Hello there

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

Thanks Lynn. Totally related to running 4 - 5 times a week and body revolting due to inactivity. ( Still do ab crunches everyday and knee pushups ) Glad you are bouncing back. Inspiration. Still no painkillers and I've been told getting stitches out may be painful. You will be back golfing and running in no time. Gotta keep telling MYSELF!. Good at fixing other peoples proplems. LOL

Shannon Welcome. This is a great place. Grateful to have found it.

Jillyco - Bored Bob? Bob bored? LOL

Jan - Good luck with your plaster removal. Progress not perfection!!!

Jennygirl - Where ya at ?

Anita - Enjoy your day to the fullest!!

Well went out today for an hour. Foot feels a bit swelled. Back on the couch with ice. Saint Annette still coming up huge!!! Tuna salad for lunch. Made beef stew for dinner. Life is good. Grateful for the little things. Have a great day my friends!! Love and Respect!

My- everyone is so chatty today! I like Bob's 'grateful for the little things'. I think all this inactivity does make you feel grateful.....we will all get better and in the not too distant future!

It's been a very sunny day here in Perthshire- but very cold as I found out when I walked to the end of the road and back. That was my first 'long' walk......must start building up the distance. I am on heel walker shoes with no plaster so my journey was slow!

I had a sore back for the first few days but found that changing where I sat every few hours made a difference and now I'm fine.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday.

Sorry been really busy today. Welcome Shannon, your my neighbour, Alberta here. Yesterday I made a BIG pot of Turkey Meatballs with 4 freezer meals in the freezer. Today was a cook feast again. Went grocery shopping and then made 5 containers for lasanga. Then I made 4 containers of stuffed shells. Tomorrow more cooking and I am beat. The plan is to make Taco soup and chicken roll ups tomorrow. Need to be sure we have things to eat. Hubby is going to work and will be busy enough. The way I feel right now, I cant wait to lay on the couch and do nothing at all. Have a great night all and its another day tomorrow.

Good evening everyone! Been a busy day for me. Went shopping with hubby. Got home and the foot wasn't as swollen as yesterday! Yay!! I got some Arnica gel yesterday and I've been using it on the burning, stinging pain between the incision on the bottom of my foot and the incision going up behind my ankle. Then I put it on the bunion and toe as well. I really think it is helping. Sounds like everyone is doing good. I am going to get some Scarguard silicone sheets and start using them. I read wonderful things about them.

Bob, I agree, take a pain pill before you go for suture removal. I had 35 sutures to come out on my foot and it was no fun!

Welcome Shannon! This group has been a life saver for me during this.

    Have a good evening everyone!

Morning bunion less people (except for Anita).

Welcome Shannon. I am in Derbyshire Peak District UK. You know what to expect having already had one done, but it is nice to have this contact with others. I have found it useful and yes good laughs sometimes.

Bob, I was lucky I had dissolving sutures but they snipped the ends which stung a bit. Don't worry, sure it won't be as bad as you think.

Anita, is your hubby going to be with you for first 48 hrs, after your op?

Sunny. But very frosty and cold here today. Might venture out later, if it warms up later.

    Have a good day all.

Good morning everyone!! I have been waking up early these days as I am worried about this coming Friday. I have so much to do before I am living on the couch for 6 weeks. Yes, my hubby will be with me for the whole weekend. Starting to stress here!! It is going to be painful?? or will the pain killers they give me do it. Just the thought of not cooking real food scares me. Living on the couch for 6 weeks!! Never leaving the house except to go to Doctors appointments. No driving. Independence taken away. I am so ready to cancel but I cant, I need it done. Every one thinks this is so easy. Maybe they need to get 2 screws in them. I am officially going to be screwed, lol. Just thought of that. Guess I need to make some humor eh! Enjoy your day!! More cooking planned her today.

Dear Anita, I felt exactly the way you are - gloom and doom. But the reality is quite good. First couple of days a bit iffy but don't really remember them - my husband just kept putting the pills down me. By day 4 I could get downstairs - only a couple of hours but it made a change. By day 7 I was downstairs 2-3 hours a day and been taken out a couple of times. Day 18 now and I feel a complete fraud. Can get round the house pretty well. Been all the way downstairs and sat with my customers for a coffee (we own a café) and am back up going to do some ironing before an afternoon of things I want to watch and of course the foot elevated. This is the best rest I have had in years!!. Now if someone can tell me how to get a bunion on the other foot I could have 6 weeks off work next year and catch up with myself all over again! YOU WILL BE FINE and wonder why you worried so much! I know I am xx

Jilly, thanks for that. I know I am not the only one and it will get better. Its so nice to be able to vent on here and get a reply for others that went through the same thing. Yes, life will be fine but its just hard to envision it right now. Really, you would like the other foot done, ha ha. Some have a lot of pain while others dont. Guess I will find out very soon, 4 more sleeps, how I will be. The countdown is on. Thanks for reading my rant here.

Bob, how are you today? How is the pain and how is your Saint holding out?

Eileen and Shannon how are you both today?

Who did I miss?? Sorry if I missed you I cant seem to scroll back and its 4am here.

    Hi Anita

I was terrified prior to my op but as Jill says, you will be fine and wonder why you worried so much. The pain levels change daily and those first few days will soon be a distant memory.

Keep yourself busy until Friday and take some deep breaths. Have lots of magazines to hand too in case you don't feel up to reading a novel.

My pin comes out tomorrow. It can't stay in forever and I wouldn't want it to. I'll probably be skipping by the end of the week.

Anita, I cannot tell you how frightened I was before surgery. I have a connective tissue disease and this is surgery #13 for me. I was a wreck! It is not as bad as I expected. Recovery is slower for me because of my disease and I had 4 procedure done on the same foot. I also have been screwed! lol..that made me chuckle in your post. Try to relax. I know it's easy to say and hard to do, but you will do fine. I get bored some but I just take it all in stride and try to find something else to do which is usually surfing around the net. There is so much out there that I don't know about so I try to find new things which usually ends up hours of fun. The pain has not been as bad as I expected and nothing that the Percocet or Advil can't handle. I took Percocet for 3 days then just Advil. I just keep my mind how how amazing my foot looks without that huge bump and without my second toe sitting over the big one!!!!

Day 6. Last night I woke up in the middle of the night in the most pain yet after a full day not in pain at all. The good news is two of my best buddies stopped over with a brand new flat screen tv. Way cool. Felt like Xmas. Doctors appointment today. See how that goes. Still no painkillers .

Anita. It will be ok. We have alot of cool people and good support here. Saving our energy for surgery opposed to using it up worrying about something that hasen't happened yet may be a better option. We all have been there so we understand,

Saint Annette is still rock solid taking care of bored Bob!

My goal this week is to get to the nursing home to see my mother. Was there just about every night at dinner to feed her due to a couple strokes she had. Life get's lifey. It's how we react to it without harming ourselves or others. Have a great day and remember, there are always other people that have it worse then us.

Morning again!! I went back to bed for an hour and now am up. Have so much to do today. Going grocery shopping, and its laundry day around here as well as make a BIG pot of Taco soup for the freezer and Chicken Lasanga Rollups. Will have some for dinner too. Hubby thinks I am preparing too much and keeps telling me he can cook. He made breakfast two Sundays ago and the sausage were so over cooked they would bounce around the room. He also made scrambled eggs that came out grey. Why grey you ask? He cooked them for 20mins. So now you know why I am getting some food ready. Its going to be a long 6 weeks and so far I have 2 weeks of meals in the freezer. I still want to make Turkey Enchiladas and a Big pot of Turkey Soup. We are having a Turkey for dinner here on Wednesday. No company just the two of us. I want the leftovers.

Jan and Jenny, thanks for that. I know I will be fine and I will enjoy my foot looking normal. Its been so many years now I cant even imagine it looking different although it has gotten worse the last few years. My other toes have shifted towards the right. Not sure if they will shift back but will see and hope. Hang in there Jenny.

Bob, WOW a TV, you sure have nice friends. I need one too so you can send them this way lol. I am really thinking of getting Netflix cause real TV is boring. I know how you feel with regards to Mom's. I am a caregiver for my Mom. At the moment she is in the hospital receiving ECT treatments, for anyone not knowing what that is, its electric shock. She has depression really bad sometimes. She was getting depressed about a few things and one major thing is me getting this surgery. SHe doesnt know who will do the laundry, the cooking and the cleaning, etc. I told them about my surgery and at the end of the week they are sending her to the part of the hospital called Rest and Rehab for 2 weeks? I am hoping. I told them that I just cant take care of her for at least 2. She was home this weekend and we started packing and she is worried about going and not seeing me for 2 weeks. I am sure we will have this all sorted through by the time she gets back. I just hope that they find the right medications so she can enjoy a few more years of life. She is 81 years young and has had a hard life. I guess we all have our problems big or small. Mine is small compared to hers.

To anyone visiting this forum for the first time and contemplating surgery - do investigate if your doctors offer the Ludloff Plate procedure. I cannot express this enough.

You are up and about within day 2 so there is no chance for muscle atrophy. You do need to continue to elevate and ice for swelling. I was given a driving boot after five days and had strips of medical tape placed over the incision so I could resume taking normal showers - no foot covering required.

Granted, this procedure is not for everyone. I had a double osteotomy and tendon/ligament cut which is probably the basic procedure (no pins for straightening the toes), no hammer toes, etc.

I feel blessed to have found my Orthopedic Surgeon as I did not have the luxury of staying home for 6-8 weeks as a majority of posters here.

As this procedure is relatively new it shouldn't be long before it becomes the gold standard.

Wishing all here a speedy recovery!

    Hi All

Glad that you're all feeling quite chirpy today- this sunshine is really helping. Although it does really make me want to get going in the garden..................soon I hope.

I feel so like you Jilly- this whole procedure hasn't been nearly as bad as I feared. The danger is that I'm going to overdo things if I'm not really careful. I agree that this is the best rest I've had in years!!

Anita- I know how you are feeling. I was terrified before my op but came through it fine and when I look at my feet I am so glad that I had it done. Even if it takes ages to get fully fit again it will have been worth it- every day I can do a bit more and both feet hurt a lot less. Hope that your Mum settles OK.

Counting my blessings here- thanks for reminding me to do that Bob.
