Menopause - Perimenopause and Nausea

Hello Ladies, I found a little slice of information that may help some of you. I'd been dealing with horrible morning sickness like symptoms for months now. I just referred to it as nausea. My daughter, who just had a baby said "mom, that sounds like morning sickness". And she was dead right!

I'll just cut to the chase. After some research I found this page: https://suite.io/deanna-lynn-sletten/2zxy21w

Needless to say, I have been nausea free for two weeks now. (I wanted to make sure it was really working before I posted)

I recently (a few months back)  started drinking coffee in the morning only as a cure for constipation. (I hate coffee) I was also only eating some almonds for breakfast and three meals a day. Well, the writer of this blog has a few tips on what to change in your daily life to help you get through this phase. I stopped the coffee and drink Ginger/Honey tea,I  eat a banana for breakfast and smaller meals throughout the day. Most the writers other advice I already do.

Day one of my change... zero nausea. And everyday since for two weeks now. I'm still slightly dizzy, just slightly. But the most horrible side of it is gone. I hope this helps a lot of you too.

Best of health to you all! biggrin

I don't know if anyone can help any more than what has been said but I have to speak to someone, I am desperate. I have been peri-menopausal for 7 years now the nausea has been constant over this time but the last few months I have felt that I have had a stomach bug. It's definately peri menopausal related. I have also missed two periods now. The first ones missed in the 7 years. I just can't bare it any more. Emotionally & physically I am done. I have been disabled by it and have no quality of life. My friends think that I'm exaggerating and that I should just get on this is as they have. I cannot take medicines due to my system being so sensitive. I eat as best as I can but have many allergies and coupled with the nausea many days it's just not possible. I consume ginger and peppermint like it's going out of fashion but nothing helps. I know everyone else is looking for an answer too but I just need some help. Thank you for reading. x

Am so sorry your feeling so bad. I can totally relate. I'm 8 years into this. I've tried many things and found some helped and some didn't. I can't do hormones so have to go it the natural way. I find b6 to have helped me more than anything. I take 50mg in addition to an organic woman's multivitamin with 25mg of b vitamins in it. It has helped me with the nausea, headaches, insomnia, anxiety and my energy is so much better. I also found acupuncture did help for a while too. I believe many doctors recommend b6 for morning sickness in pregnancy too. I have a few friends who have already gone through menopause and all suffered horrendous symptoms. My mother in law had the nausea too and it did eventually stop. I am like you and very sensitive to everything I put into my body but found the b6 definitely helps me. Some people take over 100mg per day during peri to help with symptoms. It's worth a try. Take care xx

Thank you Acejohnston, I may give it a go again. I was horribly sick the last time I tried but that is everyday now anyway. My b12 levels are ridiculously high which I find a bit concerning and may have a bearing on my reaction. Thank you for your input, it is much appreciated. I don't have anyone to speak to who gets it. X

Hi, I have posted many times before as NAUSEA was a dominant symptom of peri for me. I too am sensitiv to meds and found Dr's dont readily offer help w/nausea- Yes, I do the ginger and chamomile tea to help ease the nausea- One thing I have found tht works & AWESOME to relieve anxiety, mood, and giv you calmness, and ease sore joints is FISH OIL, & Vit D3 may help extremely to lower your bp (consult you Dr) I have found that most of us at this time are suffering frm low Vit D & our Ferritin is low which is the major cause of thinning brittle and loss of hair and tht low mood that we have- Be persistent and have the Dr. check your levels- Vit D also assist in hormonal balance.. I hope it will make a major difference! ; -)

Thank you.  Also Magnesium helps with sore joints, complexion and sleep. I have the spray that I put on my thighs (can't stand the feeling on my shins). It does help. I had my Vit D checked last year, but it was in the summer time, while I try to spend as much time outdoors as possible. My vit D wasn't low but it makes sense about the Fish oil,  (omega 3 fatty acids). I do need to have my vit d checked again. Also my potassium. Nice thing about Magnesium your body gets rid of any excess you don't need.

I had my hormones checked last year also and she said they were normal, but admitted that they can fluctuate. I didn't make the appointment yet, I have a standing appt next month. I will get some fish oil and I have vit D. I will have Dr. check it again. Insurance is a funny thing about having those things checked.

My bp is really a fickle thing. I was hospitalized for extended stay for it twice. I had an acute attack of CHF. Cardiologist said that, and after a heart cath other than a bit of cholesterol my heart is fine now. But I have to be on BP meds. Ideally I would like to eventually be on a maintainence dose. (You never really get off beta blockers). But I have to lose about 50lbs and get my self together. Some days are better than others. I think I would like myself much better if I could lose the extra weight. GRRR. smile The weight is not a friend to my symptoms.

      Hello Keljo,

I was reading a recent post that you made and I know we shared information previously.. ; -)

Ive had jus' about all the test performed as yourself and I'm scheduled for that fun colonoscopy (only because it's about time)

Since I posted last I received additional blood work that I requested my Dr to test for:

My Vit D was VERY low deficient at 24!

My Ferritin was only a 10!

Vit D as we all know is a Hormone. If its low it can GREATLY, SIGNIFICANTLY affect our brain function causing fogging brain, mood swings, anxiety, depression, muscles and joint pain, that extreme fatigue lathargic feeling. of doom! ; -(

So often we ladies are just sent away from our Dr's and our symptoms are thrown in a (Menopausal Junk Pot)

I was prescribed 50,000 iu of Vit D a week My muscle aches, anxiety and fatigue are finally gone but it took at least 3-4 weeks

I was also given ferrous sulphate to increase my Iron.

Low ferritin can be the cause of thinning, brittle and loss of hair-

My nausea is no longer a major factor.. though I couldn't find any connection with Deficiencies + Nausea.

I hope this information is helpful to others..

      Pls stay well! ; -)

I have had the nausea, and am sitting on the cusp of anxiety. It feels like I am at the top of a rollercoaster ready to dive off into full fledged anxiety attack. It has rendered me incapacitated for a week. I suffer from very slow gallbladder and LPR so I have had those symptoms on top of it. I just break down sobbing from it. I feel like a nut job. I have never had children, so I cannot attest to the nausea theory. To add to my sad sack existence I don't know a sole where I moved to besides my husband, who is really no help. He just asks if I want to go the E.R. Ugh!

I am making an appointment with my D.O. and though I don't feel it will productive, and will probably make me feel worse about myself (hypochodria) I still will make the appt. They are so chipper at the Dr. and I feel like a depressing middle age slug  that can't remember what my old self feels like. I have a period about every three or four months. I understand that woman on the "other side" of this says it will get better, but it sure doesn't feel like it going through it. Especially when you have doubts thinking "Maybe there is something seriously wrong with me, maybe it isn't perimenopause" I have had all kinds of bloodwork done on me, almost every kind of test you can imagine. I have even had three MRI's in the last 4 years. But there is still that doubt that they may have missed something. I am 48 (will be 49 next month) and when I turned 45 it was like my warranty expired. lol. Everything started falling apart. I don't drink , I don't smoke, and I am sedendary because I just don't feel well enough and lack the energy to move. This nausea/anxious feeling is kicking my butt. I sip on chamomile tea. I drink rooibos tea for stress and headache relief. I cannot eat bananas cause it triggers my LPR for some reason. I have to watch what I take because of my bp meds and cholesterol meds. I am a mess. My hair is blah, my skin is blah and I feel hideous. Which is making me b*tchy. smile

Oh my gosh..I cannot believe someone feels like I do!! I turned 45 last year and already feel like I am falling apart, it's awful..The nausea, sometimes want to cry all day long, tired, anxiety comes and goes, and just suddenly and generally not myself..6 mos ago, I was fine, now..miserable at times..This is SO not fun, going to graduate school full time, working almost full time (4 days) and taking care of my family, and home..It is allso overwhelming and not what I had ever imagined or expected..Also been to the Dr for blood work, cultures etc..nothing out of the ordinary..Did not check my hormones but I am pretty sure they are fluctuating..I am always thinking something "else" is wrong with me..well, clearly this is quite enough to contend with.Makes me feel absolutely insane sometimes...I am so sorry that this is such an issue and look forward to being supportive and finding some things to help. Take care.

I feel like us nausea sufferers are few and far between.. I wouldn't wish this on anybody..I am 44 and haven't had a full period since last February.. I spotted in sept a little. My nausea and craziness started back in December. I had the hot flashes randomly for a few months before that but all of a sudden I was constantly nauseous spacey / lightheaded feeling/ lump in throat/ vision blurry in one eye..not sleeping... I couldn't stand the smell of food which led to me not eating cause I was too sick so I have now lost over 20 pounds which has led me to extreme anxiety.. I have taken a leave at work because I couldn't (work at a restaurant) I have been to ent to look at throat::gastro dr had scope ( reflux) :: had gallbladder sonogram. Hidascan :: blood work out the wazoo::: ended up going to er because I was dehydrated and at the peak of nausea and anxiety from worrying about losing weight so fast. Er dr did a cat scan of my head chest and pelvis to rule out malignancy and only thing that. And back was natal hernia.. I should mention I went to gyne and eye dr first and was told by gyne. That it's not menopausal symptoms it's probably my stomache( hence this all started) so after all of this I am still debilitated and turning into a hermit in my house. I'm scared to make plans. Feel like I look horrible all of the time and am trying to convince myself this is really menopause.. I took my dr advice and started Prozac 4 days ago. Omg!! I am 10 times worse now!! I didn't take it today anxiety nausea shakiness heart palpitations like crazy!! Def not for me!!! It's hard for me to believe this is all menopause!! But I have to come to terms wth it. I am going shopping tomorrow to get b6 and d supplements and fresh ginger to put in tea.. Thank god for these forums...thank you all so much for the suggestions and I am so so sorry we are all dealing with this 😞

      Amber,

Doctors dont realize people need to work up slowly on their anxiety meds. I take effexor for my peri anxiety and started slowly by counting 6 pellets out of the 37.5 mgt capsule and then took that for a week then added 2 pellets each week after that. My doctor knows I do this and it works for me. I do have to say I am on 20mgs now and I should probably work up to a higher dose because this is such a terribly hard time to get through. Hope you can get through this ok. I do not know anyone personally who has suffered the way I have. It is at least reasurring when i hear women say it will pass. But I have to get up each morning and force myself to get through a day at work without completely melting down and just going home to sleep this away.

Hi I was just looking for a cure to my horrible nausea the link you put on won't work so please can you tell me what you take to stop the problem xx

    • Edited

Hi Susan, I don't know about the link you're referring to but maybe I can help. I've been suffering from nausea for almost 2 years now, it's been so bad I can't function properly on a day to day basis. I noticed by chance that drinking a sports drink seemed to ease it a little and when I researched it I found that nausea is a symptom of low potassium. My blood tests showed normal potassium levels but I looked into it anyway. We need about 4700mg per day and supplements only contain up to 100, so that's no good, so I went out and bought bananas, sweet potatoes and avocados. I've been eating 2 bananas (400mg each!), a sweet potato and half an avo each day for the last 4 days and I'm feeling so much better. Hardly any nausea and my constipation is a lot better too. My diet before was extremely healthy and contained a lot of fiber so it wasn't lacking in that department, I just needed a boost in potassium. Please give it a try and let me know. Good luck x

Thank you for this. I know my potassium is low and sodium is high. My nausea is off the scale. I can't function and am completely disabled by it and other perimenopausal symptoms. I will try this if I can get some food down me that is. :-/ Thank you for your input. Something else to try. I'm desperate and can't afford to lose any more weight.

Hi there, I know how you feel! Please let us know if it helps x

I too have had bouts of really bad nausea. The sports drinks seemed to help me too. That and ramen noodles. Which, I know the noodles aren't great for you and that would be too much sodium. But, I literally lived on those two things for about 5 days after being in the hospital for nausea and passing out. Which was from not being able to eat.
