It has been 9 months since my prostatectomy now what?

It has been 9 months since my prostatectomy and everything is fine except for sexual function. Cialis does not work at all and I have been able to get an erection with injections. I have had successful intercourse once and the rest of the times it was too painful to have sex. Please is there anyone out there with similar frustrations that could share with me what they have done to solve the problem.

Dear Mike
I'm on a well known UK cancer forum and it is generally considered that it is important to keep one's penis exercised and use of a pump is favourite.
Have you tried alternative tablets as what works for one person may not work for another.
Cheers Richard

I got very little info from my surgeon and I wish I had known about the pump sooner. It was about 6 months before I learned about the pump and another month before I tried one, but I am very happy with the results.
No erection yet, but the gain in size has been very nice to see.
I wish I could use it more often but I'll just use it when I can.

Don't rely on your surgeon for such guidance. Find a GP (Australia and UK) or PCP (US) that focuses on men's health. That is the person who can assist.

auntiebeanie,
I started TRIMIX injections on 4/19 and so far injected 19 times. I could not see the needle and thought won't be able to do that but I decided to give a try. From my experience it is not painful and it is not bad as I expected to be to stick needle in my own penis. TRIMIX gives me erection but can not expand my penis to its size. It looks pathetic. Loss of length is pronounced even more in erectile state.
But, I am trying. At 7 months post RP, I do not know if anything could be done to stretch it to pre op state.
At 52, I do not know how I would do if I wouldn't be in long relationship.
My wife is very supportive person but she makes me feel bad when she says:" Don't worry, I don't need it."
Still, I want to restore my sex function so badly.

You say that Cialis didn't work and viagra made your husband ill.
Was he on Cialis 5 mg daily?
If the dose of viagra made him I'll, did he consider a lower dose I initially and then raising the dose in time?
I use Cialis and would not give up meds to help with ED as they are easier to deal with compared to injections.

For the rest of day and night is always pulled/ hidden in my body and looks like second navel. When going to urinate, have to dig it out and it is only head so most of the time urinate in sitting position.
I had an idea about SE but not to this proportion. If I did, WOULD NEVER IN 100 YEARS DECIDED ON SURGERY.
TO LATE.

Sorry for my late response I used to have a notification via email that there was a response but now I guess it's not like that. Yes I had nerve sparing surgery. And the injections do work and in my opinion are not painful and it is worth what little pain there is for the result . It gets hard every time if injected properly.

I hear you. But please don't assume that any alternative to surgery comes without risk.
Some choose ADT in place of surgery thinking it will be only for a short time, and may find out that they will need to be on it for a lot longer.
And from what I hear, the side effects of ADT are worse than surgery.

Barney,
ADT affects libido not erections. Once you stop hormones, libido wiil return.
With ADT you loose some muscle mass, gain weight and grow man's bubs but you are not loosing penis length and girth.
Everybody agrees, SE of surgery are the hardest and hit you right away.
If my sexual function declines slowly over the years, I won't be affected in the same way as it is after surgery at my young age when I enjoyed sex more then when I was in my 30's having young kids, worked long hours and not have much of free time.

I suppose the key consideration of whether to take ADT is the expected duration of using it. I can understand folk agreeing to it for say six months. I also understand those who are told they must go on it for the rest of their lives politely declining it.

I understand that regular use of Cialis is prescribed, regardless of whether sex is taking place. I forget sometimes to take it and on other days I'd rather save the money and take it the next day.
Injections may may be an option you're considering but I have a better suggestion. Get him to take Cialis 5mg daily at the same time for say a week or two. Then one day get him to supplement the Cialis with Levitra or viagra close to when you're having sex.
See if that works.
Hopefully it will.
By the way a friend of mine, a really squeamish 63 yo says penile injections work and are not painful, once you get the hang of it. That said, I would try all the meds first before thinking of injections.

I had my RP last Sept. and like you I was really upset about how small I was up until about a month ago. I thought I was going to have to sit down to pee for the rest of my life, but I have been taking daily dose Cialis for the last month and using the pump a few times a week. I'm not sure which one has made the most difference, but I have gained a LOT of size back.
I'll be stopping the daily dose Cialis, (my benefits won't cover them) and starting this week I'll be taking a 20mg Cialis a couple of times a week because they are covered. Still no erection, but being able to pee standing up again has been woderful.

rick,
same here. At 8+ months post op, I do not see any sign of life in my penis, not the slightest twist. Using TRIMIX for rehabilitation and had sex twice since started in April. No spontaneity and that is a main reason why sex is not enjoyed more often. Another problem is, I don't want stick needle late in the evening or in the night, I am afraid to fall asleep before I see my erection is down. After it deflates, it goes back into my body and becomes invisible, only second navel. Have to sit to urinate because is not enough to bring it out of pants and underwear. Feel terrible.
