Pain/discomfort under right rib cage.

I have been experiencing this for the last few months, I have been searching the web looking for answers.  I am a 45 year old female, in good health, I take no medications, thin, active, I eat healthy, so I am at a loss. I have this feeling like there is something under my right rib cage as if something is stuck underneath or enlarged. At first I thought I had strained a muscle b/c I had been working out in the yard the day before it started. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like there is something there that shouldn't be but when I touch the area there is no swelling or bulge. After about 3-4 weeks when it wasn't going away I went to see my doctor. They did blood work, urine labs and sent me for an ultrasound of gallbladder, all came back normal. I have no other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. just this feeling like something is there. It seemed to go away on it's own and then came back and has come and gone since sometimes lasting a few days, sometimes a few weeks. When it is back wearing a bra is uncomfortable. Sometimes there is a warmth or burning sensation in the area. The only other symptoms I have had that I think are related are these: A few months before this started I experienced a fluttering sensation, almost like when I was pregnant and the baby moved, in the same location, a couple of times. Since this has started, on 3 or 4 different occasions, I have experienced a charlie horse like spasm in the same area, below the right rib, when bending over from a sitting position. Does anyone have any answers as to what this might be?  Does it sound like IBS? Peptic Ulcer? Hiatal Hernia?

Its very hard to describe but you did it well... going to bring this to my Dr so he can read it... its my symptoms to a tee... So many of us have it I see... Hi - I had exactly the same issue - it was driving me absolutely crazy! It was pretty much all I could think about from morning till night.

I finally figured out what it was (after MRI, ultrasound and a few other things). It was purely muscular.

I had a session with a physio therapist and a few muscles in my back and under my right ribs were extremely tight - this gave the feeling of something being under the ribs. The thing that helped me most was breathing REEEEALLY deeply (as deeply as physically possible) and I could immediately feel it stretching the tight muscles. I only needed to do this for a few days before it began to feel better.

I also did some other stretches - mainly leaning over to the left hand side - and could feel all the muscles in my back and right hand side were tight. After I few weeks I feel so much better - I hope this works for you!

I am 22 years old. I also have this weird feeling under my right rib. When I am hugged it feels like something moves under my ribcage or my rib moves or something. I also get this feeling when I move specific ways. I also started sometimes get this dull ache between my ribs sometimes - not often though.

Hope someone can help out with this?

    Kind regards

I've I've been following this discussion and was happy to know that there were many years others who were experiencing the same symptoms as me. I reached out to my doctor to have a consultation and he's telling me that I am experiencing classic symptoms of costochondritis. It's when there's inflammation of the cartilage under the rib cage and it could have been due to doing some kind of heavy lifting or sitting down all day as well. I was concerned that it may have been something to do with my liver. I've also expressed that at times when the pain is very acute. I have had trouble breathing when I take deeper breaths. I'm going to see him next week and examine further, as this was just a phone conversation due to the pandemic. Hope this info help. so far I've been described to have something topical to put on like Voltaren Gel which is over the counter.

i am glad i tripped across this thread my mistake!!!

In late feb 2020 something happened to me that i couldn't explain. For three weeks i could hardly get out of bed in the morning and would need to come home from work and take a two hour nap just to be able to get up and make a sandwich. then in March i found a rubbery lump at the base of my breast. The bottom band on my bra irritated what ever that was and then the lump was gone but my right breast blew up with a bunch of lumps and hurt like crazy overnight. This rupture if you will was followed by what i would call pretty severe burning in the tissue located just under my right breast. i was on antibiotics for seven weeks after and that's when the pressure spot under my right ribs started. later in May that pressure which seemed to start as every now and again was pretty much everyday. i also noticed that i was getting hypertension symptoms when it came on. my face would become flush, numbness in both upper arms , what they call tight throat and a numbness or tingling in the neck and jaw areas but yet my blood pressure was normal. worse part is none of my doctors could figure it out.

Fast forward ....$10,000 in copays and tests not to mention 70 doctor /specialish appts to the end of the year. Here is what was found, fist cat scan, What appeared to be a nodulated liver, second cat scan one week later no nodulation l. I then went for a ultra sound of the liver where they found a enlarged liver and spleen. Breast testing found nothing....no lumps no nothing but yet my breast was rediculously sore. i couldnt lay on my right side and breath properly yet there was nothing wrong with my lungs. By the end of Oct 2020 i was starting to feel slightly better, not so worn out everyday but couldnt wear a bra as it disturbed the rib tissue , all the while i was still having that nagging pressure under my right rib cage. i was also getting Bell palsy symptoms, one side of my lip higher than the other, nerve issues with my eyes including blurriness of vision and a large indent that developed under my left eye.

i went to a neuro in Nov, he did some testing and checked for antibodies related to shingles....i never had the rash but my antibodies were skyhigh. he told me there was no doubt i had shingles at some point in the last 12 months. He further explained that the blister/rubbery ball like thing i felt on my breast was a shingles blister, they tend to be larger with internal shingles. he asked all the right questions when all the other doctors wrote me off as crazy, one even marking my file as somazarion disorder, another saying we tested that and there was nothing there so move on! i moved on alright, without him. Testing also showed i had a H. Hernia (small). i had my gall bladder out 30 years ago and about two years ago i started having loose stool that was oily and merigold in color. the tight throat thing turned out to be LPR reflux which s**t my breathing down by causing my broncus to spasm closed.

Somehow all of this is tied together. the Neuro says its possible the internal shingles might have made there way to both the liver and large intestine. I will say that iI seems as if that pressure on rare occasions seems to move around that area , sometimes higher or more around the aide.

They are checking for lupus , one of the test came back positive and needs to be rechecked this month. I also tested positive for a duplicate clotting gene. I sure hope this helps steer someone else in the right direction.

    Hi,

I’ve had upper right side pain for 8 months now. the pain is almost always there sometimes gets worst. I’ve had so many test run and blood work plus emergency room visit due to pain. small Hiatal hernia and inflammation of the stomach lining but my gi says that’s not what’s causing the pain. He gave up on me but i have a friend who has the same issues . Her doctor after ruling out chrones diease said it’s IBS and told her to do a Fodmap diet and after three Weeks of this diet she is no longer in pain!!! I’m going to my doctor to see if this will help me. Has any one else tried this??

I have the same thing, I think - since last autumn.

Fluttering and cramps in the right abdomen, sore ribs that come and go, stitch-like pain in right side, moving down or to the back as an ache.

I have had an ultrasound that suggested a swollen kidney, a renal scan with dye that showed a swollen kidney, then a CT scan and nuclear medicine renal function scan that showed normal function and one kidney slightly larger than the other. The Urology consultant said he didn't think the kidney was causing the pain. My liver was normal on the scans, which is a relief as I have had breast cancer and dread secondary cancer. There was a small polyp near the entrance to my gallbladder and an ovarian cyst that's been there for at least 6 years.

I think I may have had a bruise in the affected area a few months ago too. I did lift heavy weights and fall over during the autumn/winter. I played tennis today, before working, and it is quite bad now.

So I am back to square one, with a GP suggesting it is something muscular. What can I do? The pain comes on after sitting at my desk or driving, gets worse walking the dog, relieved by lying down, although I did feel it very slightly in the night last night. It's difficult to work as a writer/editor, even though we have installed a standing desk so I don't have to sit. Slouching seems easier than sitting forward if I want to avoid the pain, so I slouch back in the evening if I want to watch television, for example. I am off to lie on the floor now, so that I can walk the dog without severe stitch-like pains in my right side after working...

Have you looked into Fitz Hugh's Curtis syndrome? It's usually from untreated clamydia. which there usually aren't symptoms to until it spreads throughout your body. look into it and Google pictures. it swells the lining of liver and is similar to endometriosis the way it webs from liver lining to stomach lining... I hope it's something else. with me also. I guess I will find out soon. Done every test imaginable waiting on results now. Also you'd need a blood test not urine culture
