Hello there

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

Up early and smelling coffee, thats all I can do this morning. Allowed a few sips of water. I am still busy rearranging the living room etc. Last minute stuff. Leaving at 10am so still have time as its only 5.30. Hubby and I went out for Sushi last night and then to the DQ for a blizzard icecream yum!!. Visited with my Mom and then home. I drove and realized the reason why I am having this............was in pain the whole time. I never realized before as you get used to it. Hopefully I can can used to the pain this week too, yikes!! Well this is it for while, life will change for a time. That is going to be the hardest. I know you will all be here and thats a great comfort. Hubby is worried about how we are going to get up the stairs when we get back. We have stairs outside of the house coming up the front entrance. THey do worry me too but slow and steady. I told him what ever time it takes it takes. Once indoors the steps doesnt matter as we wont be in the cold.

We have SNOW out side and its currently -10C, that 14F for Bob.Hubby seems to think that I am going to bed as soon as I get home or at least he think that I will be comfortable their, we shall see. They asked him to come in to work tomorrow for a few hours. I dont see why not as I wont be going anywhere once I hit the couch, new home.

Here I am waving at everyone and joining your boat. We are all in the same one once I return. Pray for me that all goes well and quick.

Final GOOD LUCK my friend. You will be fine. If we can do it so can you. Thank god you have a man who loves you and will take good care of you. Take those steps, one at a time. These are all just mild challanges put in our path. Surrender to the fight!!!! Let people help you. This is coming from someone who doesn't like to ask for help, but getting better at it. The gift is asking and allowing people to be of use. Good luck my friend.

Everyday gets better. Laying around is the biggest obstacle. Went and had a haircut yesterday, lunch with Saint Annette and visited mom at the nursing home. Maybe a little to much on Day 9! Have a great day to the gang biggrin

Hi Carmen. You enquire when others began full weight bearing. I didn't begin full weight bearing for about 10 days post op as I was given a heel wedge shoe which makes the whole weight bearing to fall on the heel. The toes are kept raised in this shoe and have no contact with the walking surface. Whilst this piece of footwear is anything but elegant I did find it wonderful. It is a very slow recovery process after this operation. If the hospital has advised that you should now try full weight bearing but you don't feel happy doing this yet I'd be inclined to just do what you feel most comfortable and if this means you stay off your foot and continue to keep it elevated and rested I'd go with that. The throbbing we experience when the foot is lowered is quite uncomfortable and the relief when the foot is once more elevated brings such relief. Everyone is different in terms of how quickly they recover but I was never given to believe anything other than it would take a very long time for the foot to recover. As you may have seen in my recent postings to this discussion, I am now 17+ weeks post op and whilst the under side of my big/bunion toe is still a bit stiff and it does feel a tiny bit uncomfortable I can honestly say that I'm functioning more or less normally. My walking is less flat footed now as I am able to bend my foot about 85-90% normal. I have been very careful over all these weeks and have only done what I felt I could cope with. I don't want to cause any problems for myself by doing too much too soon. I hope that you will feel progress is on the horizon for you. I certainly have no regrets at having the surgery. Whilst my bunion was never painful it was quite a bad one and the hammertoe next to it was not good and definitely needed attention. That is also looking and feeling good although it doesn't bend very much. I suppose this is no bad thing given before the operation it was very bent downwards. I don't expect the stiffness will improve much, if at all, but I'm not worried. It's fine and causes me no trouble now.

Back home and the percocet is making me zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Had to wait 2 hours as the Dr was running late, made me more nervous. Its all over with now. THe pain blocker is still on and hope will be for 6 weeks, ha ha. Not very hungry but making myself eat some of my yummy Turkey soup and a yougurt. Will see how tonight goes. Thanks everyone for your well wishes now I just want to wish the next 6 away.

Welcome home Anita. Way to get it done!!!! Day 10 days are running into nights, nights into days. Only hurts when I don't elevate and ice. Been out in about only in short 1 - 2 hour time frame and then the throbbing and pain starts. Sitting around is the hardest part. Anyway, hope all is well and again we have to take it a day at a time.

Glad it is over for you Anita. Now, let the healing begin. Elevation and ice is the key. Take the pain meds, don't let the pain get in front of you. Easier to control it if you stay in front of it. Rest, rest and more rest!

Good morning, I am officially in the club. Wasnt hungry last night, very unusual for me, but I made myself eat a little. Percocet are good??? I took two every 4 hours last night and just before bed. Leg woke me up at 1 and 5am. Only taking one now. I will do he every 4 hours thing. This icing every hour for 20mins is a pain......man you sure realize how fast time goes on this schedule. Hubby made me a boiled egg this, very very hard oh well its only 6 weeks right. Thank god for cereal but I was just in the mood this morning for eggs. He went to work for a few hours this morning and left me with a BIG bowl of fruit, strawberries, pineapple, rasp and grapes. Will get into it soon. Also on muscle relaxants and antibiotics. They are hard on the stomach so have to make sure there is something in me.

Oh ya, the doctor showed me how straight my toe is before I left. I wanted and asked to be knocked out, but I was awake through it all, grrrrrrr. Didnt like that on bit. So I joked with them the whole time. Lots of electric sawing was going on and I asked if he was using a chainsaw, lol. Thankfull the one hour went pretty fast. Glad its over and now the recovery starts.

Sleeping was a little different. Hubby and I changed sides of the bed as his side is the one closest to the bathroom. Had to get up twice and I didnt drink after 7pm either. I also slept all night with my foot under two pillows. My back didnt like that kind of sleeping all night. Thank goodness for my lazy boy this morning.

Here is a question I have for all. What day is the pain the worst?? How far do you elevate your foot during the day. One pillow, two pillows. Its not above my nose, should it be??

Hope all are doing well today. I am into Netflix right now. Now that hubby isnt here I have the icing to do. Life is grand when you only have a few things on your todo list now.

Anita, glad to know you're on the road to recovery. The first two days were the worst for me, but the meds controlled the pain. Just remember to keep food on your stomach so you won't get nauseated. I was told to keep my feet above my heart for a couple of weeks and then I could lower them to hip level. Just do what your body tells you. Rest, elevation and ice are the keys to pain free living!

Anita - sounds like your right where your supposed to be. 10 days and the pain is minimal, What is bothersome is the numbness, burning and cold feeling on a daily basis. Make sure you eat with those meds. Elevation and Ice is the key. I still get throbbing occasionally. Hang in there.

Day 18 - been pretty sore last night and today but don't know if that is because I have been going more. Just hope I not have an infection, I will try rest more. Was trying not to take painkillers but gave in.

Anita- that sounds horrible to be awake. Hope your doing well, sleep lots and let your body mend.

Didnt stay ahead of my pain meds so I felt it. Not a good thing. But I wont be doing that again. Was alright today but for sure could feel it. Hubby and I watched Skyfall, we have seen it but again is good too. Hopefully tonight will go well sleeping.

Up at 1am, foot has sharp shooting pains near the top. I am icing it and it feels better. They only said to ice the ankle and under the knee, but I should know best right? Stomach is very queasy from all the meds so drinking sparkling water and eating crackers. What to do at 1am? First time this pain has started and I know everyone said the first 3-5 you have to survive. I hope it doesnt stay like this for too long. Thank goodness for Netflix and Desperate housewives. How is everyone today?

Hi Anita. Glad that it's all over. Pain will get less and then co me and go in all different places!!

I worked on Friday (short staffed again) and did far too much yesterday as my Daughter and son In law are staying here for Mothers Day. Being waited on today. Plan to do as little as possible.

Even though I am now 6 weeks, I still have pain and can't bend my foot as well as I would like. I can't get any shoes on. A bit frustrating at this stage. Patience. It will get better.

What I am trying to say is take each day as it comes. You will have good/ bad days - all normal

Plan to enjoy lovely sunny day today.
