loud roaring vibration sound in ear and hearing distortion

Hi,

Has anyone experienced a loud roaring low frequency noise in ear with hearing distortion.  I woke up one morning in December of 2015 and felt like there was a gong in my head all sound was vibrating. I felt like I was in the front seat of a car driving down the highway with the back windows open halfway.  I went to doctor and found I had lost some low frequency hearing in right ear.  I was Put on steroids for two weeks.  Got hearing back but left with this loud tuning fork/motor engine sound in my right ear and random hearing distortion in both ears.  I am very sensitive to low-frequency sounds and any kind of motors, airplanes and low voices just don't sound clear.  The motor engine stops when I speak and returns after my last word.  When someone speaks to me loud enough the motor engine will stop also and than return upon their last word.  Sometime sound drives the motor engine into the other  ear and I feel a fluttering/vibration/rumbling sound in the left ear.  If I shake my head back and forth quicky the noise will stop for a second wihile doing it.

Had so many tests and scans that don't show anything wrong.  My hearing test are normal now.  It is driving me insane.  Can't eat or concentrate. Severe anxiety.  Went to audiologist and see if I could have it masked but it is to loud.  I can't believe I can still hear over this noise and distortion that is going on in my head. Some days are better than others and I think I may be getting better but it gets worse again.  I have no dizziness at all.  Some doctors told me menieres disease or virus.  I can't stand it anymore.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi all, I know it's an old post but just want to let you know I'm 35 and have had rumbling/ ringing/ roaring in my ears for pretty much an entire 2 years plus. My dad has terrible hearing and my doc checked me out and told me i lost hearing in my ears and it happens. I work construction during the day and the noise masks the sound.(it also probably caused it) It's not till I get home and its quiet until I notice it. I suggest keeping the radio on and surrounding yourself with noise. Sit outside in a breeze any chance you get, keep the windows open. Also a good loud party seems to be just what the doctor ordered....well not really but it helps the double bass drum/ humming inside my head. I have slightly high blood pressure 145/90 and was told that can cause this as well. I get light headed and dizzy sometimes as well and feel i may have minieres disease.

Try not to let it get you down and power through it. It is annoying but not terminal. Everyday above ground is still a great day!

Keep noisy, watch the salt and have a great New year!

Hearing aids help too if you have a hearing loss because they bring sound into your ears. Just make sure you are protecting what hearing you have left, when you are in noise.

I get the same thing...Horrible. Stress, Hormones, allegy to dairy. (salt). I first expierinced that in 2014 and its 2017.. I think i have whiplash injury..Sleep will take it away...Motionsickness pills (meclazine).. nothing else seems to help. Its  deafening and scary.! Doctors?  Useless. High blood pressure, or weight gain makes it worse.rolleyes

I have the exact same symptoms so you're not along.  I've been to several doctors and they could not find anything wrong.  This all started over a year ago right after a tooth ache and root canal.  I've told doctors about the previous tooth ache/root canal and they seem to not care about that fact.  I'm still searching for some relief.

I am not sure If you are still experiencing this issue, but I think I had something similar a couple years ago. I went to many specialists and everybody told me my hearing was fine, But I continued to hear the same sort of low roaring in my ear. It wasn't until my electric toothbrush broke and I had to use a manual one that my symptoms completely went away. I am not sure if you use an electric toothbrush, but I would stop and see what happens.

    Hello Donna04072,

I have been doing so much research with different keywords of my symptoms and came across your post. It was written as if I had written it. You have the same sounds and sensitivities I do. I have had this off and on for 5 years but lately it's been very unbearable. I hope you have had resolution since this post. Could you provide me with any insight, new info, what doctors and tests you have had.

    Thank you

    Brooke

    Hi Donna,

It sounds like you have the exact same condition as me. I created this account specifically to reply and to try and help.

I've had what you describe for 13 months now. I've had periods (x3) of 2 week "holidays" when it goes completely. I wish it gone forever but it comes back.

I have had "usual" high frequency tinnitus before, which is dibilitating but this low frequency drone Ian on another level and life consuming like a parasitic bug sucking your life away.

I'm still awaiting further tests, but so far nothing conclusive after 3 specialists consultants, an MRI and CT-A scan.

What I can offer is perhaps two things to try which has really really helped me.

The first is easy and had initial good results of 80% reduction but slowly subsided to 30% reduction - and that was a decent 3M type ear plug. The memory foam type (screw it up and get it deep inside). It expands and feels a little weird but did help lots when trying to sleep.

The second one is a little more complicated but works 100% (for me). Get a smart phone. Download a tone generator app (there's loads to choose from), plug in your ear bud type head phone to the bad ear, and then "match" the frequency of the drone in your ear to the tone generator app by sliding the scale in the app (by trial and error).

It took me a few minutes but mine back in May 2016 was at 57 Hz and has since risen to 62 Hz. You may need to play around with the next step:- what works for me was to double that frequency, so my 62 Hz I would select 124 Hz on the tone generator.

What was incredible was that the drone in my ear immediately stopped. There was a sweet spot band of plus/minus 5 Hz around this frequency which solved my problem. Once out of that range - it came back.

More incredible was playing with the volume and removing the ear bud from my ear. I could put the volume up high and place the ear bud under my pillow! I've since done away with the ear bud and place my phone close to my bed at ear level and reduce the volume. It barely audiable (compared with the buzzing in my ear) and is like the best pleasure ever!

I hope this helps you and if not may help others.

    Good luck

    Mike

Its been awhile since your original post, I was wondering about your progress, if there is any. I too, developed weird changing sounds that would effect hearing to different degrees to the point that I rated loudness from 0-10. I could get a general idea of loss via some online hearing tests, because it was pointless to go to an audiologist when the loss changed daily and sometimes, minute to minute (even in my sleep)! The anxiety was awful at night, especially when the tones and volume would change, waking me up or not allowing me to hear my alarm clock if I slept on my good ear. I'm dealing with it better and don't require anxiety meds any longer, but it's still depressing at times. One day I was alone in a museum before it opened, and realized I heard NOTHING! It was the first time in forever that I could enjoy the sound of silence. I got my friend and went out to celebrate the rest of the day because I knew it would probably not last , and I was right. I look forward to days like that, and it keeps me hopeful. Supposedly, diet may help, but I tried all recommendations sans any success. It can always get worse and I once inquired about having my auditory nerve cut because complete deafness in that ear, would be far better than the water running, blow driers, frying sounds, overhead plane sounds, tinging, TTTSSSHHHH sounds etc. I do try to keep a loose database when it's really bad, in hopes of finding a common denominator, so far, to no avail. I hope you're doing okay🙏

The symptoms you describe I recognise as those that started in my left ear, in particular a constant 'wooshing' sound, I cannot even hold a telephone to my left ear as I cannot hear what is being said, so I have to hold the phone to my right ear.

I have been to my GP who has given me some olive oil drops which unfortunately have had no impact on the noise in my ear. She has also said that I will have an MRI scan to rule out anything serious that might be going on (a very low risk of it been down to a tumour). I am still waiting for the MRI appointment to arrive, hopefully it will be soon.

I wish you all the best and can find the answer to the noise in your ear.

    Regards, Ian

I'm sorry you're experiencing the sounds, I completely empathise. I've had an MRI to rule out other possibilities. After a few months of noise in my R ear, I started having sudden, horrific attacks of vertigo which ultimately led to a diagnosis of Meniere's disease (my mom was diagnosed w it in her 20s, but outgrew it by 35). The diuretics seem to have helped and initially, Ativan was used for the anxiety. It's been ~8yrs and there's been marked improvement, so I only use meds when sounds get v loud. I hope you find some relief, it can be incredibly unnerving. At times, I truly wished for deafness in my ear, instead of the ever changing cacophony. Good luck.

Thank you very much for sharing your story and for the kind words, I have to say that the sooner I have the MRI scan the better because at least then I hope I can eliminate the unknown and then get some kind of help with this problem and find some type of treatment that helps. I wish you all the best for the future, thanks again. Ian

The author to the book, The Ultimate Healing Guide, helped me to appreciate tinnitus may of stemmed from what he calls a rice allergy.

Last February I suddenly started to hear, the high pitch noise, 'the hum', diesel engine, the mill, and the bad street lights and felt a bad vibration especially in the bedrooms.

I would drive around at night searching out the sounds. I phoned in on the bad ballasts on the street lights.

This was in February when all the leaves fell making my EMF

signals to my smart meter stronger. I found out that the collector meter for the neighborhood was on the other side of the mill which their motor caused a loud noise to vibrate against the back of my house that I didn't notice before.

The power company pulled the power off the pole, took my meter can off and took it up the road and I still had the vibration and engine sound.

I bought a Smart Meter Guard and a Harmonizer for the house which helped but I had to correct the electrical errors in the house.

That takes me back to someone who had posted, that says you have to take care of the electrical errors. I had my grounds and neutral wires crossed in my panel and my grounds in the ceiling were very thin, soldered and the solder was touching the metal boxes. After each correction it got better.

Strangely enough when the leaves came back and the mill enclosed its motor, everything was back to normal.

Since my symptoms started to come back after eating some rice rice last month, perhaps rice does seem to make you more sensitive and bring on hearing issues. I used Arsenic as a homeopathic to detox.

Last night I came back into my other house it was like I could feel bad energy waves in the hall way. It got better after I turned the kitchen light off which has had a bad LED ceiling can. So I will have to fix it.

Tonight I read about a fellow who posted that the street lights can cause a vibration. So I am thinking of casing the neighborhood.

He uses a material on the wall behind his head to block the frequencies coming through the wall so he can sleep. At my bed is where I hear it the worst. The open room in the middle of the house is my best place to sleep.

I was also being bullied at work at that time as someone mentioned. The Workplace Bullying Institute has YouTube videos that can help with that stress.

Someone else mentioned ending it. Suicide is said to be a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I hope this helps.

Hello, I am a musician, a trombone player who had meniere's years ago, and now have sudden hearing loss in both ears.  I have purchased expensive hearing aids, but I heat different pitches - about a 4th apart.  The difference, along with the constant "chord" being played in my headmasters listening to music and playing music almost impossible.  Anyone else in this situation?

Hi Donna: I hope this finds you well! I've had exactly the same symptoms for 3 1/2 years now; seen several neurologists who prescribed many medications that either didn't help or had severe side effects.  I recently saw a vertigo specialist in Germany who thinks I might have Meniere's disease; he couldn't perform all required tests because of my hyperacusis to confirm the diagnosis.  Unfortunately, there's no cure for Meniere's, so I'm left with the roaring that is sometimes so intense that it makes my head vibrate. I've kept a journal, stopped drinking coffee & alcohol, nothing has helped so far.  It comes and goes.  Haven't been able to work either.  I'm thinking about contacting a clinic in Michigan that specializes in ear and balance disorders.  Don't know if I should even try or if it would be a waste of time and money.  Have you had any luck finding a diagnosis or help?
