Open Myomectomy

I am just over 4 weeks post open myomectomy and was wondering how others have recovered. The scar is still swollen and sore which I expected however at times I get what I can only describe as sharp "stabbing" pains. These seem to be more from inside my body rather than from the scar. Is this normal? I'm not due to see my GP for another week so just wanted to check with others who may have gone through the procedure.

I had mine done in Sep 2016 (c section type cut) due to large fibroids which was sticking out my right side very noticeable.

After op I complained about right side pain around the cut, the Nurse keep saying it's the side the drain was on so don't worry.

2 days after my release I was back in with an infection the place I keep telling them about.

I get so much pain on my right side also look 6 months pregnant which I can't stop the swelling and both my ankles especially my right one keep swelling and painfully and large hives over my legs.

Having heavier bleeding and from back passage gained 3 stone, all which my consultant said has nothing to do with Op, even tho it all started after my Op.

I'm so fed up with the beer belly look especially being an ex professional athlete, cutdown on food intake also, no help from consultant who I still have not seen himafter he did op 😢😭

    Hello everyone

I just had my open myomectomy six days ago. My incision is horizontal and about 10 cm long. That is the least of my worries now, just happy the monsters are out. The biggest one was about 5.5 cm, there were about six of them.

I am getting stronger everyday, my walk is better as well. The pain is also not as bad as day one. My biggest challenge to date is getting up and getting seated. I also can't walk upright as yet. I take short walks and try to lengthen them daily. Bath time is also tricky as I cannot get into a tub as yet, I have to keep water away from the wound while showering. My loo visits have also increased since coming home three days ago, I'm not sure uf this is because of the op. My diet has not changed by the way. Lastly, I am sleeping like they do in hospital, only with loads of pillows, can't toss and turn as yet.

I am only expecting my period in two weeks' time and hope it will bring no pain, no clots and maybe just be three days long.

I am 36 with no kids as yet, hope to start as soon as I am well enough.

This was just a short record of my journey with myomectomy, I hope someone else will take something from this.

May God heal our wombs and hearts, we will get there!

Hey ladies! I had a myomectomy (9 fibroids were removed) about a week and a half go and I’m feeling a lot better. The first week was tough. I didn’t realize how tired I would be doing things as simple as showering would take so much energy. I’m also very swollen still under my incension which I’m glad to see is normal. Moving around is a lot easier so I take it one day at a time.

I had a myomectomy on 9/15/17. It has only been a little over 2 weeks, but I was hoping to be a lot further along by now. All of your posts have helped me feel a lot better (that it is not just me that seems to be taking a long time to heal). Co-workers have lead me to believe they had family members that have had similar procedures that were good to go after a week??? I have never been off work this long, and wanting to go back as soon as I can, but also scared as well?

I've heard many people say that once you go back, and you do start hurting, then you are basically out of luck as far as the short term disability/FMLA goes. Also, as I have read through many of your posts, I fear I would hurt a lot, and possibly hurt my insides if I did return to work, If I am being honest, I am still hurting waaaay too much to return to work - but just not a person who likes to sit around, lol.

My outer incision was glued, the Dr. told me to spray hydrogen peroxide on mine, and my suture has never been covered. This is sort of a gross question, but has anyone else's incision seemed to have a green discharge - as in infection (sorry I know that is gross)? Also mine itches and burns quite a bit? Also from everything I have read, the glue should have all come off by now (16 days out)?

    Any tips? Thanks so much!

      So mine was 9/21/17

      And with regard to work

I'm a substitute teacher who is scheduled months in advance. Each week I feel horrible calling to say I'm not ready but as someone said this was major surgery.

I had ten all between 3 and 4 centimeters and I have 5 small incisions includ8ng the belly button but what I'm learning is , it is the placement of the incisions that is making it hard for me to recover fully. I use the area to do everything and so simply moving around exacerbates it. So I have to force myself to remain patient and listen to my body. More than once I've gotten out of the house and thought oh ok I'm good. Then I get so tried I'm flat for two days. So I hear you.

About the discharge, no but yes to itching which I attribute to healing.

I'm 3 weeks out today, and still hurting. It could be though because I have two autoimmune diseases, and am overweight and out of shape - so I'm sure I would probably heal slower then some.

Ffion28, I can totally relate with the stabbing pain though, and it does seem to come from inside. Mine has gotten better as far as that goes in the last week though.

However I did something really stupid last night and hoping this advice may help someone else. My grandson took off running and I grabbed him & picked him up out of instinct. The minute I did it, I thought, "Oh my gosh, what have I done!" I had pain that just kept increasing right in the center of my stomach.

It is the next day and I'm still in bed with pain, so I highly recommend not lifting anything heavy. I am suffering for it today.

Also I have a question for the group ? Has anyone had any issues with their glued suture? I have done exactly as the doctor indicated and mine seems to be infected now?

Wow everything you describe is the same for me.

I am just four weeks out and am feeling the same sensations. I have not had infection in glued incision but I'd suggest if you think you do wash with anti bacterial and use a anti bacterial ointment if you can't get to your doctor. Thanks for sharing.

Just 3 weeks postop and he lingerie well thank God. Has 10 fibriods removed with horizontal incision. Had photos taken as reminder cos one was as huge as a 6 months pregnancy and distended my uterus and bladder. It covered more than half of my belly and didnt bother me much until it started affecting my bladder seriously. Scan only saw 3 but during surgery doctor removed total of 9 or 10. Just glad I'm free now and instantly lost 5kg (yay). Scar is completely dry outside just little pains when I sit for too long inside. Also on the anniversary of my surgery this past 3 weeks, I feel a strange pain maybe it's a psychological reminder of the moment I was cut open but it's been like that for 3 weeks now. Has this happened to anyone before? I've had my period normal although with serious cramps the first day which I'm not used to but pain med took care of that. The only other discomfort is my scar itching especially at night, drives me crazy sometimes cos I can't really itch the scar fireclay but around it. I know it's cos it's healing well but I'd love to know if there's anything one can use to minimise the itch. Wall fine, eat well and nap a lot these days can't do any strenuous stuff otherwise u feel the pull. We all heal differently depending on genetics. Wish everyone all the best.

    Hi ladies,

I hope you are feeling better after the OP. I had my myo surgery 3 weeks ago, my horizontal incesion is dry and itchy with some pain coming from inside when I set and stand or when I turn from side to side during sleeping. I'm sorry to ask this, but when are we expected to be able to start relationship with our husbands? I'm a bit embarrassed to ask my doctor about this 😳.

    Take care and stay blessed.

Hello everyone! Im scheduled for an abdominal myomectomy on 10 May. Just 10 days shy of my one year wedding anniversay😶 I'm really nervous as this is my first major surgery. The Saline ultrasound showed 7 fibroids. Did anyone notice hormonal changes? What is an expected time frame for someone to stay with me one week post op?

I just had mine Tuesday. Soneone defiantly needs to stay with you. I think the worst thing i could have did was come home🤦🏾. Don't think cause your home you can do stuff and move around more😒. Do what you did at the hospital if you relaxed mainly than relax at home.bI was feelong great when i left now i feel horrible. You need to take it easy do what you did in the hospital RELAX. IT well be really hard getting of from the bed espacially at home. Just take TAKE YOUR TIME!!!! Even if you felt great leaving the hopital. Try to figure out which is the best way to get in bed and to get up. I have not found a good way. felks terrible getting up my stomach hurts theres pulling when there never was. Need a break I'll give you more info later

You will be fine. I had mine on March 1st, had 5 removed. I was so nervous too, it was my first major surgery too. I literally drove myself crazy researching. Honestly once that anesthesia hit you won’t remember anything. It’s like a gap in time. You can see my previous post about my experience in detail.

I would say try to walk as soon as you can for a little bit, like the next day. I pushed myself to do this as it helps with recovery. It will be hard and it will hurt but walk a little bit in your room (WITH HELP) once you stop feeling light headed. Do the same when you get home. By week 2 I was walking around the house and lay down when I needed, and off my pain meds. I am now week 3 pretty much back to normal. My Dr is stunned. I believe walking helped me. But listen to your body!
