Hello there

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

    9 WEEKS

Morning. Going to be up in out early. Gym workout, PT today. Back is really bothering me. Not sure why and did'nt get a good nights rest. Had a good day yesterday with mom. Got her out and had lunch with her and my girlfriend and I wheelchaired her up to the fishing pier to watch all the surfers. Little blessings in life.

Joan - Enjoy these days feeling good. Live each day to the fullest. October will roll around fast.

Patricia - PT does cause bits of pain . Different pain. Pain that comes along with getting better. Pain can be a motivator for me in rehab. '' JUST DO IT''  Enjoy the hockey game. Remember as an athlete growing up seeing my mom at my games meant ''EVERYTHING''. Remember the rules. Have fun, play hard, do your best!!!

Rena - ( CEO - Bunion Mum ) Thanks for always caring. Even though it may seem like i'm reckless, I do take very good care of myself. 100% PURE DETERMINATION!!!!!

Holler out to  Nitagirl, Spice girl Mel , Kimmy, Rena 2, be , Bunion Babes Rock!!

Let's find pleasure even in the simple little routines today of our daily living, like HAVING a couch with an ice pack to lay on. Make sure we all move our stuff around!!!!! Let's go after it!!!!

    Good morning! Week 12!

Woke up this morning with a swollen sore foot.  Not too happy about that. Don't know if it is because of much more walking or putting the orthotics in.  He was going to wean me back into them when I see him on Friday but honestly, I could not stand it any longer.  My arches are very high but the second I step on my foot, they collapse completely.  I was having so much pain on the top of my foot near the outside, I couldn't stand to walk.  That is much better now but the bunion and the plantar's fasciitis scar are in rare form.  Oh well, this too shall pass. I hope!  Been stressing over what shoes I can wear to my grandsons wedding on the 28th of June as I know it will not be heels.  I found these lovely Fit Flops online, that have Swarkovski crystals on them!  I ordered a pair and can't wait to get them. Now to find a dress.

    Welcome Rena2!

Hope everyone has a pain free, less swollen day!

It amazes me how similar we are Jenny.  I too have a very high arch until I step on it.   Maybe you need a less extreme/rigid orthotic until your foot is fully recovered....do you have those Dr. Scholl's machines in drugstores that you can step on and it will tell you which of their orthotics you need?  I am wearing one of theirs in my sneakers and find it comfortable.  I think it costs something like $40 (probably less in the U.S.)  Or even just trying an off the shelf arch support in the meantime.  Good luck!  I feel your pain girl !! confused

Rena, you are brilliant!  Of course that is what is wrong, the orthotics are rather stiff and hard.  I do have the Dr. Scholl's that you stand on that machine and I dug them out of my "insoles bin" and put them in my tennis shoes.  Tomorrow I will use them and see how it goes.  And yes, I have a plastic bin that is full of different insoles.  Oh the joys of bad feet.

Hope it works for you today Jenny! smile  I've been doing that 2nd toe manipulation.....actually 10's of times at once and it's getting easier for sure....but I do hear a clicking or popping sound when I move the joint. Are you finding that too?

    WEEK 10

An achievement to get here.  Theatre last night, pretty uncomfortable experience again, really not enough room to stretch your legs out, great show though, dinner first with my daughter, left the house at 5pm and got back at 11pm - foot was rather swollen and purple, and has been not quite right today.  Before the theatre though I had been to the gym, and at a playgroup, so it was a busy day.

Rena Toronto, yes it is Windows 8 on my laptop,  I must download the manual and read some of it.

Spoke to Dr today, and my back to work date is 2nd June, I am ready to go back but a bit scared too, work is talking about hours 10 - 4 at first, but I think that is rather a lot to start with,  not confirmed yet, my actual line manager is on holiday so I cant speak to her until next week.  My preferred hours would be 4 hours a day for the first 3 days, then up to 6.  Oh well I will wait and see what the HR department come up with.  The manager I was talking to said," but you will be just sitting at your desk"  - Ahhhh sitting - foot down for maybe 8 hours, plus travelling to and from work, they just don't understand.

I am going to enjoy my last days off, my daughter has booked me for babysitting for 3 days already, told her I need some me time too.  Looking forward to New shoes and new clothes shopping, maybe visit hairdresser and for a manicure, ohh all sounds great fun.

I am off for a walk in the sun, its 6.30pm in Glasgow, and rain is forecast for tomorrow .  Have a great day/night whatever time it is

I've just lost a long post!

    Pah!

Anyway, basically, week 9 today and still limping due to the pain in the ball of my foot and ankle.Had a day off work today and have done a lot of housework  gardening and walking so the foot is swollen and warm now. I'm trying to exercise my toe more so it's more flexible by the time I see the consultant again on June 12th.

Looking forward to the bank  holiday weekend when we'll be away in our caravan. Hope the weather stays good!

Hope everyone has had a good recovery day today.

    Morning!!

    WEEK 7 DAY 6

Getting up more and more and not using the crutch. I actually went downstairs this morning for the first time since.  It was clean downstairs, lol.  It is currently 20C (68F) but  supposed to reach 25C (77F) here today, woohoo.  Have all the windows and doors open right now.  Loving it. I am going to take my first unassisted shower today. Usually hubby gets it all set up with shower chair etc.  I want to prove to myself that life is returning slowly to normal.

Making a nice stir fry for dinner tonight or I may change it to tacos depending on how HOT it gets in the house.  I know I know, us CANADIANS think that is hot, lol.

Planning a visit with my Mom after dinner. My husband is practising dragon boat racing tonight and it is close to the hospital.  There is a reservoir ( looks like a lake) and so pretty and the hospital looks down on it. So Mom and I will be sitting in the sunshine watching the practice.  She seems to be getting a little better. I am thinking another 3 weeks.

Hope all are doing well and moving on in life.  Its been such great support having you all here to read and write to everyday and catching up in your lives. I feel like I know you all personally.

    Enjoy your day!!

    8 WEEKS 1 DAY

Hi there all!  I am just so encouraged with the comfort level of my walking....especially in toe socks with crocs for that wide toe box. The ball of my foot hardly hurts at all now unless I have overdone things and there's more swelling than usual. I am finding that regular socks cramp my toes too much....something that I never really thought of before. Am still working on getting the right size trainer in the Altra.  The ones I got are too snug in the length with the toe socks.  Will exchange for a half size larger.  Am so glad it's now warmer and I will be able to wear sandals more.  I just ordered a couple of pair of Orthaheel which should arrive today and am anxious to see how they feel on the ex-bunion area....so, as all of you before me know it's very much a work in progress!

Bob....can you tell us where the pain is in the foot? Mine tends to be the ball of the foot and soreness in the swollen hammertoe. Are you managing ok with  the heel to toe ? Hope you have a better day today.  You are so lucky to have a beach to get too!  Would love to now walk in the sand by the ocean.

Joan....you're making me guilty with your gym progress.  I've yet to get there sad  You are so fortunate to have a position that allows you as much time as you need for the surgeries.  I could never have done mine while working, let alone think of doing two in one year!  Will you be able to keep your foot elevated at work when necessary?

Kim.....I'm the queen of losing posts ! LOL  Sure know the frustration of it....like wanting to fling the laptop !!!???  A number of you British gals have mentioned "caravan".  I assume it's some kind of time away and fun....can you explain?  That ball of the foot issue is all to familiar to me....slower and more complete heel to toe is helpful....the slower also doesn't put as much pressure on the forefoot I found.  Now I'm not needing  to be so slow most of the time but go back to it when necessary.

Jenny.....how wonderful!  A grandchild's wedding is a precious thing to experience.  My great-niece is getting married August 8th in Edmonton, Alberta.  My sister is beside herself with excitement !!!  Good luck with your shopping for such a wonderful occasion !

Anita and Mel.....know from FB you're out there and kicking.  Hope you have a good day and the same to all others reading this thread.  It' a gorgeous warm day here.  Am babysitting this afternoon for my niece's 6 month old and am looking forward to a wonderful walk in the park smile

Rena, em caravan - a holiday home on a special site usually beside the seaside.  You would usually have an entertainment complex with bars and maybe swimming pool and there may be carberet shows and special shows for children, a place to let your hair down, and outdoor fun for the kids, playparks.  Kids just love them, camping without the tent.  You can own one, or just hire one for your holidays, usually a cheaper type of holiday for a family.  You can google caravan holidays in the uk, you will see what I mean.

I dont know how easy it will be to elevate at my desk, hoping I wont need to.

I dont have any foot news today, everything seems as normal as possible for this stage. I am still limping though, making a conscious effort to stop it, to walk slow and dont limp, it shall come.

Did not bad at the gym, though probably not enough effort to get rid of this tummy.  I will try harder, Bob.

Its nearly the weekend, plus a holiday weekend and I have a date with a friend for afternoon tea on Sunday, we havenot been out together since before the operation, looking forward to a good old chin wag.

    Happy healing All

    week 8 day 3

I'm battling this week - doing too much! My daughter's hockey game was hectic as they played  4 x 10 min matches and kept changing fields so I was constantly up and down - managed to prop my foot up on my crutch though. She played beautifully, scored quite a few goals and their school team won overall. Then yesterday and today has been setting up for this weekend's expo - I've hired casuals to man the stand as I could not have managed that, but I have to be there for the set up which has been a lot of carrying, walking and standing, so all not good for my foot! I'm having an hour foot up lie down at the moment, but must get back to the expo shortly to make sure the stand looks how I want it to look. Last night we went to a fundraiser movie premier for our local cat shelter - my first time back at a cinema since the op, it wasn't too bad but still a bit uncomfortable. I'm thinking that next time I go to the cinema I must just buy the seat in front of me as well so then I can put my foot up on a cushion on the back of the seat in front! I started off like that last night but unfortunately ( although fortunately for the organisers! ) it was fully booked so someone came to sit in front of me.

Hope you all are having a good day today, I must get up now and back to work.....

    WEEk 9 Day 2

Morning. Another cloudy day. Tomorrow starts the tourist season where we live. Kaos on weekends. Everywhere will be packed for the next 3 months. Had a good day yesterday. Gym and then volunteered and helped paint a big meeting hall in our community. By the end of the day I was whooped and sore. I had a fracture of the 5th metatarsal before surgery and now that i'm walking differently I think I refractured it. Heard and felt a  crack last week and it's very painful. the bunion part of my foot seems to be coming along well. Still much swelling. 5 days until next surgery.

Today back to the gym, PT then off to be with mom.

NITAGIRL - Hope you enjoy your visit with mom. I understand what you are going thru. Keep working on your steps. You and mom are in my prayers.

RENA - Glad to hear you are walking without much pain. Hopefully you WILL get to walk in the sand one day soon with your new feet. I can't wait until I no longer have to hide them on August 1st, my goal date to be on the beach!!!

JOAN - Hang in there at work. Some days may be just flat out difficult. One day at a time and make sure you get to that gym. Good for the mind as well as our health.

PATRICIA - Watching your daughter play hockey are some the the best memories you will make. I've coached high school baseball and I loved my baseball mom's. Well most of them. Had a few that where difficult at times only because they thought there kids where better then they really where and wanted to tell me how I should be coaching. Still loved them tho. I'm also in that '' DOING TO MUCH CLUB''

Hope everyone has a somewhat painfree day!!!! Remember we have to work on our mood management to get thru this. biggrin

    WEEK 8!!

WOW, cant beleive I survived that long, lol. Had a nice visit with my Mom lat night sitting in the sun and watching my husband practice with his team for Dragon Boat.  After an hour we went inside and played some rummy until hubby showed up to pick me up.

Its going to be another WARM day here 25C and the windows and doors are open alreay and its just 14C at the moment. I am working on my walking more and more. I am supposed to wear the BOOT when ever I walk.  I wonder if I can try without? Maybe I better wait till my appointment next Thursday.

I had my FIRST unassisted shower yesterday, woo hoo. Felt so good to get my indepence back. Hubby was at work and I did it all on my own. Sounds like a child, but you all understand how liberating each small step is.

Bob, hang in there. You best go to the Dr and find out about that fracture. You need to be really up and moving before going under the knife again.  Your pushing too hard. Sounds rather busy with all those tourists around. Have a nice visit with your Mom today.

Rena, are you going to the wedding in Edmonton?  I wish I was around then I would come up and visit with you, but we always go to BC for the summer. Your doing great with your walking.

Joan, have a wonderful visit with your friend. Its so good to get out and return to normal life. Enjoy your long weekend.  The Caravan holiday sounds great.

Patricia, Hang in there girl.  Its hard all this real life stuff.  Be nice to your foot and dont overdo it.  Remember to elevate and ice, very important.  Must have be nice to get out and watch your daughter at the game.

MEL sp, let us know your still around.  Thinking about you and your new sexy foot.

Have a great day and remember to be kind to your foot. Just because your not in as much pain doesnt mean you dont have to baby it. Forward we step, one step at a time. Thankful for all the wonderful people here and the progress we are all making.

    Week 9 day 2

Just walked down to the hairdressers- first haircut since before the op! The hairdresser was horrified with my foot scar, (which I actually think looks quite good now), people don't realise how invasive this surgery is. Foot is still hurting when walking and is a bit swollen but I just keep walking really slowly with a bit less of a limp now.

Heard a horror story yesterday about a friend of a friend's foot op. that she had done in early March. Basically - after bleeding a lot into her dressings she returned the next day to sort it out and they found that her wound hadn't been stitched up! Incredible! She had to stay in for 3 days as she'd lost so much blood. Luckily that must be extremely rare.

Happy healing everyone, and have a good weekend.
