Mirtazapine withdrawal, how long does it last?

Posted , 179 users are following.

Hi, Just looking for some reassurance/support. I was on mirtazapine for about 6months. I went up to 45mg and decided to taper down as I felt they were making me worse and the weight gain was nasty. I felt fab tapering down and generally, its been better than I anticipated however, I'm approaching the 3rd week off of mirtazapine and have started to feel a bit anxious the last few days. I've read withdrawal peaks around the 3/4week mark, so I'm trying to stay positive that it will pass.

I’m seeing lots of “Heart” activity on our posts from what I assume are members here who are just lurking and reading.

I’m inviting all you readers/lurkers to post your story and tell us how you’re doing on your withdrawal?  How’s it going for you?  Was your mirtazapine (AD) wean and side effects as hard and long as what we’re experiencing? Do you have any tips to share to help us get through this?

      Good morning Toria

I am the same, unfortunately. Maybe even worse since I got very little sleep.

I realized what was causing the very severe diarrhea, I was taking too much magnesium. Had it in my cal mag, which I up’d to two scoops and was also taking mag caps. Cut back and things are better. However, the excess in magnesium was also helping me sleep. So it’s either sleep and have diarrhea or no sleep.

How are you doing today? It’s week 14 day 2 for you.

I’ve had what I call the “body buzz” for nearing 3 years now. It’s an anxiety symptom where my body feels like it’s buzzing from the inside out. I effing hate it. It’s extremely uncomfortable and it’s accompanied by loud ear swishing along with my ability to feel my heart pounding throughout my entire body. Sometimes more prominaye than others, usually when I’m having a panic attack which is frequently.

      Anyone else?

      Hey Jo.r,

I am going on almost no sleep, either. I am so cranky. My skin is creepy crawly. So Mg, helps for sleep? Trying to ride this out...13 weeks. Jeez. Hope you start to feel better.

So sorry you’re sleep is bad too, Gretel.

Yes, magnesium is very good for sleep but be careful not to over do it.

I was taking 2 heaping scoops of Thorne cal mag (200mg mag per) and two mag caps (150mg each). That added up to 700mg. Far too much hence the diarrhea. They say you should not exceed 500mg magnesium a day.

Magnesium is also good for things like leg cramps. Maybe try it to see if it helps you sleep. Also as Toria mentioned in earlier post, you can take a bath in Epsom salts before bed, that too has magnesium in it.

I would also suggest buying a DoTera oil called serenity and rub that on the bottom of your feet at night.  Hope this helps.

Thinking of you at the dentist today, Toria. I know you’ll  be just fine. Be brave girl.

Thanks Jo.r! I appreciate the info. I will pick up some Mg when I go to the drug store. I really enjoy pooling are experiences. I am going to my dr. next week and he is really useless.

I did some more reading Gretel and says woman should not exceed 350mg magnesium /day.

And yeah, unfortunately the medical community, even my ND, have a hard time helping with this. At least my ND tries to tackle the symptoms with natural remedies that work with my body as opposed to the conventional docs and psychs who try to push more toxic addictive drugs on you.

I’m trying very hard to not trade one POS drug for another. I never wanted to be on the pharmaceutical train. Psychs like to chase side effects of one drug with yet another drug, rinse and repeat. Doctors are no better. Answer to every ailment is take a drug and if you have side effects, here’s another one you need to take.

Don’t get me wrong, drugs have their place and save lives. It’s just got excessive IMHO.

Oh my goodness jo, I have all that but only since quitting mirtazapine you poor love x

It started back in 2015 when I had the failed attempt at quitting mirtz. My body never recovered, and may have eventually but I went back on it because we didn’t know what else to do. So there’s that.

I am trying so hard not to let them put me on another drug, just as younaccurately say they just chase one drug with another, im not having any more of that.

imhave today bought magnesium spray so going to try to use it and seeif i can tolerate it.

Everyone recovers eventually it's just hard as some people's withdrawals are harder than others, I know that myself as the first 2 times were a walk in the park compared to this time x

Once you rid yourself of the mirtz Ann, get yourself a good Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and tell them your goals. Tell them you need help with withdrawal but only want to take non-pharmaceutical based supplements. Don’t get me wrong, herbs and supplements can be just as potent and some can be habit forming but they are far far less invasive and toxic, they work WITH your body.

I’m in the US, and here the BEST NDs are Bastyr Alumni.

Bastyr has a search where you plunk in your location and it shows you the nearest Bastyr practitioner. Let me know if you want me to link that here.

That sounds great. I am in uk so not sure about ND here. I am also on warfarin.

Do they have Naturopathic Doctors in the UK, or are they called something else?

Most ND practices here have a herbalist, acupuncturist and of course NDs on staff.  Also many NDs here can also prescribe pharms if needed.

In the last 6/7 years the insurance companies are more and more covering ND visits and supplements in the US.

Oh and also a massage therapist is on staff too.

I’m glad dentist went  we’ll. I too have to go, I’m very overdue but anything medical is my poison of poisons. I use to love going to get my teeth cleaned. Now not so much.

I need someone to nag me to go and not wait anymore, it’s already been 10 mos since last visit. Not good.

I know how hard it is to say no to their drugs, Ann. All you want is to feel a semblance of normal again and you deserve that.  I struggle with the same issue.

I tell myself no more damn drugs, but then I worry what if I can’t get back to my normal self without.  I decided I want a fighting chance and for me that means I want a baseline of how I am without any altered state caused by pharms.

I think this mirtz thing is easily the hardest thing I’ve had to do in my life.  It’s like trying to wake up from a nightmare.

Let us know how the magnesium works out for you, okay?

Used the magnesium spray last night.  Didnt notice any change so will keep trying and see if it builds up.

formthemlast week or more i amgoijg tombed ok but waking several, times in night with sore throat and thirst, feels like a cold, yet when i get up in morning these symptoms calm down only to appear again evdry night.

i know that mirt lowering can cause  old like symptoms. Ut is this something to do with it or just a. Old.  Usuallymi get sofe throat,,then runny nose then its over in three or four days.   This is different.

see gp today but expect she will ask me wny imhavent dropped, down further on mirtaz as she said it should take only a month or so to get off.  Do these drs not read anything about withdrawals?

I still plan to drop, slowly again soon but root canal work tomorrow at dentist and then optician review monday.  Hope i can get through them first.

am worried how i get 10% off 3.75 anyway

      Ann,

I have also had a stuffy/runny/itchy nose and dry mouth since stopping. I am also very thirsty at nite.

I would say all the cold-like or flu-like symptoms are definitely attributed to the mirtz w/d. Mirtz has histamine properties and lowering it or quitting it would make sense your body’s addiction to it would cause those symptoms to show. Those same symptoms are reported by nearly every person that w/d from mirtz. Eventually they should get better and then completely go away.

Yes, keep trying the magnesium, hoping it will eventually help with sleep.

I’m not sure how you can reduce down 10% either. Since you’re seeing your GP today can you ask her to prescribe liquid mirtz? That should make it easier to try and reduce 10%.
