Pain under ribs on right hand side

Posted , 115 users are following.

Hi, for 5 months now I have been experiencing a stitch like pain under my ribs on the right hand side. I had my gall bladder scanned, all was ok. Had liver function test, all ok. Kidneys scanned - all ok. Test for ulcer - all ok. The pain is intermittent.

Not sure if it is connected, but five months a go I stopped taking sugar in tea and switched to sweeteners (aspartame). I got through 100 tablets in two weeks. My stomach ballooned with gas and I belched a lot. The pain appears to have come on shortly after this. Whether the sweeteners had anything to do with it, I don't know. I am male, 40 years old, reasonably fit and a non smoker.

Thanks.

Hi all, I have found this thread to be very interesting as I am cirrently experiencing this pain and have been for a couple of months.  I went to my GP as I was having trouble keeping my blood sugar up and was often suffering hypos.  Also I have this pain under my right ribs and across the middle of my back. The dr took bloods and my liver function test showed that it has been slightly raised on a couple of occassions so he is now sending me for an ultrasound.  Have any of u had this pain go through to your back?

    Hi Damien1973,

Drinking aspartame is poison, look it up on google, your better taking sugar instead of aspartame. I had a lot of bloating and sometimes i looked 6 months pregnant, and then by morning it was gone again but would always come back again, i finally had a colonoscopy and the found a cancerous tumour 3mm i ended up in hospital 2 weeks later and had 30cm of my large intestine removed, they got the cancer early so i did not need chemo, (thank goodness). Then 12 months later i had sharp pain in my right side and going across my back and in my shoulder blades, i had tests and ultra sound, they found nothing, so i went to a different doctor and he sent me for another ultrasound, and i had gallstones and now have had that removed......so if your not happy with your results get a second opinion. Good luck.

If you google the dangers of aspartame Damian, you will see a list of horrors. Among other things, it is a neurotoxin and should never be taken under any shape or form.

hello after reading this post with interest, i would like to let you know my story.  I am a 53 year old female and very overweight.  I am Type 2 diabetic diagnosed 6 years ago.  I take a lot of tablets ie one for blood pressure, statins, omeprazole and metformin.  A few weeks ago i had an ultrasound scan for what i thought was gallstones as i have been experiencing a mild/discomfort pain under my right rib which comes and goes (some days worse than others).  I was very surprised to find from the scan report that i do not have gallstones but what was detected was a cyst in my liver (I am due to have an MRI scan soon) AND a fatty liver.  I do not know how long i have had this and don't know if i had the fatty liver before the diabetes or the diabetes before the fatty liver.  Anyway, i am now on a mission to try and reverse my diabetes and fatty liver (my GP said this is possible with lifestyle change).   What concerns me is that if i had not had this scan, i would never have known about the cyst or fatty liver and this has now prompted me to take more serious responsbility of my own health from now on.  How many of us are walking around unaware that we have cysts, fatty liver etc which are only picked up 'by chance' (incidental they called it)?  why don't doctors make patients aware that we should get checked out for things like this?  i think i know the answer - all to do with cost ie they don't point this out because otherwise it would cripple the NHS even more if patients wanted to get scans as these are expensive so they keep quiet.  What i will do in future is take it upon myself to have regular LFT's and an annual scan (either via the GP or if they won't do it i will consider going private) as we as individuals have to take responsiblity of our own health because the NHS won't.

Realize this is an old thread, but acid reflux will definitely cause soreness under the ribs, bloating, belching and sore throat. Pain under the right rib (that feels like someone is boring into your rib with their finger) is most likely an irritated duodenum. If I overdo it on wine, fruit, coffee or green tea and stress, I will have this happen. (Doc confirmed it with an upper endoscopy). I ONLY drink low acid coffee now (Sumatra, dark French Roast) and that really helps. I keep fruit, wine and tea to a minimum. If I overdo it, Pepcid AC works best for me. I may also take Pepto Bismol for a couple of days when it's really bad. It's great for soothing the burn and protecting the stomach lining.  It takes a couple of weeks to a month for the digestive irritation to completely heal. Then you can try reintrocuding acidic foods, but learn your limit.

I was also recently diagnosed with a hiatus hernia.  A couple of GP's i have seen have said that the discomfort under my right rib is not due to my liver cyst and they have said it's more to do with my hernia.

Hi, how is everybody on this thread doing now? Have you had any firm diagnosis of anything or are you all attempting to cure yourselves with the milk thistle supplements? I've been returning to this thread for a while now as I've been suffering with the same and reading all the info calms me down a bit when I start panicking there's something really wrong with me. Doc said he's sure it's nothing sinister as it would be getting worse if it were. I'm a 34 yr old female who (up until recently) regularly drinks far far too much, I used to exercise and eat healthily but that went out the window in the last year or so as well so I imagine it contributed to my self diagnosed fatty liver.

I get the discomfort/swollen feeling around my liver, plus stabbing sensations in my side and ribs, plus all sorts of other issues coming into effect now which I'm not sure whether they are related or not!

Think I'll have to go back to the docs but don't want to look like a hypochondriac. I'm taking milk thistle had digestive enzymes and feel they are helping digestive issues but yet I still get random attacks of pains, I can't work out what's setting it off!?

Has anyone had any more revelations?

Hi, I had a liver cyst found by chance a few weeks ago when I had an ultrasound scan and a fatty liver. I have an MRI scan tomorrow so that they can have a more detailed look at my liver, I'm keeping everything crossed all will turn out OK. Will post again when I know more.

Hi - I have had lots of pain in the upper right side of my stomach and ribs for about 6mths now. I get some pain most days and have had a few flare ups where pain is pretty much constant and more severe for a week or so. My stomach is always painful to touch in that area and sometimes my ribs. My gp sent me for an ultrasound on liver, gallbladder, kidneys and nothing reported. I am 30, female, slim and otherwise generally pretty healthy. I have tried cutting out milk products and initially thought that helped a bit. Would like to play a bit more with my diet to see if that helps but am currently breastfeeding my baby and already struggling to maintain my weight so will have to wait a bit.

Like you Bee I think I need to go back to my doc as I am getting fed up. There must be some sort of explanation. Will look into milk thistle and enzymes though as hadn't thought to try that, thanks.

My problem was Acute Pancreatitis brought on by Gall Stones. You're Gall Bladder sits just behind you're liver on the right side and a few people with the same complaint have said they can feel them.

Sounds like you really need a scan to see where the source of the problem is. If you're insistent enough you're GP will eventually need to send you for a CT Scan at best or at least an ultrasound.

I went back to my GP about this issue as whilst not as severe as it was it's still lurking around. He did blood tests which all came back normal, so upon further investigation I think it may actually be hepatic flexure syndrome, basically gas caught in the bends of the colon. I don't know about you but I've suffered from IBS plenty in the past but this was nothing like that so I assumed not related. Anyway something for you to ponder on as I'm almost certainly convinced this is what is going on with me. It's annoying but a relief that I've not done myself irreversible damage from 15 years of boozing!

I find it interesting that you mention the tea and coffee because I stopped putting sugar in my tea and coffee too and started getting the same pain under ribs a few weeks later, I've had this pain for months now with no relief, I'm seeing herpetologist Friday as lesions were discovered on my liver but sounds like they may not be the culprit as everyone else is saying they have this pain too but their scans are clear ?
