Muscle twitches and spasms all over body
Posted , 61 users are following.
This particular problem started about 5 years ago, however it was much more mild and not as worrying. The muscle twitches originally started in my feet and legs, and was more of an annoyance than anything. At the time I also had trouble sleeping, so my doctor suggested a sleep study, perhaps the twitching was causing my body to not fully fall asleep. However, the sleep study did not show any abnormalities in my sleep pattern. The twitching eventually subsided/became less noticeable, and I forgot about it.
In the last 30-45 days or so, however, I have noticed the twitching both returning and being much more frequent, and also accompanied by muscle spasms as well. The twitching occurs all over my body, including; feet, ankles, calves, thighs, knees, glutes, wrists, fingers, elbow muscles, and biceps. The muscle spasms have only occured in my thighs, calves, and glutes and are not as common. The spasms are very rapid and only last for a few seconds.
I decided to keep track of the frequency of the twitching for a 5 minute span (both laying down and in a sitting position) and it occured around 8-10 times within 5 minutes (varying from fingers, glutes, thighs, calves, etc). I am worried that these symptoms may lead to something greater, as I am only 20 years old and am not sure if it will become worse as time progresses.
I should also mention that I am prescribed 150 mg Wellbutrin and birth control daily, and have also been taking painkillers as needed for the past few weeks due to surgery. I also suffer from mild-moderate anxiety. I do not believe that this is a side-effect from my medication, as I have been on these medications the past few years. I am not opposed to visiting the doctor, I just don't know if a specific doctor would be necessary or any other advice would be helpful.

I know your post is from 12 months ago, but just wondering how you are doing. I had a total knee replacement on Jan. 25, 2017 & my both legs started to have muscle twitching in May. I can see the twitch moving under the skin. I went to my G.P. who did extensive blood work which came out good. He suggested I wait a while & if not better to see a neurologist which my appt. is Nov. 17th. In the meantime I have an appt. with my ortho Dr. this Monday. I want to ask him if it could be related to the surgery. I did have a nerve block before surgery & I know they apply a tourniquet during surgery which could of damaged nerves. My twitching has gotten worse & is affecting other parts of my body also. I just hope the neurologist can help me or the Ortho Dr. has some ideas of what has caused this. Hope you are feeling better & have a diagnosis for your condition.

Hi Erik, I went to neurologist for twitching symptoms I have had since May. He told me not to worry about ALS since twitching is only one symptom among many others. I also read online that if you have ALS your twitching would hardly be felt since the muscle is dying. My doc said I have benign fasciculations since I do not have any other symptoms. I was told by my ortho Dr. to take Re-Mag by Dr. Carolyn Dean. You can order it on line. My neurologist agrees & even told me to up the dosage up to 600 mg. and see if that helps. If not, drink quinine water. I am going to have an EMG to have piece of mind even though the neurologist didn’t think it necessary. He also gave me a script for blood work to check my thyroid. I also asked if he could give me something for my anxiety since it can make symptoms worse. He gave me a script for Xanax. I feel the neurologist gave me a good exam (nearly an hour) and he did observe the twitching in my legs. I feel a lot less anxious now! Maybe you should try the magnesium, very important for the body & Re-Mag is the most absorbable in liquid form. Look it up!

Hello, I have both I guess I have very subtle twitching if that's what u mean but mixed with ones u can feel and see I'm on b12 and been on mag the liquid form and vitamin d3 it's only been 3 months but this nurse practitioner I just saw today just scared the hell out of me basically telling me that it looks as though I have this disease based on testing of reflexes I'm already a high nervous person so I didn't see what she saw but that's not cool she not even a Nero she works under one and only saw 3 cases said good luck and sending me for emg but not sure if I want to know I'm emotionally drained

Erik, try not to worry! This nurse practitioner is not a neurologist and should not of scared you like that.....shame on her! Go for the EMG so you will have peace of mind. Why didn't the neurologist examine you? If you are not happy with that practice find someone else. I would bet you have benign fasiculation or some other non life threatening problem. I really think you should seek out another neurologist! If you live in N.J. I have a good one to recommend.

I don't get it all my family members lived long lives and no sign of this in family history maybe this APRN is right and not sugar coating it and I'm screwed

Yes but from what I'm learning even if it's negative doesn't mean u still don't have it so still will be on my mind I feel like just running out the time to see this wait game cause either way no cure and so If goes away bonus if it done then the worry continues either way the worry will always be present so I think by knowing like if it comes out bad I believe your mind goes into decline mode quickly cause someone telling you in fact most likely u have it this lady ap

Hi erik92351, I just read some of yours and Dolores messages, And she is offering you some very good advise. You have a very small chance to have ALS. But in my case, It did take 4 years approximately before I was Diagnosed with it. But that is only because there're hundreds of other things that can cause your body to do this. But worrying about it is the worst thing you can do. Dolores and I am not just saying that. Try hard to stay calm, Anxiety will cause any MND to get worse faster. One thing to remember, If you don't have noticeable weakness in any arm or leg or both, You do not have ALS. Plus ALS involves a lot of other symptoms besides muscle twitching. Hey, let us know what your doctors say. We will be here for you. OK..

No not at all like I said this is only 3 months in and started out of no where .. If I think hard than I would say pre symptoms were like my right calf cramping but here goes my lifestyle so everyone can know this i believe is very important .. I'm a high anxious person in general, I have worked 2 jobs for 13 yrs in a row with a music career that never took off lots of disappointments lots of trama from friends just dying around me that were like bam bam bam and on top of this my work is weekends at a facilty 3rd shift weekends part time but there have been numerous times I have been forced for 20 - 30 hours straight in a row and when that's not going on I own a flooring business so I would get out of work and go do selling , installing, running around like a mad man then would get somewhat normal sleep after working like 20 hours in a row then wed Thursday Friday normal sleep pattern so on top of that got married moved then moved again and bought a house with full rehab that I had to fund then on top of that struggled with gambling at casino where I would blow all my money and create huge stress for myself so all this work just to make it by like a person with a regular job and then sprinkle in spending on my music which I was picked to be the next big thing" and that lead me to horrible disappointments then it seems in the last few years any ailment I would get I would blow it out of proportion and think the worst and so doc visits up the butt looking for stuff that wasn't there and so here we are I do believe u can give yourself ailments like the A word because u break your body down and central nervous systems the power of the brain it's like overloading a computer soon or later will crash so I'm going to try and reboot my computer with rest and nutrition cause the way I am is not health period just in writing this now I'm like holy moly look what I have done to myself ! Even now that unprofessional APRN she was convincing me of stuff she asked do I have trouble swallowing and I said no I have no bottom teeth in the back that's the side I chew on and tend to eat fast and swallow bigger chuncks of food and sometimes on the left side sometimes food feels like it's stuck but that's been that way for a while and so she looked at me like ok dude ur kidding urself that's trouble swallowing" and now I'm thinking about it today and it's on my mind and now just swallowing saliva feels funny u see the power of the mind can trick all of us overthinking .. just look at those crazies out there like Charles Manson who convinced with his mind for these other lost ppl to do Heynis Crimes when they were prob good ppl before that wouldn't do anything wrong and he convinced them he was some kind of god or whatever cult leader our minds are powerful and I believe we with the help of god can change things around and reverse them when we're not told we have something if we stew on it we create ..
