One week using "Wet Ones" with Benzethonium Chloride
Posted , 128 users are following.
I have been using Wet Ones as recommended by Lynda79 (Clean eyes 4 times daily using 1/4 wet one) for one week
I can report the following.
Initial State:- Eye irritation/soreness/dryness including corneal ulcers, etc which I have had for over 2 months continually. Requiring washing approx 3-4 times daily with warm water, baby shampoo, eye drops etc..
When starting with the Wet Ones, I initially felt slight stinging around the rim of the eye, but this stopped after 24 hrs use.
After 3 days:- A lot of relief, maybe rinse eyes with just warm water if they felt dry.
After 7 days:- I have forgotten that I have blephoritus. Have to remind myself to clean eyes with Wet Ones.
I will continue to use the wet ones, now cutting down to 3x daily as recommended by Lynda79, and will update again next week. Hope this helps somebody, and many thanks to Lynda79 for sharing this.

I spoke to you a while back and you were the one who recommended these wetones.
I had blepharitis around January 2013... basically i believe what caused it was me staying inside for my room for few nights where i went to bed where i could not turn off the heat in my room. Basically it was like 85 plus degrees... the thing is it was winter time and i couldn't turn my heat off... i had turn on the heat b/c well its really cold. Do you think this could be possible? Also i have lot of acne as well so that might be a cause? I spoke to eye doctor last time and i was told i did have acne so that could be a cause or it could be allergy but they couldnt tell me what is the reason... they said could be many things.
Anyways after a few days i woke up with the worst eye pain ever. I waited for about 1 week or so to see if anything would get better or not but nope... same pain. Then saw eye doctor 10 day later i believe and i was told i got blepharitis which is something i never heard of before. I basically couldnt wear contacts for like 6 months i think. I did try but when i did, i could only wear it for few hours or minutes before the horrible pain. I used those eyedrops and used ocusoft lid scrub and the wipes. Eyedrops i only got small sample so i didnt use much of it. Ocusoft seemed to make things much better but after 1 week... it didnt seem to do anything. But i use it because at least it makes it at least somewhat better.
Well around December 2013, i found your talk about wet ones and tried it. The thing is when i used it for like the first week, it was amazing. I didn't have much pain anymore and i could wear contacts without much of a problem. The thing is as time went on... it was still pretty good. There were days where i woke up... no pain at eye whatsoever... no crust. But it came back in march 2014 or so but then as i used the wetone wipes ... i did it mostly 2 times a day... it was fine.
However, now my eyes are really painful. The thing is from reading your posts again.... im not sure im doing exactly what you are saying correctly. Example when you say you started 4x a day for the first week... i did it 3x only a day i believe... but how many wet one wipes do you use each day? I know you said you break them into 8 pieces but are you ripping it up yourself? Its very hard to break a wetones when you rip the small package out... i assume you use a scissor for that right?
Example if i were to use wetones twice a day, what i did was use a scissor and cut it in the middle... then i would either cut or break it into smaller pieces. So basically if i do it twice in one day, i only use one wet wipe a day. Is that wrong? How many wet one wipes you suppose to use a day if you do it 2x, 3x or 4x? Am i suppose to use 1 wet one each time? Thus 3 times a day, im suppose to use 3 wetones.
You say you break it into 8 pieces where you use 4 on each eye. First off, can you explain what you mean by you are wrapping each piece around your finger to do it? The thing is for me each piece is very thin so i would wipe my eyelid like imagine a very small tissue. Am i doing it right or wrong? Also can you explain how you wipe each eye with each of those 4 pieces? So you basically wipe the bottom eyelid from left to right with 1 piece... then do it again with another piece and thus never go left to right with one piece and do it again b/c that would be contaminating it?
So the other 2 pieces for each eye... you are wiping the top eyelid? Do you close your eyes when you do the top? Im confused now b/c i think i been doing it wrong. Because many times i would wipe my eyelid bottom one and right one with one piece and would go left to right in left bottom eye. Also are you ever wiping your whole eye such as if you do this, the watery stuff from the wetones would easily go into your eyes? I believe i do that or are you only suppose to touch the eyelids?
Also... how long does it take for you to do each time once you have 4 pieces each for each eye when you going to wipe your eyes? I assume its like 15 seconds max for each eye since you just wiping it from left to right once on the left bottom eye then left top eye with 2 pieces each for the top and bottom of each eye? Thing is earlier when i was doing this... i was doing each eye for like 45 seconds but that wouldnt be correct since i was wiping it left to right, right to left etc.... is that correct?
Also i just read you mentioned about a white towel and you use 2 white towels for each eye. Can you explain this? I never used a white towel.... all i did was use these wipes. Can you explain this and i really need to use a towel or it wont work? I just read this right now that you mentioned a towel.
I think i asked you this but you dont wear contacts right? I asked you last time if it was fine if i wear contacts while continue doing this and you said you probably wouldn't recommend it. Thing is i continued to wear contacts everyday... i hate glasses and contacts was fine for me b/c i didnt have much pain at all. But do you know any of the ppl who use wet ones who cured their blepharitis who wore contacts? If so... did they not wear contacts the entire time?

My Wet Ones came folded in individual packets. I opened it up and tore them on the fold line. It made long skinny strips. I wrapped each one around the fingertip. I used 2 on each eyelash area. I used a clean strip each time so that made for 8 sections each time I cleaned my eyes. That was 4 for each eye or 1 wipe per cleaning time.
I rubbed the lashes as I went across them. Like they itched which mine did. Using clean strips each time.
The wash cloths or face cloths are what you use 2 each. Each time you wash your face. A clean one for each eye. You do not want to reinfect an eye getting better faster then the other one. I, actually, read this online from a doctor too. This is just for normal face cleaning.
As for the contacts, does the solution kill staphylococcus? If not, you may be infecting yourself all over again. I am not sure but someone on this site may be able to help you as I don't wear contacts.
It seems a lot of people start this and then feel so good that they let up on it. It did take 3 1/2 months to kill this. Now, some people did do it only 2 times a day and still killed it. If you do kill it and then wear your contacts again and get it right back you will know for sure.
I hope I have answered your questions. If not, let me know and I will try again. You have to have a dogged determination to kill this. You do not want to use these wipes forever. Are you using the ones in the US in the Red Box? Those have the Benzethonium Chloride in them.
Let me know how you are doing and if any more questions as want to see you get well.

Actually the individual packs you are talking about... is it these packs? Because these were the ones i bought back in december 2013 and when i used it, it was great. Then i ran out after using it for few months.
Links removed
So each one is in a very small package like the ocusoft lid scrubs. I assume this doesn't make a difference right and its the same formula? The only reason i bought these were b/c i figure these were smaller and thus better b/c you could actually take these around with you so if eyes feel pain, i would take these with me and then wipe my eyes. The other one... its great if you only use it at home. But as you know, some times you get huge pain in the eye then you need this when you are outside. So i figure might as well get these.
Yea these are much smaller than the original ones i bought. Also i recalled i still used a scissor to cut it but i believe if i break it up myself, it still work. I dont recall seeing a dotted line but i think yes there was one where you could break it easily. Yea so with that one each had 15 long pieces. How many times would it take for you to use up 1 piece? I think i used up 10 travel packs thus 150 of these in like 6 months.
But the new ones i bought you basically have to cut it at least one time before you can break it into smaller pieces. Does that make sense?
When you rub the lashes, did you close your eyes when you do this? I only closed eyes when doing the top not the bottom. Also when you say rubbing it, you mean wipe it once from left to right and never wipe it again right? Then you use another piece and do it again from left to right on the bottom eye. Then do it 2 times with 2 different pieces on the top eyelids the same?
This takes very fast then right since you only wipe it once each time? So was i doing it wrong b/c i wipe it back and forth over and over for like 40 seconds or so?
Wash cloth or face cloth... im confused is this the wet ones or you mean u using your own wash cloth like a towel? Because im confused here as i thought when u do this, you only using the wetones... no towels at all etc.
As for the contacts, does the solution kill staphylococcus?
How would i know if it did or not? All i know is when i first started the wetones, it was working great i no longer had the pain anymore in my eyes. Its 100 percent i have that since i have blepharitis? My eye doctor i saw didnt tell me anything just blepharitis but again this was back in january 2013 when i got it. I didnt see another eye doctor b/c at that time i read every eye doctor will say same thing, its blepharitis so use baby shampoo. I think i used baby shampoo for few days before i quit it.
Im just wondering if anyone here has acne and that could be a cause? Also do you think anxiety could cause this? I have ocd but then again i had it ever since i was a kid. Could anxiety/ocd make this condition worst?
I just know that i started this back in mid december 2013. By the time it was early/mid january, i felt great and rarely did i have any pain or crust in my eyes... i had thought i was cured of this pain. But still i everyday maybe except 1-2 times forget to do it in the morning but almost always 2x a day. Another thing is i notice besides when my anxiety is bad during certain days... when im really stressed this seems to aggraviate it more. Do you think that is related a bit?
Well i have had very few probablys wearing contacts starting from
january 2014 till around march 2014 this year. But then it got much better but the last week or so, my eyes are really red. Not only that... there is lot of broken skin around my eyes in both areas and its not the eye crust from blepharits, you could clearly see the skin area around both eyes are broken. So last few days, i used these wipes a lot b/c of the pain but im thinking keep using it will aggraviate the area more. Do you know what i can do about this?
Also... right now its very hard to wear contacts. Another thing... once its late at night... im wearing glasses of course.. the pain gets bad where i can't really see well. Example im typing on the computer or on the phone and i cant see things clearly at all. The last few days this has been happening once its night time. Like i use wet ones or use tissue and put some water on it... basically i cant even stay up late anymore b/c if i do... i cant see things clearly on computer everything is VERY BLURRY. You ever had that or any advice on this?
Hmm now a bit confused b/c you saying the red box. The first wet ones i used was in a travel pack. These are in a box. So which ones did you use from one of the 2 links i posted?

The wipes in the US which are in a red box or package (larger format) have .3% Benzethonium Chloride in them.
The washcloths are just what you wash your face with. Use 2 so you don't reinfect your eye that is getting better. I use white so that I can put them in a bleach load. You could have gotten the Blepharits from washing your face if you have acne. You may need 3 washcloths so as to not infect yourself from either direction.
Honjon, on this site, had the eye problem so bad that he could not see TV for even an hour. He used the wipes in the UK with Benzalkonium Chloride in them and had success. Both wipes contain Quats. Google that to see how it works.
You could be reinfecting yourself with the contacts. You may have to kill this and buy new ones after all done.
You can order the wipes online from drugstore sites or Amazon or E-bay I was told.
I can only say what worked for me. Some of these wipes have a different ratio of the Quats in them. Check the ingredients.
Hope this info works for you.

How big is the box that the wipes are in? Its pretty small box right? Thats what im using now. Back then i used the wet one wipes in a package where each wetwipe was really big.
Im confused with washclothes. So you are using 8 of these wet ones and 2 washcloths one for each eye?
How big/small is the washcloth? Is it basically like a white towel such as you use to wash your face with but u use it specifically for each eye? So you use it right after the wipes? Im confused at this because i dont understand what you mean. Because if you wash face, you not suppose to use washcloth.
Well i use cetaphil cleanser to wash my face. Well yea that could be possible because of my acne.
Also the left eye is always worst than the right eye. Did u have this or notice anyone else similar such as one eye always worser than the other?
My eye problem is very bad recently. I basically look at a computer/phone or tv as well b/c everything is VERY BLURRY. I could watch but its extremely hard as its not clear at all. So i guess i have the same thing as Honjon then?
Do you know what honjon did to fix it or that person still have the issue? I basically cant watch tv or use computer either without it being very very blurry.

Yes, the box is little and individual packets of the wipes.
I use 1 wipe each time I cleaned my lashes. I just tore them into 8 sections so that I would have a clean section to wipe each eyelash area twice.
The washcloth is simpily for washing your face. You want to keep your eye area clean and not infect from another area of your face. That's all.
You can use the wipes 2-3 times a day. Some have had success using them only 2 times a day if you are not allergic to them.
Use whatever the doctor told you to use to wash your face. I just told people how I did it. A doctor even mentioned doing this online too so that you would not reinfect your eyes.
I had Blepharitis in one eye and I got it in my other eye. Dumb Dumb Me!
So be careful.
Honjon used the wipes in the UK (Benzalkonium Chloride). It is a Quat and killed his too as worked in the same manner.
Hope you get better soon.

It's great to see all the effort and information that you have posted up on the site .
And some most promising thing I've seen for a long time and is seeming like the last thing I can try on this planet .
I have terrible red and sore eyelids. Which also causes dry ness. I have mgd oil dysfunction and red eyelids so anterior blepharitis.
I'm a 32 year old male and have suffered for this for 14 years I've tried everything from IPL treatment, antibiotics (doxy) for years
block tear ducts, hot compressors, colloidal silver, Chinese herbal medicine, fasting, gluten free, sugar fee.
Nothing has ever really helped and eye drops provide only temp receive before agrivating it .
I'll post my progress.
Day 3 of 4 x wet ones wipes per day.
Conditions - sore red eyelids - no change

Please make sure to use the wipes long enough to kill the infection. Some have stopped too soon and it came roaring back.
I used the wipes 4 times a day for a week or so then went down to 3 times for the month. After that, I used them 2 times a day for 2 months.
They itched once or twice after that and I jumped on it with the wipes for a day or two and then it was gone.
Hope this info will help you.

Does anyone here know 100 percent what caused their blepharitis?
Because im thinking this one incident last year when i was in my room where the heat was on and my room was super hot... it was like 90 degrees or so and reason was b/c it was in the winter and i couldnt turn off the heat. So i basically went to bed for few nights in a row when my room was like a boiler room.
Do you think this could be the cause? i can't think of a reason how this happened. Because i did have acne for many months before that but could the heat caused this? I know i went to bed for few nights in a row where the room was like a boilerroom.

I then used wetones as i been using it since earlier this year but it seems like both of my eyes, i have lot of broken skin inflamed around my eyes. This isn't the crust on the eyelids like i had back when i started having blepharitis.
The thing is my lower eyelids are very red both left and right. Also my eyes are bit red and the area around each each is very sore.
The thing that worries me the worst is few days ago when im using my computer... note i use the computer all day and night...i noticed i could not see letters/numbers on my screen. Everything is extremely blurry... i then opened the tv and noticed this as well.
Then yesterday i used computer in the afternoon it was okay for a bit but then i could not see any letters/numbers at all on my computer. Im wearing glasses and everything is REALLY BLURRY that basically its like me looking at a computer screen where im not even wearing any glasses at all. Its been like this for a few days already. Should i be really worried?
Basically if im on the computer for a bit, i basically cant see words/letters at all and i never ever had this problem ever. Is this temporary? I had thought it was just 1 day or so but its been a few days like this already. Also i can open my eyes so why is this happening? I know back then when i first got blepharitis and it was really bad, i couldnt open my eyes much b/c of the pain and thus i couldnt even use computer much b/c of the pain opening my eyes.
Does anyone have any advice on this? Few days ago i also put some manuka honey directly on my lower eyelids both left and right for few hours then washed it off. I did this b/c i read about manuka honey and b/c since i had the blurrieness the day before, i decided to try the honey. I think some honey could have gotten in my eye but thing is i already had the blurriness before this the day before.
Does anyone know what i can do now? Im still using the wet one wipes but im very worried why i have this blurred vision when on the computer.

can you confirm for me the name of the wet ones. The ones I use are BENZALKONIUM Chloride. You have a different spelling.
Thanks for your information.

I used the wipes in the US which have .3% Benzethonium Chloride in them. They come in a red box of about 20 I think.
Benzalkonium Chloride is in the UK wipes and Honjon used them. Google Quats, that is what these ammonium compounds are called.
They can be purchased online. The blue have worked for some, such as Honjon.
Hope this info can be of help.
