Pain under ribs on right hand side

Posted , 115 users are following.

Hi, for 5 months now I have been experiencing a stitch like pain under my ribs on the right hand side. I had my gall bladder scanned, all was ok. Had liver function test, all ok. Kidneys scanned - all ok. Test for ulcer - all ok. The pain is intermittent.

Not sure if it is connected, but five months a go I stopped taking sugar in tea and switched to sweeteners (aspartame). I got through 100 tablets in two weeks. My stomach ballooned with gas and I belched a lot. The pain appears to have come on shortly after this. Whether the sweeteners had anything to do with it, I don't know. I am male, 40 years old, reasonably fit and a non smoker.

Thanks.

My advice (from experience) is to go to your GP and get a scan done.  I went along thinking i had got gallstones but it showed up as a cyst in my liver which i am now seeing a consultant about.  Please don't worry with what i am saying but i too had a pain for months before i thought i had better get it looked at.  It may be nothing and muscular especially if you do boxing but there is no harm in seeing your GP.  Good luck with it.

    Thanks for everyone's contribution.

end story is I've been in hospital 3 weeks for Gall Stones that has caused Acute Pancreatitis and a lot of vomiting when eating non Low Fat Diet food.

Gall bladder is now gone and I'm still struggling to eat any decent voumes of food but am improving slowly. If you want to lose 3 stone in as many weeks this is as as good a diet plan as it gets.

Still no appetite but hopefully within the next month will have energy and appetite back.

As recommended to me by a few folks insist on a scan.

I have pain in my side, ribs and round my back. I was admitted to hospital last Monday with suspected kidney stones. I had a CT scan, ultra sound and an X-ray. As well as intravenous morphine and many other pain killers. Nothing is touching the pain and they don't know what is causing the pain as all scans etc were normal. I'm in agony and no further forward! I'm on holiday and have spent the whole time in my pyjamas with a hot water bottle. The pain is sharp, painful and mostly there constantly. It eases a little when I lie on my left side. I am taking diclofenac, dihydrocodine, acupan and paracetamol and they are not touching the pain! My diet is healthy and I'm not over weight so what on earth is it?! I have sent my sister to get Milk Thistle to see if it helps. Will try anything at the minute!

I am glad I have run upon this forum today. Because I was about ready to go to the Emergency room. I have all symptoms with pain on right side under rib cage. Pain was intermittent for years, now constant. However, I do not have a gallbladder, removed over 30 years ago. I am going to follow some of the suggestions posted. All tests fine.

I stopped taking sugar and moved to sweeteners, it took some time but I stopped taking them too as they are just as unhealthy, just lower in calories.

I'm 28 and have had the exact same problem for 6 months, 4 months ago I called an ambulance for myself as it was so bad it gave me a panic attack! After a chest X-ray and blood test they found nothing and booked me for ultrasound on gallbladder and also found nothing... The pain comes and goes some weeks bad some weeks fine... The last few weeks has been bad so I decided to completely change my diet and quit smoking, started taking milk thistle, magnesium to help with my anxiety and probiotics, I feel fantastic but the pain is still here albeit about less but I wasn't sure if that was just the normal coming and going of this nasty pain.... Still for the last 4 days it had been much better so it seemed the pain was definitely related to my diet. I had been on a very long train ride yesterday and I was very hungry so I bought a sandwich from the lady serving food on the train.... BIG MISTAKE I was in agony for about 6 hours afterwards with sharp pains there! Never eating bread again!!! I tried eating some Indian food today to see if that would kick it off too...nothing was completely fine. That was about 6 hours ago. I started to think about my problem about half an hour ago and it almost immediately started, albeit in a mild form. I'm lost! I'm not imagining it but how can this of happened? And why particularly bread? I do have IBS in the family but I'm confused how and why it would be that when I have such an isolated pain coming from my gallbladder? This is frustrating the crap out of me! This thread has been my major reference point as you all perfectly describe what I'm suffering from too. I will continue with the diet and see how things progress and keep you guys updated, I was just wondering how you guys where getting on since posting?

Hi all and many thanks for this discussion. I also have been suffering from this sort of pain on the right side and been to various scans and tests etc and no real explanation from the doctors as to what's wrong and why. Liver function blood tests fine, US shows no gall stones and no abnormalities in other organs, endoscopy didn't pick up ulcers. So I'm not really sure what to do.

Pain is bad enough to interfere with day to day life, can't really get through more than 4/5 straight hours without need to lie down.

The discussion below is very helpful and illuminating but one thing that hasn't been mentioned is pain relief options. What helps? I have tried paracetamol and biscopan. These are of very little help. Changed my diet to essentially a diet for those with ulcers, limited help. Take milk thistle daily. Pain is till there though. Have to go back to work on Monday and not sure how I'll cope...

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Thanks

I am hoping you can help me. For approximately 3 months I have been having pain behind my right rib. The pain is also in my right side and back. The stabbing pain is aggervating and uncomfortable during the day but is stabbing worse at night. It keeps me awake. And wakes me from my sleep. It also intensifies if I cough or sneeze. Pain relievers do not help nor does a heating pad. There are times my rib gets tender and feels like it is bruised. I have had no injury in the area. I have seen GI and Neurology besides my GP. I have had blood work, CT, U/S, Hida Scan, EGD, Colonoscopy, and Bone Scan. All test came back normal. I have been in the hospital emergency room 3 times. The last time I was given Stadol and was the only time I did not feel pain for 2 days. I wasn't awake either. I am tired all the time. Have nausea with some vomiting, and constipation (constipation due to the medication). I am a nurse and this scares me since my doctor and I don't know what to do or treat. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I am so glad I found this thread.  I have been experiencing this pain on my right side for 3 years.  I've had all of the tests for this pain (MRI, Ultrasound, blood tests, xrays, colonoscopy) you name it.  I was recently in the hospital overnight because my blood pressure was high and my prescription for it wasn't controllilng my pressure.  I told them about the pain in my side and again had all the tests which results were negative.  I do have a cyst on my liver. My pain comes and goes. It has been lasting this time for over 3 weeks.  I have a lot of acid on my stomach and my constant burping is creating a problem with my husband.  I have Omeprazole that I have been taking. I have been avodiing acid foods and have stop drinking wine. I haven't been sleeping lately because of the pain.  I've taken motrin to try to relieve ti for just a little while but it doesn't help much. I will stop putting sugar in my coffee and tea and also I will get the milk thistle tomorrow and pray it helps.  I am thankful for this site because I have been depressed because of this constant pain.

I know it's been awhile since this discussion was started and I hope some of you are still around to offer some input. I also have been told I have a fatty liver but that it was normal, well what isn't normal is this daily constant pain in my upper abdomen right under my ribs, about 2 inches above my belly button. I know some of you have discussed pain under the right rib, do any of you have middle pain? My pain is constant, some days more painful than others but every day the pain is always there to some degree. It's a dull ache/twinge. I get this pain in cycles/flares. I am in pain for weeks to months then it goes away only to return again. I am definitely going to start the regime that I have read on here from Heal Yourself because it definitely can't hurt and sounds very promising. Anyone else try it wilth great results? How are you all today? Any input would be great, thanks 😀

Your symptoms sound exactly like mine.  Please see my response below on slipped ribs.  Hope you get to the bottom of it soon.

I'm a 33 year old female who has been having pain under my sternum and ribs which radiates to the right. I feel like im being squezzed and then stabbed once in awhile, and at times I feel like I'm being pinched inside(it's doing it right now) it goes it to my right flank sometimes and sometimes it's on the left also. One thing I've noticed is I feel the best when I wake up but after 90 mins it starts again and get progressively worse as the day goes on, if I take a nap when I wake up I feel better but then about 30 min it's back. I had my gallbladder out in 2006, I do have kidney stones and mild cortical thinning on my right side, but the stones are free floating and have had 14 surgeries for it in the past, so I know it's not stones causing the problem. I do have pulmonary embolisms this is my 2nd time having them, one of the symptoms that I get from them is pain under my ribs, but I've been on coumadin since last September and the pain went away from them in November. In December is when this new pain started, I'm in a lot of pain and very nauseated. I do have a fatty liver which I've had before but I lost 100 lbs and it went away but after I got the pe's I gained back 40 lbs and I have a fatty liver again. The ultrasound showed the kidney and liver problems but nothing that should cause my symtoms. My bloodwork shows a slight raise in my white cells, monocytes and a slight raise in my red blood cells but the doctors have said its alright. Ive seen 4 different doctors at my clinic because my pcp quit so ive been seeing float doctors and ive been going almost every week since December and they are stumped. I have been on methadone since 2009, so my doctors won't prescribe pain meds and I can't take any NSAIDS or asprin because of the blood thinners I'm on, so I end up in a ball crying a lot. I'm on prevacid and zantac and they gave me sulfacarate because for a few weeks I was having bad burning in my stomach but the burning has gotten better but I feel like someone is squeezing me under my ribs. I've had to quit working because I'm so sick, I'm back at my parents house. I feel like such a burden. My boyfriend is telling me it's all in my head. I take methadone, prevacid, zantac, coumadin, hydroxyzine, and phenegren. I got referred to gastroenterology but when I called they had a three month wait list because of the insurance I'm on, so now I'm waiting for a referral to another gastroenterologist. The only thing that changed for me in December is I quit smoking but I do use a ecig. I'm just so fed up. It's nice to know in not the only one but I'm very sorry for everyone who is also in pain. I wish everyone luck
