How long does it take LPR to heal?

Posted , 27 users are following.

Dear all,

Having read numerous threads I haven’t read one yet that actually describes the length of time it’s taken for LPR to go.

In fact I’ve read lots from people who are still suffering but no real concrete account of how someone has beaten it.

I would love to hear someones experience and what worked for them but am guessing because they’re healed they’ve managed to move on and stop posting.

I’ve been diagnosed with LPR since July last year and although having been prescribed PPI’s and tried to keep to a strict diet my symptoms are still there.

Back ache, chest ache, sore throat, cough, arm pit ache, sore voice box, lump in throat sensation etc.

I’ve gained relief from sticking to a bland diet, drinking alkaline water, raised the bed, lots of gaviscon, smaller meals, chewing properly, chewing gum etc.

I have no real symptoms at the beginning of the day but as soon as the day progresses it returns.

Just as I feel as though I’m getting some where it returns and I’m back to square one.

So my questions are:

How long does it take to heal?

Are there stages of healing? If so what are they?

What was successful in the healing process?

What food don’t hurt to eat?

Are the sensations and pain there each and everyday?

Does stress play a part in LPR?

I would be extremely grateful if any or all of these questions are answered.

Thanks to everyone in advance.

    Hi Daniel

Ive been on the acid free diet now for 28 days. It’s not easy to come up with something new to eat. I seem to be living off chicken salad, salmon, lots of veg, baked potatoes etc. Only drinking water has been a challenge! I definitely feel there has been an improvement although it’s not 100%. Taking honey 3 times a day seems to have helped.

Did the doctor say that your throat would eventually heal and did they give you a timeline?

I’m living in hope that this will clear up one day.

keep the posts coming. It’s good to hear how others are doing.

    cheers

      Hi Tom,

No I don't think the dr was particularly worried that it was anything serious, he suggested I saw a speech therapist. I then explained that I knew how to control my voice perfectly well. This was actually made worse by singing, which i do as a hobby, I was having voice lessons as I suspected the initial pain I had may have been due to strain and decided it would be a good time to get some formal lessons. My singing teacher was confused as my pain increased week to week without any sign of loss of pitch or range (which would indicate nodules or damage).

I actually had an accident and damaged some muscles in my neck about two years ago which has steadily been improving with physiotherapy. My thinking now is that due to changes in my level of fitness as well as having to spend a lot of time resting on my back is possibly what has caused this problem - if it is an acid problem afterall.

To be honest I cant see what else it would be, no nodules or 'damage' to the throat, no lumps etc.

It makes sense that acid would prevent the throat from healing. When training the voice you are strengthening a muscle and leaving it weakened and vulnerable so I can see the logic. Perhaps I've been given an early indicator to my condition which others may have seen later down the road by being an active singer.

My only confusion is Ive never had any heartburn indigestion or other stomach/digestive related complaints. Up until 2 years ago I was a perfectly fit and healthy young man, so I suspect this may be what has brought it on but doesn't fit the full range of symptoms which go with acid issues.

I was put on medication for a month to calm the stomach which I don't think did much at all. I haven't noticed anything which makes it especially worse other than talking. Though actually now I remember when I first had the problem I had the sensation of food being stuck further up, where the glands are above the tongue. But my actual throat and larynx get more sore depending on how much I have spoken.

I think most doctors aren't particularly worried as im only 27 which seems to be young to have such an odd issue, how old are you and how long have you had the problem if you don't mind me asking?

    Hi Daniel

Your symptoms are exactly like mine. No heartburn at all but I had a sensation of something being stuck in my throat which left me having to clear my throat quite often. The strain developed from there. I did some research and the symptoms seemed to be LPR or Silent Reflux.

I am am a bit older than you (50) but up until recently absolutely no health issues. I thought I ate well, regular in the gym etc. Looking back though my diet was particularly acidic. Red wine, coffee, lots of vinegar or tabasco, tomato based sauces etc...

You will probably find that being on this diet you will lose weight. I’ve lost about half a stone in the last 6 weeks.

Im wondering though if anyone out there can shed some light on recovery times and whether this will eventually heal??

keep in touch and let me know how it goes. Also if you have any low acid recipe tips that would be helpful smile

Smoothies are good. Try banana, mango, fat free yogurt and some water. Very nice.

    cheers

      Hi Tom,

I would have expected that the throat would heal fairly quickly. Though i think it completely depends on how much you use it. If you say it’s improved then I would imagine it will take longer and longer to get back to 100% from that point. Do you have to speak alot at the moment?

In terms of recipes I think ill start adapting the meals soon but atm just getting my head around them. Difficulty is the planning and being so hungry all the time. In fact! Just realised it was time to eat my nuts five minutes ago! :D

My worry is whether the plan is finely balanced. For example, can i eat pesto chicken everyday with parmesan cheese in it, or the feta cheese everyday? I’ve noticed that every once ina while you’re allowed more acidic food and i just wonder if thats only because they’re in it once or twice a week.

It’s certainly cost a lot buying all this stuff and difficult giving up garlic and tomatoes! I have been surprised by how nice some of the dishes are though. Annoying me how many ingredients are popping up that arent on the main list though! Im about to go and buy some almond butter wholewheat flour and agave nectar, no idea where im going to find them!!

Sounds like youre on the road to recovery though. If i was you id be worried about ruining the good ive dine. I might just eat the healing phase diet for 2-3 months. Desperate to get my voice back!

Just reread my first part and realised it didn’t read well. What i mean by that is you get diminished returns. The body usually craps itself with initial trauma and injury and tries hard with the initial injury, and then is much more lax at fixing something once the panic stage is through.

      Hi Daniel

I’ve actually got some good information and food charts that a nutritionist gave me a couple of weeks ago that should help with a balanced diet. Happy to share them with you but not sure how to?

I agree re the healing of the throat. Initially it felt much better but in the past week it’s a bit up and down. Never as bad as it was though. I do need to talk a lot at work therefore that doesn’t help. I’m definitely sticking to this diet for 3 months.

      Cheers

HELLO FOLKS , I AM NEW HERE , BUT HAPPY TO SEE SOME PEOPLE ARE HEALING. I HAVE LPR, BUT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH GERD. I DON'T FEEL ACID OR BURNING, JUST CONSTANT CLEARING OF MY THROAT DUE AS I READ FROM PEPSIN FROM THE STOMACHE. I HAVE ALWAYS KEPT MY WEIGHT LIGHT & IN GOOD SHAPE, BUT I AM 70 NOW SO GUESS ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. I BELIEVE IT WAS DUE TO SO MANY HEALTH ISSUES & STRESS IT PUT ON MY BODY? I KNOW THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE WITH THESE PROBLEMS. MAY SOMEONE HELP ME WITH THIS HIGH PH DIET, AS I HAVE LOOKED UP SO MUCH INFO ONLINE,BUT NOTHING COMPLETELY A LIST OF HIGH FOODS WITH A 7.5 OR ABOVE TO GET RID OF THIS TERRIBLE PROBLEM? I HAVE BEEN JUST EATING A TOAST WITH LITTLE BUTTER & LICORICE TEA FOR BREAKFAST EVERY MORNING. LUNCH IS LIKE RICE & A WHITE MEAT OR A GREEN BEAN BROTH. SMALL PORTIONS FOR SURE. AND SUPPER HAVE ANOTHER SOMETHING LIGHT LIKE TOAST WHEAT BREAD & BUTTER, TEA, SOME ALMOND NUTS. & THAT'S IT? I HAVE BEEN AWAKENING LATELY WITH NOT MUCH DISCOMFORT IN THE AM, SOMETIMES ALMOST UNTIL EVENING WHEN I EAT SUPPER & THEN IT STARTS IN UNTIL I FALL ASLEEP. THEN START ALL OVER NEXT DAY SO IF ANYONE HAS EXPERIENCED SOME HEALING OR CAN SHARE A DIET WITH HIGH PH FOOD IT WOULD BE SO GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK U ALL HERE & PRAY FOR YOUR HEALING SOON.

I meant to add that I’ve had this since November 2017. Started seeing GP in January and eeventually was given omeprazole which I also don’t think did any good. Having done lots of research all of the experts on this say the only way to treat this is to change your diet. That I’ve been doing for 28 days.

    cheers

    Hi folks

not the best couple of days. Seem to have gone backwards. Strain has returned even though I’m on the low acid diet. Very frustrating!!

Thats not good. Id stick with it though. Perhaps you’ve had to use the voice more than usual?

I felt mine was a little better earlier today , but then by 6pm was having the same old familiar dry and sore/burning pain. I think I just felt a bit better as it had gotten so bad over the weekend.

Had the broccoli soup earlier, I’ve got to say it was the first meal I haven’t finished, as i was making it i thought 2 teaspoons of salt seemed far too much and it was! Unbearably salty ...

Have you considered or seen a gastro specialist? If the diet doesn’t help im thinking there must be a way for a consultant to test whether the problem is acid reflux specifically. If it isn’t I don’t know what I would do, but it seems worth knowing whether it is that hurting the throat.

    Hi

seems to be up and down at the moment. Some days like yesterday very good with virtually no symptoms. Today seems ok so far however the previous couple of days I had moderate symptoms. I’m sure the diet has improved things. Looking back to 3 months ago the symptoms are nowhere near as bad. I’m just wondering if this ever does heal or do we have to live with this?

i am actually seeing an ENT specialist on Thursday therefore will report back afterwards.

    best wishes all

      Hi Everyone,

I was really thrilled to find this current string on LPR. Most chat forums I find on this subject is from a few years ago. I have the same/similar symptoms that everyone else on here has. I am CONSTANTLY clearing my throat and coughing and most of the time I feel like I can't breathe for some reason. I am fit and have eaten healthy for years. A physician diagnosed me with GERD and I was trying to combat that with taking apple cider vinegar and other natural remedies. Prilosec didn't seem to work for me but neither were the natural remedies. On Thurs, I got so fed up with this cough and the feeling of suffocation that I re-took to Google and came across LPR. When I read about it I knew that this was my problem, not GERD (very similar but different from LPR). I'm one who tends to eat large meals and late at night and so the past few days I've noticed a difference with eating smaller meals. Stopped the apple cider vinegar and replacing it with an alkaline diet based on what I find on the internet. There's some conflicting info out there on what is considered alkaline. One thing that concerns me is that a lot of websites talk about surgery to fix this. How much should that be something I consider? I'm guessing I should give the alkaline diet more than 3 days before I consider surgery but I don't want to have this for the rest of my life either. Tom, you mentioned in an earlier post that you've got some good info and charts that a nutritionist gave to you. I'd like that if you don't mind sharing. Is there anyway to private message on here? If so, I can send you my email address.

      Hi,

I would recommend buying the acid watchers diet by dr jonathan aviv. This is essentially a 6 week detox to try to heal your stomach and therefore by proxy your throat.

I have been on this diet for 9 days now. I was put on (i think) lanzeprazole for a month but saw no benefit. To be honest I haven’t seen any change with regards to my throat yet from the diet but I’m trying to stay optimistic.

Will probably be seeing a gastro specialist after the 28 days if things haven’t improved to see if they can confirm or deny acid as the cause.

I have had the problem on and off for about 6 months. I have been essentially mute for about 2/3 months as it deteriorated to the point at which talking is very painful for me.

I have seen a throat specialist about 2 months ago who said it was swollen but should go away on its own.

When you say cough and trouble breathing how do you mean? Is your throat continuously sore? Is it dry? Does it get worse with talking laughing or heavy breathing?

Thank you. I saw that title elsewhere in this post, please let me know if you have success with it.

My throat isn't so much sore as it feels like there's always something caught in it or that there is something blocking my airway. My voice is often strained so I try to limit my talking or take a rest if I jabber too long. There always seems to be mucous in my throat as well so I'm hoping the diet fixes that. I just started the Gaviscon Advance (tablets) and they seem to help but I'm still new and don't want to fall into the placebo effect so I want to give it more time before really making a judgement.

      Hi Peter

just adding to what Daniel said below. The Acid Watchers Diet is a good book and I’ve been following it now for 5 weeks. It’s tough but I do feel better overall. I’d be delighted to pass on the nutritional charts. Would need your email though. Not sure how you can share that privately?

      cheers
