Hello I too have fatty liver (I'm also T2 diabetic).  I get discomfort under right rib radiating to the back below my right shoulder blade.  I am slowly losing weight to improve things but it's going to be long and slow.  My LFT's all come back OK and due to have them done again soon.   My gallbladder and pancreas showed up ok on scan apart from liver cyst and fatty liver.  It's annoying.

Am getting nervous about my forthcomng LFT's.   It does worry me now knowing i have fatty liver (on top of everything else) but i am trying to rectify this with weight loss and excercis (not easy).  So far, my LFT results have come back OK.  I saw a programme last night 'GP's behind closed doors' and an alcoholic chap was one of the patents and his LFT's were in the hundreds and he had cirihossis of the liver.  I think he was still drinking as the doctor was trying to point out to him how important it was for him to quit.  I don't drink (only the odd glass of wine at special occasions) so feel a bit upset that i have NAFLD but doctors don't tend to worry about this as much as i do.   Do they doctors only 'worry' about things when it gets to a point where something has to be done?

Your diet is also important in dealing with fatty liver. Stop eating takeaways and boxed/oven/microwave dinners and eat home made food. Do not equate foods with fat as bad, the body is made up of fat and it requires it to function. Fat like protein keeps us feeling fuller for longer. The bad things is carbs, the unused sugar turns to fat and virtually everything we eat these days is full of sugar and carbs.

Think about it, you see blokes with beer bellies, how much fat is in beer? None, it is all carbs that turns to fat.

Thanks for your reply.  Yes it does make sense.  Since i have cut down my carbs and sugar intake my BS levels (i'm T2 diabetic) have improved and hope it will also improve my fatty liver.  I watched an interesting programme last night about Fat and Carbs.

I just wrote out a huge reply and it got bloody deleted. I'll try and be a brief but basically whilst you are correct that excess carbs though you should stress excess refined and simple carbohydrates will also add to a calorie problem if overeating.. it is mainly dietary fat even healthy fat in excess which causes the cells to become saturated and unable to accept sugar which causes the pancreas to stress out producing more and more insulin. Fructose is also a problem in high fructose corn syrup. But the main culprit is animal fats meat cheese and dairy. Even so cold healthy meats like chicken and fish are heavily linked with diabetes and I am living proof.

I understand your position, but I disagree. I eat plenty of cheese, butter, full fat milk, eggs and if I have a steak with a bit of fat on it, I eat that as well, rather than cut it off. Our system uses fat to digest food. I went down this route after an acute hospital dietician recommended this to me. I do however eat porridge everyday for breakfast - normal boring porridge with nothing added.

      My cholesterol is 4.2.

Fructose and similar is the problem, animal and dairy fats, no. We will have to agree to disagree.

"There are many causes of liver disease; the most common are infections with viruses and alcohol. Continuous injury with either of these agents results in permanent loss of liver tissue. One of the changes in the liver that occurs during injury is the accumulation of fat within the liver cells. This condition known as fatty infiltration commonly occurs in alcoholism, diabetes and obesity, and is in part due to a high-fat diet. With severe liver damage, liver cells are replaced by extensive scar tissue–the condition is known as cirrhosis of the liver."

Obviously this man is a convicted Vegan.

We can all say 'I did X and I'm fine' - but I think your approach is dangerous, to yourself and others.

Not everything is about cholesterol - what about your blood pressure, insulin and blood sugar - how often do you get those checked? And how old are you?

I am not trying to tell you what to think, just saying, that one can feel relieved of symptoms of pre-diabetes etc due to lowering blood sugar, yet they're still building long term insulin resistance and creating problems further down the road (clogged arteries and heart disease) my father eats exactly the same as you. Diabetic, with stents in his arteries.

I ate the same as you now, for 20 years, that's how I got sick. My symptoms are under control on a starch based low fat diet... and I disagree that this is somehow because we're all different - I think it's far more likely that the sort of damage you do on this high fat diet is obscured by cutting carbs but not stopped all together - as I said - you benefit yourself not flooding yourself with sugars ontop of fats, because that is a deadly combo - but a lot of fat and protein by themselves also create serious health problems.

The carbs are not 'dangerous' by any stretch in the absence of tons of saturated fat, salt and refined sugars. One needs common sense - a bag of dates is still a lot of fructose and pretty taxing on the liver compared to various portions of fruit throughout the day. Also if one has eaten until stuffed, and adds a huge bowl of fruit on top, excess calories can still be an issue or stress especially in a state of sickness - but healthy people should be fine, if active...

Add saturated fat in the mix, even monounsaturated fat like Olive oil in excess, and things get messy. As my friend Dr Caldwell says: NO OIL! It's NOT a health food.

Since being diagnosed with fatty liver 18 months ago I have halved my weekend drinking, and also lost 1.5 stone. I stay fairly active. Despite only having a couple of drinks at the weekend, and detoxing during the week, the discomfort is still there. It seems to disappear when I have a couple of beers to be honest! I have taken a bit of heart reading these posts, as it looks like I am not Alone! (albeit I probably have a few more beers than most)

Hi all I’ve been diagnosed with severe heptatic steatosis (fatty liver) from excess alcohol intake a couple of months ago , since then I’ve made changes to my diet with more water raw vegies, fish etc

And cut down my beer consumption

I too always have an aching through my right side of ribs which is constantly there however I am trying to exercise more too .

I’m just hoping with all these changes I can reverse my fatty liver and get rid of this terrible aching

Has anyone got any other suggestions that may help as mentioned like omega 3 milk thistle etc

    TIA
