Hi Michelle, I got that when I first started per I, it scared the crap out of me. As the other ladies said it's another nagging nuisance of the syndrome. I remain stunned and amazed at the power of estrogen and all of the issues resulting from it'd decrease. I spoke with my mom and she said all she ever got was heat flashes that's it. No breast pain, no joint swelling no chest swelling, no panic attacks nada. I

Thank you ladies for your replies. For some reason im not getting notification of ur replies on my email. I have finally read the leaflet on the mirtazapine and tremors and shakes is a common symptom. But if im totally honest I think I had them on and off before the meds. Ive been in perimenopause eight years and this symptom always sends my anxiety through the roof. I have an appt next werk at docs to discuss weaning off. Not sure if its the right decision or not but I have gained half a stone in a year on them as well x

I'm not sure what your 'health anxiety' means as far as a diagnositc tool...but the only thing that comes to mind is possible thyroid - other than that my thoughts would suggest a good b complex vitamin to help your nervous system and magnesium to sooth muscle tremors or spasms.  In the meantime by all means ask your doctor or phamacist if what you are feeling is normal or not.  Peace of mind is what counts

I started having internal shaking/vibrations that repeatedly woke me at night 11 months ago too. I still have it although not alwaus as bad. I definitely think its related to peri menopause and hormone levels for me.

Have you found anything that helps? Im contemplating hrt but wondering if it's only a temporary fix.

I really wish doctors would acknowledge this symptom. So many women experience it.

  • Edited

at one time this was the worst symptom for me

its somehow related to stomach problems and/or anxiety but i cant quite put my finger on it

i get long spells of buzzing or jitters too

i found that it magnifies if we are still...so now i get going and do some sort of activity...its just a body sensation ...others cannot see the tremours

the shaking that comes with blood sugar dropping can be visible to others

Have any doctors suggested this could be early parkinson?
    • Posted

It definitely feels like Parkinson's! Anybody else here really dizzy/lightheaded along with it? And do you get head jerks and body jerks along with it sometimes too?

I notice my involuntary head jerks exacerbate particularly when lying down. My fine motor skills are being affected too. Are you ladies the same?

Watching a youtube video on PPPD/MDDS the other day and the woman researcher said that the internal tremors/vibrations/rocking/swaying motion may be related to estrogen levels sharply dropping (and spiking etc).

Hi Michelle, am new to this forum, but I had to reply I too get this unsettling trembly sensation, all over I am in menopause and have never had so many weird symptoms, it's scary I am always at docs, yet nothing wrong! So they say, I still fret it's something serious, like you it seems to go when am busy, guess it's all due to the changes our bodies go through!hope your ok.

Do your tremors make you very anxious? I wake up with them every morning. My anti anxiety medication doesn't even really help anymore. I feel so nauseous also and have headaches and gastritis. I feel like my whole body is shaking and I can't sit still.

    • Edited

Tonia, Yes.  When I started having this symptom I had no idea what was causing it and that made me very anxious.  I've since worked through the anxiety and don't fear it anymore.  Now I barely even wake up when it happens at night. Through this journey I learned that hormone fluctuations can cause this symptom or it can be just anxiety driven. I know how scary it can be when it starts so if you want you can message me.

I can't stand it. I feel like I'm going to go crazy. Did anything help?

I have the internal shaking as well as the external shaking. I have had it for years. It will slack up sometimes, but it always comes back. I have not found anything that helps with this. The shaking is so bad sometimes it is visable to anyone around me. Anxiety definitely makes it worse. There are days I truly feel like I am loosing it!

I am positive my internal vibration/shaking is caused by hormonal shifts from peri. It started after my hysterectomy along with other classic peri symptoms. I also believe anxiety makes it 10x worse. Somehow the elevated stress hormones/chemical effect it.  I've also read posts by men who experience this symptom so for some it can be purely anxiety driven.

Sometimes our greatest struggles is where we find our greatest growth.  That certainly happened to me.  I struggled with anxiety off/on since a teenager.  This symptom at 46 yrs made me hit rock bottom. When it started I freaked out and for months I was in a constant state of panic seaching for the cause and monitoring my body symptoms. I went to multi doctors, had lots of tests, ct brain scan, specialists and LOTS of blood tests.  All normal.  I got to the point where I was angry at living in fear and said enough is enough!!  I made a FIRM decision to change and started educating myself on anxiety. Not just self help books but books on physiology, books by doctors who had pet scan before/afters of proof, books on how the body works, etc. Then I used myself as a guinee pig and tried out different techniques I had learned. It wasn't easy and I had to discipline myself to keep trying even when I didn't believe there was anything to hope for. (Which I learned is actually because when the body is hypersensitized from stress the brain will divert "attention" away from the logic area of the brain instead focus on the "anxiety/flight/fight" areas with more blood/oxigen etc. That's why you may know your fears are illigical but you still fear them!  Knowing all these physiological truths helped me push through. fyi; I'm putting this in common language for the sake of explaining here.  But slowly I started to feel better, to change the way I think, and it snow balled for the better.  I learned that the brain is placid and we can actually train our brains to think differently and to make new neuron connnections so you don't default to panic thoughts.  Honestly, I never would have thought it was possible for me.  I thought I was doomed to fear and had it worse then anyone else.  So if there was hope for me there's hope for all!  Now I am set free from fear. I still feel  internal shaking at night but it doesnt botter me and it's not bad. Often accompanied by a hot flash. Sometimes it's so soft/light and only 1 time at night.  About 1 week a month it's more frequent and  bit stronger but I know it will pass and it doesn't bother me. I read something interesting on hormone changes at night.

I hope you feel better soon. Be hopeful.

If you can let go of your fear of it then it will get better. It will be less frequent and not so "strong" of a feeling.  I think anxiety multiplies it. I no longer fear it.   It still happens 1-3 times a night but it's so soft I barely wake up.  One week a month it disappears completely (usually at the same time my hot flashes disappear).

I'm sure it's hormones and in time it will pass.

I hope you feel better soon.  I know it's a scary feeling. Take care.

Tonia, when I read your post about the tremors, nausea and gastritis, I thought OMG THAT'S ME!.  It has been over 3 years since my "weird" symptoms started.  It all started with strange head aches with extreme fatigue and progressed from there.   The tremors came along about 2 years ago and the nausea has really increased over the past 4 months.  I almost feel as though I have morning sickness again.  I've been to my regular doctor, a neurologist, a chiropractor and had acupuncture.  Nobody seems to really know what's wrong with me.  I am fully convinced that this is all part of the "permenopause hell".  My question is...does this all eventually go away when I am finally in the post-menopausal state?  If anyone can shed some light on this for me, I would be very greatful.

Hi! I wanted to check in and see if you could send me the link on what you read for your anxiety. The moderator removed it. I hope you're doing well. Thank you for all the information.

I've still got the tremor and I really think it's getting worse. I have horrible gastritis. I get really nauseous. Now I've developed a new symptom, pain in my pelvic area. I've been to the doctor and had an ultrasound and CT done. Now I've found out I have a spot on my kidney that they're not sure about. Going to a Urology oncologist tomorrow. I dread it so bad. I am claiming it's just a cyst. Also I have a little bit larger than normal cyst on my ovary. I start getting pelvic pain days before my period, even if I don't have a period.

      Hi Shea,

I started reading books by Claire Weeks (she wrote 5 books, some titles are worded slightly different outside of the US, she also is on youtube) "Hope and Help for your nerves" & "Peace from nervous suffering". Google her and read her bio. She was a pioneer in CBT believing it worked because she used it to overcome anxiety herself. She understood and cared without wanting to make a profit from the desperation of anxiety suffers. Who she was and her story made me trust her and try her theories. I'll have to search for the titles of other books. They weren't all directly related to anxiety. They were books on psychology, how the brain works, mindfullness books and a book by a doctor who did thousands of PET scans showing proof how the brain changes. I read alot of stuff! It was a journey of faith, educating myself and disciplining myself to keep trying all while anxious thoughts "lied" to me saying I could never overcome. You can do it too! Have faith.

I'm happy to say I'm still set free from anxiety. I'm a different person now.  I rarely ever have internal shaking at night anymore.  Maybe on a rare occassion when I feel other hormonal fluctuations (breast tender, hot flashes) but it's so light that I don't even wake from it.  I'm very thankful for that.  But if the internal shaking came back I know I'll be okay too. Because I beat the anxiety.

I hope my story encourages you.  Because if I can overcome and get better - you can too.

Thank you so much for your beautiful, informative reply. I so greatly appreciate it. I believe all of that is true. I have had anxiety for most of my life but I had some great years where I felt wonderful and I thought I had overcome it and then, unfortunately, I guess I have allowed life to get the better of me. So that's when symptoms slowly started creeping back, some even worse than I remember from before. The mind is quite an unbelievable thing. And I too believe we have the power to retrain it. We also have to have the determination.  I will surely be looking into these books.  I'm so glad that you're feeling well and you have decided that you won't let this rob you of any more of your precious time.  Thank you so much for taking your time to reply to my question.

Prayers and happy thoughts to you!

Thanks, that's so helpful.  I have also probably always had mild anxiety since I was a teenager but coped quite well with it.  However now I am 49 things have started to change for the worse!  I lost my Mum in January which has really knocked me but I am definitely peri-menopausal and my anxiety seems to have ramped up considerably.  I always used to be able to control my thoughts quite well but now I'm always thinking the worse case scenario or that I'm going mad or that everyone is watching me or knows I have anxiety!  I'm seeing a counsellor this week but don't want to go on any medication.  Your post has really made me realise that I can get back to how I was - I think it's just my brain taking over sometimes and I just want to get back to not thinking so negatively about stuff and not being consumed with every little symptom.

    • Edited

I'm sorry for your loss Sarah.  I understand that pain. But good news; you were able to control your thoughts in the past therefore you can do it again. Be hopeful. Stay positive. Everytime anxiety lies to you with fearful thoughts immediately replace them with positive.  Honestly, the positive is most always more logical and true.  As you discipline your mind to choose positive/grateful thoughts it becomes easier.  There's science to how this works. It's called Neuroplasticity.  YouTube it. Science has proven what I have found to be true in my own life.  That you can "reprogram your mind".  The more you think a thought the more your mind reinforces it, feeds it.  But if you deliberately choose a different thought pattern your brain starts to reinforce that new one and less "attention" is given to the old thoughts.

I'm happy to tell you that I am still set free from anxiety.  I'm a changed person.  I never thought this would've been possible but it's true.

I love this reply!! I absolutely want to learn to do this for myself! Thank you 💓

    • Posted

Kelle, You can!  All it takes is discipline which sounds simple but it's hard work.  I "practiced" anxiety thought patterns for years (since high school) so it took time to make new habits.  But now I don't even have to try to choose positive thoughts.  Since my recovery I even had a big-time stressful event that I came out fine from.  Something that would bring the calmest of people to their knees.  After it happened I was shaken up for 2 days and a bit anxious from the experience; but I would consider that completely reasonable considering what I went through.  Actually I probably handled it better then someone without an anxiety past!  Now, I'm even grateful for terrible event. Because my ability to get over it added one more reason to know with certainty that my anxiety is defeated!

I'd be happy to talk with you more and share the resources I used.

    • Posted

I would love to know the resources you used! I actually don't have an anxiety filled past but I guess I have always immediately gone to the "worst" case scenario in my head about health issues...whether about my own health or my kids. This time my health anxiety actually turned into full blown panic attack and then it actually physically caused symptoms which I didn't even know was possible. So, obviously the brain is powerful! I would love to harness that power in a positive manner! Thank you!! Kelle

Thanks so much - that is so helpful and positive.  My confidence seems really rocked by feeling like this and I'm starting to avoid situations, meeting people etc because I fear for what might happen or how I'll react.  I absolutely hate feeling like this and beat myself up about how I feel daily (which I suppose isn't helping!) as I just want to feel 'normal' again!

I am hoping the counselling will help too - although at the moment I'm even nervous about going to that today!

Thanks for all your help and replies to our posts - I've only just joined this site but have learnt a lot already.

      Hi nieciepoo

?I  can so relate to you as I am the same. Since I started the change over 5 years now, there is no end to the symptoms I experience. I have had internal tremors, butterflies feeling in my stomach. Nauseas and excess wind stomach problems with a scope recently down to ensure all okay - all is fine. two years ago my heart was pounding and ended up in a&e with total embarrassment as nothing wrong. I found out later that this was due to fluctuating hormones. I have headaches a lot of the time which are also related. I have dripping sinus and prone to sinus infections due to change in hormonal levels. There is so much that is unknown with GP's often not knowing what to do or how to help. I am on 2mg of HRT and has only helped a little. I too suffer from anxiety but try not let it get to me .. there are times particularly with my tummy that I think I won't cope with it as I feel ill a lot of the time.

?I know this is all part of the change and I know it will pass. I have good days more than bad days so I know there is an end in sight. Hang on in there as you are not alone in this. Many sites only include common symptoms of the change but there are many more like what we and many more experience. Its a comfort that we have places like this to share how we feel.

All the best in moving forward.

      dhm330,

I still have those symptoms. Sometimes I feel they’re getting worse. I’m having the shaking right now and the nausea. During my menstrual cycle and before it gets worse. I’m having my hormones checked.

    • Edited

Hello, just wanted to tell you my symptoms also started with strange head aches and extreme fatigue along with weird muscle twitching and heart palpitations. Then I started having the internal tremors at night. It turns out I was being carbon monoxide poisoned from a faulty gas heater. All my symptoms were caused by the poisoning. Most went away, but I still wake with internal tremors every night. I suspect my brain was damaged and this is now a lingering symptom of that damage.

I recently started having the same thing I’m under a high high level of stress as my mom is in the last stages of her life I cry like every day and have a lot of anxiety I started waking up with shaking feeling inside for about 30 seconds then it goes away I am not sleeping hardly five hours a night so I’m very fatigued and they say that sometimes has a lot to do with it I am 60 and lost my period when I was 50 so I am 10 years in. I also I’m sweating at night. This forum has been very helpful I believe it is anxiety because I never had any real major issues with anything else before other than anxiety and menopause has been a nightmare for me I have been on and off HRT but thinking maybe I should get back on something again

    • Posted

I agree sweating at night just started getting these internal shaking tremors as I’m waking up from either a nap or my sleep for about 30 seconds and I try to eat something. Menopause has been a nightmare for me all the way around and I anxiety and stress does not help I’m under a huge amount of stress because my mom is in the process of passing away and I cry almost every day and my body feels so fatigued and so drained no wonder my nervous system is shot I think I’m going to start trying to exercise more and doing more yoga and keeping myself busy to see if I can fight this

I agree with you 100% I have major anxiety most of my life and I tried to educate myself and help myself through books tapes etc. It’s a real b***h but your reply was great and hopefully I can get this under control so it doesn’t control my life

Omg Astroaurora! My heater was doing that too!!! I also got much worse after the general anesthetic given to me during my 2 knee surgeries recently! I think that the toxins affect our HPA axis (our hormones & nervous systems) and of course our adrenals and brains too!

I also saw a clairvoyant and she told me that mine is neurological & that blood is not getting to certain parts of my brain. I had a doppler scan done and it has showed that some of this is actually happening.

i hope this message finds you.

I have had all kinds of crazy symptoms.

I am 43 and have 3 kids. I still have periods regularly. though they are much heavier.

I have internal shaking. A lot.

It drives me batty. I have had mri, hormones tested, seen a neurologist, and nothing comes up. I have had all blood work completed. I was slightly anemic. I get cold hands. crawling sensations in legs, muscle twitching, and shakes.

wth! any help would be great.

      Sarah3456,

I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling with these symptoms. I understand how scary it can be because it was the hardest struggle of my life. But experiencing it and working through it ultimately led me to freedom from a life long battle with fear/anxiety. I'm sure I posted about it years ago, please search my name for my story. ( I haven't followed this page in years. I only came back because of your message notification.)

Just know you're going to be okay. I felt like I was the worst case but if I got better so can you! Find hope in my story. It was a journey for me that was difficult, VERY difficult, but now I look back at it as a blessing. Honestly.

(I no longer experience this symptom and am still doing great years later.)

      Be hopeful.

Here is an update for anyone who has read my old posts about my symptoms, dr visits, tests, and of course crippling fear not knowing what was happening to me. I'm still doing great years later! My success was not a temporary fix it was a life-changing journey. I can honestly say I am thankful for going through it because it changed me for the better. I hope you all find hope in my story. If I overcame it - you can too.

hi carol. When this first started two months ago, I was waking up with an usual feeling in my upper torso, like a heavy heart beat but i used to test my heart beat through my wrist and it wasnt fast. i still that when i wake along with twitching, vibration in my lower pelvic/tummy which doesnt go. it last 10 seconds or so then all goes quiet again. if i sit, i feel things near my coccyics area. I feel it in my legs, allover. i had a scan which showed kidney stones and a liver lesion which is supposed to be normal. im so freaked out. Im 55. can you tell me more about whats happening to you?

    • Edited

mine just started in October and it kept me up and created such anxiety which made it worse. it seemed to come when my period arrived and started to get better when my period started to slow down. it was completely gone until that time of the month again. i have noticed a change in my periods. im not as regular as i once was and they are heavier and more cramping. it has been a bit of relief to make the connection to peri-menopause but knowing this could last for a while is disheartening. i have given up caffeine and gluten and am hoping to start healing the gut will make a difference in hormone fluctuations. we shall see
