Perimenopause or Anxiety or ???

Hi everyone,

I recently joined this, my first ever forum, in the hope of gaining knowledge and sharing experiences on the strange symptoms I have been experiencing the last few weeks.

My first post focused on Anxiety and the possibility of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It has recently been brought to my attention, there is a possibility my symptoms could be hormone related. Something I never actually considered.

Brief list of symptoms...

Fatigue (groggy and heavy type tiredness)

Brain Fog

Feeling detached and 'spaced out'

Weak and Shaky

Jelly Legs

Weak Fingers and Toes

Sensitive to light and sound

Sometimes feels like I have flu or a bad virus (even though I know I don't)

Light Headed

Light Dizziness

Easily tired out

Occasional Palpitations

Frequent urination (occasionally)

Anxious (more so than usual)

Brief History...

I have had anxiety issues, on and off, for many years and also hormone induced migraines. This year the migraines are definitely worse and so too is the anxiety. I had an 8 day brutal migraine early/mid September, followed by 8 days of severe brain fog/dull fuzzy head. I haven't been the same since. I'm also wondering if my symptoms are migraine related? I've had 2 full blood tests done and 2 urine samples taken. All came back normal/clear and healthy. I've also been to see an ENT consultant who ruled out an inner ear virus. He also checked my throat and balance. I had a full eye examination last week and my eyes are in great shape. I have an MRI booked next week and also an appointment to get an ECG recorder fitted for 48 hours.

My symptoms are so broad and general, it could be a number of things... I have even considered CFS. Now I'm thinking it could be hormone related? I feel more anxious not knowing what this is!

Is anybody experiencing anything similar?

Any replies/advice would be greatly appreciated x

Hi Mooma, i'm sorry to say i'm so revealed to read your post as i thought i could of wrote it myself. but oh my god have you really had this for 8 yrs cos it only started for me Jan 2012 and i've had every test known to man with no result why i get dizzy and feel faint, waiting for these tests and seeing myself deteriorate by the day i feel brought on the anxiety and taken my confidence completely. I don't go very far on my own any more so have lost my independence which is horrible cos i never relied on my husband before but now i do and he's so good with me but i just want me back. I too take magnesium but doesn't seem to have made any difference to the dizziness but iv read its good for women going through the menopause and im not a good eater so thought i needed something. I have low blood pressure and a low sugar level so i blame them sometimes but others i just dont know. Do you ever feel you are walking on marshmallows when your out cos i get this and it makes me feel off balance and also iv i stand for a while. I can also relate to your head pain its horrendous isn't it, i can have bad headaches for 4 days long which just completely zaps me of energy. I also get very cold do you ever feel this? i cant help you with anything to do with diet cos i really don't know but just wanted to answer your post to tell you your not on your own and if you read through some others they also have the same. i do hope tomorrow will be better for yoy. take care sending you a giant comforting hug x

    Hi Mooma

I can relate to you totally, I am in 8th year of peri, I am ages 49, last period was Aug 2013, I too get bad heads for 3 or 4 days constant, but find mine are before I have a period. ( last bad headache was Aug) I still get the symptoms every month but no period, I too have had, back pain, blurred vision, dizzyness, tearfulness, forgetfulness, lack of energy, lack of confidence, feelings of dread, aches all over my body, feeling of thrush but not thrush, constipation, then the opposite, ovary pain, heavy dull tummy pain, lack of enthusiasm, fear of people near me, had fainting spells when first going through peri, ( fainted three times in two years) no longer have these fainting bouts, for first 6 years I had sudden urge or feeling of sensitive full bladder, bloods show low proteins, two years ago i had a blood test saying border line type two diabetes, yet this has now resolved, I am not overweight, I crave chocolate, cheese, I dont take HRT, i take herbal remedies Estroven, Maca, Vit D/Calcium, Magnesium, Iodine of kelp, a few weeks ago I was rock bottom, and a week ago I began iron supplements, I take half an iron tab, 52.5mg and I have never felt better ... energy levels are up, dont know if this will last or not, but its certainly helped me.

even my constant daily back pain has eased to almost none... mine was all peri menopause symptoms, I was in a dark place and lonely place with it all four weeks ago, the worst i have ever been emotionally, but this has past and i feel the iron tabs are helping me, something I had not considered until I read how they can help some with their energy levels... take care and hope you feel better soon... Hello all you wonderful Ladies.... I am so glad I have found this forum. I have been in menopause since the age of 49, I am now 55. I had a hysterectomy at 39 and things just went down hill from there really. Like most of you I have experienced the most deblilitating menospause symptoms, dizziness, nausea, headaches, flushes, feeling hot all the time, my face feels like its on fire most days, yet the rest of me is cold, but most of all the crippling anxiety is the worst of it, so bad that my GP has 'diagnosed' me with Panic Disorder....wwwhhhhhaaattttt.....I'm in freaking menopause, why do you have to slap a label on me.I am taking Premarin but only the baby dose, it's really not making any difference at all so will be coming off it over the next few months. My GP also prescribed me Prozac which I took for 18 months, it was absolutely dreadful, I actually felt worse so I came of that 6 months ago. The anxiety has stayed so I have now started Sertraline as my GP thinks that most of the symptoms are from anxiety and not from menopause - and I can see his point, there are very similar symptoms for both. I am one week in on the Sertraline and am feeling slightly better but it's early days.

I also meditate and do Body Balance classes which really helps as well as taking Soya Iso Flavones daily, these have helped enormously. I know there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel so just trying to take each day as it comes really.......it's fantastic that I've found this wonderfully supportive blog, even if it's just to moan to others who understand what I'm experiencing. My husband and family have been wonderful, but even I'm getting bored with myself now.......

Sending lots of hugs, courage and happiness your way ladies.......mwah x

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. It is such a relief to hear other people going through similar things but sad too that we have to suffer. Anxious face, yes I do feel like that when walking sometimes. My GP thinks I may have BPPV which might be worth looking at with your GP. The odd dizzy spells and headaches have been going on for about 8 yrs gradually worsening until August 2011 when the vertigo and head/ neck pain started . I'm hoping thiis the peak and things will get better from now on. I do get cold yes which is odd because in the past I've always been a warm person throwing covers off etc in bed, but now I'm adding extra layers! Jayne, can you tell me more about the Maca, I've read about it and wondered whether to give it a try? Keep strong ladies, we'll help each other through. Xx

Hi Mooma.. Maca, there is lots of info on the net, ( its peruvian ginseng) suppose to aid menopause, boost libido, good for guys too, I take 1 x 600mg daily in morning, I have taken it for 8 years now, but take in the morning if you can, anything that is suppose to promote energy etc, should be taken early morning or may keep you awake, so they say take it for when you need it most ( for during the day) ..

I also take Estroven ( natural) as I do not take HRT.. ( I have done with out HRT for 8 years and do not intend to ever take it as family history I am high risk and cant) My Estroven Maximum I have taken for about 2 years, one a day, then I stopped as ran out and moved from one country to another and ran out, wow two months later I was lowest of the low, anxious, feelings of dread, cold hands ( backs of the hands) toes, lifeless totally, palpitations about 3 episodes a day, but I have restarted Estroven Max and also started taking half an iron tablet and I have never felt better, which it all amazing to me ( I am even packing up the house as moving again this weekend, I have no help doing it all single handed) and dont feel stressed or bothered or tired its amazing .. iron tablet seems to have given me something amazing a boost in energy ( I took iron as we all do when pregnant many years ago) and always said I had more energy when I was pregnant than i have ever had in my whole life, ( maybe iron is what i needed) its said to help so much with tiredness etc... I halve a 105mg tablet so take 52.5mg of iron, as do not want to take too much, and wow I am amazed... I was not given my tablets via the doctor, I give up with the doctor, its all trial and error with me.... my doctor is not helpful, just wants to fill me with HRT and anti depressants, I dont want either of those for me... but at the moment I have never felt so good... hang in there ladies ... things do pick up, even if not long lasting they pick up, I am hoping this lasts for me, I am in year 8 of Peri and last period was Aug 13, I had only two last year, 3 the previous year... Big thanks to all of you for sharing your experiences, its so comforting .. Jay x

Thanks Jaynee. Had been thinking of iron as I always feel so awful after a period and a friend suggested iron deficiency. I was reluctant to take it without checking my iron levels though. Could give it a tr and see what happens. I only take a small amount as part of a multivitamin at the moment. I too have been trying lots of stuff to see what works. The magnesium has helped I think. I'll have a look at estroven. Take care. Xx

    hi mooma

its worth a try, i just copied this a small piece of info, about lack of iron..

People who are iron deficient (anemic) are often pale, irritable, and tire easily. Other symptoms can include increased blood pressure, dizziness, foggy thinking, muscle weakness, heart palpitations, impaired immune function, restless legs, itchy skin, hair loss and ringing in the ears.

Some types of iron deficiency may have to do with a reduced capacity to convert stored ferric iron (ferritin) to the ferrous form, which may indicate a need for vitamin B12 and B6, folic acid, copper and molybdenum.

my blood tests did not say i was iron deficient, only low protein, and high platelets, nothing serious... but i tried iron anyway.... wow I am amazed ...

these symptoms above mentioned alot on this blog.. so you never know if it may help...

I too take magnesium...have for a while now... it never seems to make any difference for me magnesium.

good luck Mooma .. Jay x

Hi, Jayneejay I am having irregular periods I been going threw this for three years now.

Hi sharday... pity your doctor was not more understanding, maybe you need a FSH blood test, to see how that is, or try a home menopause kit ... ( from ebay, amazon or boots) sometimes though if your periods are due or near, the hormone results can be abit sketchy as hormones are up and down, but its well worth a look..

have you very early perimenopause in the family, your mum, aunts etc.. Jay x
