I'm 26 and just had a marsupilation of bartholin cyst six days ago. I was not at all prepared for how it would look afterwards and have been in a lot of discomfort since!! I've also been somewhat concerned that the area is very bruised and feels hard, but perhaps after only a week this is normal whilst the area is healing. I would have hoped to have had a little more information from the hospital as this was limited and i guess i felt unprepared for afterward the op. Anyways, i'm hoping it heals nicely and that i have no more reoccurrences – fingers crossed. Furthermore i was told by my surgeon that Marsupilation is meant to be the best procedure – whether others agree would be interesting to know…

Secondly i have to say that although I think this website is useful to share information I guess as a new suffer myself it would have been nice to see more positive feedback and success stories because after reading all the comments I was quite horrified at the reoccurrences and left doubting whether I should have left well alone as opposed to having surgical treatment!!

I would be grateful to hear if anyone has any marsupilation success stories...

:D

    Hello,

I had a very positive experience with marsupialization in 2002 and have just now done my second one for the other side.

Highly recommend this procedure as it is the only known way to solve the problem for good.

I'm excited to heal from #2 and FINALLY have a cyst free, lump free vagina - lol - but seriously. These things are such an embarrassing nuisance.

Just make sure it's with a surgeon who has done it 1000 times. My surgeon is amazing.

No other advise really other than just do it!

    Good luck!

Ladies, there are positive and negative to any situation. Now that I've said that. My experience with bartholin cyst was great 9 years ago. I was pregnant when I got it but I didn't know it was there yet, because it had not swelled. Thankfully I had a c-section or it could have ruptured during giving birth and I was told the infection could have got in my sons eyes and possibly hurt his vision. I had a procedure in the office and had relief right away and didn't have any problems for 9 years. Then it came back and it didn't just come back it has been a terrifying experience this time around. I first had the outpatient surgery which was so painful land to much pressure. It did not work. A week later I was in the operating room getting the Marcipulation. I was and am still very good at doing sids baths and taking antibiotics so I believe that's why it never swelled up like it did in the beginning. I was told I didn't need pain medicane and I would feel better in a couple days. I have never been in so much pain, it has been a week and I am still feeling shooting pains up my vulva and severe cramping. I don't know what to do. I'm hoping someone on here can be honest about the discomfort and the agony and give me advice. This being said I went 9 years with a successful procedure, so that's positive, but the way I see it I don't appreciate the comments that seem to make fun of the feedback. It's not being negative, It's being REAL! This is a very stressful and painful issue for women and it's ok to express that. If anyone has advice for me that could help me that would be amazing and for those of you that had such a positive experience remember so did I for 9 years and it's not fun anymore.

I had masupialization three days ago. It was a twenty minutes op under general anesthesia

Since the first minutes after surgery i had no problem at all. No pain, no swelling, no blood. I could do anything since first hours after the op only a little discomfort due to the gayze. They put gauze inside the incision which i was supposed to change everyday for the next ten days but from today (third day) that i visited the hospital to change my gauze they saw it was almost healed with no bleeding and i didn't need the gauze (and they practically couldn't put any gauze in the incision) they only advised me to continue my antibiotics for five more days and wash the area with simple soap and lukewarm water. I don't feel any pain at all, not even when i use the bathroom, i have very little discharge of brown mucus but nothing else. If the cyst won't show up again, then i can assure you that this operation is a super success in my case.

I am currently dealing with my fifth cyst. Tomorrow I am headed to a gyno to hopefully have it marsupialized. I've been dealing with these since I was 17 (22 now) and just wanted to put a word of advice out there for anyone struggling with this. Do not have it lanced!!! Don't go to a GP and go straight to a gyno. My first three I had lanced by my GP. After doing some research I found a study from AUS which said lancing has a 30% recurrence rate while word catheters and marsups are only about 3% (although from what I've read from other patients, word catheters rarely seemed to be correctly placed resulting in reinfection, and I'd choose marsup instead). Lancing the cyst is also bad as it builds up scar tissue, meaning if you ever have the cyst or gland removed there will be more they have to cut away, which will make recovery worse.

I'm hoping my marsup goes well and there won't be need for further surgery! This is one of those issues I wish there was more information and hope to one day research myself so women will be able to make informed decisions!

After my gynecologist did an examination and found out how many I had had (this was my first visit with her) she suggested a procedure called bartholin's gland excision. Essentially, instead of just being drained in one way or another, like nearly all other procedures, they remove the sack. My doctor said this does much more to ensure it will not return as it gets rids of all of the cyst tissue.

Anyway, I could not recommend this procedure highly enough! I felt great almost immediately after surgery, and was back to work in only a few days. It's been roughly two or three months now and intercourse can at first be slightly uncomfortable where the incision was but that is the only after effect I've experienced. Definitely something I would recommend looking into!

Did you feel a difference in lubrication after you got the gland removed? And do you know if it affects conception?

      Thanks

I was 17yrs old when I had a marsupilation of bartholin cyst. Now I'am 22 yes old and it keeps coming back for almost 3years now. Everytime I come back to my doctors they keep on saying that there's no point undergoing another surgery because it will be like just draining it all over again then It will come back eventually. this is really hard for me, so painful and most of the time it happens every month. I even have to force myself going to school back when I was still a student even up to now as a working woman it pains me physically and emotionally because very few people can understand this situation and I still have to bare this pain. I'm very thankful for my family and my boyfriend since highschool for always being there for me and doing the best they can to help me get through this pain everytime.

    has anyone experienced the same thing? please enlighten me. As a I am experiencing this pain AGAIN right now. ='{

      Hi,

Like Nicole said, many women that have had the marsupialization done, they cyst still comes back. For both procedures you will have a surgery with total anesthesia and a recovery. Rather just go through the removal of the gland once and for all than go through many surgeries throughout your life. I had pain a week post op and from there it kept getting better with time.
