Ovarian Dermoid Cyst - Very Painful!!

Posted , 124 users are following.

I started having pain in my lower left side in October of last year, it wasnt too bad so I didnt go to the doctors until january as I thought it may go away. I suspected I may have a Cyst and told the doctor and he refered me for a scan. I had a scan in mid Feb and I was diagnosed with a Dermoid Ovarian Cyst, it was about 3.5cm. I had another scan the other day and it has grown to 5cm. I have been refered to a gynocologist and been told that its going to take 20 weeks. I went back to the doctors because its causing me a lot of pain, but he said just to take pain killers (which doesnt really help) Iv been getting really really tired lately and doctor thinks that it could be related to the cyst.

The pain is getting me down, today I was in agony, I had a really sharp pain and I couldnt move, I was in tears. Im not going to be seen for another 4 months at least and I dont know what to do! Im worried its going to grow bigger.

Has anyone else been through similar experiences? How can I relieve the pain, Iv tired pain killers and warm baths but nothing works. Im only little and worried about how big the cyst is going to get, how quickly do these things grow? Mine got 1.5cm bigger in 5 weeks, so Im hoping it might stop for a bit!

Thank you

hi I can sooo relate I have had lower left pain pain for 4 years, doctors have been treating it has thought its coming from my back but everything they have tried has failed like epidural injections, medial nerve block, ryzotomy, physical therapy, water therapy, chiropractic, acupunture, and none of it worked, so this last dr said you know you have gone down this back path for 4 years I think we need to look internal for your back pain so did pelvic mri came back 2.5cm left ovarain cyst,1.4cm fibroid within the uterus ugh could this be the real cause of my back pain, in sept 2012 I had mri and suspecious 4cm cyst on left ovary had ultrasound showed nothing ugh I said that to this last dr and he said the pelvic mri gives alot better picture of the female organs!!! so how are you doing now? I have dr appt tomorrow with my local family clinic probably have to be referred to a gynecologist.I so hope I can have this all removed and be pain free, my pain is when I sit, I sit with ice pak otherwise I cant stand it.

Hi there, I am 50 yrs old and have a dermoid cyst on my left ovary. Had my consultati on last week and was told that they wanted to remove both of my ovaries & fallopian tubes, even though the right one is healthy. Naively, I thought they would just remove the cyst!! I am in the early stages of menopause and wanted to find out the affect this will have on my body as after surgery I will no longer naturally produce eostregen. The alternative is to leave the right and insert a marina coil, but I am already steralised! I was also told that as it will be key hole surgery, recovery will only be two weeks, however after reading these posts, it seems recovery time is longer. I am feeling very confused but need to make a decision as I have now received my pre op assesment appointment and the consultant said this would happen two weeks prior to the surgery. Any help would be appreciated.

I can understand your dilemma and I would advise you to read the information, on the Internet, that talks about the impact that the removal of both ovaries can have upon a woman's long term health.  I had an ovary and fallopian tube removed 18 months ago, and the surgeon planned to remove both ovaries and fallopian tubes but couldn't due to adhesions that were in the way....so that left one healthy ovary and fallopian tube.

I had wimped out of asking him to leave one set behind, when I met him on the morning of the op, as I had only seen the online information a day before due to the speed of the diagnosis and op... and I wasn't feeling very assertive.

It's your decision but make sure that you know all of the facts and talk things through with the surgeon including why s/he thinks it's a good idea to remove both sets of ovaries/ fallopian tubes.

    Good luck!

      Hey Angela

I had a 10cm x 11cm dermoid cyst on my right ovary I had both removed I was suffering with my pain so much that I got rushed to hospital ... I used a hot water bottle to numb the pain and strong painkillers like diclefencic if that's how you spell it ... As to get some strong pain relief if not go to a and e if your still uncomfortable sad I feel you pain... Being rushed in and kept in meant I had to wait 3 weeks for my op which isn't great but I was glad ...! I still get odd pains like phantom pains where my ovary and cyst was which is weird but I'm all healed smile hope things get better for you xxxx

I had two cysts on my ovaries and a growth on my uterus as well.  They did not remove it during my surgery because it was not an issue right now - and it's heart shaped apparently! - no need to be worried about that.

      Good luck with everything!

I'm so glad I found this board! Like many of you, I was brought to the Emergency Room with what I thought was appendicitis (after thinking it was food poisoning). After many tests they discovered I had two dermoids, one on each ovary. My surgery was scheduled three weeks later. Last Friday, August 7th my cysts were removed. They were larger than initially thought - one the size of a baseball and the other the size of a BASKETBALL - and both were on my left ovary. How I didn't feel either one baffles me!! My amazing doctor was able to remove both laparoscopically. She also saved half of my left ovary and did not touch my right after she was certain I would lose at least one. I could not be more thankful to my doctor or the hospital.

It's now been 8 days and while my scars feel great I am having pain and swelling in my private area. The inside feels fine but the outside is very painful. Is this normal? I was told I had a catheter in during the surgery but it was removed before I woke up in the recovery room. I have never had any kind of operation before so I don't know how it's "suppose to" feel. My doctor is also closed until Monday so I thought I could ask you guys!

Did any of you have this issue?

I had no idea there were so many women with this problem. I had never heard of it or thought about my ovaries until three weeks ago (no babies yet). I'm glad there are discussion forums like this for us to communicate!

Hello, I had a dermoid cyst 10cm x 11cm (the size of an orange) I to was rushed through a&e twice as the first time they just thought I had an ruptured appendix... But they were wrong... When I got rushed in the 2nd time I had loads of tests, blood, MRI, CT and ultrasound which is where they picked up the dermoid. Mine had teeth so it was easily noticeable!

I sadly lost my ovary as my cyst was wrapped round my ovary and was strangling it so no blood flow was available... I've gone through so much emotion and pain since the op... I was getting phantom pain where my right ovary was which is really weird..! If the pain consists Hun please go back to your doctor and insist that they do something because don't end up like me...! Still in pain and heavily depressed because I'm missing one of my lady organs.

I was less fortunate my scars didn't heal very well as in a little bit 'bigger' so it took a little while longer to heal. Are you still suffering with the pain still? Maybe go to a pharmacist and just explain some symptoms to a lady in there they may be able to give you some pain relief or even suggest scold compress with a towel wrapped around obviously as you don't want anything cold getting stuck on your lady parts lol smile

These forums have helped me so much and there is some lovely ladies on here who have lifted my spirits when I've been low and given me some amazing advice! So ask away and I'm sure someone will always reply!

Let me know how you get on...

      Hi Stacey,

Thanks so much for your reply.  I had to return to Emergency on Saturday as I was in more pain than I could bare.  Every time I went pee I would burst into tears.  It felt like pouring hot water from a kettle onto third degree burns...

Turns out I had a vaginal ulcer (most likely from a tool used during the surgery) which is now infected and a uriniary tract infection on top of that.  They gave me some numbing spray as well as antibiotics to clear up both infections.  I am feeling much better now (with the help of many pills).

Emotionally I am feeling like my old self - no more pain.  I hope you are not feeling too down post surgery.  My doctor made it clear you can have as many babies as you want with 1 ovary - it does not change a thing.  You are just as much woman as before, if not more!  The scars prove we are badass and tough smile Battle scars! I hope you start to feel 'normal' again soon.  If you ever need someone to talk to I'm here for you any time.

      Rest up & feel better.

But I just didn't really sexy anymore and felt like I couldn't ever give him the family he deserved ! No I miss him like mad because these are the times when you need your loved ones around you! I hate having no control over my emotions it's draining ! How are you feeling today xxx
