Muscles twitches

Hi everyone,

For the past two months I've had almost constant twitching in my feet and calves, and have now also developed occasional random twitches in other parts of my body. Sometimes I'll even have a finger or toe jerk. (I've tried taking a magnesium/calcium combination over the past two months; no effect.)

I think I'm in perimenopause. I'm 49 years old and my periods have been extremely heavy and starting to get irregular. About two years ago I started developing pain and it has really escalated (especially in my legs), but the thing that really stresses me out is the twitching. I don't want to go the doctor with this just yet; I've already spent countless hours at doctors' offices and labs (for a facial neuralgia) and I don't want to go through that stress all over again just now.

Does anyone else get this twitching (or ever had it), and do you have any thoughts to share about it? Thanks in advance for any thoughts at all.

    Hi !,

For the past 5 months I have experiences muscle twitching and spasms with starting in my legs and now I feel them all over my body. I also feel inner tremor and vibrations all over my body especially at rest. How scary! Cranial MRI revealed nothing of concern but still, I filled with anxiety and worry!!! Never thought I could go through this!

      Anita,

I have the same symptoms! It's awful. Had tons of tests too and MRI and all normal. Yesterday, saw an endricronologist and he's checking my adrenal glands, thyroid etc. I have to have blood work done up for this. This is the last thing to check. Again, this is all just awful to deal with. The tremor feelings are the worst! I feel it all the way into my hands.

Sorry to hear it, @anita42201. I'm still having the all-over twitches (some days milder than others) but I've noticed it's especially there in my left foot/calf (along with a sensation it's going to stiffen up, but it doesn't), and sometimes that same area feels tingly too.

I used to have a sensation of tremors, but this has settled down for at least a month now and I wonder if it's because I've been taking magnesium/calcium, CoQ10 (in ubiquinol form), and fish oil -- maybe one of these helped somehow? I was taking these supplements with the hope of calming the twitches down; it didn't get rid of the twitches, but the tremor feeling is mostly gone, coincidentally or not.

I'm dreading starting the medical investigation process for this (already been through a lot with investigating a facial neuralgia; a brain MRI 1.5 years ago showed nothing) but will get to the doctor soon and will post here if there are any updates.

These symptoms can be very frightening but I find that doing things like watching Cognitive Behaviour Therapy videos, reading about Stoicism, engaging in things that are pleasant to the senses (like breathing in essential oils) etc can help keep negative thoughts at bay to help me get on with my day. I really try not to dwell.

I hope you all have a really good day!

Thank you for responding Stella-z, this is the only true comfort I have gotten in months doctors don't acknowledge that is is due to peri menopause ! Wonderful advice i'll keep you posted too!!

@Nettie261962, how are you doing now, and how did the visits with the endocrinologist go?

I was seeing one a long while ago about an adrenal adenoma, but my doctor refuses to give me a referral for a follow-up because they didn't find high-enough cortisol levels at the last visit over a year ago (cortisol was at 50, apparently borderline high but not bad) -- but my new symptoms of twitching etc only started a few months ago. So I can't get things checked out by an endocrinologist because my old tests weren't too alarming. So frustrating.

How are you doing now? I still have the twitches and I'm getting discouraged. Will this ever end?

Doctors refer to everything is due to anxiety and I'm now on antidepressants.... Help.

Wondering if there is another supplement I can take.

@Nettie261962, how did it go with the endocrinologist? Any findings?

I hope you are feeling better.

Oh, and I meant to mention I've now got a new symptom: a deep sensation of itching, mostly around my legs and arms. It started about a month ago, then subsided, and now it's back. My goodness. Trying not to get too wigged out.

yes, I'm twitching, tingling. and gave random finger jerks.

I am afraid it will end up a horrible neuro disease.

I've a host of other things too.

The only thing giving me a little hope it's menopause related is that many other women seem to be suffering from similar things.

Sorry to hear that, @Gwenn1120. I've still got the twitching in feet and calves all the time (plus random twitches everywhere), occasional tingling in left calf and foot (but seldom; seems to increase when I think about it), and very random little jerks. Plus a lot of stiffness and pain.

For the stiffness and pain, my doctor says it's nothing to worry about (!). For the other stuff, I asked to be referred to the neurologist I was seeing, although I'm almost thinking I should wait longer and see how things go.

I hope you feel much better very soon!

I have thyroid cysts but the endocrinologist feels my labs are all okay so he's not concerned about my symptoms nor the ultra sounds.Sooooo back to nothing. Seems so unfair that some of us have to suffer so much and others in menopause breeze through it. Wish I had an answer for all of this.

@Nettie261962 I hear you. I hope it all turns out to be a phase we're going through and that the symptoms subside! And I hope you have a really good day!

Hey Stella, hope you have found some relief. Im having same sx and its random.i started mg and b12 and ca ans its calmed down some. been going on several months now. its scary but i try to calm myself down as im about to be 51 and been on pill for years. im also having nighr sweats and weird spacy feeling as well as crushing fatigue that comes and goes.i tried to come off pill myself and symptoms went crazy

Hi @amy72821, wow -- it's great to read that the magnesium, B12 and calcium seem to be helping calm things down. I hope it continues to improve.

I've still got the twitching after 4.5 months -- mostly a sensation of little parts of muscles twitching all over my calves and feet, and then randomly somewhat "larger" twitches in other parts, and then the occasional tiny jerks of a thumb or toe -- although yesterday I had a better day overall, (maybe coincidentally?) after trying an electric back/neck massager that my husband bought me.

I still feel I have brain fog and have trouble remembering facts.

I feel like I have less coordination of my hands and other parts than I used to, but honestly I don't know if that's stress or even my perception playing tricks. It seems I'm going deeper into perimenopause now -- I get very overheated with sweats for days before my period, and my periods are arriving every three weeks but are starting to be less heavy. I still wonder if all the muscle/coordination issues are related to a hormone change, and alternate between thinking yes/no on that explanation.

Please keep us posted. I hope things get much better for everyone!

Stella! stay strong! I am a NP and i still stress! Today its my eye. I told someone the other day the difference in being 20 or 50 is if someone says do you want to look good or feel good its def feel good! ive been dealing with crashing fatigue and feeling weak for 5+ years.then it lifts for a while. last year for months i felt like i was off balance and had a band around my head all the time. after 6 months it just went away. Now the twitching which i hate!anxiety seems to def make it worse.i came off my birth control for 2 weeks to try and stop those and my sx went through roof! started back and better but still there. its one crazy thing after the other. i wish it was just hot flashes. i got those!

hi amy, i know this is an older thread but wanted to reach out since it sounds like you're experiencing some symptoms even while on the pill. is that correct? i'm turning 50 this week and i've been having similar symptoms as many here - maybe not to the same degree since i'm still on the pill. can i ask how your symptoms were even on the pill? just milder? when did you come off? how were your symptoms when/if you came off the pill? just trying to figure out if my symptoms are peri or something else. thanks so much!
