Losartin Potassium

Hi I would love to hear from any one who is on Losartin Potassium for High Blood Pressure. I am a very fit 56yr old who is working in a professional job that needs a clear head and plenty of energy. However after three years of constant anxiety I was diagnised as having high Blood Pressure following three weeks of serious nose bleeds, and was prescribed Amlodopine. This worked well on lowering my blood pressure but had such bad side effects that I finally persuaded my GP to stop them . I am now taking Losartin Potassium 25mg and where as the side effects are not as bad as with the Amlodopine ,I am still experienceing severe tiredness and feel muddled and confused at times. I have only been on them for a week now and have to go back to my GP in three weeks time, but even though I am back in work I am not functioning the way that I should be. I would appriciate it if I could hear from any one else who is on this medication because I have gone from a very active person to one who is struggling to get through the day . Thank you

Hi everyone, I'm 54 and overweight, hence high bp, have been on various meds but found losartan to be the lesser of all the evils, I take it in the evening and find I'm ok during the day, I decided to post because I have had horrendous but unusual side effects with amlopodine, swollen lower legs and crippling Achilles tendinitis, after a week of stopping amlopodine, my legs are back to normal, the tendinitis is going off and I sleep all night without peeing, so I'm happy.

To the people on here that have considered stopping meds all together, DON'T, a stroke or chronic kidney disorder is far worse than a bit of discomfort.

Lorsartan, may not be right for everyone, but as someone who has tried most of the alternatives it works for me, my bp is now 145/80 which is acceptable.

I've been on Ramipril for 6 yrs..in Aug I had my eyes and half face swelled up. I put it down to something I ate...it seemed to settle down, then just before Xmas inside my mouth and lips swelled..making my face look bigger....dr said it could be a developed allergy to the Ramipril and gave me some Losartan ......I have not yet tried it as I'm intolerant to preservatives or something in with drugs, out of 3 Ramipril brands, could only tolerate one, which I've been lucky to be able to keep getting past 6 yrs....I'm at the stage now where I can't stand the burning and discomfort in my face and think I'm going to try the Losartan, I'm just hoping I don't react bad to it as I won't know if it's the drug or the ingredients in. With it, it's a nightmare !

I have been on different BP meds all with side effects. One even put me in hospital with severe dehydration and damage to the kidneys. I am now on Losartan 100mg and am not happy at all. My BP remains around 150/85. I have a dry cough which wakes me up choking in the night and my bowels are always liquid. Sometimes leaking so I have to wear protection and not go far from a toilet. I never had any problems before I took these tablets and my BP was more or less the same as it is now. I work with someone who has recently started taking losartan and they have the same side effects. Only their BP is lower. I am sick of going back and forth to the doctor and refuse to take more tablets to counteract the effect of these. I work with the elderly and many of them are on 10 to 15 tablets a day. Some to help the side effects of others.

Hi every one Stacy here after a long time. I have to say that I managed to persuade my GP to change my BP tablets from Amlodopine to Losartin after a blood vessel burst in the back of my leg. Well at first I found that Losartin 25mgs was making me light headed but nothing like the side effects of Amlodopine. My GP then decided to put my medication up to 50mgs which made me feel as though I was in a bubble and after much a to do she reduced it back down.  After two years of taking Losartin 25mgs I am on top of the world. Yes I feel tired sometimes however my BP remains around 130/80 on avarage which is brilliant considering it went off of the scale. I work long shifts walk my dog every day but do watch my diet and have cut out salt. Make sure those on high dodes of Losartin get regular blood tests due to the Potassium levels .

      Hi Stacy

It's good to hear happy news, so well done on getting your blood pressure under control on just a tiny dose of Losartan.  Wish it worked for me as it's the first pill out of half a dozen tried that hasn't caused me any noticeable, nasty side effects.  It's amazing how it works for some and not for others - I guess it depends on the reason for each person's individual high BP.  You say that you have also been watching your diet, so I'm wondering if you have lost weight which may also have contributed to your success.  Whatever you are doing, keep it up and keep well.

Hi Stacy i started taking amlodopine and lisinaprol in November and had severe side affects with swollen feet, ankles and legs, i came off them in february and was given losartin potassium 50mg for 8 weeks , i have been off work for a week as had a bad cough and throat was so sore i thought it was closing up, also flu symptons and continuous sneezing, also not sleeping very well, the docor explained that side effects were rare on this tablet, but after looking on line i told him i had all the side effects, he gave me an antibiotic as thought i had a throat infection and after 5 days and also continuing with losartin i had no relief at all and he agreed that maybe i should stop taking them and i was told to monitor my blood pressure until wednesday 6th May when i see him next!!

i will let you know the outcome .

    Thanks

    Liz

    Hi All,

I'm taking Losartan Potassium 50mg for the past 4months now and experiencing severe itching on my feet and hands.

Does anyone experience any similar symptoms after taking Losartan Potassium tablets?

    Any remedies please?

    Thanks

I had severe itching of hands and feet and suspected the Losartan as I had seen it could be a side effect. Then I found I couldn't pee.I also had a cough but not as bad as on Ramipril. Doctor said urine infection and gave antibiotics. However the lab result was negative. In desperation I stopped the Losartan and monitored my blood pressure. The itching stopped in a day or so and I can pee again ! I am finding walking is the best thing to keep my blood pressure down.It will still have a tendency to creep up if I do a lot of driving so I make sure I try and walk several times a day. having dogs helps a lot.Inactivity is my worse enemy if I have to sit at the computer or drive. My BP is no worse though than on the medication and its been about a month now.I'm 58 now and not as active in recent years and there is a family tendency on my Mothers side. I'm not over wight and I eat a lot of vegetables and avoid processed foods.I also kicked chocolate and anything sugary about 16 months ago which I'm sure is helping.I have never added salt and have always avoided salt anyway.

I would always advise to consult your Doctor before giving up on medication as high BP is a killer.Mine was not excessively high or I would never have stopped.I will continue to home monitor.Get your Doctor to check your meter as many aren't too brill and always make sure you change batteries regularly. Also don't neglect your Doctor.Still go for regular consultations. Its educational for your Doctor Too ! How will they know the best treatment if we don't keep them up to date !

    HI Stacy,

I have been on on 50mg Losartan and 10 mg Amlodipine for over 5 years

I always feel tired and for me the worst effect can be severe itching .

I have CKD  which is now at LEVEL 3B for quite a few years .

Fortunately I do not work aged 78, The doctors say it age related so perhaps I should not complain. I find I have to rest up in the afternoon OK IN MORNING

    Best of luck with meds

    Regards

    Phil

Hi Phillip, I too had severe itching of hands and feet on Losartan.I'd been on it for two years and all was fine, then the side effects began. Suddenly I found I could only pee a little and also had a niggling cough. Doc said urine infection but tests were clear. After stopping Losartan itching stopped and I could pee again and cough went. All in a couple of days. I now monitor my own blood pressure and am finding I must keep walking and being active. Inactivity is my worse enemy. I wouldn't recommend you to stop without checking with your Doctor first as high BP can get worse quite quickly especially later in life and of course many people can't be active if they have arthritis. So I guess they must try other medications. Good luck.

Stacy, has anything else changed in your life (diet, exercise, stress, etc?) I take both Amlodipine (5 mg)  AND Losartan (100 mg) every morning and did not notice any worsening of energy levels but am happy they lowered my b/p to a decent level along with the Metoprolol SR I also take in the evenings (100 mg). Have you seen an alternative medicine doctor for any of this? I'm so sorry you are having such an awful time.

Hi Stacey I use recently started taking Losartan 25mg for high blood pressure so I've noticed that my feet and ankles are swollen that is my only side effect. As soon as my Dr calls me tomorrow I need to ask him about this and my pharmacist said don't take it I talk to him.

I just has a very unpleasant episode with Losartin. I had never taken it before so I started with a tiny dose to rule out allergy. Even the tiny dose made my heart pound. Next day I tried about 1/4 os a 25 mg tablet and noticed heart pounding. Following day took half the 25 mg tablet and heart pounding became extreme, BP went up to 177/101 pulse 123 from 134/70 pulse 93. Effect subsided somewhat after about an hour. BP returned to 134/84 by the following morning. During the episide I felt agitated and couldn't sit still. Very glad I didn't take the full dose. Little doubt that Losartin caused a dangerous spike in my BP and pulse rate.
