Implant & Weight Gain.. Help???

Posted , 55 users are following.

I'm 24 and I am on my second Contraseptive Implant the first implant i had for 3 years never really caused any trouble I was stilll energetic,I manintianed a healthy weight and my mood swings were managebale... until the last few months, i expected this though as the implant was due to be renewed.

So I thought getting the implant for a second time would be a piece of cake (mmmm cake!)....Boy was I wrong!!!!!!

I had my second implant inserted 4 1/2 months ago and since then I have gained 24lb (10.8KG) no matter how much exercise or healthy eating i do the weight will not shift! I am constantly tired, my skin in spotty and dry, My sex drive...pfffft! what sex drive?? my hair is thining, my mood swings are ridiculous and because of this i hate myself.

I find it astonishing that such a small thing can make such an impact on my life.

I have been to the doctors and had a full MOT everything else internally is fine (apart from my weight) so my GP & I have both agreed that it is best that the impant be removed as it's the only possible cause of all of this..

How long will it take to get back to normal & lose weight once the implant is removed?

Has anyone else suffered with these side effects?

Will this weight ever go away (of course i will work hard)?

Am I a crazy chick?

Thanks in advance for any advice xxx

    Hi all.

I have had my implant out for just over a month now and I have lost 10 pounds and I feel so much better having it out. I have to say the best decision I made having this removed. I went to our local family planning clinic rather than the doctors as the doctors are more reluctant to remove them.

I've had my implanon for about 7 months now. During the first two months I was emotional as hell and bled for about a month straight. About two months ago I started having horrible mood swings! LITERALLY!!! One minute I'm feeling great the next minute I'm the biggest b****!!! So annoying. On top of all this I've gained 16 pounds since June!!! I have an appointment to have it removed Monday October 3rd. I can't wait because at the moment I'm always hungry and it's annoying!

Hey! So just wanted to add my own personal experience. I had my first implant for 3 years... I piled on weight - size 10 to a size 16. I was never hungry but just wanted to eat constantly, moody, depressed, spotty everything. But I decided to try it again. I've currently got my 2nd implant in and I'm ringing tomorrow to enquire about getting this out and never getting it back again.

I admit, I did lose a few stone and I'm currently in a size 12-14 but for the past year I've not budged anymore weight, I seem to be putting it back on despite being active and eating well, it's loke my body is storing it! Bleeding constantly, mood swings, no sex drive, depression AGAIN. I'm 21 years old and never have I felt this insecure. If anyone is interested I'll keep you All posted on how things go. But I'd never reccomend this contraception to anyone!

    Hey guys,

I have had the implant for two years and despite working out and eating healthy I still managed to gain so much weight. I had no idea why so I started looking at things that have changed in my life since. I read through other articles and this group and I am happy to say that I had my implant removed yesterday. I can't wait to loose the weight. I will be back with feedback.

    Thanks for the support guys.

    Hi Everyone,

I need some advise? I have been debating getting my implant removed for months now, the only thing holding me back is that I'm travelling around and I don't get a period which is so ideal.

The downside is the weight gain. I have always been very fit go to the gym 4 times a week and eat exstremely healthy.

Since getting the implant my weight has been all over the place, the worst part is that I have gained over a stone and a half. For someone who has always been happy with my figure through the hard work I put in and slowly seeing it disappear! It is seriously depressing.

I have been eating 1300 calories a day and work in an active job and work out 3 times a week.

I don't understand what's happening as I'm gaining weight instead of losing it. I can't reduce my intake anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions

The only reason I haven't had it out yet is because I'm travelling through Australia, NZ and Asia and not having a period is great but I mentally can't deal with gaining more and more weight.

I leave Australia in 10 days so I wonder what your advise is?

      Hey charlotte,

I had the implant in for 11 months and gained just over 3 stones dispite working out most days. I was so confused i didnt know what to do until i found this chat and it all clicked in my head so i got it removed last week and already lost 6 pounds during the christmas period so that pretty great smile. I advise you get it removed and try something with a low dosage or whatever the doctors suggest but its all trail and error. Wish you all the best of luck and hope this helped.

      Girls I need help!!

I'm going on the implanon in the next 3 days, all i have seen on this website is negativity surrounding the implanon I'm becoming extremely apprehensive, I cannot deal with weight gain and all anyone seems to be talking about here is weight gain while on it, doctor says it's not proven to be matched with it but I don't know, what do you's think? I really can't deal with weight gain at all

Finally, got my answer! I wish I came across this thread awhile back. Same problem on Implanon it was awesome, no period, it was great except the occasional heavy night sweats.  So after the three years started on the next implant, but the name changed to nexplanon.  Started gaining weight (currently sitting at a 40lb weight gain over the course of 1 year).  Taken blood test to check thyroid and other test to check any and everything, my mood became terrible and was placed on three types of antidepressants (is hereditary, but my regular ways of dealing with it, yoga, quiet time, etc... not working).  All blood work came back great.  I was a long time athlete so I knew what to eat, watched caloric intake (documented) even started back on my high intensity workouts (Shaun T insanity and T-25) with very little change.  After my doctor tried placing me on weight loss medication not covered by my insurance, I turned to my OB who immediately said it was most likely my implant and should probably take it out and look to other forms of birth control.  I get mine taken out tomorrow 3-29-2017, hopefully this makes the difference.

Hi! I just wanted to ask you, did you lose weight after removing the implant?

I have also tried t25 and have not even lost a pound. My doctor keeps trying to convince me that it must be my lifestyle and not the implant.

Hiya just wondering if you've had any weight loss yet? This is my second implant and I've had it in almost 2 years and I've gained 2 1/2 stone since having it placed September 2015 and nothing works to loose it.. Healthy diet, exercise starving myself (which I know is not the answer) but I've gone from a size 8/10 9stone being 5f6in to now almost 12st wearing size 12/14 and my diet is no different to what it was years ago.. Zara smile

I am on my second implant and before i ever got the implant i was a size 8/10 and around 9 stone. now 2 implants later I am over 12st and a size 12 in most clothes. Im just wondering did you ever get your implant out and if so did your weight go down? Im booked in for the 22nd march to get my impant out and cannot wait!! Thank you. Corrie x
