Ovarian Dermoid Cyst - Very Painful!!

Posted , 124 users are following.

I started having pain in my lower left side in October of last year, it wasnt too bad so I didnt go to the doctors until january as I thought it may go away. I suspected I may have a Cyst and told the doctor and he refered me for a scan. I had a scan in mid Feb and I was diagnosed with a Dermoid Ovarian Cyst, it was about 3.5cm. I had another scan the other day and it has grown to 5cm. I have been refered to a gynocologist and been told that its going to take 20 weeks. I went back to the doctors because its causing me a lot of pain, but he said just to take pain killers (which doesnt really help) Iv been getting really really tired lately and doctor thinks that it could be related to the cyst.

The pain is getting me down, today I was in agony, I had a really sharp pain and I couldnt move, I was in tears. Im not going to be seen for another 4 months at least and I dont know what to do! Im worried its going to grow bigger.

Has anyone else been through similar experiences? How can I relieve the pain, Iv tired pain killers and warm baths but nothing works. Im only little and worried about how big the cyst is going to get, how quickly do these things grow? Mine got 1.5cm bigger in 5 weeks, so Im hoping it might stop for a bit!

Thank you

Hello I'm am 20 in Feb I discovered I have 2 dermoid cysts one on each ovary. One is 3.5 and the other 3.7cm the dr says she has no way of knowing if the are for sure benign or if I will lose both ovaries until I have the surgery to remove the cysts. So my main concern is having kids. She gave me info on IVF but I know the for sure thing right now is having one now but idk if that's safe is there anyone in a similar situation that has gone thur this or has any info that would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I am 33 years old and I had laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy 3 weeks ago. I had been having painful cramps for years on my right side whenever I had my menstrual cycle and never understood why. Last year I got pregnant with my 3rd child and at 11 weeks I suddenly had heavy bleeding and blood clots. I thought I had a miscarriage! sad I had several tests and ultrasounds done and they finally told me that I had a 6 cm dermoid cyst in my right ovary. I was able to have a pretty healthy pregnancy, apart from having gestational diabetes and having to inject insulin each night, but I had the worst pain where the cyst was because my baby was pushing against it. It was so painful that I thought my ovary was going to burst several times. My doctor said that I had to wait until after I gave birth, for them to remove the cyst. I gave birth naturally to a healthy baby boy and once my baby turned 4 months old I was referred to a specialist and he scheduled my surgery for June 20th as he said that the cyst needed to be removed or it. could rupture or collapse my ovary and it would be an emergency which we wouldn't want. He said I would have a laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy and I had also requested to have my tubes burned as I do not want anymore children. (I have 3 healthy kids now and that's more than I could ask for) however, the day of surgery, we decided to completely remove my tubes (to help prevent ovarian cancer as that is where it is believed to develop and not in the ovaries itself, also because my sister had breast cancer so I want to be more precautious). After surgery, The doctor told me he had successfully removed the dermoid cyst and was able to save my ovary. So both of my ovaries are still intact and he removed both of my tubes completely. I noticed that I had a lot more pain from where my left incision was as well as the one in my belly button as these were the 2 biggest incisions (though they are only about an inch long) and I did have the chest and neck pain from the gas that they pumped into my stomach during surgery. It was definitely very painful everytime I tried to move, go to the bathroom or even sneeze or cough but I am so relieved that the cyst is out of me. I have been having some cramping on my right side where the cyst used to be. I have my post op follow up in 3 weeks. I hope my experience was a little helpful to any of you ladies who might be going through the same thing. Sorry for such a long post! I know that this forum definitely helped answer all the questions I had prior to my surgery. Thanks to everyone who posted about their own experiences!

I had a dermoid cyst removed in February. I was in so much pain that I passed out in my living room.It weighed 7lbs and contained hair. The recovery was so long. I was off work for 12 weeks because my incision kept tearing open. It still causes some pain but they said that was normal when It is that large and my incision was hip to hip. They said I could have some pain for as long as a year. The surgery was worth it. I've never felt better.

I was told I had a dermoid cyst in 2014. I was told they would have to remove it and my ovary. I then got pregnant and still have not had it removed. I hurt real bad and have gotten sever back and neck pain. I also feel nausous and my stomach is bigger than ever! I hope the cyst can't rupture until my insurance at work kicks in!!

Hi, I just turned 21 and I went to the ER due to a sharp pain on my right side. At first I thought it was appendicitis, but a CT scan showed that it was an ovarian cyst. All the ER doctor told me it was 19 cm, roughly 7.5 inches, and that I should follow up with a Gynecologist. This seems pretty scary to me, being that I'm very young. Any tips on dealing with this? Unfortunately, I lost my mother in May, so I have no guidance with this. Also, I've never seen a gynecologist before. This is all too scary for me 😓

      Hi samlyn95,

I have a dermoid cyst on my right ovary that is smaller than yours. They found it during a CT scan to see if I have gallstones. It is painful, as is my gallbladder. I'm having both my gallbladder and my right ovary with the cysr removed this Tuesday.

You really do need to see a gyno. They will likely do a pelvic exam, a vaginal ultrasound, and an ultrasound on the surface of your abdomen. It's gross and uncomfortable, but not really painful. Have your a friend go along and wait in the waiting room for you. Then make sure you treat yourself well after.

My guess is that you'll need to have the cyst removed. I will try to report back after Tuesday with how it goes for me. Be sure to read through this thread from the beginning. There is a lot of good info here beyond what you'll find using Google.

      Hang in there!

This is scary, but isn't too unusual. How are things going?

I went to see my gynecologist, turns out the cyst is smaller than the CT showed; it's 17.2 x 2.1 x 17cm, but my endometrial stripe is thickened at 2.04 cm, and my CA 125 is a little elevated at 84. She referred me to another gynecologist, so hopefully we will talk about surgery tomorrow!

Thank you! I see that everything went well with you! I have gone to visit my gyno, All those exams were taken, and i was referred to another gynecologist whom I will visit tomorrow. Hopefully he'll talk about surgery and set a date up, this pain is terrible. I have been so uncomfortable, even my ribs hurt, i don't know if that's normal.
