Menopause - Perimenopause and Nausea

Hello Ladies, I found a little slice of information that may help some of you. I'd been dealing with horrible morning sickness like symptoms for months now. I just referred to it as nausea. My daughter, who just had a baby said "mom, that sounds like morning sickness". And she was dead right!

I'll just cut to the chase. After some research I found this page: https://suite.io/deanna-lynn-sletten/2zxy21w

Needless to say, I have been nausea free for two weeks now. (I wanted to make sure it was really working before I posted)

I recently (a few months back)  started drinking coffee in the morning only as a cure for constipation. (I hate coffee) I was also only eating some almonds for breakfast and three meals a day. Well, the writer of this blog has a few tips on what to change in your daily life to help you get through this phase. I stopped the coffee and drink Ginger/Honey tea,I  eat a banana for breakfast and smaller meals throughout the day. Most the writers other advice I already do.

Day one of my change... zero nausea. And everyday since for two weeks now. I'm still slightly dizzy, just slightly. But the most horrible side of it is gone. I hope this helps a lot of you too.

Best of health to you all! biggrin

Thanks for the information! That's exactly what this nausea feels like--morning sickness. I've had to make sure I wasn't with a pregnancy test. I'm 49 in August ( first skipped cycle, aside from one a year ago. Not nearly as debilitating that time) and feeling awful. Had to change insurance and just got a gun appt for the end of month weeks away. I feel awful too. This is my first bout with this hormonal intoxication. My early trimesters of pregnancy were fraught with nausea. When does it end??

    Thanks, ladies.

I like the Freudian slip "I have a gun appointment for the end of the month."  LOL. Seriously, feeling badly every day, especially early in the day, is awful. Mine gets bad almost two weeks before my period then greatly subsides when/if I get it. Very frustrating.

That link didn't work for me. Any more info on particulars would be really helpful. Also I wanted to pose a question to everyone:  are those of us suffering from terrible peri menopausal nausea the same ladies that suffered with severe morning sickness during pregnancy?  I had horrible morning sickness that required hospitalization with my first pregnancy and awful morning sickness through my other two that didn't reach that level of severity. I'm wondering if there's a correlation because most of my friends had little or no morning sickness and aren't suffering with nausea during peri menopause. Thoughts?

I had bad nausea bouts in both my pregnancies & am suffering in the peri as well. My nausea starts when my period starts or about the 4 th day . It's bad during the day & takers of about 9-10 pm. Returns in morning. I have had this for a year & GP has tried various medicines ,none working at the mo. I did have a vestibular problem which explained the dizziness but that has settled now . The nausea remains .,,...have tried ginger tea, accupressure bands and a few other things but when it's at its peak - nothing can quieten it . I will go to GP & see if can get referral- maybe gyn or endocrinology? Anyone beaten it or resolved with time ? How long?

Hi jan 1264 I have been trying to find a post that relates to hyperemesis gravidarum (severe morning sickness) and perimenopause and so glad I found yours.  I suffered from HG when pregnant and hospitalised, vomiting all day everyday until birth of my daughter.  I was unable to take the pill and my Dr warned me that menopause could have simiarl symptoms to HG and I am finding that to be true.  Am nauseated all day at a low level but enough to make me want to just go to bed.  Cant get my Dr to agree - am using herbs and acupunture will some degree of success but it is still unrelenting.  Its a lonely time when other women seemingly just fly through and you appear to be a hypercondiac!!  This forum is so helpful - how are you getting on now? Take care

Hi Glenda. I am getting the nausea too. I am 44 and just had my first late period. It feels like morning sickness. I actually was so sick a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't eat and passed out and had to spend the night in the hospital. I haven't been able to correlate mine with my period or a certain time of the month. Only it seems worse at night.

Hi! I'm relieved to find this post and thread! I had two severe cases of HG with my daughters (11 and 14) and over the past year I've felt an increasing tide of nausea take hold in my day to day life. Otherwise I'm healthy- not on any medications, exercise regularly, not overweight... this taste in my mouth reminds me of being pregnant. Sigh.

I did not have any morning sickness with my pregnancies but now at age 46(next month) I am feeling nauseous a lot in the morning..Subsides by lunch time.. I try to eat a little something in AM, like a banana or a smoothie but sometimes I just can't eat.. And some days are worse than others,  often just before and during my period..which has also become very annoying in that it includes cramps, super irritability and much heavier bleeding..I am so surprised but also glad to see the amount of info and ladies going through the same thing..makes me feel less crazy..

Hi there Jan, I just found this post. I'm 42 and have been suffering from nausea for a year and a half now and I really don't know what to do. I'm pretty sure it's hormonal as it feels very similar to the extreme nausea I had during both my pregnancies. I've also had many blood tests done and an abdominal ultrasound and all came back clear. I also had symptoms of under active thyroid issues I convinced my gp to give me meds even though my blood tests were in range. The thyroid meds helped, they took away the nausea and headaches for a month but now it's all coming back. Have you had any joy with any treatments? Are you feeling better?

I was just thinking the same thing. And YES!! I had HORRIBLE morning sickness with all 3 of my children. I am 48 and in menopause. JUST found out. And I just started having "morning sickness " stomach cramping (after coffee) stomach pain and NOT wanting to eat. Tonight I had soup. Stomach still in pain.  This is new for me it just started maybe two weeks ago.

I love your commentary has truly helped me thank you All

I had terrible all day sickness with all 3 of my pregnancies. I was very nauseated for about 4 months. I felt like I was pregnant all over again. I took dramamine with meclazine every day.

What made everything worse was the oral HRT. It gave me severe depression, mood swings, anxiety and gave my head weird sensations like swirling, throbbing, buzzing, humming and terrible IBS-D with hot flashes, heart palps and anxiety during every bowel movement. I asked severel of my doctors and they were all perplexed.

I had unusual side effects that are not listed for oral HRT. But as soon as I stopped taking them all my symptoms went away. Thank God for Cleveland Clinic!

My original OBGYN never called back when I said i told his wife (secretary) I felt like killing myself. I ended up going to Cleveland Clinic. The doctor put me on the patch and WOW what a difference. I suffered for 8 months because of a doctor who didnt really care about my side effects from oral HRT. Get yourself to a specialist for menopause. A regular OBGYN may not know how, why or even care if you are getting better.  Ask for the patch if the pill is giving you any side effects. I am on a much smaller dose and no side effects what so ever.

      Hi there everyone

I just want to give you all hope. I posted here 19 months ago when I was suffering from terrible nausea 24/7. I had the same thing with both my pregnancies. I am now nausea free about 90%of the time! You all need to get some bio identical progesterone cream and eat potassium rich foods everyday. Our nausea is caused by the big drop in progesterone during perimenopause. Apparently they treat HG during pregnancy with natural progesterone now as well. Within 2 weeks of using the cream I was basically nausea free whereas before I could barely function. I'm now working 2 jobs, enjoying my food and even riding my friend's horse! The cream also took away other symptoms like difficulty getting a good night's sleep, itchy skin etc.

You have to use the bio identical progesterone cream because normal, synthetic progesterone often has the opposite effect on a person. That is why some ladies say that HRT isn't for them... You have to get bio identical HRT. I know that you can get a very good brand of bio identical progesterone cream on Amazon called Ona's. Unfortunately you have to have a prescription here in South Africa so you have to find a doctor willing to prescribe it. Luckily I have found a brilliant Naturopath near me. You must all please give this a try, I feel almost normal most of the time now. I also make sure I eat a banana or avocado every day and, if I don't, I during an electrolyte drink with potassium in it. If I don't do this for a few days I do feel a little worse.

I really hope this can help some of you! Please try it, it has been an absolute lifesaver for me, literally.
