    Orlistat Shortage Update

posted: Wednesday, July 25, 2012 | Categories: Xenical

Having been told that we would get a delivery of Orlistat by mid-July, we are now told that September is likely to be the next delivery date for generic Orlistat from Teva. However, Roche (the manufacturer of Xenical) has a meeting scheduled with the European Medicines Agency and we are anticipating a positive outcome based on the news that Xenical stocks are flowing again in the US. Roche will need permission to get Xenical into the EU after its manufacturing problems, which now seem to be behind it. We anticipate a positive press release from Roche next week and then Xenical to start flowing again in August.

We are slightly surprised that Teva has not been able to get more stock into the UK and firmly establish its position with its licensed generic alternative to the branded version of Orlistat. This was a prime opportunity for Teva but at least we all know that the licensed generic version exists.

    Hi All,

I spoke to my Auntie again other day and she spoke to her close friend who works at a pharmacy in Rotherham. She said he says most places are getting small deliveries but are only giving it to people who have been on it a long time or really desperately need it due to a health condition. If you have been given a prescription for the first time (like myself) they wont give it to us because they need to deal with the demand of patients that have been on it for a while.

She also said that they are saying it should be fully available within the next four months,

Mand43pink: I wouldnt advise driving to other area's for it as i would think that they will only give it to there local patients,

Hello - just joined in to say I have been trying to get my prescription filled for 3 months now - East Lancashire. Several chemists in Blackburn and my regular one in Oswaldtwistle say they don't know when the supply will be available again - just keep trying!! As I am losing weight as an aid to relieving arthritis in my knees and ankles I wish I could get these tablets as I can't exercise or walk far . Have gone 'low-fat' but its very slow to show weight loss without exercise.

    Hi All,

im sort of contradicting what I said earlier, I cant believe it but I have just had a call to say my prescription is ready to be collected...after 6 months of waiting. hopefully a sign of things to come for all of us.

Fingers crossed it starts filtering back through.

Hi Chantelle were abouts are you ?

I have a feeling that some pharmacies give it only to friends because they say they didn't get any supply since February and I know they had some supplies from Teva, they just don't give it to new customers.

    HI,

I have had a reply from the suppliers that orlistat has now been given the go ahead to be produced. This means supplies will come in a few wks in dribs and drabs as they will be out as soon as they come in but Roche will give an update at the end of august as to where they are with supplies and expected "Normal" service to be regained.

This sort of looks like we should have some by end of august/september depending on demand!!

I am in Burnley Lancashire so if any one on here knows when some come in around my way please give us a shout smile

Thanks for that I spoke to pharmacist in asda today and he said that they have a pile of scripts waiting I asked about alli he say it's half the strength. He also said that if you buy oralistat of Internet you may not know what's in the tablets

Last time I went into our ASDA the chemist said he could take my prescription but anyone walking in in person would get priority over waiting prescriptions. Hmmm will be interesting to see what happens in your case. Anyway iv decided I'm going to set up my own business supplying the country. 'Orlistat from York' !!!!!!!!

    Hi chantelle,

I've deleted the other posts. There was some behind the scenes work being done on the main Patient site which might have affected things for a while. Sorry about that, things should be back to normal now.

If you or any others notice anything odd can you please send me a Private Message and I'll pass to the developers.

    Thanks,

    Alan
