Open Myomectomy

I am just over 4 weeks post open myomectomy and was wondering how others have recovered. The scar is still swollen and sore which I expected however at times I get what I can only describe as sharp "stabbing" pains. These seem to be more from inside my body rather than from the scar. Is this normal? I'm not due to see my GP for another week so just wanted to check with others who may have gone through the procedure.

    Hello lovely ladies,

Thank you for sharing your experiences, this site has helped me a lot with my pre and post myo journey so I would like to share mine as well.

I had abdominal myo 3 wks ago for 2 intramural fibroids (4cm & 12cm). Surgery lasted about 3-4 hours and I woke up briefly afterwards to hear "it went well" and fell back asleep. Recovery went well, mild to no pain, only had to have blood transfusions twice. The next morning I was asked to stand up and hold my head back, it was hard but doable. Catheter was removed (no discomfort) and I had a suction tube draining blood from the uterine cavity.

I was moved to post op same morning and from then, had to move around by myself as I had to pee a lot due to all the IV fluids I was receiving. My dr said I should only take soups, no solid food allowed but a nice nurse kept giving me solid food  and insisted i need to eat well. This was a mistake as I paid for it days later when I finally had a bowel movement. Had to eventually use a laxative.

The suction tube was removed on the 3rd day and was not as bad as I expected it to be. Peeing was fine, only mild discomfort when its about to end. My back hurt a lot from bending while shuffling about so I had to rest a lot. I got discharged after 4 days, a friend picked me up and she was very careful driving me me home.  I had no pain bending over and by 6 days post op, I could stand/walk straight but still shuffling about. I had my stitches removed one week post op, my dr cut one end, went to the other end and said "take a deep breath" then pulled it gently. She was done before I could blink twice.

So, here I am 3 wks post op, I stay alone and I've been coping far better than I thought I would. I also have the "pouch" above my incision and I'm hoping it goes away. I've not had to use painkillers after I got home because the main discomfort is feeling like I have a ton of bricks in my lower abdomen and the need to sit down after i walk for some minutes. However, I started having the stabbing/stinging pains a few days ago at several times during the day and whenever I want to pass gas. I am using Calendula cream for my incision area after I shower everyday. I will be having my check up in 3 weeks and I am hoping I will at least be able to walk well as I will be going back to work.

Do you still have the "ton of bricks" heaviness in your abdomen? I think you're the only one I've seen talk about this so far. It's such a pain!

Thanks for sharing. ... today marks one week since my surgery..... my family member died suddenly on day 4 of my surgery and the stress has taken a toll on me.....

My abdomen is swollen and I'm afraid I have hurt the wound Internally... part of the incision was red as well ... trying my best to stay calm but it's not easy.....

Wish I knew how much pain was normal. ... sent the doctor a picture of the cut and I was asked to monitor it and dab it with rubbing alcohol. .. also, I was on a week of antibiotics and that just finished ..... praying next week gets better....

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss and the difficulty you're going through. The first week is really quite painful and tbf I was still quite heavily on the Percocet. I'm now 4 months post and my abdomen is still swollen. I've read it takes at least 6 months for the swelly belly to go down.

I am 7 weeks post op (bikini line incision) and I have been experiencing this weird heaviness in my abdomen like I have a ton of bricks in there and as the day goes on, the heaviness extends to my shoulders and arms and legs. Is anyone else feeling this way? How long did the feeling take to go? I've also had pulling and pinching sensations in my scar from my stitches that refusing to dissolve. Did anyone have dissolvable stitches?

    Hey everyone,

I am 8 days post op. I had a an 8cm fibroid removed via open myomectomy. Initially when I woke up the pain was quite bad which the anaethetist was very apologetic for. They used ketamine to get my pain under control and ended up putting me on an infusion of it. It made me feel very nauseous and faibt when I tried to mobilise the next day. So I got rid of that day 2 in the afternoon and only ended up getting rid of all my attachments (catheter, drain) on day 3. Like a lot of people have said I feel very easily tired.

The best advice I can give is to keep bowels moving, once I got that going my abdominal discomfort settled so much.

Options are pear juice, prune juice, movicol (drink), stool softener tablets... also peppermint tablets help to pass gas.

Also I have the same sensation of discomfort when urinating. I believe women also feel like that after cesarean sometimes, I guess our bladder has been handled, it had a catheter emptying it and we have stomach muscles under repair which would usually support everything! It is starting to improve just after a week.

One thing I am getting today is some horrible vaginal area pain, it almost feels like a spasm... anyone else experienced that?

And yes I also have the heavy feeling. Our abdominal wall needs to repair, I was seen by a physio before surgery who advised that you try and stand as tall as possible once you start walking (not easy) and to try and draw the tummy in for 5 seconds a time after a couple of days and then as you stand and whilst walking.

This thread was helpful to me prior to my op and so I am haopy to join :-)

Hi. I am 10 weeks post op. Had an open vertical myomectomy. Had about 43 removed. Scar has healed well with a bit of keloid forming. First two weeks we quite difficult. Bt taking things easy helped quite a lot. I'm doing very well now jux a bit of pain in the incision wen I sit for too long. My main issue is i'm still quite bloated n swollen. My abdomen isn't as hard as it was b4 the op bt its almost the same size😭. Does anybody noe weda it will improve over time? Or is der something I need to do to get my tummy flat again. I've been discharged from gynae clinic too.

Hi it may sound daft but 10 weeks is still early in recovery tme.  Having had a vertical incision for my myomectomy and a complicated op i would say you gotta give yourself 6 months to recover.  I found my tummy went down once i started walking for exercise approx 45 mins a day.  I still look pregnant but nowhere near as bad as it was.  Abdominal exercises to tone ur tummy muscles will help.

I am nearly 11 months post-op and still get the occasional twinge in my tummy but i can lift heavyish weight again now and travel on public transport without hanging onto my tummy!

Be patient your body is still healing and good luck

Hi raquel please see my post above to gifty.  We are all different but i would not fully take on what the doctors say about 6 weeks.  I had pain for months that would stop me in my tracks!  But some people are fine after a cople of weeks.  I say give yourself 6 months for recovery but yu will be surprised how much better you feel after 8-12 weeks.

You will have to be patient with yourself while your body heals.

Hi guys! I'm new here! It's been 3 months since I had my vertical abdominal myomectomy op and I lost a whole stone!! So my fibroids was huge! I'm still having heavy periods. In fact it's even gone WORSER after my op. The pain is UNBEARABLE! I'm going through 6-7 sanitary towels a day, heavy bleeding that I cannot control anymore and very big thick clots :-( I'm wondering if anyone is in the same position as me? Or who have experienced this? Will it get better? Cuz I want to get out there and get a job but I feel my periods are holding me back because I can't leave the house! I've been given some medication to stop my periods but they told me it's to harmful to take them more than 10 days. Now I'm on the pill to sustain the bleeding but I'm still abit heavy. My nurse has emailed my specialist who performed my surgery about this and I'm waiting to hear back from them. I feel alone in this and getting fed up.Now I'm having sharp pains down below and pain killers don't even touch it. That's why I've resulted in to coming on here to see if I'm not the only one going through this.

I'm 3 days post op myomectomy vertical. Was wondering what was your full recovery length - should I be walking a lot 3days after?

      Hi

We are all different and it will depend on how much 'work' they had to do.  At three days i was still just walking round the house once i was home from hospital.  Just do what your body allows you to do and do not push through pain.  If you are getting shooting or stabbing pains then rest.  I am now 13 months post surgery and feel great but it was a slow process, much slower than my GP seemed to think it should be.  I still cannot jump up and down in aerobics classes without discomfort.  I would say it took 6 months before i was feeling like myself again but i had 7 huge fibroids removed annd he had to reconstruct my womb!

Wish you well in your recovery and be patient with yourself.

      Velda
