I'm 26 and just had a marsupilation of bartholin cyst six days ago. I was not at all prepared for how it would look afterwards and have been in a lot of discomfort since!! I've also been somewhat concerned that the area is very bruised and feels hard, but perhaps after only a week this is normal whilst the area is healing. I would have hoped to have had a little more information from the hospital as this was limited and i guess i felt unprepared for afterward the op. Anyways, i'm hoping it heals nicely and that i have no more reoccurrences – fingers crossed. Furthermore i was told by my surgeon that Marsupilation is meant to be the best procedure – whether others agree would be interesting to know…

Secondly i have to say that although I think this website is useful to share information I guess as a new suffer myself it would have been nice to see more positive feedback and success stories because after reading all the comments I was quite horrified at the reoccurrences and left doubting whether I should have left well alone as opposed to having surgical treatment!!

I would be grateful to hear if anyone has any marsupilation success stories...

:D

    Hi there,

just wanted to share my story since I've been going through this for a while. I got the cyst in January 2013. It never was infected, never had any pain. I'm  originally from Toronto Canada. I moved to England in September 2013 to start my teaching career. I decided to have the surgery to remove the cyst in a hospital in London. I had the surgery by July 2014. The healing process was fine, the surgery and recovery was not painful at all. The doctor left a tiny rope inside the incision which I had to pull out the next day. I had sex with my boyfriend 4 weeks after surgery was not painful at all. But I immediately felt a tiny lump afterwards, which eventually grew back into another cyst.

Fast forward to September 2015 where I know live in Hamburg Germy. Same thing happened, cyst was there but no infection until this month. One weekend I began to feel sick, a combination of a cold and flu, and I noticed my cyst was beginning to become sore. By the end of the weekend I was feeling better but my cyst however became extremely painful, I was in tears and taken to the hospital. It broke in the middle of the night at the hospital but the doctors chcked me still and said the cyst was not completely gone. The surgeon cleared the cyst completely and left two stitches one either side of the opening to help continue to release fluids. I had a check up a week later and the doctor said it looked great. 4 weeks later I noticed the dissolvable stitches were still there, and silly enough my boyfriend and I decided to try sex with some lubricant, I started to become afraid and I was so tight he could not even go all the way. However the next day I began to feel sick and the area where I did the surgery began to hurt. I immediately went to a gynaecologist the next evening. He explained to me that cyst are reoccurring because there are thousands of glands that produce secretion in that area, and if the glands that are infected are removed COMPLETELY the cyst will always come back, he had a look and pulled out the stitch that had been there after 4 weeks, he said dissolvable stitches are supposed to be gone quite quickly, however this stitch was quite long so it remained and was probably why I was in pain down there. He said my surgery was done extremely well, as the surgeon completely removed the cyst and cleaned the area, and my cyst will probably never come back and I need to give my self two more weeks at the most to completely heal. So today, a day after that doctor appointment I'm actually feeling better, no inflammation, I'm taking sitz baths and I'm feelings confident, the bottom line is to make sure you get a surgeon who knows what they're doing and will comepletly clear the cyst and leave IT open with stitches,

    Hi all

Would really love some feedback note you are mostly a few months to a year down the line...

I had a bc which accessed 5 times in 4 months. I had the marsupialization done on New Years eve (yay) so am now 3 weeks post-op. Whilst the area has become more comfortable, there is still a hard lump (pea sized, maybe a little bigger) with an occasional pus-ey ooze (tmi!). I think the fact I can still see quite a big, deep hole is worrying me, will it ever close? The surgeon tried to remove the gland during the op, but said it had gone to deep to reach, will it ever stop oozing given the gland is still there? (All the swabs taken didn't grow anything )... I am genuinely loosing the will with it all :-(

Would love to hear how you all got on....

I'm sorry to hear you are having such a problem, trust me I understand the inconvenience, I had mine thanksgiving/Christmas, I had a drain tube ballon type thing there for a month. It was horribly uncomfortable, and I felt the doctor overfilled the ballon with the saline, and the first day it was so painful I cried...ALOT. BUT it's absolutely important they get the "sac" "seed" "bag" "home of the vaginal breaker" whatever they like to call it, I'm over a year since I've had it done and haven't had a single problem since the "balloon" was removed (by me..at work...in the bathroom) lol but it was ok'd by my doctor to do so, because the void or "hole where the BC" was healing causing the balloon to press on the inscsion, causing horrible burning and felt like it was tearing the small inscsion where the tube was, so my doc said CAREFULLY, SNIP THE TIP, and it should come right out. And even tho that month was uncomfortable only the first couple days I hated life, and I had pain meds (good ones) that helped, I wouldn't have changed a single thing about the procedure or process, one bit!

well maybe about 7less doctors looking at the vagayjay, but I didn't care at the time. They simply numbed the site and made a small  inscsion and pressed it empty I guess you'd say and then made certain the seed as I called it,was out, then flushed it out with saline solution to clean it out, cleaned it up, no sticches were needed, the balloon or aka drain tube is also EXTREMELY important because otherwise you will not heal properly and it appears you are running into this with the multiple reoccurrences sad

Mine was done right in the OBGYN office with just the local, they then inserted that balloon filled it, to take the place of the stuff that was inside the cyst as that hole slowly was closing on the inside it pushed saline from the balloon and like previously stated, your body will know when it's time to have it removed because a good amount of pressure is on the inscsion, now also once the balloon comes out...a must must is to gently massage the area several times daily which encourages additional healing and allows any residual fluid, blood, puss to extract out....then finally a water bottle of warm water, squirt it right on that location and again massage this while squirting the warm water.....

i had just small amounts of yuck coming out of it for about a month I would say, I worn thin panty liners and just keep it super clean...no soaps, or gentle soap you'd use on babies.

But you shouldn't feel any bump in there, nothing at all, if you don't have tubing or balloon inside , then that tells me they didn't get it all and the percentage of returning is pretty high, I hate to say that, but I'm being honest and want to help in any advise or possible way I can. But I think , if you haven't already done so, go to an actual women's health center that has OBGYN services that would be able to do it correct. Good luck sweetheart!

Thanks for your reply...I'm now 6 weeks post-op and most of the swelling has gone but the area still oozes which I'm not happy about...I went on a week of anti-biotics after the op, then another two weeks worth which I finished today. Going back to my consultant tomorrow so hopefully she will shed light on where to go from here. I didn't have the cathether/balloon (which, after reading other peoples stories, I'm rather glad about!) but yes - she couldn't reach the base of the gland, so all the while there's any left, I think I'm just going to have issues sad

    Hi all,

I just had an awful bartholin cyst that was probably the most painful thing I will ever experience. Couldn't bend over to put socks on, could hardly walk, no position was comfortable.

I went to the gyno for an emergency drainage and after consulting another physician the decision was made to do a marsup in the operating room under general anesthtesia the following day. Doing it with local anesthetic would be far too painful and my cyst was enormous. I was given a painkiller and had the surgey the next day. I woke up almost pain free; even after the drugs all wore off I felt so so so much better! Today is day 3 after the surgery, I'm having almost no issues aside from slight bleeding which they said to expect. I was told NO sitz baths after the surgery, only showers to rinse the area and ice packs. So far the swelling has gone down so much. It's like night and day. I HIGHLY recommend this proceedure, but have it done with someone who knows what they are doing. My gyno said the recurrance rate for his pateints is very very low, after a marsup it hardly ever comes back!

Hi, I am scheduled to have a murpulazation done on Tuesday, and I have the option of in office under local or in hospital under general, any thoughts on whether the office is a bad idea? Would really appreciate any feedback you can provide. Thank you.

Hi, how did it go and what did you opt for? (hopefully a general?!) I am 6 weeks post-marsupalisation and still not quite sorted but due to see the consultant tomorrow, so hopefully she will have a plan B...hope you're comfy and that it works for you x

I decided on general and so they rescheduled me for tomorrow, friday. I'm scared to death to tell you the truth. Hope you are feeling better.

All the best!! Going under is a good option and while it's initially uncomfortable when you wake up, once you get on top of the pain relief, it's fine honestly x

Update: now 4 weeks post op. the incision has completely healed! I had sex for the first time last night and experienced no pain at all, felt great for me (just some soreness afterwards because it has been so long and I wasn't used to his size lol).

Everything is functioning normally, I don't need to use lube. No more swelling, just a little hard bump of scar tissue where the marsupualization was done but that is to be expected and it's fading.

      Keep your chin up ladies!!!

Sounds like your treatment was a success! I'm 8 weeks post-op and can still see a (little but significant) hole where they 'marsupialised', also still have slight discharge from it but then I did have a very persistent infection even after 9 courses of antibiotics.. Really hoping it closes eventually 😑 Glad you've had such positive results (in more ways than one!)
