One week using "Wet Ones" with Benzethonium Chloride

Posted , 128 users are following.

I have been using Wet Ones as recommended by Lynda79 (Clean eyes 4 times daily using 1/4 wet one) for one week

I can report the following.

Initial State:- Eye irritation/soreness/dryness including corneal ulcers, etc which I have had for over 2 months continually. Requiring washing approx 3-4 times daily with warm water, baby shampoo, eye drops etc..

When starting with the Wet Ones, I initially felt slight stinging around the rim of the eye, but this stopped after 24 hrs use.

After 3 days:- A lot of relief, maybe rinse eyes with just warm water if they felt dry.

After 7 days:- I have forgotten that I have blephoritus. Have to remind myself to clean eyes with Wet Ones.

I will continue to use the wet ones, now cutting down to 3x daily as recommended by Lynda79, and will update again next week. Hope this helps somebody, and many thanks to Lynda79 for sharing this.

Hello Lynda, Honjon and all on the site,

In the past 2 months I have had nothing but trouble with my eyes. I caught bacterial conjunctivitis and took the antibiotic drops BUT 1 week later the red eye apperaed again. Maybe I reinfected my self with makeup I'm not sure. But since that day I have had these conjunctivits symtoms on and off. I've had antibiotic drops about 5 times. Doctors useless. I now am on oral antibiotic, eye drops and told i most likely have blepharitis.... So I am so frustrated with this bacteria! who would think it would make your life such a misery!

Anyway, I see how helpful you have been sharing your stories I have now also bought wet ones. I just used it first time and felt 'clean' straight away! Soo I will update all on here as the weeks go by. I'ts nice to come to a place where others understand this Hideous  thing smile

Hi all, I've been searching the web for alernative remedies to help with blocked meibomian glands. I've suffered for over 2 years with red, tired looking eyes. My whites haven't been white for that entire time, even my eyelids were red. I looked as though I'd been crying, all the time. I saw the Wet Ones suggestion and decided to give it a go, as the warm compress and massage did absolutely nothing. I got some relief from bicarbonate of soda eye rinses, but it only lasted a short time and the redness remained.

I started to wipe my eyes/lashes with the wipes last Monday (12 days ago) and also bought the optrex drops with the same ingredient. Within 2 days, my eye whites were nearly white again. I carried on with the warm compress but found that my eyes remained red and sore, so I stopped that on the 3rd day. On day 6 I was able to wear eye makeup for the first time in nearly 2 years. Today, my eyes are white, no redness on my eyelids and provided I remove my eye makeup thoroughly and follow with a Wet Ones wipe, look as healthy as they used to.

I wasn't sure if this would work for me as my doctor said blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction weren't the same, but I'm so happy to let you know it HAS worked!

Can't thank you enough Lynda T.

    Dear Andrea and all,

Honjon had the oily problem and they say they are not sure what causes it.

Staphylococcus is the cause of blepharitis and the wipes (Quats, Benzethonium Chloride and Benzalkonium Chloride) kill Staphylococcus.

It does mention these Quats kill fungus and other things too.

It could be a Staphylococcus infection too.

As for the mascara, be sure and use 2 wands (buy throw away on the internet) one for each eye and never put a used wand back into the new mascara or you can re-infect yourself.

I used 2 wash cloths (white to put into the bleach load), one for each eye so as to not re-infect too.

I am so delighted to hear you are doing so well.

    Thinking of you,

    Lynda

      Hi Lynda,

I have been following this discussion since april 2014 and in May I have started to use wet ones UK with Benzalkonium Chloride. After 2 weeks I have had a big improvement of my symptoms. I have blepharitis sice 5 years it probably started as anterior blepharitis but after months of misdignoses by doctors it became a meibomian gland dysfuntion. I can tell you that thanks to you and others who have shared their outcome my eyes feels tremendously better. I do not know if I will be able to completely cure this condition as mine was left untreated for a long time because of uncompetant doctors. However the wet ones has changed my life so thanks again!!!

I have informed my doctor about this and she said that in desperate cases like mine she may recomend this treatment.

I am hoping that you and your doctor will succeed to make a commercial products like an antibitic so it can help many sufferers with this condition.

      Dear Margot,

If it is working it is probably a stapylococcus infection. I took over 3 months to kill it. The last couple of months I did it twice a day only. When I quit it itched once or twice and I just jumped on it with the wipes for a day or two. After that, it did not come back. But, I do use the throw away wands (1 now for both eyes) so that I put nothing into the actual mascara.

I am even using just one wash cloth for both eyes now.

Remember, there was a time when ulcers were incurable. The Dr. said it could be cured by an antibiotic. He was not believed. Too easy!  He infected himself and cured himself. Sorry, I am too terrified to do that.

      Once was enough for me.

There is an antibiotic that does work like the wipes.

Let me know if you want that info for your Dr.

It is not used on the eyes but could be in the future.

Problem is that a cure loses money for doctors in the US. Other countries may save money by having a cure.

I actually have trouble posting on US sites. Especially, when I put the staphylococcus cause and that the wipes kill that.

This may have to come from Europe. I will start sending the info to other countries next month. Going to try one more Dr. here.

So glad to hear how well you are doinh.

      Wish you well soon.

It is definitly a staphylococcus aureus infection in my case. I agree that for some people so cheap treatment is a threat as they are selling expensive products to patients during all their lives. My doctor told me that they are putting in the market new wipes for blepharitis but they are very expensives. She said that if I have good results she may recomend this simple solution if the Blepharitis is bacterial.

At the moment I am using the whipes twice a day. In addition some times I use tea tree anticeptic cream, this as well kills bacteria as well as demodex. But this stings a lot and I do not recommend to people. I used to use all the soft solutions but it just helped a little. It is only since I started to use this wipes and sometimes the tea tree cream which normally are not supposed to be used next to the eyes that I have had real relief. Now I do only use warm compresses once a week. I used to have very dry eyes as well but now I do not use any artificial tears anymore. I never wanted to use too much of artificial tears as I think the eyes should be forced to make its own tears. At one point my eyes where so bad that I had infections and corneal abrasions, I have as well eye floaters since 2 years. However it has slowly improved over time and tremendously since the use of the wipes. The problem I still have is blocked glands on my upper eyelids and I do not know if this will be cured by the wet ones.

I will do it for another 3-4 months and  i will let you know the result.

I wish I hve known about this 5 years ago I may have had a chance to prevent all the complications.

I am sure that if there was more people like you who take time to share their treatments or cures for all sorts of chronic conditions the world would be a better place.

      Take care.

      Dear Margot,

I would say the most important thing that my friend and I realized is that the problem was not in the eye but on the areas affected.

Honjon had the oily problem and had great results so don't give up.

The eye drops for lubrication that do not have preservatives are o k to use.  The ones with preservatives (some have BAK that is Benzalkoniumn Chloride in them) can cause eye damage over a long period of time. Steroids have that in them.

I was googling the preservatives in eye meds and found that info.

As for the glands, one girl lost her eyelashes and the Dr. said she had the problem for 20 years so they would not grow back in. She used the wipes and told me she gets compliments on her eyelashes now.

Just a little incentive for you. Her name is Jill.

Because it is a staph infection it takes time. We have that naturally on our eyes but this is runaway. I wash my eyes 2 times a day with soap and water. Can use an antibacterial soap too.

I think once you have dry eyes it doesn't go away. Mine is age related.

Thanks for all the nice thoughts and keep at it.

      Thinking of you,

      Lynda

      Hi Margot

I was interested to hear you say that you used to have very dry eyes and was wondering would you think the improvement was down to?

I had Lasik surgery in 2011 and have been suffering with dry eyes (and all the things that dry eyes can give rise to such as Blepharitis, sinus pain, sore throat) ever since, so am always very interested in hearing what has helped others deal with the condition.

      Many thanks

      Hi Steve,

I used to wear contact lenses and my eyes issues started after undignosed eye infection caused by contact lenses. The doctors said it was allergies but in fact it was staph infection. This has lead me to blepharitis which for 2 years was mild then I had a flu (probably swine flu) and after this I had sinusitis again untreated. Then horrible dry eyes I used to put lacrilub. Then sore throat ear infections ....For a year it was hell I was using eye drops, ointments, artificial tears, oral doxicycline and warm compresses 3 times a day, I  m as well taking Omega 3 supplements. Slowly it has improved, I never wanted to be too much dependant on artificial tears so I started to reduce them and as my eyes where less inflamed I did not need them very often. I am not sure if it was a natural progression of the disease or if the Omega 3 helped. Anyway if the inflamation goes down you will make more tears as the eyes get healthier. I definitely think that staphillococcus aureus is the cause for me, this has caused as well skin issues and I wash my face with antimicrobial and do not wear make up anymore. Now I do not use any artificial tears anymore and since I have used wet ones I do use warm compressesonly every 4 days. My eyes are now white the only issue I have is blocked glands which make my upper lid margin thikened and itchy from time to time.

      Take care,

      Margot

lynda79, thank you so much for telling us your experience with Wet Ones.  I am reading thru all the posts, not quite done yet but I am thinking...... If the eyedrops have  benzalkonium chloride as a preservative in an even higher percentage could we just use the drops on our eyelids?? I don't have wet ones here right now but I m desperate for some relief, thinking of trying this. What is your opinion? And thanks again for sharing all your information.

      Dear sniegy,

The wipes have .3% Benzethonium Chloride in the wipes in the US. Honjon and others have used the wipes in the UK with Benzalkonium Chloride and are doing the trick too.

The amount of preservative in the steroids is .01% Benzalkonium Chloride.

The thing my friend and I realized is that the meds should go on the problem site and not in the eye.

It would be better to put on the lashes then in the eye but may not be strong enough to kill the different kinds of staph.

What you said is what I told the Dr. and he said well some of it gets on the lashes.

Now for the bad news I found. Using BAK (Benzalkonium Chloride) in the eyes over a long peroid of time can cause eye damage.

Yet, if using steroids you have no choice. My Dad uses them. But you can make sure that your eye drops (for lubrication) do not have it in it. There are preservative free drops now in individual use that can have about 7 drops in each one. I use them.

These Quats are Staph killers. Google this word and see for yourself.

Just make sure you are not allergic to shampoo, detergents, fabric softeners, etc.

You can use the meds on your lashes, why not give it a try. Someone else said they did that and got some relief.

Let me know how you are doing.

      Wish you relief soon,

      Lynda79

Hi Andre, sounds like you've had good results from this. I'm on day 3 and struggling.

I'm also in NZ with chronic mgd. I've had this since 18, (14 years and it's all but taken me over cliff).

This thread is the most hopeful thing I've seen on the next for a while.

Would love to hear how your doing please?

      Hi Kaz

Yo say everyone says they need to have benzathorium chloride   in it but yours have   benzalkthorium chloride  in them??? That seems the same except for one letter.

I'm in the UK and mine have benzalkonium chloride in them...Is that what yours have.?

I bought mine in Boots the Chemist, they are the blue ones, original ones {In the USA they are in a red packet and the ingredient is slightly different  but it seems to work the same...I had it for 3 years and almost gone now} If you dont see the blue ones there ask...I had to ask

      Dear kaz5,

I used the WET ONES in the US with Benzethonium Chloride in them.

Honjon used the ones in the UK with Benzalkonium Chloride in them as Eileen said. Both did the job.

The relief is really quick. I used them 4 times a day for about a week and then down to 3 times a day. After that, it was 2 times a day for 2 months.

You can wear mascara and kill the Blepharitis too. It involves throw away wands and new mascara. Let me know when you want that info.

Be sure and use 2 wash cloths when you clean your eyes so as not to re-infect your eyes.

The thing I learned from this experience is that the killing of the Blepharitis is done on the outside of the eye, not in it.

Hope this info helps you and just make sure you are not allergic to detergents, shampoos, handwipes or even spermicidal gelly. They (the wipes) have lanolin and some are allergic to that too.

      Wish you relief soon.

      Hi Lynda

Could you please say where online you were able to purchase these wipes? I am in New Zealand and cannot find them anywhere here.

Very curious to see how this works.

      Thankyou

      Hello,

It's been one week using wetones 4 times a day and it's really helping. I still have something in my left lid that still a bit swollen, I'm wondering if someone has experienced it, it's sore spots, as if I had a sty that's not resolving... I wonder if there's a mix of infections here and if so and someone has experienced anything like it, what have you done. Thanks for all involved here and specially to you Lynda and your friend and her mom who got this Benzethonium Choride going!

      Dear Nicky,

Saw the post about e-bay and amazon. I wil mention drug store sites too.

      I am in the US.

Just make sure you are not allergic to shampoos, handwipes, detergents, fabric softeners or lanolin. If not, give the wipes a go as they kill staphylococcus. When I looked up Bleparitis it mentioned one cause was Staphylococcus.

      Wish you relief,

      Dear Veronica,

Google the causes of styes. If it is a staph infection you may be on the right track and just need to keep at it.

I looked it up once, for the life of me, and can't remember what it was. It means so much more if you look it up for yourself too. You will not forget as you have the problem.

      Thanks for the kind words.

I was told I have blepharis 5 months ago during my regular eye exam. I was told to use warm compresses and baby shampoo. This made it worse. My lower lids lash line was itchey with tiny red sores (looking in a 10x mirror). My upper eyelids would also swell, and I was losing my lower eye lashes. I was doing compresses 3/4 x a day.  I couldn't wear makeup anymore.  Every time i tried my eyes would either tear, itch, or become so dry that the tear drain area would burn if I tried to read or focus for to long.       I found Lynda's posts about wet ones and they have worked for me.  Thank you, thank you.... After using the wipes for one week I thought I was cured.  I didn't use the wipes the next week.  A big mistake,  came back much worse. I have been using the wipes steady now since mid June following Lynda's instructions. At this point I wipe morning and  night.  If I forget one morning I'm ok.  If I forget two mornings my eyes bother me.  I do notice that my eyelashes are growing back. It starts out looking like I'm getting a sty.  After I wash with baby shampoo on Q-tip and hotish water , use wet wipe, the redness of the sty will fade and I see in 10x mirror that a lash is coming.  I am able to wear makeup more, but not every day yet.  I use disposable wands as per Lynda.  I scrape my shadow into a paper cup and use a wet brush to apply as eye liner. I wash the brush before and after each eye.  I am very cautious about hand washing and keeping germ free stuff away from my eyes.  My problem is taking the makeup off, or if I have it on to long my eyes start to bother me more.

Also I have noticed that if my lids are swollen and I take a Motrin which is an anti inflamitory the swelling goes down.  But I also used warm compresses also.

      Dear NIcky,

You can get an online drugstore in Australia. You can get throw away applicators too for eyeshadow. They look like a cotton bud (cuetip US) except flat on one end and sharp on the other. I used dark eyeshadow for eyeliner.

      Sorry I missed this question.

      Hope this helps out.

      Dear June,

A suggestion. Try and use the wipes at a different time then when you use heat or washing the eyelashes. You really don't need to wash with baby shampoo as the wipes take care of everything. The heat could be opening up the area too much and causing an irritation when you use the wipes. You can buy throw away eyeliners too. My daughter just sent that info to me but I still use the ones from the drugstore. If you are using a a brush, you need to clean it with a wipe too. You could be infecting yourself again. I use a warm cloth on my eyes in the morning as the Dr. said it gets things going. Just don't use wipes right after.

      Hope this helps you.

      Hi lynda79

i am so happy about finding your posts about wet ones on this forum and other sites.  Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.  The wet ones have helped enormously especially since I thought I was doomed for life.  Usually my weeks are good feeling great.  Then I have a small relapse and it usually happens after I cry, or  after taking my makeup off.  I sometimes thought I was over doing it in the cleaning process when the flare up would happen, heat compress, baby shampoo and then the wipes.  But also that is how I am taking the makeup off before bed.  I will use your suggestion I won't use a wipe right after the hot water compress or when I wash my eyes with baby shampoo. I will wait an hour or so.  I have been washing my eyeliner brush with anti bacteria soap.  I will start using a wipe on that also until I can find disposable eyeliner brushes.  Thank you for your suggestions I greatly appreciate them.

      Dear June,

You will have to buy new eyeliner too. Your brushes can reinfect your eyes.

Someone asked me if it came back and I thought not but my daughter reminded me of the time (I had forgotten) that when I killed it I started using my mascara the old way (double dipping). I had some itching and used the wipes immediately and then bought new mascara and never used it the normal way again. I always use a throw away wand but one for both eyes. Somehow putting the wand back in the mascara is a trigger for me. Makes the staph grow or something. I have never had the problem again. I also, use throw away applicators for eyeliners too. Never double dip anything and never the problem to arise so far.

I never used the baby shampoo after I started using the wipes. I think it dries out the eye and the wipes are drying too. Good thing I have daughters to remind me as has been quite a while now that I have not had the problem.

Thinking of you and wishing you well soon.
