Kidney pain relief after lasering and stent pain
Posted , 46 users are following.
Hello. I just wanted to tell of my own experience. After laser procedure for kidney stone removal I found that this time I was in a lot of pain. The hospital gave me morphine and paracetamol but that didn't even touch the agony I was in. They then suggested Voltarol suppositories. (Diclofenac Sodium) not oral tablets. OMG did that work wonders. Just thought I would flag this up as I was in so much pain. Would like others to know that really helped me. Did anyone else find a good pain reliever??

I had 5 kidney stones one 10mm and they made me go through 5 surgeries and I thought the pain was bad from the stones. Then they put the stents in! I was already on pain managment for Fibromyalgia and they had to give me coupons for 1000 dollar a week sublingual Fentanyl. Even after that I could barely move and I had to go to work! I was walking like George Burns at the end of Oh God Book II. I made a huge mistake and drank a Monster energy drink with the stents in I was in the bathroom screaming like a girl. I stay away from all green leafy vegetables now and anything high in oxylate just to keep this from happening again! If I was a dog I would have been running down the street for a month screaming YIPE YIPE YIPE! And the worst part of having stents is THEY PUT THEM BACK IN AFTER THE OPERATION! Stone basketing hurts. And I hate to imagine what happens to my body during my operation at 5 different locations with a 32000 rpm lithotripsy machine going and a huge team of people watching. No wonder people point at me and snicker going down street! Just kidding Fentanyl helped but daludid pills are terrible, they wear off after about 2 and a half hours leaving you to suffer the other hour and a half.

Hi
I think a lot of the replies on here are from America
I am in UK
I had hyperparathyroidism 23 years ago and had a parathyroidectomy and so the problem of stones ended
Until recently that is
I had to leave work about a month ago in agony and headed straight to my local AnE dept where I was told blood in urine and after CT scan told a stone stuck in right urethra and 3 small stones in right kidney which was inflamed to 4 times normal size
Also a large inch long stone in left kidney which would at some point need removing surgically
So admitted ,and diclofenac suppository for pain and following day stent inserted under GA
I am told I will again under GA have stones on right lasered and after a while stent removed again under GA so am shocked to read some of you been told your GP will remove it or DIY (do it yourself)
Thank goodness for NHS here in U.K.
The stone removal by surgery on left kidney I have been told I will need a month of work which I could do without taking right now
Why I have stones again after all this time I don't yet know
Yes the stent a month on is still making me feel the " heebie jeebies " when I pee or just cos it's there and cos it can so roll on layering and then the stent removal ops
I go on holiday next week and hope I don't get a bout of cystitis whilst away just to add to the pains and discomfort
I hope all of you who have posted on here in the past are no longer suffering
Take care

Hi Sarah I am in the U.K. and my story is very similar to yours! Had the parathyroid op about 2 years ago after two large stones got stuck and had to be lasered. I thought I'd then be ok but at New Year this year I was back in hospital again with a 1cm stone blocking. I've been told there are more stones both kidneys but they can't get to them to laser them. I wasn't expecting the second one at new year this year but I'm hoping it's just one of the old ones that moved?? The stents weren't taken out under GA though !! He just pulled them out under a bit of local anaesthetic in an endoscopy appt. Hope you get sorted soon, enjoy your holiday and let's hope we both keep well after this lot !!!

Hi Angela
Omg only under local 😲
If that was the case I would want entinox too 😳
They actually gave me now info but did I'm sure say it's under GA
I was in chelmsford hospital in Essex
They said they would be testing to see if it was down to a naughty parathyroid again but I don't know when they plan to do that
I have pre op assessment early May but no op date for the lasering to be done
This forum has been informative and helpful thank you for setting it up 🙏💐

Hi Sarah! Oh you are welcome! I wanted people to know how good Voltarol is for stone and stent pain! I really just couldn't believe how it took the pain right down for me! So I thought I better share the info. It's Diclofenac Sodium apparently.
Oh I didn't mean to scare you about the stent removal not being under GA. it's honestly not that bad - just a bit uncomfortable. It helps if they ask you to cough at the moment they pull as well I found !!
Yes I've been told I don't have any stone making factors now - so I'm hoping that was just an old stone as I said !! I really hope I'm not still manufacturing anyway !!!
I really hope you get a date for your surgery soon. I am in Norfolk.
Best of luck with everything- keep resting and drinking as much as poss!
Angela.

Hi again 😊
Yes when I got seen at AnE I was given diclofenac suppository and it really helped I was very very lucky that at 5am on a Wednesday it was almost empty in there
Can't rest as was straight back to work couple of days after stent went in
I work at Stansted
Lots after water dispensers available so lots of drinking
Hope your stones stay away now 👍

Oh that was lucky! That the A&E was so empty! I've always had to ask for my diclofenac, so that was lucky again!
Hope you get your surgery soon, and I hope you can rest by sitting down as often as possible at work!

I just had the ureteroscopy procedure today and required a stent. I've been on the toilet since I got home five hours ago and am waiting for the meds they gave me (pain killer, pyridium, antibiotic) to kick in. Where can I find this Voltarol product in the US? Amazon doesn't even have it.

Hit "Reply" too soon. Pain....
I am having the burning sensation of having to urinate CONSTANTLY. According to the release documents, this could be the case for AS LONG AS THE STENT IS IN PLACE. Can anyone advise about if this is the case?
Would a warm shower lessen the pain for a bit? An ice pack? I can't find anywhere that carries the Voltarol suppositories (even in mail order--I'd pay for overnight shipping!) Any suggestions for how to deal with the non-stop burning would be really appreciated.

Hi Susan, I'm so sorry hear you are in so much pain. The Voltarol is Diclofenac Sodium, maybe they have a different brand name for it in the US you could research?
It's more for renal colic though rather than 'burning' I would have thought, but it may help you with that I'm not really sure. The burning may be due to the op; hopefully this will settle down soon. If not go back to the doctor and ask for advice. I did have bad pains when I urinated with the stent which was caused by the urine going back up into the kidney. As soon as the stents are out you will feel so much better.
Good luck.
Angela

Hi Angela: Thanks so much for the quick reply!
The surgeon sent me home with minimal meds--a low-level antibiotic, phenazopyridine (what you take to reduce the burning sensation when you have a urinary tract infection--NOT helping here) and a narcotic painkiller. I am BLESSED (that's the only word) that I started two days ago in the local Emergency Center (not in a hospital). THEY gave me Diclofenac Sodium, so I will take that again until I can get to the local hospital's full Emergency Department (ED).
HOW I GOT A LITTLE RELIEF: After calling the on-call doc and being told my only option was the ED--which is far from my home--I took the painkiller and anti-burning med an hour early. I made up my bed with a plastic shower curtain, two sheets, two towels with a puppy pee pad in between (I do dog rescue . I wore close-fitting underwear with a heavy-flow sanitary napkin. First, I laid on my back with my legs a bit apart--my right leg was bent, on the bed, with my knee away from my left leg. My left leg--I had my foot on the bed, with the knee bent, and slid a pillow under for support. Once the burning sensation had subsided, I rolled to my right side (how I normally sleep) and bent both legs, the mostly on top of the right. Pulled a sheet over me for cover. I slept about 2.5 hours. I didn't have a frantic urge to urinate, but I decided to go before I did. When I got to the toilet, I found that the pad was soaked and a bunch of urine was running down my legs when I moved the underwear. Mopped up with toilet paper (urine is BRIGHT orange from meds). Urinating wasn't too painful. Stayed in bathroom for about an hour (online and then took more painkiller and anti-burning. Headed back to bed now. Good news is that bed IS NOT wet!

Oh you are welcome! It's so nice to know you are not alone when going all through this!! 😊👍🏻
I am so sorry that you are having such trouble though. I wonder why it's as bad as that? I didn't have any leakage with my two stents. I'm wondering if yours are dislodged or too long for you? I'm not a doctor of course but I'm really surprised it's as bad as that. All I had was general discomfort and awful pain when urinating.
I really do hope you get some relief soon.
When do the stents come out?
The stone has been lasered has it?
Angie.

Hi Susan
I am sure I would be right in saying voltarol suppositories are on prescription only
They are a very effective pain killer for kidney stones
For stent discomfort/pain/burning that makes me wince I have been using ibuprofen as recommended to me on here by Angela ty Angela
They do help, not completely but anything that helps ,helps.
My stent has now been in 6 weeks and it hasn't eased in discomfort just make sure you drink plenty of water even when you don't feel like it because you know you will then pee more
Unlike yourself I have had no leaks but do get that "urgency " sensation that is discribed when googled and makes you feel like you can't sit on loo fast enough to make it .
I get my pre op assessment next week for lasering stones so hope the op will happen soon and then the stent removal soon after as it's stressful and getting me down at times and you find only other sufferers can understand that physical and mental feeling
I wish you well
Take care

I see there are new posts to this thread every few months, so maybe what I've learned can help someone in the future. I will include that I'm a 52-year-old woman in otherwise good health, 5-feet-8 inches tall, weighing 196 pounds. I imagine this information might be important for dosage levels for others.
I started at an urgent care place on a Saturday, thinking I had a urinary tract infection (UTI). They gave me prescriptions for a low-level antibiotic (Macrobid?) and the generic for Pyridium, which discolors your urine but relieves the symptoms of constantl having to urinate. Because this wasn't a UTI, the Pyridium didn't work well, then stopped working at all.
Tuesday, I saw my regular doctor, who suspected the antibiotics weren't enough to control the infection and now the UTI had spread to my bladder. She gave me a prescription for a sulfa-based antibiotic (would have given me a higher level, but I'm allergic to Cipro and drugs like it). She sent me for an ultrasound to see if I had kidney stones. PROBLEM: You have to hold 16 ounces of water for an hour BEFORE the ultrasound, then they roll a device around on your already-sore pelvis to get the pictures. After making the appointment, drinking the water and having to run to the toilet, I knew I couldn't do that, so I went to the Emergency Room.
At the ER, they gave me meds for pain and then did a CT scan to establish that I had a kidney stone that needed removing because it was likely too big to pass on its own. (Now that I understand all of the symptoms, I've probably been having issues from this stone for WEEKS, if not longer.) The ER did the following while I was there:
* Shot of Toradol (for kidney pain)
* Tablet of Odansetron under my tongue (for nausea)
ER sent me home with the following prescriptions, which allowed me to be pretty much pain-free until the surgery::
* Tamsulosin HCL 0.4MG Capsule: Take 1 capsule 1 time daily
* Diclofenac Sodium ER 100MG Tablet: Take 1 tablet 2 times daily
* Odansetron ODT 4MG Tablet: Take 1 tablet every 8 hours (dissolve under tongue, swallow with saliva)
* Oxycodone (can't find bottle right now for dosage info)
After the surgery where the stent was put into place, I was MISERABLE. The urology surgical practice sent me home with:
* The same low-level antibiotic as the urgent care place!
* More Pyridium (Phenazopyridine 100MG Tablet: Take 1 tablet 3 times daily.
* Hydrocodone/Acetaminopen 5-325 Tablet: Take 1-2 tablets every 4 hours for pain.
Because I was already on a stronger antibiotic, I continued to take that:
* Sulfamethoxazole - TMP DS Tablet: Take 1 tablet 2 times daily.
So after surgery I was taking:
* ANTIBIOTIC: Sulfamethoxazole - TMP DS Tablet
* PAINKILLER: Hydrocodone/Acetaminopen 5-325 Tablet
* PAIN RELIEF IN URETHRA: Pyridium (Phenazopyridine 100MG Tablet)
* SWELLING IN KIDNEYS: Tamsulosin HCL 0.4MG Capsule
* SWELLING IN KIDNEYS: Diclofenac Sodium ER 100MG Tablet
* NAUSEA: Odansetron ODT 4MG Tablet
And this DIDN"T CONTROL THE PAIN. I also couldn't hold my urine, so I was wetting myself and had to wear sanitary napkins if I left the toilet. Note that half of the meds I'm taking were NOT given to me by my surgeon! (When I called the on-call surgeon, she asked if I had the Tamsulosin and Diclofenac Sodium--I told her yes but not from her practice. At that hour, she couldn't have even gotten those meds to me!)
I went back to the ER the day after surgery, and they gave me another shot of Toradol, which DID control the pain of feeling like I had to urinate constantly. They gave me a prescription for Toradol pills, which turned out to the be the magic addition to the mix for me (ER doc warned that some people get no relief from this, but why not try?)
* Ketorolac 10MG Tablets (generic for Toradol): Take 1 tablet every 6-8 hours as needed
The pain from the STENT is GONE. I still feel like I have to go a lot when I'm awake, but this combination of meds allowed me to sleep for 8 hours overnight, get up and feed my dogs (and myself breakfast) without any issues and then sleep pretty much all day. I missed a bunch of doses during that all-day sleeping, so I'm having the "have-to-go-have-to-go" urge again while waiting for meds to kick back in.
Here's hoping some of this information can help one of you. No one deserves this kind of misery from doctors who have no idea what we're experiencing (and worse, don't seem to care.)

Thanks for your in-detail sharing -- it's very helpful. What wonderful health support you have; their comminication was thorough, and obviously they care about your comfort. I had the same thing done including (what I call) a pull-down stent which I am required to remove after five days. This was emergency surgery today because someone along the line mis-read my CT scan a month ago, and missed the 7mm impacted kidney stone. They didn't warn me there would be these tiny black strings hanging out of my urethra and everytime I wipe after peeing I nudge one and go through the roof with pain; I finally got wise and taped them. Doctor sent me home with antibiotics and fewer pain meds than you (1 every 6 hours) and without a verbal hint about possible pain. Needless to say, peeing is a 10/10 and abdominal/bladder is a solid 8.5 with pain meds. Just took some Ibuprofin and hopefully that will help. TG I have extra pain meds here that I can supplement, but I'll be raising hell tomorrow. Although they may be good practitioners, some doctors (typically male) just don't have a clue about (women's) pain.
Not sure about where you live, but in Ohio doctors are terrified of the DEA. Curiously, I just Googled DEA and it appears that the name has been changed from "Drug Enforcement Administration" to "Office of Diversion Control" -- and the site is down for maintenance. Didn't read about that in the news. smh

Correction my mistake - DOJ has an "Office of Diversion Control" department that is within the DEA
