Muscle twitching and jerks

Hi. I have read a couple of places that other people experience this with peri. Just wondering if anyone has a clue as to what causes it. It was bad for about a week and then got better. Now it's back. Ugh. Such a worrisome symptom. Please again tell me I am not alone on this one!

I was so glad I found this thread. I was really afraid I had some neurological disorder. I have experiencing muscle spasms and jerks for the past 9 months.
I am 36 , was put into Surgical Menopause at 32 because I had tumors on my ovaries. I have lots of not so fun menopausal symptoms that no young woman should have to deal with, yet here I am , dealing.
I take HRT (I am on estrogen patches and a small dose of progesterone). The muscle jerks and spasms are usually in my legs. For me, they seem worse at night, so not really sure why that is. It is both worrisome and bothersome.
I think it is triggered by hormone fluctuations, but doctors don't seem to know enough about this area of women's health. When I asked my doctor and hormone specialist, he didn't seem to know anything about this symptom.
I am so happy i found this thread!!!! Has anyone found a solution or way to get them to go away? I don't always have them, seems to be when my hormones are especially low since my hormones are entirely synthetic now due to ovary removal. Any help would be much appreciated.

I haven't found anything that makes the spasms go away. At first my doctor thought they were from anxiety which was my first symptom back in December. She prescribed me muscle relaxers, but found out I can't combine them with the anti-anxiety meds I'm now on.
For me, the intensity of the muscle spasms depends on the day. Some days I don't have them at all and others they are CONSTANTLY rippling through my legs and it's really annoying and distracting. I think exercise helps a bit, but it may just be an unrelated coincidence.

I have been facing muscle twitches since 4.5 months now, its regular( everyday) , all over. I had neuro appt 3 months ago , EMG came clean. I had IUD which i got removed almost 3 weeks ago. My blood work came all good , no deficiencies.
My question to you is, when you had twitches, u had them everyday?

Hi. Yes I did have them everyday. I still get them occasionally. Sometime I will just be sitting and my foot will jerk.🙄. Sometimes it’s just the small twitching up under the skin and sometimes I don’t notice anything. Sometimes I think caffeine makes the jerks worse and fatigue makes the twitches worse. I just started exercising again and I’m hoping that will make it disappear.

Hello all! Are people still active on this thread? I've experienced on/off muscle weakness in my arm since last Spring 2019 and occasional spasms/twitching/electric-like surges throughout the summer. I've been able to do all the things, but when I'm at rest, its a different story. Waking me in my sleep, too. The last week, the spasms/twitching/electric-like surges are kinda all over the place, some back, stomach spot, and now both legs. All my tests at the doc are positive results. I'm quite healthy and normal levels for everything. Next stop, neurology. Of course, I'm Googling, not a god idea! Anywho, I've come across this thread and it sounds so similar to what I'm experiencing. Ironically enough, I have my annual OBGYN appt on Monday. With the little known if this correlation, what do I even bring up to my doc/NP. I need help with next steps. Thank you so much in advance! Lindsay

hi lindsay! i am still here. sorry you are having these issues too. are you in peri? there are a lot of women that have this during these hormone shifts. maybe they could check hormone levels?
do you take any medications?

hello there. i still get my period monthly. it has started to be heavier. i'm 40, so its not that far off if i'm starting peri. i started a low dose of prozac, but I'm also on D, magnesium, and ashwagandha. my plan is to check hormones for sure. i'm just feeling off my rocker. i try to stay off dr google, but there are so many stories on this website who mirror what i'm feeling. i just want to put this unrest to rest. i might check adrennals, too. i can't imagine my cortisol levels are normal in all this. thank you for replying back!

Hey Lyndsay, my journey sounds almost identical to yours. started it all around 40. i am about to be 43 and i still have the symptoms but they come and go. my right arm felt weak and painful for a long time but it was worse in the beginning. now it comes and goes and not so bad. i had to start Clonazepam to sleep at night because the twitching and jerking was keeping up and then also causing extreme anxiety. i had never experienced any of the symptoms until right around 40th bday. anyways, i stay off google for sure!!!! that made every symptom so much worse for me. i also just try to ignore the symptoms. drs werent a whole lot help for so i dont try to seek out answers for now. if things get worse i will. good luck! praying you get some peace.

Hello Lindsay,
So glad to see that I'm not alone living through these troublesome symptoms. I too feel strange weakness or jelly like legs - but I still go on my jogs and feel inner tremor/shaking and all the twitches every where. The neurologist said no cause for worry and will be following up with him on Monday. I've been taking Card-Mag Magnesium but I haven't found it has helped much. How are you coping?
