Not Coping Anymore

Hello Ladies,

I noticed that since these symptoms started, that I no longer handle stress as well as I could before. I don't know if it's because my period is due or what but the least thing makes me upset to where I start feeling nervous and on edge really bad. I used to let very little get to me and now I feel like I just can't deal with anything remotely stressful. Have any of you ladies felt or feel this way?

Hi Jamie...i have found the same thing with me. I definitely don't do stress well anymore. And things that I would shrug off before really upset me and I don't recover as quickly. Its like my emotions volume dial has been turned up....i cry more...i anger easily...even rages which scare me. I know I am being irrational but don't care. I can sometimes have all emotions in one day...heck...I can have them all in an hour lol smile

      I am the same!

my grandmother (God rest her soul) told me that some woman can go over the deep end While going through the change of life. I thought she was exaggerating!

Well I need to apologize, I am sorry BaBa. You were right!

I can actually see where it could happen!!

      sad

Oh Janine that is so me. The rage was terrifying. It was like someone flipped a switch and I just couldn't control myself, I felt jumpy and shakey. I threw my keys across the table and hit the wall..I started screaming at the top of my lungs...I just don't know where it came from. I have never acted like that before. My mother and sister seriously thought something was wrong with me.

      Have to ask, you say:

"I know I am being irrational but don't care"

      In what way irrational?

      Thanks

Dear Jamie. I TOTALLY know how you feel hun. Pre-hrt, the silliest thing at work would have me panicking then overwhelmed with anxiety, palps, tears - in front of staff & customers - made it 100 x worse & embaressing. i even lost it with a manager, walked out & almost got myself a disciplinary suspension from work had it not been for my wonderful (male!!!) line manager coming to rescue me before i drove off. I found the hrt i started on 1/4/16 helped this immensly, & feel more in control of my emotions/anger/anxiety. I have however been off sick about 6wks after starting my hrt with another health problem, so I will face a truer test when i return to work to see if nearly 3mths into hrt I am better able to cope with the everyday problems & stresses at work (i love my job btw). but having to deal with my other health problems & being stuck at home off sick, I think I would be a mental wreck without the hrt. I hate to see ladies feeling this way as I know what it's like - you feel hopelessly out of control, your confidence plummets as you don't feel you can deal with "everyday" life/work & wonder if you'll ever be able to regain control. But hrt has probably saved me from losing my job & sanity so far. I would seek help from a specialist meno gp/nurse & consider going on hrt Jamie. You don't want to kiss goodbye to a decade of your life without the real you. xxx

Good advice looloo. I do hope things look up when you go back to work. What I've found is that the whole week before my bleed I feel awful. Do you? I was saying 5 days ago I felt quite an improvement. That is true but I'm finding the whole 8 days before my bleed I have a tight chest, palpitations, and a nervy body which tingles. One strange thing is with the burning mouth is have a nerve pain in my lower front tooth. It's a horrible sensation . It comes for a few hours then goes.

      YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT !

I have tolerated this for far too long until finally I had to do something!

I started peri at 41. Things were not getting better. I stared HRT about a year ago.

I am now 53, I wish I would of started sooner. Sad to say, I did kiss goodbye a decade of my life without myself.

I did fight the good fight but missed a lot through the process.

Hi Michelle. I haven't had periods for a while , just irregular light prolonged or short bleeds for last 2yrs, so I had to create a 28 day cycle when I started hrt. I have found around days 10-15 of cycle slight increase in night sweats, a few palps & little bit foggy ,but nothing like pre-hrt. I think like I said before when I'm better with other health & back in normal routine (feeling myself again) will be a truer picture, as I feel unwell at the moment anyway. Can they give you any treatment for the burning mouth problem Michelle ? that must be horrible. xxx

I'm under a maxofacial specialist. They took a biopsy 3 weeks ago. I get the results next Friday when I have another appointment. They checked my bloods which were ok. I had a special mouthwash but that didn't help. It's a way of elimination. They need to know what is causing it. I did read that menopause can be a time when women get it. It burns everywhere and my jaw burns and is stiff. I don't think I would wish this on my worst enemy.

Before I went on HRT my periods were light, only had it a day or two.

It is wonderful to hear that the HRT is helping you.  I am definitely where you were before, but I don't expect to try HRT primarily because I have Crohn's and some studies have shown that it can adversely affect that situation.  I do agree wholeheartedly about not wanting to kiss away a decade of life.

I've been considering seeing a specialist being as though I had to resign from my job because the anxiety was out of control. It has gotten a lot better and I don't flip out like I used to when it happens. I try to keep calm and convince myself that it will pass over. I really need to get back to work so I need to do something. I've never felt this way in my life and it's hard to deal with.

Michelle if you google for the website 34 menopause symptoms, burning tongue (plus mouth area if you read about it further) is on the list of meno symptoms. Thats a good site to read on. My irreg periods could last for weeks or just a few days - no pattern of when or how long but haven't been heavy in last couple of years, but I got dramatic pms symptoms with bleeds. I have also had the depo provera contraceptive injection since dec 12 which stopped my periods until the last 2yrs when everything started going haywire, so although hrt has fixed the irreg bleeding now, I wonder if I've actually started peri a couple of years ago rather than just about 6mths ago. who knows.... at least things are better now, that's what's important. Let me know how you get on with your next maxofacial appt. xxx

Thankyou Elizabeth. I have colitis,(flaring currently for other reasons) & am ok with hrt. Is it worth you trying a low dose hrt regimen like me with careful monitoring & not changing anything else at same time to see how you get on? Its such a shame you suffering with symptoms of meno like this when a trial on hrt may help you. It may be worth discussing with your doctor even if you can try the more topical versions. I use estrogen gel nightly on my thighs or upper arms, & take progesterone capsules days 15-26 of a 28day cycle. There may even be a progesterone part that you can have topically(eg patch, gel, cream) but your doc should know more. I feel such a difference on it, although night sweats are really the same, but I can cope with that now everything else seems to have simmered down. I can't remember Elizabeth if you still have your uterus/ovaries (talk to so many laides on here!) as hrt regimens are different depending on whether you still have your uterus/ovaries or not. I am not trying to push you at all, just if you haven't already discusses possibility with your doc because of your crohns it may be worth just discussing it with him/her. If it even starts to change your crohns symptoms - you could stop it. I just hate to hear of ladies suffering. xxx

Thanks for sharing about the colitis - sounds like our situations are similar.  I had my right ovary removed in April but still have the left one and my uterus.  Do you think it best to consult both my GI and gyn doctors or just the gyn?  It sounds like it could be worth a try.  Also, do you find that you have more trouble with your colitis since getting into peri?  I do.

Ironically Elizabeth, I think what's caused this current flare is in desperation, I took some ibuprofen/codeine tablets for 5 or 6 days on & off each day to help relieve pain in hip & hormonal headaches just so i could get through my work shifts as other pain killers were'nt helping. This sparked off gastritis for a week, then colitis flare followed & i have now been off work since mid may. The only other thing it could've been was stress at work due to peri symptoms & getting overtired, or a combination. I have been told by my IBD nurse it's likely the ibuprofen set it off. So indirectly, because of the hormonal headaches & what i took to relieve it has set my colitis off. The headaches have now stopped since being on hrt from 1/4/16. I do not feel the hrt directly affects my colitis, & has helped me maintain relatively positive thinking while I am ill. I think if I was you I would consult both your doctors & take in all they both say before making an informed decision. Certainly won't do any harm looking into it Elizabeth. xxx

That's interesting.  When I was diagnosed in 1996, my GI doctor told me to stop taking aspirin or ibuprofen.  I'm only allowed Tylenol.  When I had my surgery in April, my gyn prescribed hydrocodone for a certain number of days to be followed by ibuprofen.  I reminder her about the Crohn's, but she said the ibuprofen wouldn't hurt anything.  I ignored her and just did the hydrocodone and then Tylenol.  Tylenol isn't a great choice, of course, because acetaminophen can damage the liver, but I drank lots of water and stuck it out until the pain had improved.

I find that I flare when I get too stressed out, overworked, or just plain exhausted.  I've also had lots of anxiety with trying to figure out what to eat as peri has shifted things and I have more trouble with not flaring than before and tend to worry a lot about food.

I'll check with my GI and gyn doctors to see what they say about HRT.  I appreciate you for sharing your experience - so hard to juggle these two problems at once and having trouble finding anyone else who "gets it"!

I agree Elizabeth - its hard to juggle sometimes, especially when you need pain relief. Do let me know how you get on with your discussions with your docs in due course. xx
