Dont get too worked up. I took either a combo of cipro and flagyll or Augmentin by itself. I had blood with my last episode and had multiple attacks at the end of last year that ended me up in the hospital on IV antibiotics. Clear liquids for 2-3 days then full liquids for 4-5 days then soft foods for another week or 2. You have to give your bowels a rest. I ended up having a foot of my colon removed this past December. My GI doc and multiple surgeons said I ran the risk of perforating if I didnt get the surgery. I had it robotic-laparocopic. In hospital for 4 days, then home. Its been almost 6 weeks now. Im feeling pretty good.

The Ct scan w/ dye they kept taking me in and out the machine now that does show my lower stomach right I'm not sure what all shows on a Ct scan of abdomen he knew non stop pain was in lower stomach . I just don't know what all a Ct scan shows . I have plain yogurt if I eat it while on the antibiotics will it stop the effect of the antibiotic and not let it work not sure when or how we are to eat yogurt I mean like after you complete the entire antibiotic and then eat yogurt or can you while actually on the antibiotic sorry so many questions .

      Crossdo,

You can take a probiotic with antibiotics. It helps prevent C-dif/bad bacteria, from growing. If you eat yogurt just dont eat it at the same time as you take antibiotics. Wait a couple of hours. Flagyl is specific to certain bacteria as is Levaqin or cipro/both levaquin and cipro are quinolones. You have to take the combination in order to kill both gram negative and gram positive bacteria. The only alternative is Augmentin(penicillin family). It covers both gram neg and gram pos bacteria. Do not take fiber when you are having flare up! Can make them worse. Bowel rest is required for the first 2-4 days. Start with clear liquids, then progress to full liquids such as ice cream, yogurt, creamy soups, sherbert, etc, then soft diet such as bananas, rice, potatoes, baked chicken. 2 weeks after your last antibiotic you can start back with fiber. No laxatives until you are healed from attack. Evidence based medicine says there is no correlation between food and diverticulitis. Dr's agree! Ive been told by multiple GI specialists and surgeons, to eat anything I want. With that being said, if you have seen a pattern with your diet and attacks, just skip that food. Many studies have been done and they have shown zero correlation between diet and diverticulitis. You get diverticulitis from feces that gets stucknin the diverticulum (pouches). It contains ecoli bacteria that proliferates in the colon and causes the infection!

I wish I had your your messsge sooner I ate a yogurt with probiotics in it about 1 hour before I took my Flagy I hope the antibiotic is still affective I will wait 3 hrs the next time, So all the infections we get in the pouches is ecoli scary now I'm worried about just been on the one antibiotic I stopped Levaquin because of it not good with heart condition so until I see Gastro Thursday I'm just on Flagy 3 X a day 500 mg I'll have to see where I can order that probiotic pills . So the yogurt I ate about 1 hour or less for my antibiotic will that antibiotic still count . Thanks for everyone's information it has helped ALOT!!

It wont bother flagyl. Milk products sometimes bind with certain antibiotics making them less effective. There are other bacterias besides ecoli but it is the most common cause. Do you have heart problems?

I was told I had a heart murmur. That's why I was going to keep taking the Flagy and talk to gastro about it Thursday . Has anyone else did treatment with one antibiotic? Gig what all treatments have you done? My son went to Walgreens to pick up the probiotics you said I called yo see if they had them they are expensive I hope it don't cost dirreah to. Now you are saying I can take Flagy and at the exact same time I can swallow the probiotic ? Do you take the probiotic just 1 time a day ? Is it normal that the bloody discharge and light pink blood can last off and in for days ? I still have mine , this stuff has me REALLY scared haven't slept little to nothing for 2 days so far 😐

Yes, you can take the probiotic with the antibiotic. It does not interfere with it. It will not cause diarrhea. It helps prevent it. Levaquin affects the QT in some peoples heart. Who told you to stop taking it? Are you allergic to penicillin? If you are not allergic, you can take Augmentin instead of flagyll and levaquin or cipro. I had the surgery 6 weeks ago. I had a foot of my sigmoid colon removed. Too many attacks. Im happy I had it. Was tired of antibiotics, ER visits, etc.

Hi Crosado8', I have always been prescribed Flagyl and Cipro together, you must not take anything dairy two hours before taking Cipro and and for two hours afterwards.

Yes I'm allergic to penicillin and everything in it's family! I stop the Levaquin because I was told I had a heart murmur, since you had surgery do you still have to take fiber stuff?

I never took fiber. It makes my acid reflux horrible. I eat steel cut oatmeal, 1/4 cup 2-3 x a week. I eat lots of veggies too.

With the combo of Flagy and Cipro what is you alls miligram of Cipro and how many times a day? Is it okay to drink Orange Juice while on the antibiotic and Is Orange Juice okay with diverticulitis ?

I just saw a good recipe for steel cut oatmeal... wish I could remember it. Put steel oats in jar with lid and soak with water over night.. next day heat in pot... remove and then add all kinds of fruit and possibly brown sugar and honey. I will have to try and find it.

The typical dose for cipro is 500mg twice a day along with Flagyl 500mg three times a day. That is what is normally prescribed.

Has anyone else had an elevated white blood cell count with this diverticulitis ? I am so scared and nobody to talk to as this happened to y'all please someone share . Double scared since I'm only on one anabiotic now I see the Gastro tomorrow but I'm scared that White blood cell is so High can it be from the Diverticulitis ?

Hardin memorial hospital called follow-up call I had her to read my CAT scan to me it said diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon and that my colon was inflamed, no probration or blockages, my white blood cell count should be between 4000 and 10,000 my was 11,000 something, so it showing infection she said .

Having an elevated white cell count is due to infection/diverticulitis. Its yout body's way of fighting infection. You need antibiotics that cover gram negative and gram positive bacteria. GI doc will know what to give you. No food. Go on clear liquids.

Does the Flagy ever make you nauseated , pressure in head and headache?
    • Posted

Yes, every time I had an attack I had elevated wbc's. 11,000 isnt that high. Its just a reaction from infection

Flagyl is a nasty drug. It can make you feel awful. Achy, nausea, just a feeling of being ill.

Gigi did you ever get through 7 days treatment with Flagy and actually take them ? Can we drink veggie juice ?
    • Posted

Yes, it makes me feel very sick and dizzy.
    • Posted

I had to take it for 14 days plus cipro, and they both make you feel awful. I wouldnt have veggie juice yet. Too acidic. Stick with clear liquids like tea, apple juice, and clear broth.

Update on my appointment with gastro today the PA called in another anabiotic Bactrim i've never taken that before either also probiotics and now she wants me take the Flagy for 14 days I thought 7 days was bad now I have to do 14 days! Bactrim DS for 10 days and the Flagy 500mg for 14 days. Then on March 22 at 6:30 in the morning I'm going for a colonoscopy he said I'll be there for four hours they put you to sleep and the actual doctor will take several different biopsies gives you pictures of your colon yikes ! I do all the bowel prep two days before. I'll start the Bactrim tomorrow because My son just picked it up at the pharmacy so I want to get on the regular schedule so I started 8:30 in the morning when I take my Flagyl that way I can take it twice a day on a decent schedule we didn't you get home till late this afternoon so far rest of the day I do Flagyl tomorrow start Bactrim if anyone on this list prays please pray for me for no allergic reaction to Bactrim I've never taken it before protection from the severe diarrhea that it can cause . I'll see the Gastro again after I have the colonoscopy done. Said they can't do it right now I need to wait 6 to 8 weeks because my diverticulitis need to clear up first.
