I've been dealing with this PMR for about two years I cannot take prednisone flares me up. Iam on natural supplements and helps with the inflammation but not working for the pain all over. Anyone on something other than the prednisone? I wake up in morning or sitting to long iam so stiff back, knees, heel of foot, joints, neck just all over can't take no more. Please any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you!

I can't take steroids and am on methotrexate for the inflammation and paracetamol and tramadol for the pain.Together they keep pain at tolerable level

Thank you any side effects on either one? Do you have pain in areas that I described? Sorry I always think the worse with myself. sad

No side effects to painkillers (I can't take NSAID )but had to be changed from tablets to injection for methotrexate to stop GI side effects.Occasionally get pain on injecting but it is transient and a skin reaction but that disappears within two weeks and is a good remember where not to stab myself (under skin injection on thigh)?

Morning Paula!  (Well it is here in Germany!  Don't know where you are).

It's very difficult to find the correct pain killers, we are all so different.  I take cocodamol, but you probably want to stick with a "natural" method.  Although I know of NO natural pain killers.😏

Have you got something else besides PMR - OA, RA?

Doctor said some arthritis in back of neck. But I was in an accident almost two years ago and my neck was never the same. Was seeing my PMR doctor and said my neck and upper back was tight so I do muscle relaxers helps some. Mornings are bad Im stiff all over till I move around some. I work and Iam fine but when Iam home and relax here comes the pain. Oh by the way Iam from Allentown,Pa. My grandson just came back from Germany on Friday he travels for his job. Thanks for your info!

I also had whiplash after someone drove out of a side road in front of me and that made the PMR far worse. I have had various treatments since - but by far the most useful is manual mobilisation of the tight muscles - muscle relaxants do nothing useful for me, they relax everything some and the bits needing it not enough. I also found Bowen therapy very useful during the 5 years of no pred - I don't think I could have done it without. So that may well be worth exploring and also look for a specialist sports physiotherapist or therapeutic massage therapist. Here in Italy I also get a technique called needling - invaluable for relaxing the spasmed muscles. My GP is rheumy trained so she does it using either steroids or lignocaine. Needling is also available from a few physios in the UK - look for intramuscular stimulation if you google it.

Other than the other corticosteroids there is no way to relieve the pain of PMR - I was on methylprednisolone for a time and the side effects were awful but I have none with prednisolone or prednisone. There are doctors who will say that NSAIDs help the pain but there are very few patients who would agree - if painkillers help the pain then it probably isn't directly PMR. Myofascial pain syndrome is often found alongside PMR and it often is improved some with NSAIDs. But if you have Barretts they aren't really an option.

The myogelosis (the stiffness you describe) is typical of PMR. Many people have found using an electric blanket BEFORE getting out of bed helps them get moving because they can get to the shower and do some gentle stretching which also helps. Keeping warm is always good. I managed PMR for 5 years without pred, not out of choice, and my best days were when I had an aquafit class early. I was self-employed so could arrange my days as I liked so literally fell out of bed, got into a swimsuit and jogging bottoms and struggled to the car. The gym had a warm pool, if the heating was faulty I couldn't do the class, and a steam room and sauna. After the class and a short sauna I could move fairly well for the rest of the day.

What do you mean the pred "flares me up"?

If I am sitting or resting to long, I get stiff. Moving helps me the most. Sometimes I feel like wrapped in a cocoon and I have to stretch all parts of my body to get rid of the tightness. Taking Tumeric in the evening before I go to bed plus daily stretching, Yin or Bliss Yoga helps me a lot. Massages like Myofascial Release and CranialSacral Therapy can give additional relief. And drink enough water plus some minerals. Dehydration tightens the fascia!!
