Painful Burning Sensation In Urethra - No Uti Or Std - Female

Posted , 141 users are following.

I am a 21 year old female in the UK, and I have been suffering with a painful burning sensation which I believe to be coming from my urethra since September 2014. The pain comes and goes throughout the day, and it will be at its most intense after having urinated, and after sex. At its worst I struggle to walk. The need to urinate has increased but there is no difficulty in going, though I do now most often have two streams when urinating which sometimes will stop and start. On multiple occasions there has also been thick blood in my urine too.

No UTIs have ever shown up on the paper dip test at my local GPs, though I have had UTIs in the past. I have tested negative to all STDs. I have had ultrasound scans which have shown nothing abnormal. I have had numerous internal examinations by doctors and one by a Gynaecologist, all have said everything looks normal and healthy.

My GP has had me try at least 6 different types of antibiotics but none have had any effect on me, except for Cefalexin which I took once a day for 28 days, the pain felt lifted and sex was possible again, but 3-4 days after having finished my course I was back to how I was before them.

I drink plenty of fluids (including cranberry juice) and eat healthy, I don't drink alcohol, smoke, or take drugs. All pain killers have very little effect on the pain, only a hot water bottle sat between my thighs brings any relief. Taking cranberry capsules, and/or cystitis relief sachets has had no effect.

I am about ready to give up on my local GP, its doctors and the NHS, no matter how many appointments I make and attend no progress is ever made, no tests are ever taken and my request to be referred to a Urologist has been repeatedly turned down, I am only ever told to drink more water and to try a new antibiotic, which I pay for each time, no one seems willing to search and to find out what is causing the pain. Affording to go private is a problem for me though, and so I just hope there is someone out there who can relate to me and give me guidance/knowledge on what to do.

This pain is now negatively affecting all aspects of my life.

Hi ladies, I am at wits end with urethral/vaginal pain & discomfort. I pee frequently but it does NOT hurt when I am going pee. I can't really sleep cause I keep getting up to pee also.. I was treated for UTI two weeks ago with 3 days Cipro (500mg) but on day 4 went to doc and did a quick urine test and no infection was found (but urine was not fully cultured though)... The week following the cipro I felt noticeably better so I am baffled... and upset. I feel for all of you that have had to deal with this problem for months or years, urgh. I'm 50 and just starting menopause, (still getting some periods) and the gyno told me it's probably vaginal atrophy even though that only happens to women in their 70s or 80s. WRONG! Urine tests come back negative for UTI / STD. And I found an article saying that a common test for bladder infections often MISSES too many UTIs. So they test or culture for E-Coli but don't check for soe of the less common bacteria... ?? Anyone know anything about this? Tonight I was SURE I had a UTI with the burning and peeing so much, so I took AZO and it plus advil helped a little... If AZO helps then what does this mean about it not being a UTI. It feels very uncomfortable when I move around so I have become depressed and I stay in bed. I'm beginning to think I have bladder cancer or something... Or maybe IC. So it's been two weeks of this urethral discomfort and burning, and no other tests yet. I have asked to see a urologist or a gynourologist. Does bladder cancer (maybe white blood cells) show up in urine culture? Can anyone point me in the right direction please? Any replies much appreciated thank you.

I too had pain that increased toward the end of urinating and after. Also pain worsened with sex. I constantly felt like I had a UTI but all test came back with NO UTI. Most of the pain was around/near the opening of the urethra. I went to pelvic floor/urology specialist because I had so much pain. I had difficulty walking, pain increased when I bent over, strained, picked up my kids, prior to having a bowel movement and after bowel movements. They were convinced it was pelvic floor dysfunction with nerve involvement. I spent 3 1/2 in chronic pain with constant adjustments to medications that included, muscle relaxers, Lyrica, diazepam, tramadol, etc. I had an MRI (without due) of my hips, a cystoscope, multipule exams,  2 different nerve blocks, had Botox of the pelvic floor multiple times and PT 2 times a month for 3 1/2 years with continued, chronic, daily pain. I even tried chrotherapy. Sometimes the pain was so bad that I could not walk or sit. After Dr. Google-ing for 3 1/2 years praying to find some solution, I requested my Dr. see if I could possibly have a skeen's gland infection.  She ordered an MRI with dye. Praise the Lord she did because I had diverticulitis of the urethra. I didn't even know that was possible and it was missed with all the exams and scopes. I had surgery and a week later I am now completely pain free and am weening off my last med (muscle relaxer). Don't give up.

Please look at the info on new vaccine for UTI's called Uromune . As far as I have worked out, and I am not a doctor, but have done much research, the testing methods are the problem for a significant amount of recurrent UTI's sufferers.

PetalP did you ever find out what was going on or get some relief?

Same problem I found out what it was for me ..Candida overgrowth! Try following a Candida diet and see if your burning has a correlation with eating sugar or yeast it’s even so bad for me now that I had green tea yesterday (banned from Candida diet) and I had intense burning shortly after

    Hi

I've been having sort of the same issue. About 6 months ago I had tha painful  urination and it lasted about a week. I took the Azo and it helped. But once it was out of my system I needed to take it again. It stopped once my menstral cycle came. About three months later it came back and I went back to the same solution. Sex was sometimes uncomfortable but it wasn't all the time. Then about a week again it went away. Now this is the third time it came back so I decided to go to my gyn and they did a UA dipstick on me and said everything was fine. No UTIs no STDs. Everything looked normal. So they prescribed me macrobid and this is my third day on it and I can honestly say it doesn't seem like it's helping. Now its more of the feeling that after I use the bathroom it burns then and makes me uncomfortable still. Sometimes it goes away on it's in but sometimes it doesn't. I just spend so much money to go to my gyn for them to tell me everything is normal but this painful burning sensation is not normal and I cannot express that enough to my doctor. They have not referred me to a urologist but after looking up and doing some research I feel like that's my only hope to feeling normal again. I'm just scared to go and put all this money out that I don't have for them to say everything is normal.

Sorry for your pain. I know it to well. I've spent thousands at the urologist, urogyn, dr's etc.. for them to tell me everything is normal. Almost 3 years and counting not to mention that this started in 2007 and lasted for 4 years and then stopped for 4 years and now back again. I had all the same testing done in 2007 as well to be told everything is normal. Google everything you can. Look up urethral diverticular and also interstitial cystitis and see if that matches you. Also just so you know, every month I get my period I have burning before during and after. I'm ready to have a hysterectomy so I dont ever get a period again. Luckily I'm 42 with 2 children. I also have to work through this sometimes excruciating pain. I only make it through the days by the grace of GOD. Good luck and let me know if you have anymore questions.

This is exactly what’s happening to me and I’m scared I’m only 16 and it’s uncomfortable most of the time but everything is “normal”

I’m only 16 and have a similar problem idk what to do the doctor has said nothings wrong but the pain keeps getting worse. I also don’t understand why it hurts then doesnt then does again. I treated myself for a yeast infection but that did nothing so I’m really frustrated and scared

Your poor thing... I've had this for six months and it's horrible and scary. I  suggest you go and see a Women's Physio ASAP. I finally had a diagnose of High Tone Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. This basically means that the muscles in your pelvic floor go into spasm, this then mimics the pain felt from many other conditions - cystitis, thrush, you name it.  Doctors can't find it I'm afraid, they aren't trained to look at muscles and if they can't find cysts/ growths or infections they think there is nothing wrong with you.

I am now much better with physio training (and internal massage, yep you heard it) and breathing / release work techniques. She also taught me how to put pressure on the trigger points myself (using my finger) meaning i can help relax the muscles when feel a 'flare' coming on. Relaxation, yoga etc all help. But knowing what it is half the battle and takes the anxiety out of it.

They can diagnose you by feeling the muscle, I also had an ultra sound scan that showed how 'high' the muscle stayed and was pushing on my bladder causing a lot of pain,.  As i said, doctors can't really help you with this, you need to see women's physio. It's a big thing in Australia, but UK is a bit slow on the uptake.

i go to a great place in West London / Barnes called White Hart Clinic, it's about 60 pounds a session so v affordable. but there are lots of them across the country.

Good luck! Whatever your problem is, there will be some muscle spasms involved so this will help

It's also worth noting that thrush, UTIs etc, can make the muscles go into spasm AFTER the infection has been treated. It's body's defense against infection and sometimes it gets confused protecting itself against something that isn't there anymore (this is what happened in my case). Then the pain causes more spasm and then you are in a vicious circle. Some anti inflammatory drugs can help and even some antihistimines (the ones you take for hayfever) as they stop the body producing the fight or flight hormone, histamine

      Hi yes

I'm pretty much fixed now, bar the odd flare... I got to the bottom of it and it was pelvic floor muscle spasms... they mimic UTIs/ candida you name it.  I had a huge amount of different medicine for about 8 months and it didnt do anything, and was in a lot of pain.

suggest she finds a female physio and does some 'release' work. they do some internal massages and go through some exercises with you. They showed me under an ultra sound how my pelvic muscles were pushing on my bladder causing a lot of pain. I also got an internal massage thing on amazon, sounds very weird but it worked!

good luck to your wife getting through this horrid condition,

      Annabel
