would be sore today after so much action yesterday as I went a big walk in the evening, but it's ok, feeling a bit tingly and hot around the scar.

Sorry to here you have pain Kim, but hope your break away helps. Re work can you take some annual leave days, I was thinking that once I am back full time hours I will take one day a week off fora while.

Have a great weekend everyone. I'm off to my favourite restaurant tonight. Oh guess what, it's raining again here in Glasgow.

    WEEK 8 Day 3

    Morning Everyone.

Today is a beautiful Sunny day. Going to get my workout in, do a little service work for an hour and then spend the afternoon with Annette and ole man Frank. Ole man Frank is just a friend who we hang out with, he's 82 years old. We are going to take him to the boxing matches today and have some lunch.

Yesterday was a complete downpour and spent it working out, PT in which went well and stopped for a visit with my mom. Mom's really struggling these past two days. Ended my day at the homeless shelter. Very humbling and left with alot of gratitude.

Foot is still sore. making progress each day. Started walking heel to toe slowly with good form and it was painful. 11 DAYS UNTIL NEXT SURGERY!!!

Anitagirl - I get the mental anquish you feel with your mom in the hospital. Just know she is safe and being cared for. Work your side today which is getting that foot stronger so you can be there.

Joan - Hope you get hooked up with that stud trainer so he keeps you coming back. LOL Keep increasing your cardio time everyday. Stay CONSISTENT!!!!

Kimmygirl - Great that your supporting your husband. He must be a beast. I train my best friend who is a marathon runner. She won the woman's marathon 3 years. Those people are special athletes. Start bending that toe. It will start moving if you keep working it. Try to eliminate the limp for as many steps as you can.

     Where's Spice Girl Mel?

Remember, let's keep our sole ambition today to be the best person we can be, do as well as we can and most important '' DO NOT GIVE UP''

Have a great day Bunion Babes!!!!

    Week 7 Day 1,

Moving along. Walking a little more everyday. Today I am going out to visit Mom and then off shopping with my husband. Should be a full day and thats what I need. Really feeling housebound this week.  Didnt want any visitors this week, just needed a week for 'ME'. I am ready to get out in the real world again. I have been busy with a friend via SKYPE and she lives close by me. SMall world, I met her in my Doctors office a few weeks back and now we chat all day long. It really helps with the boredom. We are looking forward to going out for lunch once we both are up and about.  I cant drive as it is my right foot and she had the left foot done. I am coaching her to 'move it', seems she is afraid, like I was. The more you do, that better and easier it gets. Still crutch walking here. Hopeing to get better so maybe at the end of next week I can toss the crutches. Need a goal to work towards.

Bob, sounds like a nice day out with ole man Frank and Annette. I am sure he loves your company. Way to go o the heel toe walk, that scares me right now. I need to be more confident yet.  Enjoy your day today.

Joan, your doing awesome. I am already afraid of the driving part.  I never realized how much we use our toes when driving. I made a mental note of the way I drive just before surgery and was shocked. So great that your able to walk more and more. So, do tell, what was your favorite restaurant and what type of food do they have that you like.

Kim, your husband must really be an athlete. Very nice that you can support him and do a little more walking for yourself too.  Its always nice to get away. Baby steps girl. You will get there.

Spice Girl Mel, I know your on the boat having an awesome time with the wind in your hair and sun on your face showing off your feet in your sandals. Enjoy a drink or two, you deserve it.

CEO Ren, where are you girl. I know your on FB but we miss you here too.

Patricia, how are things going for you. Must be a busy weekend with a sleep over this weekend.

    Jenny, where are you?

Well its a long weekend here in Canada, meaning that Monday is a day off. Its Victoria Day weekend, after the Queen of England. Supposed to be a wet coolish weekend. It usually SNOWS every year so will see if it holds true this weekend.

MOVE IT, MOVE IT. Let 'JUST DO IT'. Think about how far we have all come. Smile at your loved ones and they will smile back at you. Have a HAPPY weekend.

    WEEK 7 DAY 2

Morning!!!  Went to visit Mom and took her outside for a little fresh air. Sat on a bench and the sun was out and shining on our faces. Then headed to Costco and Superstore for some groceries.  Used the stores scooters each time and it really helped. Husband loves to go shopping around 2.30 which I dont. Too many people, oh well. We then went out for Sushi before heading home. I think it was too much. I was so uncomfortable at the restaurant. Tried to put my foot up but it wasnt good. Couldnt wait to get home. I actually did a lot more walking and then walked up the stairs too.  Couldnt wait to hit the couch and ice. Going to take it easy today but still will do the walking. I need to push myself.

Looks like an overcast rainy weekend here. Nothing much planned. Hanging on the couch, this is life right now. Maybe will finally get some magazine reading time in.

Bob, sounds like a real nice day out for you. I agree, you need to take a day off. I will try to toss the crutches but it is hard to balance for me still.

Waving at all the Bunion Babes here.

One step at a time here. We are doing good!!

Hi Anita and Bob, very quiete now on this forum, but I still like thisone for big newsy posts, facebook not the same for that.

Anita, my favourite restaurant is Italian, I like pasta and cook it at home too, using best fresh ingredients and I find keeping it simple is usually the tastiest way.

Bob, cant wait for my gym session, should motivate me more having a programme to follow and thatI will beable to see improvement. every week.

Went shopping yesterday in our shopping centre (mall) I so wished I had got a mobility scooter out,I got so tired wallking from one end to the other, I thought I could do it, but apparently not.  Anyway, success as I bought some clothes and also ordered a new laptop, cant wait to get that tomorrow.

I got really fed up with myself  yesterday, was feeiling very down, couldnt believe it myself as I had nothing to feel down about, out for a nice meal, new laptop, new clothes, I just wanted to be normal again.  My foot was sore with all the walking about and stress driving.  Today isback to normal, feeling good, I suppose these moments just come and we have to work through it.  I took comfort in reading posts on here yesterday and felt the support.

Anita I do think we need to push ourselves a bit sometime, like I did yesterday, and today I feel much better and even more confident in driving.

Sounds like you had a lovely day with your mum, and Bob glad you had a nice day too, it makes all the difference.

    Happy healing

Week 7 Day 5 - I've had a lovely lazy Sunday today. Going back to my old job of Mum and Home Executive has been quite exhausting! My daughter's friends wanted to stay another night and I had to say no, I'm too tired! And next weekend we have another big local expo where my shop will have a stand, so I have another busy week of getting clothing stock that I've just received sorted and priced. Joan I can totally relate when you say you've become lazy, and also when you don't want the traffic lights to change so you don't have to brake! But well done for taking the plunge and driving again, it's great to go where we want to go without having to get someone else to take us, isn't it? Apart from walking around the house and garden, I haven't even thought of doing any exercise this last week and I get so cross with myself when I look in the mirror and see how flabby I've got! And I keep forgetting to put the gear fit thingy pedometer on.... Bob I admire your determination,  you really have got back into your exercising even though you know that in 10 days time you'll be back to square one. At least you'll know what to expect with your next foot so hopefully it will go easier.

But I have really made progress this last week since my cast came off - I'm walking heel to toe well and only use one crutch some of the time and when I leave the house. I gave my foot a good massage with tissue oil today and was surprised that it wasn't tender anywhere even with applying some pressure. I can't actually understand where the pain is coming from when it does get sore! I can bend my big toe down a little, but absolutely can not bend it up - it doesn't hurt, just won't budge. I really must start PT this week but am a bit scared because I know that that will hurt, my physiotherapist will make it bend up! My scar is looking beautiful, I'm very impressed with how small an incision my surgeon worked with.

Kim how did your husband do in his triathlon? Are you as energetic as him when you're able to be again?

Jenny hope you managed to get lots of time with your Grandson? Is he home for good now or will he get deployed again?

Anita are you still on 2 crutches? Just keep trying the heel to toe walk, the more you do it the easier it feels. Don't be in too much of a hurry to ditch the crutches,  they become more for balance than for support, you don't want to be falling over again. And don't be too scared of driving - I was  also really worried about it, but with my husband leaving I just had to do it and I find so long as you're wearing a good solid soled shoe it doesn't hurt much at all - I've been pushing the accelerator with the outside of my foot so can favour my big toe.

Rena hope all is well with you, and Mel hope you had a great sailing trip.

Wishing everyone a great week ahead with lots of progress
