My right ear is thumping on and off...sounds like thunder or heavy drums.

Can't sleep,cant concentrate and I'm getting on everyone's nerves.

The doctor at the hospital emergency said I got trapped fluid behind the drum. The next day it went to town with drumming.....i want to end my life,I can't take it anymore!

Hello tasha,  It's unlikely that the Citrizine is affecting your balance and more probably due to your anxiety causing it. It's a problem that will take it's time to go.  Even going to a ENT consultant, he is unlikely to know the cause, a I've been suffering, like many others on the forum for many years.  Continue with the Citrizine and you must try and get yourself some Flixonze steroid nasal spray.  Your problem could be caused by allergies.  What happens to people in your situation when something urgent is wrong with them but you can't afford to see a specialist....don't you have Insurance ?  When you say you're waking up to thumping.  Do you think that your ears are so blocked that you can actually hear your heart beating.  I've had that experience.  You sound very clogged up.  In my experience, when my ears crackle, it obviously means mucus is present and I'm able to pop them.  However, when really clogged it's rare you can do that.  Again my only answer to you for a quick resolution to your problem, is Prdnisolone.  I keep saying this to most people on the forum, some are unable to use it through other health issues, but those that can I guarantee a very quick result and possibly a permanent one too.  If only you could afford to see a doctor.

      Kind regard

I'm not sure the off balance is due to the medication. I also feel off balance and dizzy. I take fluticasone. I also experience good days and bad days. At times I notice an improvement after taking the fluticasone but at times I also notice no improvement instead I get worse. I'm not a doctor but I'm thinking the off balance is due to the problem.

Hi Tasha, I'm very sorry your ear is bothering you. I personally know exactly what you are going through as the same thing is happening to me. My problem began in march. I've gone to the doctor 7 times already for this issue. The first three times I went to doctors I had an ear infection that was not clearing up. They prescribed me ear drops that didn't work and the second time they prescribed me amoxicillin. My ear problem still had not resolved so I went back. This time I was told I had white in my ear. and the doctor finally referred me to an ent doctor (3rd doctor). The 4th docter(ent) told me I had eustacian tube dysfunction. So he prescribed me fluticasone( I believe generic for Flonase). He said to take it for a month and if it didn't work to come back. It didn't work so I went back but continued to take the fluticasone. I saw a different doctor within the office( 5th doctor now). He said that he thought it was something to do with my jaw and said it was tmj dysfunction. He then told me to go to the dentist. After searching I found a dentist that specializes in tmj and sleep apnea. He examed my mouth and my jaw and neck area he said he didn't believe it was tmj but try using a mouth guard for two weeks and if it doesn't resolve then to come back and he could get a new set of X-rays. In the mean time I had an appt with the 4the doctor (ent). He told me he believed it was eustacian tube disfunction and the other doctor believed it was tmj dysfunction, so a combination of both. Therefore, they aren't sure what exactly it is, one says one thing, another says another thing. I asked if there was any test to determine if this condition is eustacian tube dysfunction but he said no. He did say to go off the fluticasone for a month and see if the problem goes away and if not to go back and they may have to put tubes in my ears.  I've noticed most of my symptoms occur less often, some have even stoppped. However some have gotten worse. Days I feel good and days I feel awful. I just thought I would let you know you aren't alone! I am going through the same thing you are and it is very awful and at times debilitating. I am reading some of your comments and others reply. One person has had it on and off. I wonder if tubes will help? Some people I've talked to said do not get tube some say yes to it. One person said they got tubes and haven't had problems since. I'm unsure of what to do at this point if it's not tmj. I sort of feel the other doctors (ent) are giving me the run around. I am not willing to let my symptoms get really bad as they were before. Maybe I should go to another doctor in my area? However, this has cost a lot of money. At this point I am much like you, desperate for a cure and effective treatment. I wonder if you may have a problem with your jaw, tmj maybe? I'm unsure of why my symptoms at times feels like they have improved slightly? There are days when I am very well and there are days I am miserable. The doctor did say that it takes a month for the fluticasone to start to kick in. However during this time I also had the mouth guard. So I'm unsure of which helped me with symptoms.

Hello Jen,  Don't you think if this problem was related to TMJ that's what everyone on this Forum would have too.  I still think most of it is caused by Allergic Rhinitis and other allergies and sinusitis in my case.  Years ago both of my ears would completely block, nowadays it's just my left that causes all the problems.  The prednisolone steriod tablets that have given me relief for almost 4 months are now leaving my system and syptoms have returned.  Had it been TMJ I don't think these tablets would have helped.  My ears have been clear for 4 months, no post nasal drip, all the inflammation gone (that swells the eustachian tubes) and I have felt wonderful.  Sadly these tablets cannot be taken indefinitely unless illness is life threatening.  However, they are certainly worth trying for eustachian tube dyfunction....they work for me !!  This dibilitating issue of blocked ears should not be allowed to go on for years and years without some relief given.  I've been getting the occasional blocked ear, but gently managed to pop the tube open again and it's stayed open, thank goodness.  My personal regeme is Citrizine every morning, and Flixonase morning and night, without fail.  I've read a paper recently on the internet about peole suffering allergies should take a daily supplement of LACTOBACILLUS GASSERI a very good probiotic.....we need a good healthy gut bacteria for our immune systems to work properly.  I will start to use these soon.

Good luck with whichever treatment you go for.  But to get quick relief within 4 days, just try Prednisolone to get rid of all the inflammation and unblock your ears.

Steroids are used for inflammation. If you have TMJ and the joints are Inflamed then steroids are a standard treatment. So they are used for inflammation in the tubes, inflammation from sinusitis and TMJ too.

I talked to the ENT Wednesday about tubes and the balloon dilation procedure If the TMJ treatment doesn't work. He said about 50% of the people that get tubes love them, 25% said there was no change and the other 25% want them out asap. He also said the tubes help with pressure but so little for the popping and cracking.

We also discussed balloon dilation of the turbinate. My CT scan showed only a slight narrowing. He said it might not help at all but it could relieve a little pressure in the sinuses with relieves pressure in the ear.

Did they custom make a bite splint? I wear mine 24/7 unless eating or needing to speak to someone in public. I am also getting physical therapy, dry needling and intraoral massage as well as doing 3 jaw exercises a few times a day.

My ears have been pretty good this week. Hoping it continues! They still have their moments but overall they are better.

Hi Tasha, you are definitely not the only one! The doctors make me feel crazy. I feel they are unsure of what exactly is wrong with me. One doc assumes It's tmj the other believes it eustacian tube dysfunction. The third doctor I saw suggested to use allergy medication. Maybe it may help you?  I get that flush feeling in the ear. That is when the off balance/dizziness occurs as well.

I haven't heard back from the doctor to confirm tmj or not. However, I strongly believe I do not have tmj. Do your ears drain out liquid? Mine do not, maybe my eustacian tubes are blocked? I'm unsure if my problem is caused by allergies. I can say I've never had allergies bother me in the past. I believe the probiotic you are talking about is sold in capsules that do not have to be refrigerated. Next time I go to the doctor I will mention the prednisolone. Thank you.

You are welcome Jenn,  having suffered this problem for so many years, Prednisolone is the only thing that unblocks my ears and drys up all the fluid and inflammation.  You may only need to use them the once, but you will need a reducing 20 day course with you ears having been blocked for so long.  Do not waste your time if he offers you 5 or 6 days course where you take the tablets daily, but maybe 6 tablets all at once, then the same the next day until they are finished.  My 20 day course is usualy 8 tablets on the first day, then gradually reducing.  Your doctor will tell you the correct amount for yourself.

I do hope you get sort soon

Has the doctor told you that you have fluid trapped in your ears. Mine feels wet and cold inside but there is never any fluid. It just feels like it most likely due to trapped air in the middle

      Ear.

I assumed I didn't have TMJ because I can open my mouth with no pain and have no jaw pain. The specialist could tell that I did have it due to measurements and checking trigger points. TMJ is hard to diagnose because it causes so many other symptoms that seem unrelated. It also causes referred pain. My therapist will work on one area and I will get a pain in another place on my body. Sometimes the opposite side! I read once that the average person sees close to 7 specialists while trying to figure out the problem before a TMJ diagnosis.

You might not have it. I just know my symptoms didn't lead me to ever consider I had it because they weren't jaw related.

I think my ears are due to a little allergies and a lot of TMJ but time will tell. I just hope not much more time passes!

Hi ann1013, I do not remember them telling me I had fluid or air in my ear. I'm going to assume I have fluid because one ent doctor told me about tubes. They were suppose to do some test (tube down my nose to look at my ear) but the two ent doctors have different opinions about what exactly is wrong with me, one believes I have tmj the other eustacian tube dysfunction. Maybe this test would have determined whether I had fluid or air not sure? I got the results from my X-rays, the dentist I've been seeing to determine if I have tmj said I do not have Tmj. He did measurements and checked trigger points etc but nothing indicated I had Tmj.

Hello again tasha,  I don't believe for one moment that you're the only one in Dallas who is suffering with Eustachian Tube Dysfunction.  Tell whatever doctor you see to read all of these posts on this Forum to see for himself how many of us suffer from it.  It's ridiculous that they cannot help you.  Accupuncture is a very expensive thing to have to try and personally, I don't think it'll work.  I've tried everything and Reflexology too....nothing works.

Your ears sound extremely blocked and no one can suffer that forever.  Please read my original messages again and try and get diagnosed properly with ETD

Tasha, have you tried using ear buds to listen to music or audiobooks when you are having the ear noises?  My husband has a loud ringing in his ears from a bomb blast. He says the headphones help.

Whem my ears were at their worst pressure wise I wore a fleece ear wrap for winter.  The pressure against the ears made the pressure inside feel better for reason.

A hot shower when my ears are at their worst will usually fix them for a while.  Whem you are tense everything escalates.  A hot shower relaxes your muscles and sometimes your ears.
