My cure for LPR!!

Posted , 24 users are following.

I was diagnosed with LPR in July 2017 having gone to my GP with a feeling of a lump in my throat.

The standard PPI's were prescribed and many of them, all with no effect. My symptoms became worse and additional symptoms developed. Pains across my chest, pains under my arms, painful lymph nodes, back pain, headaches, feeling of my throat swelling, choking, sore throat day after day after day!

Camera down my throat into my stomach, camera up my nose and then down my throat, voice therapy, bland diet for six month!!! and I mean six months, no alcohol, chocolate, fatty foods, I didn't cheat once.

Alkaline water everyday, books bought, research conducted, DGL, Mastic Gum, Slippery Elm, natural alternatives. Gaviscon Advance, probiotics, we've all been there.

Paid privately to see a specialist who was happy to take my money and tell me I was going to have this for the rest of my life so "Get used to it"

I felt SO BAD!!! depressed, looking for a miracle, prayed a lot! I really thought it was going to be the end of me. Anxious, unable to enjoy my life anymore knowing that this pain was going to be with me forever.

The alternative medicine did help ease my pain but it didn't get rid of it. At the end of everyday my throat would be so sore.

I've mentioned the probiotics and I was taking these for around 3-4 weeks before I started to notice a slight improvement. I was taking 2 x 3 billion good bacteria in tablet form about 30 minutes before my evening meal.

I continued on this dose for months until a friend came over just before Xmas and handed me an un opened bottle of Acidophilus 20 billion. It may sound silly but in all the hours of research conducted It didn't dawn on me that I could up the strength.

I started taking just one tablet before my main evening meal since Xmas.

Gradually all my symptoms have subsided, so much so I had 2 cans of a Cola yesterday and no issues at all. I had one just to test it and then another as I couldn't believe I wasn't experiencing any pain!!

I'm not saying that this will be the silver bullet for everyone but for me by upping the strength has made such a MASSIVE IMPACT. I'm still in shock that I no longer have a sore throat, any feeling of swelling or difficulty swallowing.

I wanted to share my findings as I know exactly what hell looks and feels like.

Its not a quick fix and has taken several weeks to to get to this stage but they have really helped me.

If you stumble by this post I hope that this information may assist.

Good luck and if I experience any changes I'll come back and post again.

Hello, Simon i'm glad you were able to find a solution for yourself. I've been wanting to switch to that diet for a while now, but i don't know which foods are considered bland foods. Could you please tell me some foods that you consumed while on that diet?

      Hi Destiny,

For me I was so determined to not aggravate my symptoms I kept with the same meals every day, and I mean every day. Sounds really dull and boring but it did help a little.

      Foods for me included:

Potatoes, Veg, Chicken, Fish, Turkey, lightly salted popcorn, salad (no toms, peppers, onions, garlic, salad dressing)

No red meats at all - no fried food at all- no choc- no alcohol- no fizzy drinks. No fruits. I made sure that my diet was massively healthy with the veg.

I hope that gives you an idea. I'm aware there are several books available to purchase which can guide you through an acid free diet. Some of the forums list them also. Hope that assists. Please let me know how you get on. Good luck.

Can i ask what is the name of the probiotic you use? i have tried probiotics before and stopped taking them after a few days because i have side effect, loose stools and gas. not sure if these are side effects or just my body adjusting to them. also are you taking other supplements?

      Hi Maria,

Ive been taking Acidophilus extra strength 20 billion from H&B. I take one capsule with my main meal in the evening just at the end. Best to take them with food otherwise lots of bloating and gas.

I'm not taking any other supplements at the moment.

No PPI's - I'm still taking G advance before I go to bed but this is something I intend to stop as I'm not having any symptoms.

Let me know how you get on. Good luck

i am nexium now, i am planning in slowing wen off of it. did you took any supplements or probiotics when you reduced your ppi dose?

I didn't take any supplements at all. All the PPI's I took seemed to make my symptoms a lot worse. I slowly withdrew PPI's and then started supplements.

Hi Gillian, to be honest I don't know and wouldn't like to advise you either way. For me I stopped taking the PPI's first before trying the probiotics

What a great post and thanks for sharing that information.

I too am concentrating on improving the gut and I'm taking a probiotic which contains...

Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Streptococcus Thermophilus, Lactobacillus Rhamnosus, Lactobacillus Salivarious, Bifidobacterium Bifidum

...that is one capsule taken with a meal, they have to be kept in the fridge. So that is a capsule with five active strains.

I'm also taking two Colostrum capsule a day, with > 35% immunoglobulins.

Added to that is maintaining a good diet as well as eating live, unpasteurised sauerkraut.

The above certainly seem to be helping my digestion and bowel habits. Hopefully the LPR will also improve in time.

Peptac is still being used in the evening.

Like you I had gone through all the other remedies you have tried. I have had scopes from ENT, many many times, cameras and scopes from Gastro specialists and Bravo chips and probes fitted in the larynx to monitor reflux.

For me anxiety I imagine also plays a role.

Best wishes to you, please keep us updated.

Hi, I too have Gerd and silent reflux and have at some point had virtually every symptom on this post. Struggling a bit with post nasal drop and sore throat but getting over tonsillitis. I had been on esomeprazole for 13 years and for last year have drastically cut down to maybe 3 x 20mg per week if that. I take the probiotics you have from H&B but have also started drinking kefir which I buy from the supermarket in UK, I get the raspberry and cherry ones and have noticed a drastic reduction in stomach gas, bloating and just feel much more comfortable. I am a believer that having healthy gut bacteria helps a lot of other problems, worth a go as I cheaper way of helping yourself than paying for PPIs

I have seen it in Sainsbury's, plain. But which one has the flavoured Kefir that you buy...?

I have been thinking of trying it, thanks for posting what it has done for you.

Sorry can't remember the name need to get some more, it is in a white plastic bottle with a red label, the plain one has a green label and I do buy it from Sainsbury's as well. Not cheap but I noticed a difference after a couple of day. ASDA had it on offer for £1 a bottle and this can last 2 days although I drink it all. I feel less bloated and more comfortable all around my stomach area

Thanks for the description and name. It'll give me something to look for.

Sorry to bug you but got often and how much do you drink of that Kefir.?

I have the Probiotic capsule each day along with a colostrum capsule.

      Thanks

Hi sorry for late reply. I have them about 4 days a week and noticed a difference. My sister said I look flatter around the middle. I haven't lost weight so must be less bloating which happens when I get really bad GERD

Thanks for getting back to me, no need to apologise. Sorry again for bugging you.

I have tried the Bio labeled ones and they taste fine.

I'm tempted to think about making my own from Kefir grains. It seems very cheap and easy to do.

As mentioned I think that gut health plays a role in helping with this situation.

For me it will be better when I get off these antibiotics, side effects include heartburn.! Only three weeks left of the course.
