Irritating , annoying comments about chronic pain .

Don’t you hate it when the able-bodied try to encourage you with cliches that no longer apply to chronic pain patients?

The one that irritates me most is, “If you can dream it, you can do it!”. or, "the power of positive thinking" ... Here's one of my favorites

just keep moving and be "Mindful" of your tolerances.

It makes me want to reply, “Really? I’m dreaming that you would feel my pain”.rolleyes

What at are some of the irritating response you receive from those who do not suffer from chronic pain? And what do you tell them?

I love your reply! Very recently a prominent specialist told me it was all in my state of mind. He listed people he knew 'with real pain', then listed their professional accomplishments. I was horrified. He had no clue! I acknowledged his attempt to help and moved on. With these unhelpful people, I've come to learn that further conversation is a complete waste of my energy!

      Hi CtKathleen,

WELCOME  to our every day check in thread. I have been told the same.&  after many years searching, one doc finally found the source of pain in a X-ray. A simple X-ray. Hip OA. 8 years and 10 docs later. I never gave up you should not either. Just move on to another doc.

I can totally relate to what you have been thru. Been there many times myself. It is so frustrating to deal with some of the doctors today. If they can't find the source of the pain then they should sent you a recommendation to another doc who could help you.

i am horrified that my surgeon who did my last hip replacement lied to me and looked me straight in the face and answered my question that there was no metal on metal parts in the hip prothesis. Well here I am 5 1/2 years late with metal on metal parts fretting cobalt and chromium into the tissue surrounding the implant and neck is broken heavy metal toxicity in my blood stream. Then he left the state. Now I'm set for revision next Jan.

I have a list list a mile long. I hope you have had your pain issues resolved. Let us know how your doing? Don't give up keep searching for a answer. No On my way! Knows your body better than you!

      Keep posting.

Sending many heeling blessings, laughter and hugs your way!

      Hopexxxx

Thank you for your kind words.  I'm sorry I just jumped in on your conversation.  I saw the initial post and answered.  I have a diagnosis (a few!), Ankylosing Spondylitis, Fibro, mixed with Depression, etc.  It's tough to find a rheumatologist who actually knows AS (tho I've met several who SAY they do!)

Pain will be here til I go...  some days are much better.  I'm looking into what others are doing for their chronic pain, hoping for some change.  I've exhausted the standard US approaches.  I hope to try DMARDS soon.  I have an appointment next Friday with a doctor who was recommended by a doctor I respect.  Wish me luck!

    Hi Gloria, Judith, and INDI,

Steroid injections are a total waste of time and a B, for me when the numbing medication wears off that's mixed in with the injection all the pain returns.

I had them in my shoulders, hips, and knee and bottom of feet. I always made them freeze spray first to numb the needle injection site. I learned this trick the hard way after injection in bottom of feet. The first time had it in bottom of feet I said four letter words I didn't think I knew,  all the nurses came running in the dr exam room and said don't be embarrassed everybody does that. oh what a relief. DAH ! So rediculous the doc didn't have sence enough to numb the area first! Same in my hands.

Our insurance here has protocols before more expensive treatments can be used they start treatment at the bottom of the ins. list. Even while awaiting THR or shoulder screws surgery etc. or like meds you start with the less costly move up til one finally helps.

Sending  hope, love and laughter your way. 👍

    Hope xxxx

Yes indeed...no cortico steroid torture for me anymore....Guess what the specialist said while he was ramming the big needle in...."This is not painful it's all in your mind...fear," he said...I nearly leapt of the table and bashed him.....frown

Where do they find these jerks! I'm so sorry Gloria. It is the worse pain ever even when wakining fron THR and no pain meds the injection in crotch hip area was worse. I think a nerve was hit. I screamed in pain and was told to shut up!

I wanted to say that it should not hurt this bad as the nurse came in she asked if the tech had numbed the hip area first. I said no. She apologized for the him. These are not docs really but techs trained, I thinks this one was a intern unsupervised. It's a small town so now I drive 2 1/2 hours to a better hospital .

Many blessings for a pain free day and your so lucky to enjoy your fresh veggies! 🐾🐾🐾 Give Rotti dog a hug for me!

I have only had injections in my shoulder and it hurt, he hit a nerve and I was one armed for a week. Hey, did I tell you. 4 months ago got finalized with state for pain medication. Yesterday I got a letter from my doctor saying as of Feb. 1st they will no longer be treating anybody with chronic pain for pain management. I gotta start all over again!!! I swear if I think about it I'm gonna cry or explode. Not sure which though. wink

This is so sad for the many of us who suffer from chronic pain. In my state we cannot get pain meds unless after surgery or serious illness like cancer

I was in a wheel chair with bone 🍖 on bone hip joint while waiting three weeks for THR surgery and the pain clinic would not give me pain meds for 3 lousey weeks. It's crazy 😜 due to do many overdosing on illegal opiates. On top of that after I had THR  the manufacturer recalled the hip. My surgeon would not do a revision until she thought I was at risk of the THR joint failing. Well it did and I still can't get a RX for pain meds, it's easier to get marajuana than pain meds its legal here. Yeah ! Really 😜 crazy!

every injection I had never seemed to help some hurt so bad I said 4 letter words I didn't even know! It's just another way for insurance companies to make procedures in order to make more $$$.

      are you in NJ....

not your physician's fault...USA FDA has clamped down on narcotic prescriptions...no one will be permitted to purchase both a benzodiazepine and a narcotic...ask your physician for a referral to palliative care

Here I am butting in again...  What you said reminds me of the day my youngest daughter was born.  When I went into labor my auto-immune system attacked my sciatica and when her head came down it was unbelievably painful for about 15 hours.  They gave me all the medication they said I could have, I was still screaming.  Nurses came in throughout this time to tell me to shut up because my screaming was ruining the birthing experience for the other mothers!  Imagine!  No, I just randomly feel like screaming bloody murder for 15 hours on a regular basis!  Some people need to get a clue!

Hey Kathleen...wow...that reminds me of the night my youngest was born. I was struggling in labour for two days...and as it was my fourth I thought it would be easy.....ha..ha..Eventually she arrived and I was rushed somewhere to have an IV set up with blood as I was bleeding heavily. I was also told to shut up and as she was being born I was screaming and got slapped by the nurse. Two days later after 4 units of blood...I was allowed to see my daughter,,,she was 11 lb 2 ozs...and the biggest baby born natrurally in that hospital ever. The nurse was told to apologise to me....and I was then treated as a sort of celebrity...so was my baby.  I am sure that this was the start of my back problems......Admittedly this was a very long time ago...but things haven't changed much in my book...what happened to " duty of care"...sad
