open wound after hemorrhoidectomy

Hello All,

I had a hemorrhoidectomy 5 weeks ago. This has been the most painful, challenging thing I have ever gone through. It has completely changed me as a person. I am completely depressed and anxious all the time. I am healing, but during my first BM I blew open one of my incisions. I had a giant, gaping open wound. it has gotten much smaller, but just when it starts to feel better, I have to poop again and it opens back up. Has anyone else experienced this? My Dr. will not give me a time frame for how long I will feel like this. I am desperate for my normal life back, or just to hear something positive. any words would be appreciated.

I’ve had a hemorrhoidectomy and it was also one of the worse experiences in my life, I would refer this surgery to no one unless absolutely mandatory, it is a horrible recovery and every time you think you may be getting better something else occurs,  after my surgery I had to return to the emergency room 3 more times because of so much blood loss, the pain medication they give you makes you constipated so your first bowel movement will be hell literally, I recommend this to no one it is depressing and way to much you won’t be fully recovered for about a month

My first surgery was Jan 26th.

At 4 weeks I developed stenosis and had to go back to surgery.

I am doing the same thing you are as far as wound  x2 reopening after having bowel movements.

I agree this is the worst surgery and recovery I have ever experienced.

My doctor told me this week that I could have pain for 6-9 months.

It’s funny how before my first surgery I was looking at a two week recovery.  I’m going to try to go back to work this Monday because I’m depressed and about to go stir crazy at home .

My surgery was Jan 26th and I also experienced what you are describing.  I was down and depressed and did not want to leave home for fear of having a bowel movement and not know it until the razor blade feeling occurred .  At  4 weeks post surgery I had to undergo my second surgery due to stenosis ( narrowed rectum where I was hardly able to pass stools).

I too thought I would never get over the surgeries but to give you a little hope it does get better .

I was off work from Jan 26 th until 2 weeks ago due to my rectum /incisions doing exactly as you describe.

I will say if I do not keep regularly take my stool softeners ( I use Miralax twice daily and drink lots of water and eat fresh fruits and vegetables to help keep stools soft otherwise if they start getting too firm not only do I have increased pain but I had repeated tearing as well.  It is a long horrible recovery but as I said earlier keep hope it will get better.

I did lots of tub soaks during the healing period which seemed to help with discomfort.  Best wishes for a speedy recovery for you .

I had my op 6 days ago. Surgeon removed 4 hemorrhoids, but I don't know whether it's all external or not. First day when narcosis reaction finished, I feel a lot of different types of pains with my anus. Requested painkiller several times and doctor did two different injesctions on me but it didn't help at all. This was most horrible night. I couldn't sleep until 8am. But in the morning same injection released my pain luckily. Then next challenge came. On day 3 I did BM and it was extremely terrible. I never had such pain before, hope I will never feel this pain again. Before surgery I started to eat very less to prepare light stools but stool comes out at least one a day. I can say pain of BM is getting better day by day. But as others mentioned, after BM 2-3 hours requires to feel better with my ass and still bleeding with every BM. Today I just thought about bleeding and started to worry about it. After reading all those posts, I feel better that my bleeding is really not a serious issue at this stage. Your posts helped me a lot. Now I feel I'm not only who is suffering with this terrible surgery :-)

Don't be worried about the bleeding but try to keep up your diet with fiber. Drik water and natural juicies as much as you can. U can't do nothing to th BM either.

Im in my 13 day post op and still not recovered completely. I thin i need another 2 weeks to be in the shape i was pre op.

      Hope you get better.

      Cheers

Thank you. I will follow your recommendation fiber+water. I wish you quick recovery and strength. BTW, Dr told me to use suppository 2 times a day for 5 days. But I can't have suppository to anus, it's so painful. Do you guys did this?

Suppository right after OP is a bit on the painful side, but you have alternative creamy medicine. I am regularly using it, it makes me THINK I'm doing better. Notice you have to keep the area clean all the time and warm baths will help you a lot. Use sterile gauzes, and try to change them 3-4 times a day since first 10 days you'll probably have a bit of bleeding.

      Best of luck

I knew it! I knew suppository after op is not really convenient way! Thank you. You saved my day, coz I felt that something wrong with me. Now I see it's really painful for others too.

Yes, I'm using ointment from Himalaya and washing my downside many times a day. Like I'm now living in bathroom xaxa. Hope my pain will be gone at least after 7 days. I really hope. Until then I need to be strong enough to fight with this pain.

No way would I attempt to use a suppository!I had this surgery 6 days ago and just came home from the hospital a few hours ago! I had a very skilled and compassionate surgeon who admitted me after the procedure and kept me comfortable all week with IV pain meds. I'm on meds at home now and I'm in bed, getting up only to use the restroom or to take a sitz bath. The pain has been the worst pain I have ever experienced, and I've had several major surgeries and two 9 pound babies without the benefit of medication...but this? Lord have mercy! I had to do it because I kept bleeding and getting admitted to the hospital every few weeks, which gets costly and is inconvenient. One thing I can recommend using is Dibucaine Ointment because it's a Godsend when it's time for a bowel movement. Hoping and praying for no complications and for a swift recovery...not only for myself, but for everyone going through this.

Hope you will recover very soon and your pain will be released. After a week I felt much better. Today is my 19th day after surgery. Now I feel almost normal person. No pain at all except very little pain with BM. Bleeding almost stopped. Sometimes it`s itching because healing process is going on there. Now I need to wait to shrink this strange skins around my anus.

Has anyone tried sugar for inflamed hemmorroids . The colorectal doctor I saw said it works so I looked into it and found an article about put table.sugar on a 4x4 to reduce edema in hemmorroids . the article also mentioned the used of nitrate oxide donors which are smooth muscle relaxer such as nitroglycerin. Ignore research need to be done in this area because nothing relieves the pain of hemmoroid and surgery is not a good pain relief option. Not sure of the side effects of nitroglycerin if your not having chest pain other than a severe head ache, I am not even sure a doctor would prescribe this as I never met a doctor that takes the pain from hemmorroid serious. But I end up missing at least 2 weeks of work every year because of hemmorroids . Any pain relief suggestions ?

I think hemorrhoids suppository helps to shrink hemorrhoids faster even external. Also painkiller suppository helps to release the pain. Those suppositories helped me a lot of time until my external hemorrhoid stucked outside of anus 3 weeks ago and I went for surgery. I recommend you to see doctor in any case.
