I'm just wondering... Glandular Fever Symptoms
Posted , 25 users are following.
I am (usually) a fit 29 yr old woman who is very active.
I have been suffering from GF since April and only had blood tests done about a week ago as I broke down to my Dr and said I was sick of being sick as its now July. I had a Full Blood Count, EBV and STD & I got my results back. Everything was fine except for 1 - the EBV. This is the worst I've ever felt, hence why I wanted to be tested for every thing.
My symptoms include:
Sore throat
Tight neck
Pain behind ears
Overwhelming and extreme tiredness.
Headaches
On an off I get these symptoms:
Pins and Needles in arms hands and feet.
Sore neck.
Sore back between shoulder pains.
Aching hips.
Now I am having chest pain, is this common?
I haven't read anything about chest, back or aching hips and I am hoping I'm not suffering from anything else?
Any more advice from anyone or if any one has different like me can you please respond so I can set my mind at ease and stop thinking I have something else more serious? It will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Hi All,
I really wish western medicine would recognize the severity of this virus. November will be two years recovering from ebv cmv. I still have weak adrenals, anxiety has now turned to more uneasy feeling at times. I still crash daily but not as hard. I'm off dairy, gluten, eggs and sugar. Feeling better overall but not myself yet. Brain fog still there daily to some degree. Still have bouts of insomnia. What a journey.

I am 21 months post ebv diagnosis. I am still fatigued on a daily basis and not able to work. May I ask, what you mean by weak adrenals? How do you know? Have you been to an endocrinologist? My primary card physician has sent me to an Infectious Disease Specialist, neurologist, and my Gynecologist-- the only thing these doctors say is "oh, you must have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Now my doctor want me to go to an endocrinologist. I am interested your journey.

Hi There,
I went to a functional med md who is both an md and a naturpath. He tested my adrenals through a saliva test. Many people with ebv have adrenal issues because it is so difficult for our bodies to fight. His philosophy was treat the gut, adrenals and it will reset your immune system. I had a food allergy test...got off of those i was reacting to . No eggs, processed foods, dairy. Sugar or gluten. Slow process. I also had my hormones checked as weak adrenals don't produce much progesterone nor testosterone. Sometimes low doses of those bioidenticle replacement can rest adrenals so they can heal. I'm back to work full time. Still have fatigue worse somedays than others but I'm much better.

Once that subsided I start having bad chills and cold sweats. I am now dealing with muscle twitching, neck pain, some back pain and EXTREME anxiety . Any feedback will help. Thanks

That sounds like mono, it gives you a bunch of strange symptoms and the anxiety is horrible especially in the beginning, I would feel so weak and shaky. Rest as much as possible and know that all the feelings with get better with time.

Thanks Mono too,
Thanks for the reply, how long did your symptoms last ? Also how do you know when you don't have the active virus anymore ( I know the virus stays in your System right?)
Also how did you best deal with your anxiety ? Thanks again.

I first got sick late last October, I am 55 and I think it lasts longer if you are older, I got it from my teenage granddaughter, her sister got it and my daughter has it also.
The worst symptoms lasted about 6.5 months, they tested me for Epstein Barr virus after my mono spot was clear and it was going away, the antibody titers were high so going into recovery phase basically. I had a relapse in July(not as bad as the first time but discouraging) Your doctor will probably retest you at some point if the mono spot is negative have them do the Epstein Barr test, it gives you an idea of where you are in the recovery process.
Anxiety is a hard one it is related to the virus for sure, even the teenage granddaughters had it, the doctor first thought it was anxiety but it cleared with her as soon as she started feeling better, I noticed the same.
It is best to distract yourself if you can books, music, internet, guided meditation, TV , movies, boxed sets. Knowing that the virus is doing this to you helps ease your mind. Rest is the best thing you can do for the virus, my doctor recommended COQ10, vitamin C and B vitamin complex.
How long have you been feeling ill?

Hey Mono too,
I'm a 23 year old male it's nice to talk to someone who understands, question did you have symptoms of muscle jitters, neck and back pain? It all started around July 10 this year. Also how long did it take for your daughter and Granddaughters to heal. Also what do you mean by mono spots? Is the EBV test a separate test from the mono spot test? And how long does it take for those test to come back? (Im still waiting for one test that's why)

Yes to all the symptoms above. My granddaughter was sick last summer and it lasted about four months and she was tired until December last year. Granddaughter 2 was sick about four months and just found out she had Epstein Barr, she is back to work and school. My daughter worked through the whole virus and is still ill, I am feeling better, You are young so this works in your favor, but rest as much as possible.
Epstein Barr virus can cause mono, the test for mono is called mono spot, I was positive for that so I had mono and Epstein Barr, the test for Epstein Barr is a separate test and will show if you are in recovery phase or active phase in addition it will show the antibodies to the virus. My mono spot was same day and Epstein Barr about 10 days.

So I'm guessing it takes about a week, what do you recommend me say or do to people that don't understand the pain that I am dealing with?

That's a tough one because unless you've had it you cannot understand what this virus is capable of. I am glad I had it so I can understand what my daughter and granddaughter are going through.
?I would let them know that it is a vicious virus and the recovery is much longer than the six to eight weeks that is usually found online, personally I think the virus has probably become stronger over time or it is the immune response causing more inflammation in some people. You will feel better though and one day you will notice that you have moments of feeling normal this comes and goes for a long time and you will have good days and bad days, the symptoms will then start to lighten and eventually it goes away. You should read the older posts to get an idea of the process, Craig has lots of good advice, he has fully recovered and most of us are in various stages of recovery.

Hey Daeon
I'm so sorry to hear that you have GF.
It's a long and slow process to recovery and everyone is different in their recovery process which I've learnt along my journey. And people who have never had GF just don't get it either. As mentioned in my first post I've had GF since April 2016.
I am now what I refer to as the token "sleepy girl" as although I have gotten a lot better and that took a good 12 months I still suffer extreme tiredness. It's actually ridiculous. I've also noticed that I feel so much better after I cut dairy and sugar from my diet. I don't drink as much alcohol either anymore.
Anxiety is a big one for me too I didn't really start suffering from it till around September and was actually medicated for it for about 2 months. I think I've always had anxiety in me but GF brought it out. No to try an combat it I just take some time out to myself every now and then and just try and positive. Exercise helps me with this but I only still manage to go to the gym 2 days a week compared to the 4 days I used to do before I got this.
I hope this post helps and just remember you are not alone!
