Hello there
Posted , 29 users are following.
Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

Week 11 Day 4
Welcome to life at this stage of the journey! It gets better every day but in baby steps......suddenly going for a walk is a pleasure(as long as it's not too long), your feet start to look really good and you stop thinking about them all the time! Painting your toe nails is fun (today they're gold) and your old shoes start to fit again (but not all day because your feet stil swell up)! You start to get your confidence back.
Keep going all of you at 7 or 8 weeks-it does get better and yes it does hurt less-l know what you're going through. Be brave!

Forgot to say-keep exercising those toes! Most important thing you can do even if its difficult.

Your right about the exercises I think it had made a difference I am able to grip more with big toe and this has seemed to help my limp.
Can't wait to get my new laptop instead of using my phone.

-warm up toes by wiggling them with your hands
-circle ankles around 5 times each way
-wiggle toes up and down, pressing them in to the floor
-the mexican wave with your toes(pilates exercise)-difficult but makes your big toe work
-foot arch exercises
-stand on tips of toes then flat on ground
-balance on one foot with toes spread so weight evenly balanced
-using exercise band extend toes against stretch of bsnd
-collapse in an exhausted heap and ice for an hour-with a glass of wine!
Woops fogot the famous tissue/towel crunches-very important. Try picking up marbles with just your toes instead!
I'm sure that the v between your toes will become less with time-mine on my right foot looks great now-the left has a bigger gap but I'm not too bothered by it.

Hi All,
We've had a lovely sunny weekend for the triathalon in Wales. My husband did really well, he came 7th in his category and beat his last year's time by 7 minutes and 2 seconds. He's not fanatical about his diet, and had pie and chips with a few beers the night before the race!
Patricia- no I'm not as energetic as him. I play badminton and do Morris dancing and that's about it, but I've decided to do more as soon as I am able.
Joan - I can't take any time off work as holiday at the moment as there's a lot of catching up to do, especially as my colleague went off sick as soon as I went back! I've got 2 weeks off next month though, hooray!
Walking and driving is getting easier, and I'm moving the toe more.
Bob- I picked up the towel for 2 seconds, but then realised it was with my second toe! Oh well, one day!
Hope everyone else is ok. One week, then it's a Bank Holiday weekend in England.

Busy, busy....and it feels so good. Am pretty much back to normal with usual daily routines and activities. My walking improves bit by bit and almost no limp at this point if I watch my speed. It's still somewhat uncomfortable on ball of foot and swelling occurs if overdo it. I don't always need ice anymore...just elevating for 15 or 20 minutes sometimes is good enough. If I overdo it then yes, ice is definitely my best friend
Have noticed recently how my New Balance trainers are squishing my toes...am so aware of trying to keep a more natural splay happening since the surgery. Did some research on the Correct Toes and discovered the "no drop" type of minimalist sport shoe which basically give you a natural wide and roomy toe box and a no slope sole, i.e. totally even height from heel to forefoot so the foot does not slope down and put pressure on the forefoot. The make I saw on the website is called Altara. In Toronto there are only a very small number running stores that carry it and even then only 2 or 3 styles. Will order from shoeme dot ca who have a couple of styles I'd like to try and they have free no hassle returns.
Kim....congratulations ! That's wonderful about your hubbie's success. I bet your weekend was especially sweet because of it.
So glad to hear all is getting easier...we keep proving to each other that yes, with patience, we will ALL reach the finish line.
Joan and Eileen....I would so love to see those gold toenails! Can you post a pic? I must give myself a pedicure tomorrow....still don't feel I'd like to get one professionally just yet with my swollen hammertoe still happening.
Joan, I feel your excitement about your new laptop. I actually just picked one up today and am typing on it now. It's one with a touch screen and folds in a number of different positions so can act as both a laptop and a tablet.
Eileen....thanks so much for posting your ROM exercise routine....have printed out and will try a number of them. I especially like the last step...ice and wine !! CHEERS!
Patricia....I feel your exhaustion! I too found it exhausting the first while after starting to walk in shoes...it does get better! Actually one day you'll just realize...gee..I'm not exhausted like before...Sounds like this upcoming week will be a challenge. I do hope you can sit and elevate when needed when manning that booth at the show!
Anita......isn't it wonderful to be getting out more? The last time I was at Costco, that HUGE warehouse store, I used my knee scooter and felt less tired at the end than if I had walked around. And good for you that you're getting alot of walking in. Can you describe what it feel like to walk in that boot? It looks so hot and heavy !!
Bob...it concerns me that your foot is still sore. What is causing that? The walking? The gym? Is it sore when elevated? Hope you gave yourself a break today.
Sweet dreams all.....although most of you are in lala land already...it's 10:00 pm here.

Back at work, still light duties as my job needs me on my feet for 8hrs.
Spoke to my manager who as been really good with me, and he said he understands, and to stay on light duties for a couple more weeks.
Im good on my feet but when walking I really have to think about walking heal to toe. If I dont I walk as if I still have the BIG BLACK SHOE on. I have found that my hip is sore due to the adapted walk you do when getting back on your feet. I will get an appointment at the oseopath this week.
The tendons between my big toe and next toe are still very tight bit I am working on them.
Physologically this operation as been very difficult for me I still find myself crying sometimes. Mainly because my normal things were difficult to do and some still are.
I have also had to deal with my dad and his Dementia and now he is in hospital recovering fron Pnuemonia
POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE............what doesnt klll you makes you stronger
.
Finally yesterday was in garden all day weeding cutting back etc. All I can say is there is an EXPLOSION of snails in my garden.
Now Im on a mission to exterminate them. I will enjoy. 25 deg in london today its going to be hot hot HOT, Snails dont like hot dry weather Extermination on its way

It's 2 weeks now that I'm concentrating on the heel to toe and an added new thing for me is to lead with my right good foot to strengthen that leg. No question that forcing myself to walk slowly was best to get that motion in as completely as possible and now I can get it in even at a more moderate speed. So it does work.....and will work...and there is light at the end of the tunnel! We just don't know how long it will take us to reach it !! [rolleyes] As Bob would say....keep working it !!! .....or in other words, use it or lose it (my mantra at this stage of life LOL!) [razz]

Further to Philip's reply:
When using mobiles you will not be able to use the Bold/Italics/Emoticons and Image uploading. This is because we had to put a simple text editor in the mobile version as some phones could not handle the new reply boxes therefore users could not post at all. So if you want to include a picture you will have to use the desktop site or you can link to a photo sharing site but this will go for moderation before being posted.
User nicknames are now limited to 15 characters for new accounts. Existing long names will still work but if you do edit them you will have the 15 limit. Rather than have long names you can use the "About me" to give a summary or description of your case if this is useful. At the moment this is found here https://patient.info/forums/user/profile. This is then viewable when a user clicks on your username.
Regards,
Alan

When you post in a discussion, if you use the Reply to Jenny031951 box at the top of the page this puts the comment in the main thread of the discussion as a separate comment with your Name > Jenny031951. When you reply to an individual comment this starts a "nested" conversation within the main thread. Whoever you reply to within this thread will be on the reply, ie I have replied to Rena's comment at the top of this "sub-discussion" but this post will appear at the end of the nested conversation and will say Emis Moderator > Rena2645. The sub-discussions are ordered by time/date posted wherever the reply is posted within the nested thread.
Rena - this is why your posts in the sub-discussion above appeared below my reply. I have moved Joan's comment to her post below and deleted my reply above and your duplicate posts to make the discussion above flow again. I have also deleted your duplicate "cut-off" replies further back in the discussion. I will delete this entire sub-discussion once it has been here long enough for users to read so this discussion can get back to the topic but if anyone is having any problems using the forums please message me or use the discussion Philip linked to in his post here.
https://patient.info/forums/discuss/new-style-forums-196496
There is going to be a release to the site, probably later today, which will put a "Reply to Jenny031951's discussion" at the bottom of each page so these replies will appear in the main thread. What we have found is users are replying to the last comment at the bottom of the page therefore starting a nested discussion rather than carrying on the main discussion.
I hope this helps but please do let me know via message or the other discussion if you are still confused or need more advice.
Regards,
Alan

Week 11, day 5 Was busy this weekend with cleaning up around the house and some yard work. Friday I sat a lot finishing up The Book Thief. What a great book! I borrowed it from the digital library but I am thinking about buying a copy of it. It was one of my favorite books ever. Saw my grandson for a few hours. So good to hug him!
Patricia..unfortunately he will be deployed again.
Bob..I worry about you. I really think you are pushing too hard. Can you back off a little so your foot has time to recover a bit and hopefully it won't be so sore?
Joan..glad you are feeling better today. I got down at times as well. I think it is frustration creeping in from not being able to get around like normal. This too shall pass. Hang in there!
Eileen..I did my toes as well yesterday! Must have been pedicure weekend..lol
Kim..congratulations to your husband, that is quite impressive indeed! Hope you are feeling well!
Rena..Thanks for the heads up on the trainers! I am definitely looking them up. I wear Brooks right now, which have a wide toe box and I love them but always looking for other shoes too. I love shoes!! Glad you are doing so well. I only used ice once yesterday and that was at bedtime after exercises.
Be..you are so lucky to have an employer that "gets it" about light duty. Keep up the good work!
Hope I didn't forget anyone. Today I am going to give my bedroom a thorough cleaning as my hubby is a pack rat! He saves everything and I mean everything and just leaves it laying around on the dressers. After it has been there for a few weeks, I clean it off, put it in a box and hide it under the bed. After a couple of more weeks if he doesn't inquire about it's whereabouts, I toss it! Ha ha ha..been doing this for 44 years of marriage and not once has he noticed.
