Mucus plug

For years I’ve suffered with a post nasal drip and build up of mucous at the back of my nose! When I get a cold it gets 10x worse. The mucus builds up to the point that it feels like it moves around and blocks my nasal passages so I can’t breath. Blowing normally does nothing to help. Eventually it will get so big it will drop now my throat making me gag and want to throw up!
Recently I’ve found that if I can make myself sneeze several times (by sticking tissue up my nose at tickling my nostril) to loosen it then I can blow it out. When I do get it out it’s a big 2p size blob of thick browny yellow mucus and tissue. It’s honestly the most figuring thing I’ve seen and due to the size I get why I gag and can’t breathe.
Has anyone experienced this or have a solution to stop it? I’ve been to my doctor and they just give me beconase nasal spray which does nothing.
Thanks

Oh my god, I can't believe I'm not alone here. I have tried to explain to my doctor what you've been talking about, thick mucus being stuck in your throat, unable to move. Sometimes sneezing dislodged it, sometimes I need to make this horrible snorting noise for hours before it'll move. I feel so disgusting. Have you had any success with treating it?

i know this is fairly old but i too have had a lot of the same symptoms sometimes i would push on my lymph modes in my throat just trying to get it to dislodge and swallow it or spit it out i assume that mine is due to allergies and post nasal drip. its so uncomfortable makesnit hard to swallow feels like im trying to swallow thick glue almost and then something just hangs there eventually i get it to go away but usually after hours of fighting it ive tried some nasal sprays they sometimes work but i used to get a tonsil stone and still do from time to time using q tips ive learned how to remove them and there offending problems for some reason i was going theough this mucus stuck in my throat feeling and i went in to use the bathroom and i figured well let me see if i can see anything took a light shined it in there and there was a glob of mucus sitting behind my ulvula i used some q tips and tried to grab it without trying to gag myself and after a coulle of times i finally got all i could see immediate relief i did notice that some of the mucus was dry and rubbery kinda so maybe a combination of thinks dry sticky mucus pnd and instead of leaking down your thraot to be swallowed it backs up and hangs out in the throat i assume the dryer stickier mucus causes a glob to form so maybe next time if you all feel this itll help i wish i had known about or thought to do this ueara ago for it happens so oftwn

hey im back and feel worse than ever. still no answers and feel like crap. im having a bunch of systemic issues now and feel like im dying a tiny bit everyday. i keep getting dismissed by doctors; they simply are giving no effort into trying to find a diagnosis
im getting this image cultured but i know its going to be tested for the wrong crap. to get somthing like that out from my sinus (snorting, being forceful) is like winning the lottery; it simply doesnt happen.

Hi something similar happened to me. i sometimes get that Sensation of constant postanal drip & the urge to blown my nose/ itch my throat but no relief.....in my experience the only thing that really helped was 4 things - 1) - trip to a allergy specialist
2) drink warm tea / hot soup. and
3) 3) using a baby nose suction - 4) - expensive nose sprray called Xhance. its like around $300 but it works helped and lot. I found Coupon to help afford et . xhance is supposed to work diffently than normal flonase spray because the bottle is shapped differently to give a better spray deeper in the deep pockets of nasal sinus cavaties.

I knows its an old post but i was looking to see if anyone had done what i did tonight and stumbled upon it. Then i HAD to create an account JUST to comment!!
1: Thank you to everyone who has commented even though you will likely never see this. The many different suggested remedies have been noted and saved to try if my remedy tonight proves ultimately unsuccessful! So thank you!
2: I was really hoping I wouldn't be the only one who basically tried to operate on themselves, but I guess i am.
I took a mini flash light and shined it on the back of my throat while using a q-tip and the end of a (clean) pimple popper tool thingy, to literally cut the damn thing so what HAD come out of my throat partially could finish its journey down my esophagus! Now im afraid i injured my throat cause now Im not just clogged up, but now it feels like i cut my throat...even though i didnt because its kinda hard to do without abrasive tools and they werent abrasive.
But we will see if i can finally get glob of gunk left over to finally come lose so it will come out.
I have always had nickel/dime/sometimes even quarter size masses that would pass through my sinuses before i was able to choke myself till they came out. Earliest memory of it is actually my big brother teaching me how to "hawk-a-loogie" when i was 5 trying to dislodge one. Drs have recommended surgery for years even though it wont really fix it because the cause is dehydration. RARELY is this an issue when its warm outside but in the winter my chronic dehydration coupled with dry air because of running the heater, never fails...by Thanksgiving Im in a contest with my nephews who can "hawk-a-loogie" the fastest and whos is bigger! I usually win!! LOL
I am allergic to the minerals water treatment plants and facilities use to clean and purify the water that comes out of our taps. 99% of bottled water is just tap water, or tap water ran through another at the bottling warehouses so i really cant drink bottled water either. I started smoking very young and quit 5 years ago...still happening! I drink juices and milk instead of water but still dehydrated.
So yeah...hopefully i didnt injure my throat because that would really suck to realize i did that and it didnt really fix the problem! But grabbing the glob and wiggling it to cut it...feeling it move inside is freaking disgusting!
So in closing, my contribution on things to try would be this: take a bath as hot as you can tolerate it, and put your head under the hot water so your ears fill up with hot water. Coax all the air bubbles out so youre fully submerged and the pressure is equalized in your ears. Then sit up let them drain on their own. Then go under again and repeat a few times till you can feel the difference. Then when you get out, clean your ears and dont vomit when you see what comes out! And start hacking like crazy...glob should dislogde after that.
And if it doesnt, grab it and dont cut your throat when you try and pull it out!

Hello! I (a 29y/o old female) have this same mucus plug that forms around every three days. I cannot say how long I've been getting these, because I was oblivious to them for some time, only noticing when they became so large, they dislodged themselves and slid down my throat causing coughing/gagging etc. I have, however, become extremely familiar with them since late 2019 and for that reason, have not really seen fit to burden any medical professionals with my boogers right now.. (Covid crisis, and all)
^That is not to say that is the best move for others - I am young, otherwise healthy, and experiencing no pain associated with these issues, allowing me to postpone treatment.
ANYHOO - I'm just here to share my
little tip for getting them out to hopefully lend some relief to you guys!
I get them out through my nose. The key for this is usually catching them early as to keep them small, but if it's soft-ish, it should come out regardless of size. Start by getting ready to blow your nose as usual, creating the necessary pressure to get as close to a "honk" as you can get, but instead of "blowing" from the base of your nose/sinuses, force the air up starting from the base of your throat. It takes me 2 - 7 good pushes and the scab is dislodged, blown back through the nasal cavity, and straight out my nose! The weirdest part is, because it's coming from the throat, it can come out of either nostril.
I really hope this helps you all remove these in a newer, easier way because I know first hand how much stress all that sucking, clicking, coughing can put on one's body /:
And in adding insult to injury, it's also an embarrassing scene to make!

i am so happy i found this thread. i've been wondering for years what's wrong with me with these big plugs of greeny brown mucus coming out of my nose, or coughing them up when they get caught at the back of my throat. antibiotics weren't helping and i spent a lot of money on a dehumidifier that also purified the air, thinking my allergies were just flaring up constantly. i've wanted an ENT appointment for ages but with covid i don't think i'll get any clarity any time soon

Good Evening Renee and Everyone,
I was up late googling some information and came across this discussion and site. I would like to share my story for support and to provide any information with my experience.
After returning from Afghanistan August 2010, I experienced many medical issues to include mucus plugs (scabs) ever 5-7 days. I had no idea what they were and never shared with anyone, I was embarrassed. They started to impede breathing, they became very smelly, and reached out to my primary doctor for help. I was referred to ENT November 2020 and my doctor saw the ‘mucus plugs’ in my nasopharynx and diagnosed me with chronic tonsillitis and adenoiditis. Since that time, I have had the following treatments:
13 Nov 2020: Aggressive saline irrigations for 1 month.
13 Dec 2020: (Follow Up) mucus plug was still present and added 2 week of mupirocin ointment (antibiotic) into my saline irrigation’s for 2 weeks.
5 Jan 2021: (Follow Up) mucus plug was still present. I started having deep jaw pain/pressure and ear pain. I was Issued oral antibiotics (Amoxicillin) 875 MG/twice a day for 10 days.
21 Jan 2021: (Follow Up) mucus plus was still present. My doctor ordered a contrasted CT Scan of my nasopharynx and I hope to have it completed by the end of next week.
During my appointment on 21 January 2021, my doctor started asking me questions about being exposed to radiation, had any radiation treatments, or if I ever lived in Korea. I told him no to the 3 questions but told him I was deployed to Afghanistan.
With him asking me those questions, I started doing more research and found a few interesting things.
-Dr. Tahir Saharan, Director of Afghanistan Atomic Energy High Commission, released a report on 25 September 2020. This reported stated, during the survey, our team found a number of radioactive materials among Military Scrap Metal with very high radiation doses.
-I also discovered an Ionizing Radiation fact sheet from 1996. This sheet stated the largest natural source of radiation exposure to humans is radon gas. Radon concentrations can vary depending on the soil and rock composition beneath buildings. The northwestern part of New Jersey is part of the "Reading Prong", a geological region with a high granite content. Granite can contain higher than average amounts of uranium, which decays to radon gas.
I grew up in Southwest New Jersey and lived in Northwest New Jersey. I was also stationed in Afghanistan Feb - Aug 2010.
Have any of you lived in NJ or stationed in Afghanistan?
I am trying to add the reports but I am having issues...I will post them in a separate post.
Thank you
Heather

It is nice to know I'm not alone in this stupid mucous problem! I wanted to share some things that have helped me, and also thank the people who've listed what's helped them, especially the hot tea thing. I have found that mine is not as bad if I'm hydrated, like two pitchers of water per day, consistently. As far as drugs, Mucinex (or "Mucus Relief" as the generic is called) has been miraculous in stopping the constant production of snot, though it does not get rid of The Chunk. The number one thing that keeps me chunk-free is...and you're not going to like it...not eating carbs. I discovered rather accidentally while trying the keto diet that the mucus just stopped when I stopped eating carbs. And now if I "cheat" and have carbs, including any form of sugar like in soda or sweets, breads, pastas, or anything processed, pretty much, the snot starts immediately and a new chunk forms. Just an FYI that might help someone somewhere with this. It's horrible how it consumes your life when you constantly feel like you're about to choke or gag, and it doesn't sound like any doctors have a clue or take it seriously enough to learn about it. Ultimately food is still medicine. Or in this case avoiding some foods is better than medicine.

I love how you call it "the Chunk.
Mine is the Boogey man, forever lodged in my nose.
